We caught a great first trailer and poster last week for the upcoming surfing movie, Chasing Mavericks, starring Gerard Butler and newcomer Jonny Weston, telling the true story of surfing legend Jay Moriarty.
And now a second version of the trailer has already made its way online, debuting over at IMDb, and it continues to look promising. It’s not at all often we get to see a surfing movie on the big screen, so I’m always on board (no pun intended) when they come.

It’s not often we get to see a surfing movie on the big screen, so when the opportunity does arrive, I’m all for it. Especially when that surfing movie has Gerard Butler as one of the leads.
Chasing Mavericks sees Butler star opposite newcomer Jonny Weston, telling the true story of Jay Moriarty (Weston) and his path to becoming the legendary surfer he was until his early death in 2001 at the age of just 22, with Butler playing his mentor.
The first trailer and poster have now made their way online, giving a great first tease of the impressive footage we can look forward to. It feels a little like a live-action version of Surf’s Up in places, but I love Surf’s Up, so that’s a good thing in my books.

[1] Joel Schumacher has confirmed in an interview that Halle Berry is in talks to take the lead in the tentatively titled The Hive, about "a female emergency line operator who, in trying to help a young girl, comes up against a killer from her own past." While nothing is official at this point, the director said, he and Berry are both interested in working together and the producers of The Hive seem to be on board with hiring her. The thriller is expected to begin shooting in February, though Schumacher has said that he may shoot another, smaller film before that. Berry will next appear in Garry Marshall's limp-looking ensemble romcom New Year's Eve, and is currently shooting Cloud Atlas with directors Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, and Lana Wachowski. [Coming Soon [2]] After the jump, surfing biopic Mavericks gets a new title and two new stars, and 50 Cent lines up yet another acting gig.

[1] Michael K. Williams may have missed out on the lead role of Django Unchained, but it seems there may still be room for him to appear in a different capacity. In an interview with Shadow & Act [2] (via The Playlist [3]), the The Wire actor confirmed that he had just barely lost the lead role to Jamie Foxx, but that director Quentin Tarantino (or "Qt, as I call him") liked Williams enough to consider creating a new role just for him. "It's not official yet but there's a lot of talk that there may be a role coming back 'round my way,'" he told the site. "His people and my people have been in discussions in regards to a role that he is creating for me." The Playlist points out that the only major black role still uncast is that of Bartholemew, but that the hulking, silent bodyguard probably wouldn't be an ideal fit for Williams.

Despite being almost insurmountably stupid, Prison Break at least left me with a good impression when it comes to Robert Knepper, an actor that can play characters with great skill and complexity. R.I.P.D. may have just helped itself out, with THR learning that he’s joined the cast as “one of the spirits,” or a “deado.”

Leven Rambin is set to take on the female lead in Mavericks. Variety reports that Rambin will star opposite Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston in the upcoming biopic.
Butler plays "Rick "Frosty" Hesson, the mentor who trained the late surf phenomenon Jay Moriarty (Weston), in the Walden Media drama. The film will be directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) based on a script from Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper.
Rambin has starred in a number of small screen roles, including All My Children, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Grey's Anatomy. She will be making the jump to the big screen to star in Gary Ross' adaptation of The Hunger Games in the role of Glimmer.
I am not familiar with her, but everyone soon will be after Hunger Games. This sounds like a high profile role for Rambin. What are your thoughts?

In February, we reported that Gerard Butler was cast as the lead in the Curtis Hanson-directed surf movie Mavericks, the film about "Jay Moriarty, the teenage big wave rider who successfully rode Mavericks. That is a body of water in Northern California that became popular with daredevil surfers who braved the structure and rocks to ride waves the size of five-story buildings." Deadline reports that Twenty-two year-old Jonny Weston has been offered the coveted role and is currently in talks for the Walden Media film.
The script was penned by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper, and Hooper is producing with Jim Meenaghan. Butler plays "Rick "Frosty" Hesson, the mentor who trained Moriarty to ride the Mavericks when the surfer was just 16. Though Moriarity survived those impossible waves, he died at 22 in a diving accident. But he remains an inspiration to surfers, who coined the phrase "Live like Jay."

Gerard Butler has gone from being a singing Phantom of the Opera to kicking some major butt in films like 300 and RocknRolla to playing up some romantic comedies such as last year’s The Bounty Hunter. Up next per The Wrap, Butler takes on a real life figure in surfer biopic Mavericks. Almost a year ago we heard that Curtis Hanson (The River Wild, L.A. Confidential) would make a film [1] about the late surfer Jay Moriarty, who rode massive Northern California wave breaks called 'mavericks,' but died at 22 in a diving accident. When we first reported on the film Sean Penn was rumored; the role he was very vaguely linked to is Rick 'Frosty' Hesson, the young surfer's friend and mentor. Now Gerard Butler will play that role instead. Deadline [2] has the details, saying that the Walden Media film will be based on a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper. (Gerard Butler, by the way, is now an exec producer, too.) The search is on for an actor to play Jay Moriarty. We don't know to what degree that actor will be required to show some surfing skills on screen. I imagine it would be a lot harder to...

Looks like we've got a new surf film going into production. The movie is called Mavericks and Gerard Butler (300) is set to star in it. This is exciteing for me because I love surfing. The movie is based on a true story in which Butler will play Rick "Frosty" Hesson the man who trained Jay Moriarty to surf the incredibly huge waves at the treacherous Northern California surf break known as Mavericks. Moriarty is a freakin' big wave legend amoung surfers. Unfortuntely he died in 2001 from a free-diving accident a day before he turned 23 years old. I think it's awesome that a movie is being made that celebrates his life.
The movie is set to be directed Curtis Hanson is set to direct from a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper. Hanson is currently on the hunt for a young actor to play Moriarity. The film is scheduled to start shooting in October.
