In the past, fans have seen many video game franchises getting adapted into a TV show or movie. These expansions are often ways to capitalize through these franchises and that’s exactly what rapper Eminem tried to do with the Grand Theft Auto video game series. During his prime years, the rapper was reportedly keen on making a movie based on the franchise with director Tony Scott after the release of Grand Theft Auto III.
A still from GTA 3
Kirk Ewing, a popular name in the gaming industry, explained in a podcast how Eminem was ready to invest in this idea in the mid-2000s. However, the co-creator of the GTA series, Sam Houser, rejected the idea. After all these years, there hasn’t been much information about a GTA movie but Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, explained in 2019 that they could create a movie based on the...

Released on 21st November 1998, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time had a seismic effect on the games industry that is felt to this day.
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was launched on the Nintendo 64 25 years ago, on 21st November 1998. That’s a long, long time ago, and yet this remarkable game still has an outsize influence on titles being made today.
Context-sensitive buttons and lock-on targeting were both introduced with Ocarina Of Time, and both remain very much a part of the game-maker’s playbook. Going back to this seminal Zelda title now, its open-world gameplay feels familiar, a pattern seen in everything from Assassin’s Creed to Ghost Of Tsushima. Here’s a giant field, here’s a horse, now go have fun.
But if you imagine what the world was like 25 years before Ocarina Of Time was released, it’s remarkable to think what a leap it was,...

Seven years after its launch, Grand Theft Auto, via the game’s new Cayo Perico Heist update, has received its most substantial musical bump to date — reflecting the growing foothold that video games have on a music industry intent on finding digital revenue opportunities.
The entire list of musical add-ons in this update is extensive. In the game’s most interactive music feature, three well-known DJs — Moodymann, Palms Trax and DJ collective Keinemusik — are now residents at The Music Locker, GTA Online’s virtual nightclub where players can hang out.

Rockstar Games is a developer that typically dances to its own tune. You won’t see its name up in lights at E3, for instance, nor will you find many examples of studio announcements leaking ahead of time. Such a method of approach naturally keeps fans locked to the edge of their seats, and social media was sent into uproar earlier this week following the release of two fleeting teasers.
Confirming what many had already assumed to be a sure-thing, the latest update from the Rockstar Games Twitter account reveals that Red Dead Redemption 2 is indeed on the way. It’s been announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (no mention of PC at this stage) and will arrive in the fall of 2017 with a “new multiplayer experience.” Curious to see the Western sequel in motion? Don’t fret; we also have word that the first teaser trailer will debut on Thursday,...

BBC’s The Gamechangers didn’t exactly do its GTA subject matter justice. Ryan explains why we need a great movie about game design...
There’s a moment in the BBC’s drama The Gamechangers where Sam Houser, the co-founder of Grand Theft Auto studio Rockstar North, says to one of his minions, “We need to make our own game engine.”
In the very next scene, the game engine’s finished and demonstrated to Jamie, another Rockstar co-founder. To the casual observer, it might seem as though the process of making a game engine is as simple as ordering a pizza.
It’s an example of the 90-minute show’s clumsy handling of its subject matter: the videogame phenomenon Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, its social impact and its controversy. This was the kind of drama that felt the need to carefully explain some things in painfully literal terms -...

Rockstar Games isn't a fan of BBC's The Gamechangers - the Grand Theft Auto drama that starred Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxman - calling it "random, made-up bollocks" in the wake of its airing last night (September 16) - and some critics weren't much kinder.
Reception has been mixed. Mainstream outlets like The Telegraph gave it four stars and praised Radcliffe's "excellent" performance, while Digital Spy said it was a "tense, nostalgic drama" - but on the other hand, specialist gaming press Kotaku branded it a "Titanic disappointment", while Eurogamer called it "weird and meaningless".

"Was Basil Brush busy?" Developer Rockstar offers its response to the BBC's Grand Theft Auto film, The Gamechangers...
Nb: The following contains a bit of saucy language.
It's fair to say that Rockstar was never particularly thrilled at the BBC's decision to make The Gamechangers, a feature-length drama about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and its surrounding controversy. The game giant sued the BBC earlier this year for "trademark infringement", adding that it had an "obligation to protect our intellectual property."
Well, the drama finally appeared on British television last night, and it's fair to say that the resulting response has been far more interesting than the show itself - even if it does count Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton among its stars. Marred by stiff dialogue and some truly bizarre scenes - Paxton chatting to God on a golf course, a bearded Radcliffe staring affectionately at a poster of...

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton star in The Gamechangers, a drama about the making of the Grand Theft Auto series. Any good? Not exactly...
Nb: The following contains spoilers.
How do you make an interesting film about coding a videogame? It sounds like a difficult subject to dramatise on the face of it. But ultimately, all great stories are more about the relationships between characters than what they do for a living. A movie that contained nothing but boxing matches for 100 continuous minutes would leave audiences reeling. The Rocky movies were approximately 90 percent drama to 10 percent boxing, and audiences, for the most part, flocked to see them.
BBC's The Gamechangers takes the Rocky approach to Grand Theft Auto - specifically, the making of 2004's hit sequel San Andreas, the controversy surrounding a hidden sex scene on the disc, and the legal tussle that followed. In its dramatisation of real events,...

It's fair to say that Rockstar Games - the developer behind Grand Theft Auto - isn't happy with the BBC for making The Gamechangers.

Video gaming isn't the subject of many films (and we're not talking Pixels), but considering that Grand Theft Auto V became one of the world's best-selling entertainment products ever in 2013, it was only a matter of time.
Daniel Radcliffe sports a beard that his old mate Hagrid would be proud of as Rockstar producer Sam Houser in this one-off BBC film, which follows the company's difficult encounters while developing San Andreas back in 2002.
The film makes it very clear that it is in no way authorised by Rockstar, and so one can expect a certain degree of poetic licence in this tale of a bunch of white Brits making a game steeped in black American culture.
Director Owen Harris and writer James Wood must have been influenced by The Social Network in some way or another. David Fincher's 2010 film focused on another tech genius as he created something the whole world would eventually want.

Back in April, it was announced that Daniel Radcliffe was in talks to star in "Gamechangers," a true-life story about a fight between the creator of the "Grand Theft Auto" video game and a Miami lawyer who wanted to ban video game violence. And now, we have the first trailer for the film. Check it out below. Radcliffe plays Sam Houser, the British co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, the company behind "Grand Theft Auto" as well as games such as "Max Payne" and "Red Dead." He is credited in making "Grand Theft Auto" into one of the video game world's biggest franchises. In the first decade of the 21st century, Houser and Rockstar Games came under repeated attacks from activist attorney Jack Thompson. Thompson was an unorthodox Florida attorney who was already attacking media companies for pushing rap and sex onto the airwaves when he turned his attention to...

Watch: Daniel Radcliffe in 'The Gamechangers' — The Movie 'Grand Theft Auto' Doesn't Want You to See
"Grand Theft Auto" changed the gaming world forever. With its open world concept and overt violence, the historic franchise is more than deserving of a feature film, and BBC Two is ready to bring it to you. Well, to U.K. audiences, at least. No U.S. release has been set for the above TV movie, in part because the biopic is completely unauthorized. Rockstar Games, the company responsible for "Grand Theft Auto," sued the BBC to try to stop production of "The Gamechangers" due to copyright infringement. Though unsuccessful, the film could face similar roadblocks if it tries to make its way across the pond, given the sensitive subject matter within. Love it or loathe it, Grand Theft Auto is a bona fide sales juggernaut in the video game industry, standing as one of the best-selling franchise of all time. Its meteoric rise to prominence has not been without controversy, though, and that’s an area BBC Two is aiming to explore with its upcoming docu-drama, The Gamechangers.
Putting the overly bland title to one side for the time being, Daniel Radcliffe toplines the cast as one of the creative team that brought GTA into existence: Sam Houser. Daniel Radcliffe stars as the creator of “Grand Theft Auto” in a new trailer for BBC Films’ “The Gamechangers.” The movie chronicles the true story of the legal fight of Sam Houser (Radcliffe), the British developer who helped create the violent and controversial video game “Grand Theft Auto,” against American attorney Jack Thompson (Bill Paxton), who opposed the game‘s glorification of violence. “These recent revelations demonstrate what little regard these Brits have for the welfare of our children,” Paxton says in the video. Rockstar Games, who have never been strangers to button pushing controversy when it comes to their "Grand Theft Auto" series of games, suddenly don't feel so comfortable when the spotlight is shined off their games and onto their personnel. Earlier this year, they decided the sue the BBC over the upcoming "The Gamechangers" starring Daniel Radcliffe, which finds the actor playing Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser. Well, it's now clear that lawyers can't stop the film as the first teaser trailer has arrived. Co-starring Bill Paxton, and directed by Owen Harris ("Kill Your Friends"), the film details the battle between Houser and Christian lawyer Jack Thompson, who starts a crusade against the games where carjacking, murder and more are de rigeur. Here's the official synopsis: In Autumn 2013, the game’s latest iteration – GTA: V – earned $1bn in just three days, becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. But this drama goes.

Game Changer, the 90-minute Grand Theft Auto docu-drama in the works at BBC, is set to chart the heated court battle between anti-game lawyer Jack Thompson (Bill Paxton) and Sam Houser – brother to Dan Houser – one of the masterminds behind Rockstar’s genre-defining blockbuster.
Primarily centering around the two leads, Polygon has unearthed the first stills from the set in Cape Town, which showcase Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe sporting a beard as the former brother. For the documentary, the 25-year-old actor will take a stand against Bill Paxton’s peeved lawyer, who believes the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise should be disbanded due to its excessive – and, arguably, gratuitous – violence.
But it is a real-life murder that will act as the crux of Game Changer. In 2005, Devin Moore was shot and killed by three police officers, and soon thereafter Thompson attributed part of the blame...

This week, Variety reported on a study that was released confirming what many already know about the film industry, or at the very least anecdotally: Women are having an increasingly hard time breaking in.
The study showed that there’s a large gender gap between independently financed and directed projects by women when compared to projects within the studio system. The Sundance Institute and Women in Film looked at movies in competition at Sundance between 2002 and 2014 compared to the top 1300 grossing films between the same time period. Men appeared at Sundance at a ratio of 3 to 1 more often than women, but an even more staggering 23 to 1 when looking at studio films.
Further, half of the industry executives surveyed believed that films directed by women did not appeal as broadly as films directed by men. A quarter of those surveyed added that they shared a “perceived lack of ambition” in women directors,...

Daniel Radcliffe’s place among the Grand Theft Auto drama – set to be entitled Game Changer – has been confirmed, BBC Films announced today. As we reported last week, the Horns star will join the project as Sam Houser, one half of prestigious developer Rockstar Games and the man who become embroiled in a legal battle with Jack Thompson over the issue of video game violence.
BBC Films has tapped Bill Paxton to portray the lawyer in the forthcoming feature, which will largely be based on David Kushner’s novel, Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto.

Game on, Harry Potter. Daniel Radcliffe has signed on to play Sam Houser, one of the British video game developers behind the hit "Grand Theft Auto" series, in a new BBC TV movie.
According to Variety, the 90-minute drama currently has the working title "Game Changer." (Too close to the political book/TV movie "Game Change"?) Bill Paxton will star opposite DanRad as lawyer Jack Thompson, who is determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of "Grand Theft Auto."
So the TV movie will follow both the mega-successful game developers and the moral campaigners who oppose the gameplay, which glamorizes violence and the criminal underworld. It should be pretty fascinating. The script was written by James Wood ("Rev, "Ambassadors"), and directed by Owen Harris ("Misfits"). No word yet on when this might air, but we'll keep an eye on it.

It looks like Bill Paxton is going to star along side Daniel Radcliffe in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto inspired BBC drama. The movie will tell the true story behind the creation of the hit video game and the fight between the creator and a Miami lawyer who wanted to ban video game violence.
Radcliffe will play Sam Houser, co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, which, as many of you already know, is the company behind GTA. Houser is had a huge hand in popularizing GTA and also pushed to amp up the violence quotient.
Paxton will play his rival, Jack Thompson, an activist attorney, who came after the game and attacked Houser and Rockstar Games. He became well known for “blasting media companies for pushing rap and sex onto the airwaves before turning his attention toward video games.” He was eventually disbarred in 2008 for using unorthodox methods and inappropriate...

The Grand Theft Auto video game franchise has been targeted by BBC Films for adaptation. If that alliance strikes you as odd, then that’s because the proposed movie won’t be a direct lift from the games’ bloody vehicular antics. The film is instead set to take its cues from a real-life legal battle revolving around the moral issue of video game violence.
One man who took umbrage with Rockstar Games – the folks behind GTA – was Miami lawyer Jack Thompson, who THR reports will be played in the film by Bill Paxton. The Miami activist took offense to the games produced by Rockstar and in particular to its founders Ben and Sam Houser. The siblings stumbled upon immense success in the industry through their hyper-stylized series of games, including Max Payne and Red Dead. Shortly thereafter, their GTA franchise came under fire from Thompson who decried the titles for their glamorization of violence.

A writer who worked on the first Grand Theft Auto has admitted that he is sceptical about the BBC Two's upcoming drama about the making of the game.
Former Dma Design employee Steve Hammond expressed concerns that nobody from the BBC has approached members of the original development team about the project.
"I find it quite telling that no-one from Dma I've spoken to so far seems to know anything about it," Hammond told GamesRadar.
"With Rockstar's famous reticence to talk to anyone, that makes the only behind-the-scenes source David Kushner's book Jacked, which frankly has me a bit worried."
The BBC programme is said to be based on Kushner's 2012 book Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto, which charts the rise of the series and the controversy it attracted.
Hammond also fears that the development of the early Grand Theft Auto games will not be given the coverage it deserves.

Former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is circling an upcoming biopic that centers on the creator of the notoriously violent, moral-majority-maligned video game series Grand Theft Auto. While this concept may seem surreal and evoke mental images of a teenage wizard running over a muggle hooker with a convertible after patronizing her services, it.s not quite that. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Radcliffe is in negotiations to star in a film deceptively titled Grand Theft Auto, about British video game guru, Sam Houser. Having co-founded the New York-based Rockstar Games, Houser became an integral creative force behind the sandbox-centric Grand Theft Auto series, along with loads of other huge hits that carry a similarly irreverent, uber-violent, unapologetically un-pc pathos, like the western-based carnage of the Red Dead series, the movie-inspiring Max Payne games, and Manhunt. Yet, despite the violently voyeuristic nature of the games in question, this film could...

However, the British actor will soon play Sam Houser, a man who popularized himself by letting others engage in lewd acts and once-shocking behavior galore... in the video game world that is. Houser is the co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, and the film is named after the company's most popular title, Grand Theft Auto. The BBC biopic doesn't center on Houser's life specifically, but more on his real-life legal battle with Jack Thompson, a Miami attorney and activist who attempted to ban violence in video games. With Hollywood looking for franchises wherever it can find them, it seems mighty odd that The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, a highly successful novel with a film adaptation that had Rooney Mara, David Fincher, and James Friggin’ Bond attached, is not already swimming in sequels. The American version of Stieg Larsson’s novel wasn’t exactly a blockbuster, but it made $233 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. It seems like a no-brainer.
Now there’s talk from THR that a sequel could arrive soon enough, but Sony is debating the possibility of turning Larsson’s last two books, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, into a single film. They may even lump in a new novel starring hacker Lisbeth Salander by David Lagercrantz called The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Larsson passed away in 2004, before the books were even...

One of the very few video game properties that transcends the bounds of the medium into the mainstream is Grand Theft Auto – for all the wrong reasons, some would say – and its continued popularity can’t be overstated.
