The Whitney Houston estate has called out Jerrod Carmichael’s “poor taste” joke about the singer at the Golden Globes.
During the ceremony, which took place on Tuesday (10 January), the comedian made several surprising quips, including one about the event’s formerly disgraced voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and another about Scientology and Tom Cruise.
However, Carmichael drew criticism for a comment he made about Houston’s death.
After returning from a break, he said: “So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton.”
Houston’s familly, via her sister-in-law and former manager, Pat Houston, told TMZ: “The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the joke and felt it was in poor taste.”
The Independent has contacted Carmichael’s representative for comment.

Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael, who didn’t shy away from calling out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Tuesday night’s ceremony or taking shots at Scientology, is getting flak for his mention of the late Whitney Houston.
After coming back from a commercial break, Carmichael stated he’d been asked to give a “shoutout” to the venue hosting the event and did so with this eyebrow-raising name drop: “So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton.” Whitney was found dead in her room at the hotel in 2012.

For “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” executive producer Clive Davis, it was paramount to get Whitney Houston’s story right.
The iconic record producer — who has lived long enough to discover Houston in a Newark club, produce the most awarded female singer of all time and oversee Houston’s biopic a decade after her tragic death — wanted to showcase Houston as an artist, first and foremost.
“The two attempts at biography that were previously done — there was a TV broadcast and there was a documentary — never touched the surface of who Whitney was,” Davis told Variety at the film’s premiere on Tuesday in New York City. “The documentary didn’t even include any music. I was shocked.”
Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten and starring Naomi Ackie, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” has a clear mission of authenticity.

The Oscar race for Best Actress is heating up with Cate Blanchett (“Tar”) out front followed by Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Michelle Williams (“The Fablemans”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Margot Robbie (“Babylon”). Noticeably struggling is Naomi Ackie, who plays music icon Whitney Houston in the upcoming biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” directed by Kasi Lemmons. Over the past few months Ackie has fallen from the top five and now sits in eighth place, but don’t count the BAFTA winner out just yet.
Unlike her competition, Ackie’s film hasn’t been widely seen by critics or audiences. It didn’t screen at any of this year’s major film festivals and the movie won’t premiere in theaters until December 21. Naomi Ackie’s greatest challenge of all? Transforming into the “Greatest Love of All” singer Whitney Houston.
BAFTA award winner Ackie stars as the late icon for musical biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” in theaters December 21. The film, written by Oscar-nominated “Bohemian Rhapsody” screenwriter Anthony McCarten and directed by Kasi Lemmons, charts Houston’s life and legacy, starting with her groundbreaking record deal with Clive Davis, played by Stanley Tucci.
“My dream: Sing what I want to sing, be who I want to be,” Ackie as Houston says in the trailer. While Houston is criticized for not being “Black enough” and her tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders) makes headlines, the biopic focuses on her early days as a New Jersey choir girl who became the bestselling and most awarded recording artist of all time. The “no-holds-barred portrait” gives a never-before-seen look at Houston’s “complicated and multi-faceted” career.

Bobbi Kristina Brown's family continues to try to get her affairs in order. Earlier Friday, a DeKalb County judge appointed the 22-year-old's father, Bobby Brown, and aunt Patricia Houston co-guardians of her estate, the majority of which comprises the assets left to her by mom Whitney Houston. Houston died in 2012, leaving her reported $20 million estate to her only daughter. If Bobbi Kristina were to die, the singer's will dictated that the estate be passed to Whitney's mom Cissy Houston, brother Gary Houston and his wife, Pat. Brown had previously filed for guardianship on his own, but the joint arrangement was the result after today's hearing. The judge also appointed Bedelia...

Whitney Houston's family debuted their new reality show on Lifetime on Oct. 24. Plus, Bobbi Kristina showcased the beginning of a potential downward spiral, three months after her mother's tragic passing. On the series premiere of The Houstons: On Our Own, Bobbi Kristina butted heads with her family over underage drinking, starting her career, and defending her engagement to her stepbrother Nick Gordon. While some have raised eyebrows at the idea of the Houston family filming a reality show only three months after Whitney Houston's passing, the episode begins with a touching moment -- Bobbi visiting Whitney's grave for the very first time.
