On July 12, Issa Rae was in the middle of a meeting, largely unaware that Emmy nominations were being announced. Then she received a text from “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and star Robin Thede, congratulating her on being nominated for lead actress in a comedy.
“I had a little squeal that I let out in the meeting, and then kept it pushing, but I was happy,” Rae says.
And there was plenty to be happy about. In addition to her solo recognition, “Insecure” nabbed two other noms for editor Nena Erb and cinematographer Ava Berkofsky, plus “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which Rae executive produces under her Hoorae multimedia banner alongside Thede, earned five nominations.
Despite two previous lead actress noms, Rae admits she was skeptical about being recognized this cycle, given that “Insecure” aired its fifth and final season in December 2021. But there wasn’t a ton of...

The final season of "Insecure" was among the honorees when the 2022 Emmy Award nominations were announced on July 12. The show, which wrapped up in December 2021, got nominations for outstanding actress in a comedy series for Issa Rae, plus outstanding single-camera picture editing for a comedy series and outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (half-hour). But the news was still disappointing to fans, since the show missed out on a nomination for outstanding drama series, and no one else from the cast received a nod.
Rae reacted to the new on Tuesday afternoon in an Instagram Story. "Emmy-nominated on a Tuesday?! On a Tuesday?" she said with a big smile. "I gotta give love to my 'Insecure' fam, to Prentice [Penny], Yvonne [Orji], Jay [Ellis], to our amazing writers," she continued. She also gave love to Nena Erb and Ava Berkofsky, who received the show's other two nominations. Then she shouted out other nominees,...

Emmy-winning picture editor Nena Erb was up for the challenge of “Genera+ion,” a new HBO Max comedy series about Gen-z high schoolers. While she hadn’t done much work on shows about teenagers in the past, she was excited by the show’s focus on a racially diverse LGBTQ community. “Growing up, I never saw myself reflected on TV or in the movies so when I heard what this show was about and I watched the pilot, I was immediately drawn to it,” says Erb in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. Watch the full video interview above.
SEEJustice Smith interview: ‘Genera+ion’
Erb edited two episodes of “Genera+ion’s” first season, including Episode 2, “Dickscovery.” The episode mostly finds the characters confined in the Gsa room during a lockdown. It was quite a task for Erb to create momentum through the episode while also devoting enough screen time to each of the main characters.

It seems like every year we repeat the same thing: that [insert awards show here] emphasizes white males over everyone else. At the outset of this year’s Emmys, there was some hope. Sure, there were no Latinx or disabled nominees at all, but several of the categories had half or nearly all Black nominees. The problem is once the actual ceremonies began — starting on Sept. 14 with five nights of Creative Artists Emmys and concluding tonight with the Primetime Emmys — those nominees infrequently became winners.
It would take over an hour for the first Black performer at the Primetime Emmys to actually win an award, that being Regina King for “Watchmen,” tying the record alongside Alfre Woodard for most acting Emmys won in a career by a Black performer. From there, just three other Black actors would win during the evening: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, also for “Watchmen”; Uzo Aduba for her role as Shirley Chisholm...

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” may be dead and gone, but they are most certainly not forgotten — at least as far as the American Cinema Editors are concerned. The organization announced the Eddie Award winners for TV on Friday night, at a ceremony held at the International Ballroom in the Beverly Hilton, hosted by star of “The Good Place” D’Arcy Carden.
Tim Porter’s work on the epic 82-minute “Game of Thrones” episode “The Long Night” earned him the prize for Best Edited Drama Series For Non-Commercial Television, unsurprising given Porter’s win for the work at the Emmy Awards in September.
