Monte Hellman, the film director who earned a cult following with movies like Two-Lane Blacktop and Ride in the Whirlwind, died Tuesday at Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs, California, after a fall in his home. His daughter, Melissa Hellman, confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 91.
Hellman was well regarded for his genre films, such as his 1964 war drama Back Door to Hell, 1966’s pair of Westerns The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind (both starring Jack Nicholson), and the acclaimed road movie Two-Lane Blacktop starring James Taylor and Dennis Wilson.

“The Last Movie,” Dennis Hopper’s infamous directorial follow-up to “Easy Rider,” is a counterculture touchstone in its own right, even though it wasn’t given a national release for decades after its short-lived 1971 bow. Even longer in coming: a soundtrack album. This Saturday, nearly five decades after the movie first touched screens, a companion LP is arriving. The vinyl on the label Earth Recordings, distributed by Light in the Attic in the U.S., will be released for Record Store Day on August 29, in a limited edition of 1000. A CD version will be forthcoming.
Variety invited the album’s two producers to weigh in on “The Last Movie” and its music, then and now. Jessica Hundley, who knew Hopper, shares firsthand memories of the filmmaker and how the movie’s shelving affected him. Pat Thomas, one of the music industry’s foremost archival producers, tells what to expect from...

Natalie Portman will be lending her voice and producing skills to the animated film Foxy Trotter.
Variety reports that the film will be directed by Chris Prynoski from a script written by Jess Rotter, Michael Reich, Jessica Hundley and Mike Pinkney.
Foxy Trotter tells the story of a motorcycle-riding, rock and roll photographer name Foxy in the early ’70s on a mission to capture the perfect rock photo. Portman will voice Foxy’s best friend, Ronnie, who is seduced by her nemisis Gunter and offered as a sacrifice in Gunter’s evil plan to destroy the universe.
One of the producers calls Foxy Trotter a "wild mix of ‘Barbarella’ meets ‘Sausage Party’ meets Easy Rider,”
Seems like we're getting more and more adult-centric animated films. It will be interesting to see if this movie is as risque as Sausage Party. What do you think, do we need more animated movies like this?...

"Apart from being supersmart, Joss Whedon has the perfect credentials to write and direct a colossal commercial construct like Marvel's The Avengers," begins David Edelstein in this week's New York. "He plainly loves the opportunity to put these comic-book icons — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) — in one room and let them hang out, spar (with words as well as hammers, shields, etc), and weigh the merits of individualism versus teamwork. Really — debate is as important to him as 'Hulk, smash!' The movie would be all over the place if not for Whedon's centrifugal seriousness. And it would be overbearingly pompous if not for his nifty ability to spoof his subjects without devaluing them. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other Whedon wonders, The Avengers is both campy and reverential."
