Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Norway
At the Abigail premiere, Dan Stevens listed Norway among his four favorite vampire movies. “I just saw a great movie recently that I’d never heard of,” he told Letterboxd. “A Greek film called Norway, about a vampire who basically exists in the underground disco scene in ’80s Athens, and he can’t stop dancing ’cause he’s worried his heart will stop. And it’s lovely. It’s great.”
You won’t find a better endorsement than that, but allow me to elaborate. Imagine Only Lovers Left Alive meets What We Do in the Shadows by way of Yorgos Lanthimos. The...

Apart from the brief total phase, staring bare-eyed at a solar eclipse is a bad idea. That is a known fact. Less factual, however, is the notion that giving birth during an eclipse will have serious repercussions for the baby. Certain superstitious lore suggests imminent harm for anyone whose birthday falls on or near an eclipse. Ed Hunt’s 1981 film, Bloody Birthday, takes the concept further and shows how the celestial event creates unfeeling killers.
As taboo as it is to bump off children in cinema, having them be murderers is maybe more so. Which is why Bloody Birthday and its ilk are so well liked and sought after by horror fans. The genre has visited plenty of verboten topics over the years (some with more mileage than others), but killer kids somehow never lose their novelty or shock value. Now, other films featuring a similar pitch have a tendency to be serious and concerned,...

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.
If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

There are holiday horror movies that wholly commit to the yuletide theme, and then there are holiday horror movies you might not even recall being set over or around Christmas. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the latter category. These horror titles make it clear that they’re set around the holidays without that ever factoring much into the plot… if at all.
That makes them perfect watches when you’ve already exhausted the holiday horror classics and want something a little outside the box. Or way out of the box, in some instances.
As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

Let’s take a minute and give thanks for the Mad Scientist. Like any other cinematic profession, there can be good and evil examples of both; some want to heal the world, others want to crush it. The Brain (1988) gives us a villain squarely in the latter camp, and he’s not even the head baddie (see: title). A modern day love letter to the genre, The Brain is weird enough for a passé crowd yet conventional enough to work as a straight up monster movie.

Now in its fifteenth year, the Alamo Drafthouse-created Fantastic Fest is showing no signs of relinquishing its title as America’s premiere genre film festival. The first wave of its 2019 lineup includes premieres from around the world, restorations of classic horror flicks, and an eclectic assortment of documentaries.
Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” will open the festival, marking the film’s American premiere with an appearance from the filmmaker. Legendary director Takashi Miike will also be in attendance, promoting his Cannes favorite “First Love.” Other highlights include Stephen King adaptation “In the Tall Grass” and the Elijah Wood-led “Come to Daddy.”
“Our fifteenth year is a one-of-a-kind of celebration of the cinema we champion: brilliant and out-there,” said the festival’s Creative Director Evrim Ersoy in an official statement. “It’s a 15-year-long love letter to the wide spectrum of daring, crazy films, filmmakers, and audience members whom...

Fantastic Fest, the touchstone of envelope-pushing genre films, has released its first wave of programming and revealed that Taikai Waititi’s anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit will be opening the 15th edition of the Austin-based film festival which kicks off September 19 and continues through September 26.
Jojo Rabbit, which will make its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest, tells the story of a lonely young boy growing up in World War II Germany. He finds his world-view turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.
In addition, Jim Mickle will return to the fest to present the World Premiere of In the Shadow of the Moon, a mind-bending sci-fi film starring Boyd Holbrook as a Philadelphia police officer who begins tracking a serial killer...

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to what is the final Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2018, as it seems like we have no major genre home media releases coming home next week on Christmas. That being said, the year is ending on a strong note, as we have a number of essential titles hitting various formats this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Collector’s Edition releases of Dracula: Prince of Darkness as well as John Carpenter’s Starman (two of my personal favorites!), and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition of Bloody Birthday for this week as well. As far as recent theatrical titles go, The House With a Clock in Its Walls, The Predator, A Simple Favor, and Venom all arrive on various formats this Tuesday, and if you’re a completist, there’s a 4-film collection of the Predator movies that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has assembled,...

The 1981 Slasher Classic Bloody Birthday will be available on Blu-ray December 18th From Arrow Video
The Bad Seed meets Halloween in this deliciously twisted early 80s slasher offering directed by Ed Hunt (The Brain) and starring the always loveable Lori Lethin.
Debbie, Curtis and Steven may seem cute as buttons. But their angelic facade conceals the wicked, murderous streak given to them having all been born under the same solar eclipse. With the grown-ups around them blissfully unaware of their little darlings homicidal tendencies, the evil brats begin to bump off the adults one-by-one. By gun. By arrow. By cake. Bye-bye!
Mixing the killer-kid subgenre with elements of the then-booming slice-and-dice movie, 1981 s Bloody Birthday shocks and appalls with its scenes of young children shooting, strangling and bludgeoning their way through the local population. They sure don t (and can t!) make em like this anymore.

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.
Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

The Bitter Ash
A rather precious thing happened in Montreal in the mid 1970s. Canadian cinema had been dominated by the National Film Board since its formation in 1940, and the generally-perceived character of Canadian film was all educational documentary, and not a lot of fun. Directors such as Claude Jutra, Don Owen, and Gilles Groulx struck off on their own to make the first Canadian new wave fiction films (A tout prendre [1963], Nobody Waved Goodbye, and Le chat dans le sac [both 1964] respectively), on the back of independents like Sydney J. Furie’s groundbreaking A Dangerous Age (1959) and Larry Kent’s student feature The Bitter Ash (1963), but for all their youthful, semi-bohemian trappings, these were still quite po-faced affairs. Then came the “genial loser” films of the 70s, led by Owen’s Goin’ Down The Road (1970), and others such as The Rowdyman (Peter Carter, 1972) and Paperback Hero (Peter Pearson, 1973), for the...

The trailer for Edward Hunt's (1981's Bloody Birthday) long-awaited return to the horror genre, Halloween Hell, has arrived; and we have every psychotic pixel of it right here for your perusal. Dig it!
From the Press Release
Halloween Hell focuses on a devil doll that is rumored to have been carved out of lava that came straight from Hell. It provides a home for a demon that has also come straight from Hell.
This devil doll is the star of a pay-per-view reality TV show that is hosted by a psycho who believes that he is Count Dracula.
Six young adventurers (three male and three female) are offered $100,000 to spend all of Halloween locked in a room with the devil doll, who has reportedly caused the deaths or suicides of over fifty people during the last two centuries, always on the Halloween nights when there is a full moon.

This week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are an eclectic bunch, to say the least. Not only is Steve Miner’s criminally overlooked horror/comedy creature feature Lake Placid swimming its way onto Blu-ray, but Severin Films is also releasing a trio of controversial cult classics- Bloody Moon, The Baby and Bloody Birthday-all in high definition for the first time ever.
The Time Machine is also getting a Blu-ray release this week, along with Gareth Evans’ stunning action masterpiece The Raid 2 and a handful of indie horror films, including the wickedly entertaining horror musical Stage Fright starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Overall, it’s a good week to be a genre fan with oddball tastes because there’s a whole lot of wonderfully weird stuff arriving this Tuesday.
Spotlight Titles:

A birthday (or random holiday), killer kids and a total eclipse…all of this sounds like the perfect combination for a horror film. Bloody Birthday is a slasher movie that appeared in the eighties, this should be more than a hint what you’ll see. “Bloody Birthday” (1981)
Directed By: Ed Hunt
Written By: Ed Hunt & Barry Pearson
Starring: Lori Lethin (Joyce Russel), Melinda Cordell (Mrs. Brody), Julie Brown (Beverly Brody), Joe Penny (Mr. Harding), Bert Kramer (Sheriff Brody), K.C. Martel (Timmy Russel), Elizabeth Hoy (Debbie Brody), Billy Jayne (Curtis Taylor), Andrew Freeman (Steven Seton), Susan Strasberg (Viola Davis), Jose Ferrer (Doctor), Ben Marley (Duke), Erica Hope (Annie), Ellen Geer (Madge)
“Bloody Birthday” certainly offers a fun early 80s movie for slasher enthusiasts. The twist this time around is there is no Jason Voorhees or Michael Michaels but 10 year old kids! It was certainly up my ally as I like slasher movies that try something different aside from the typical formula used in these movies.
The plot is three-ten-year old kids begin a mass killing spree due to in part to the fact that they were born during an eclipse,...

Straight out of the vaults of Vhsps (that’s the Video Home System Preservation Society to the uninitiated) we bring you the 1988 classic feature of hypnosis, teen angst and most of all… a man eating brain controlled by none other than Dr. Carl Hill or at least David Gale. VHS junkies get your head cleaners ready. Make sure your tapes are rewound (or face the $.50 penalty). We’re going to give you something to think about (Pun You!)

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

The sick and twisted minds behind the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have launched a brand new horror and sci-fi themed fest: Bloodfest Fantastique! Australia gets a lot more blood-soaked on June 10-18, nine nights of some of the most gruesome, terrifying and far-out films, past and present, from around the world.
While Muff has never been shy about screening genre films, Richard Wolstencroft — founder and director of both fests — is planning for his newest endeavor to simply be a celebration of his two favorite genres of filmmaking, without all the politicking hooha-ery that surrounds Muff.
So, there’s still a very underground-esque flavor to Bloodfest. The newer flicks in the festival have a scrappy, inventive, degenerate quality, from slice and dice em’s like Chris Sun’s Come and Get Me, Chad Ferrin’s Someone’s Knocking at the Door and Geoff Klein Bikini Girls on Ice; to monster flicks...

In the wake of the success of Halloween the floodgates opened for literally hundreds of stalk and slash/slice and dice/body count movies. We all have our favorites and ranking up near the top for us is the killer kid classic Bloody Birthday. Perhaps most famous for the before-she-was-famous topless dance of MTV star Julie Brown, the film was directed by Canadian exploitation auteur Ed Hunt (The Brain, Diary Of A Sinner)...

Bloody Birthday (1981) D: Ed Hunt Lori Lethin, Elizabeth Hoy, Billy Jacoby Who says you need a strong scientific foundation for science fiction? Certainly not the makers of Bloody Birthday. Maybe devoted zodiac followers will find the premise a little more believable. Here it is in a nutshell, a gaggle (pride? pack? flock?) of babies is born at the same hospital on the same night. Unfortunately, at that very moment there is an eclipse which blocks out the influence of Saturn. See, Saturn's gravitational pull is what gives people their emotions. Without that influence, the children are...
