In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

Neither Studio Trigger nor its cofounder Hiroyuki Imaishi are strangers to anime fans. Having directed the irreverent “Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt” and the over-the-top “Gurenn Lagan”, Imaishi has made a name for himself with his work on stylishly unconventional media. Though neither as vulgar nor as action-packed as either work respectively, “Space Patrol Luluco” provided another notch on Imaishi's belt not just as director but as creator.

Television is going full fan boy for video game adaptations.
Earlier this month, Amazon greenlit a new series based on award-winning PlayStation game God of War, with Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board.
HBO’s The Last of Us, a hotly-anticipated small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors, drops Jan. 15.
They join a long list of game-to-series adaptations, from Halo (Paramount+) to Twisted Metal (Peacock) and Horizon (Netflix). Alongside God of War, Amazon is also moving forward with its TV version of post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout, being adapted by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.

Implementing the great drawing and animation style of Studio Trigger, which has resulted in titles like “Kill La Kill, “Promare” and “Bna”, featuring an opening by Franz Ferdinand, and based on a story by Polish writers Bartosz Sztybor, Jan Bartkowicz and Łukasz Ludkowski, that has, thankfully, left all notions of political correctness out of the title, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is definitely one of the best anime titles of the year.
The story takes place in Night City, a self-reliant metropolis located in the Free State of California that suffers from extensive corporate corruption, cybernetic addiction, and gang violence. The city is split into six districts, each of which has its own precise living requirements, and is controlled by a number of different megacorporations, including Arasaka and its rival Militech. In Santo Domingo, the oldest, poorest, and most industrial district of Night City is where we meet the main protagonist, an impulsive...

"Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an animated spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077," a blockbuster sci-fi dystopian video game that itself was made in a pretty dystopian manner. It's also the newest show by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of "Gurren Lagann" and "Promare."
Imaishi started as an animator and director at the legendary studio Gainax before co-founding Studio Trigger with fellow Gainax staff including Yoh Yoshinari. His work features bombastic action, rude humor, and enough lens flares to give J.J. Abrams a headache. Imaishi's work is popular among international fans, some of whom were inspired to become animators themselves. Others argue that Imaishi's descendants, such as Yoshimichi Kameda and Imaishi's protege Akira Amemiya, have long surpassed him as animator and director respectively. Even so, "Edgerunners" holds its own in what is set to be a very busy fall for the anime industry.
Imaishi crams his animated works with references to shows, movies and comics he likes.

One of the more exciting animated projects set to debut on Netflix this year is "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners." Based on the highly promoted (and barely finished) video game, the series was pitched as a new production by the famous Studio Trigger. Bombastic action specialist Hiroyuki Imaishi is directing, wunderkind animator Yoh Yoshinari is contributing character designs, and much of the studio's creative brain trust is on board. Not to mention some first-time collaborators, like "Silent Hill" composer Akira Yamaoka. This Star Wars: Visions article contains spoilers.
Seven animation studios have come together to create Star Wars: Visions, a collection of nine anime short films that reimagines the galaxy far, far away through the lens of Japanese culture and aesthetics. It’s one of the most ambitious projects Lucasfilm has ever embarked on with the saga, and it’s an experiment that largely pays off, as it not only brings fresh perspectives to Star Wars but also new characters, from the mysterious swordsman known only as Ronin to a little droid named T0-B1 who wants nothing more than to become a real Jedi Knight.
The stories in Visions take place across several eras of the Star Wars saga, including after The Rise of Skywalker, but are these tales part of the official Disney canon? Here’s what you need to know.

The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

Studio Trigger is working on a Cyberpunk 2077-based anime series called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which is set to debut on Netflix in 2022.

The first of the three masterful collaborations the duo of Hiroyuki Imaishi as director and veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima as script-writer gave us (“Kill la Kill” and “Promare” are the other two) was a truly game-changing title, which reinvigorated the rather preterit at the time mecha genre in ways no one could have imagined.

From the moment Studio Trigger first unleashed “Kill la Kill” on the world, we’ve been enthralled by their unique mix of intense, flamboyant action and well-developed characters that have made it and the likes of “Ssss.Gridman” such celebrated fan favourites. Anyone already familiar with their work may have had an idea of the undiluted joy that awaits them, yet Studio Trigger’s first feature film exceeds expectations as a culmination of Imaishi’s work that needs to be experienced sprawling across the big screen.
Burning bright at the core of “Promare” are its two central characters, the self-proclaimed moron Galo, and the terrorist leader Lio. Fuelled by passion and a tendency to act without thinking, Galo’s mix of charm and macho charisma makes him the perfect pilot for this adrenaline rush of a film, and a compelling contrast to Lio’s cool, androgynous persona. Fuelled by passion and a tendency to act without thinking, Galo’s mix of charm and macho charisma makes him the perfect pilot for this adrenaline rush of a film, and a compelling contrast to Lio’s cool, androgynous persona. When their fates...

All was fairly quiet on the specialty box office front this week, with the debut of just a handful of films. The most notable of the bunch was Matt Tyrnauer’s riveting Where’s My Roy Cohn? Other openers this weekend included a Loro, as well as Gunpowder & Sky’s horror-comedy Villains, starring It Chapter Two‘s Bill Skarsgård and Kyra Sedgwick, which had openings that were decent, but nothing earth-shattering.
Sony Pictures Classics feature documentary Where’s My Roy Cohn? opened exclusively in New York and Los Angeles on four screens, and is estimated to rake in $42,364. Deadline learned that it performed better in New York than it did in Los Angeles — which is probably because the ruthless Donald Trump mentor was more of a New York figure. Nonetheless, Spc hopes to add to its box office stack once Roy Cohn continues to expand next week.

Anime maniacs have been waiting for this day: Eight years ago, Hiroyuki Imaishi co-founded Studio Trigger with the goal of one day hatching a feature as wild and innovative as his TV series “Gurren Lagann” and “Kill la Kill.” Now he has. Every bit as loud and ambitious as one might expect from a visual artist with such a hyperactive imagination, .
With “Promare,” which has already earned $10 million in its native Japan, the payoff is the seamless mix of 2D elements in 3D environments with a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack that seeps in at the right times. Best seen with a rowdy audience — like those who came out for dubbed and subtitled versions shown via nationwide Fathom Events screenings on Sept. 17 and 19 — this cult-ready Gkids release will get a more traditional rollout in larger U.S. markets starting Sept. 20.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

All cinema is wonderful, but there’s a certain wonder that’s only possible through animation. We have almost grown numb to how realistic computer-graphic animation has advanced, but there are few things akin to the experience of being transported to a dreamworld that lets its colors wash over and swallow you whole. Similarly, anime has reached some staggering heights of what’s possible through traditional animation, and in many ways Promare sets a new standard in that area, delivering visuals that will be discussed for years and strive to be matched and surpassed. It’s a gorgeous, fun fever dream of a movie that captures the exact spirit of what makes anime so magical and powerful.

"Someone has to shoulder the fate of mankind." GKids has unveiled the full-length official Us trailer for the Japanese anime feature film Promare, from animation filmmaker Hiroyuki Imaishi. We featured the first teasers previously, but give this full trailer a look. This is the first feature-length film made by the acclaimed studio known as Trigger. "Promare uses a bold cel-shaded visual style to tell a blistering action-adventure story, and is the spiritual successor to many of director Imaishi’s former works." The story follows Galo and the Burning Rescue Fire Department who battle against "Mad Burnish", a group of mutants who are able to control and wield flames, and the fire disaster they have unleashed on Earth. The main Japanese voice cast features Arata Furuta, Tetsu Inada, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Masato Sakai, Taichi Saotome, and Kenichi Matsuyama. Glad to see this will be playing in theaters in the Us. Here's the...

Injecting an intoxicating shot of frantic energy and sleek color directly into your pupils, the postapocalyptic sci-fi action saga “Promare” plays like an anime-induced euphoric trip.
Marking the first feature release for both Japanese outfit Studio Trigger and its co-founder and director Hiroyuki Imaishi, this visual potion spiced with fiery duels and supernatural machinery is at its most potent when taken without much concern for its bewildering mechanics.
Imaishi is best known for fan-favorite shows “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann,” works that feature campy erotic innuendos mostly missing from “Promare.” And he carries over the vividly graphic style of animation and fast-paced editing from those episodic hits into his theatrical debut, based on a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kazuki Nakashima (“Batman Ninja”).

Described as being in the tradition of International Emmy winner Generation War, the limited series is based on the novel by Siegfried Lenz that centers on a young Wehrmacht soldier who is stranded in the no man’s land of the Polish forests, surrounded by partisans, questioning the meaning of duty, conscience, friendship and love. Jannis Niewöhner (Maximilian And Marie De Bourgogne) stars alongside Malgorzata Mikolajczak, Sebastian Urzendowsky (The Counterfeiters), Rainer Bock (Never Look Away) and Ulrich Tukur (The Lives Of Others). Anime fans are hoping that animation Trigger will bring back fan-favorite character Zero-Two for Darling In The FranXX Season 2. It really depends on how they plan on ending Episode 24, but is it possible that the second season of DarliFra could be similar to the second act of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? Keep in mind that studio Trigger was founded by former Gainax employees Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ohtsuka. Besides meaning that certain characters are doomed, audiences could end up watching another […]

Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson)
A travelogue through one artist’s subconscious, Cameraperson is perhaps the most plural film of 2016 – a formal, tonal, situational, and pacing exercise that lulls viewers into thinking it’s set on one thing before turning towards seemingly new territory. And it never feels out-of-balance because director Kirsten Johnson has, by building this film around moments that “marked” her, granted such an intimate experience that it almost feels wrong to intellectualize much of anything that’s going on here,...

Since the dawn of the 21st century, action cinema has undergone a bigger change than perhaps any other genre. As the tools with which filmmakers craft their works have continually advanced, a sort of renaissance has begun wherein action films stepped firmly into their own. Often put in the same category as horror — not taken seriously as a form of artistic expression outside of its core fanbase — action has had to boldly announce itself as a viable medium through which big set pieces, but also big ideas, can be presented and explored.

Japanese Anime Kill La Kill kicked into a whole new gear in 2014. We salute a daring, daft series available now on Netflix...
Kill La Kill. Regardless of what it means - allegedly it’s a series of Japanese double-entendres - that title is a bomb-blast: two kills and a dose of French sophistication for good measure. It's a violently amusing name for the anime series, promising claret by the bucketload, a ticking brain (or just the right amount of snark) and the everlasting appeal of total nonsense. Logic may apply, be it worldly or otherwise, but you're already set for the rules to be broken.
Despite airing its first half of episodes last year, Klk kicked into a whole other gear in 2014, garnering a large international following as it barrelled towards its March finale. The entire series is currently bubbling away on Netflix for immediate watching, and it is something...

Though I’ve seen the Anime Expo advertisements on buses in years past, 2009 is the first year I’ve ever attended. While aspects made it sound like a good time to be had, the prospect of wading through a sea of smelly, poorly costumed cosplayers (some of whom were sure to be men as characters of the opposite gender) wasn’t especially appealing to me. It all seemed some barbaric gathering of people with low artistic standards and strange rituals.
Enter a friend of mine who shall be nameless for the moment. After his bringing up the upcoming Anime Expo, I got a tad nervous at the idea of actually going for once. Yet, my spirit of adventure and curiosity about the art of anime (my interest had laid dormant since the day I decided to stop liking Pokemon) wrung from me a final verdict of “Why not?” Moe enthusiasts and yaoi fangirls aside,...
