Exclusive: Melanie Marnich is a huge fan of Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty’s work, but when showrunning an adaptation of Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall, Marnich blocked the HBO hit from her consciousness almost entirely.
Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which stars 2024 Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, launches tomorrow and is in international competition at next week’s Series Mania, was made with a Big Little Lies-free lens, Marnich explained to Deadline.
“I admire Big Little Lies and think it’s brilliant but I had to literally put it out my mind,” she said in the days leading up to the Lille market. “I knew I had to quite quickly ignore all [Moriarty’s past work] and ask what this book wants to be and what the best way is to honor it. How do I ignore all that came before to find the best voice and vision for this translation?”

Peacock has released the full trailer of Apples Never Fall, the limited series starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill, based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel.
“You can spend a lifetime with someone as a wife or as a mother, but you can never really know who they are,” Bening’s Joy says in the trailer.
The series revolves around the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family, anchored by former tennis coaches Stan (Neill) and Joy (Bening), who have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.
Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles play Stan and Joy’s adult children in the 7-episode series written and executive produced by Melanie Marnich.
The logline for the show says that “everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing.

The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.

But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. But hey! A sustainable 20% is still pretty good. And for cineastes,...

Has there been a greater bait-and-switch in recent memory than "Magic Mike"? The trailers for director Steven Soderbergh's 2012 dramedy -- itself loosely based on star Channing Tatum's real-life experiences as an "exotic dancer" -- promised to deliver a whole lot of male stripper shenanigans for a fun Friday night of frivolity. The actual film, on the other hand, was a far more sobering look at not just the reality of what life is like as a professional stripper but also the economic hardships faced by working-class individuals like Tatum's Michael "Magic Mike" Lane in the wake of the 2007 financial crisis. In his defense, Soderbergh likened the film to a Robert Altman joint ahead of its release, so you can't exactly accuse him personally of trojan-horsing anyone.
The second "Magic Mike" film, "Magic Mike Xxl," hewed closer to what audiences expected from the first movie. Helmed by Soderbergh's longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs,...

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more unlikely trilogy in recent memory than "Magic Mike." When Steven Soderbergh's original movie hit theaters in 2012, audiences went in anticipating a frivolous good time, only to be treated to a surprisingly thoughtful, nuanced examination of stripper culture and the economic realities of life in the post-Financial Crisis world. Three years later, "Magic Mike Xxl" zagged in a different direction, combining road trip hijinks with a sex-positive rumination on women's needs and male camaraderie.
The tale of Michael "Magic Mike" Lane (Channing Tatum) has now been brought to a close with "Magic Mike's Last Dance," which also has Soderbergh back in the director's chair. True to its name, the film sees Channing Tatum's eponymous retired stripper turned furniture business owner hit the stage one last time to produce a play -- and maybe something more -- in London with the aid of a...

After watching the trailer for Apple TV+’s Extrapolations it’s obvious that Timothée Chalamet has a legitimate grievance. (Watch his Apple TV+ “Call Me” ad on YouTube.) Apple TV+ has attracted pretty much every big-name actor yet Chalamet still hasn’t received an invitation. Just in Extrapolations alone, they’ve got Meryl Streep, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, Tobey Maguire, Forest Whitaker, and dozens more. What gives, Apple TV+?
The cast of the eight-episode limited series also includes Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Daveed Diggs, Yara Shahidi, Matthew Rhys, Gemma Chan, David Schwimmer, Keri Russell, Adarsh Gourav, Indira Varma, and Marion Cotillard. It's not something any of us want to confront, but thanks to Apple TV+, climate change is at the forefront of a new prestige drama called "Extrapolations" — and the streamer has released the series' first trailer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to a world where some of our woes are solved — the trailer asserts that cancer has been cured — but others are only just beginning. Earth is now ravaged by the effects of climate change, and it is up to those of us left to try to find a way forward for human survival.
The series was written and directed by Scott Z. Burns (the writer of "Contagion" and director of "The Report"), and will unfold over an eight-episode season of interconnected stories. Its official synopsis reads:

When Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike was released in 2012, it’s doubtful that anyone knew entirely what to expect. A film about male strippers that was loosely based on the star of the film, Channing Tatum, and his own experiences in the world of stripping seemed unlikely to spawn a sprawling and vocal fanbase—much less the Magic Mike Cinematic Universe (or Mmcu for short). But that’s exactly what it did.

The words “Magic Mike” may conjure up images of sweaty, sculpted, undulating men, dancing unthreateningly for hoards of screaming women, but there has always been a backdrop of brutal economic reality looming over the fantasy world.
The unlikely franchise has explored the escalating devaluation of physical laborers, the suffocating effects of the college industrial complex, predatory loan businesses, recession and even Covid-19, which has effectively destroyed poor Mike Lane’s furniture business in this latest film.
When we re-meet Channing Tatum’s gentle hunk in “ Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” in theatres Friday, he’s bartending at parties for the very rich in Miami. The gig could be worse, but though he doesn’t quite say it, the implication is that he’s even aged out of dancing now. He has to seriously think about it when his wealthy employer offers him 6,000 for a dance later that evening.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance once again reinvents its intentions, approaching the world of male entertainers in a new light that concludes the trilogy. Director Steven Soderbergh returns to this story after sitting out 2015’s Magic Mike Xxl, leaving Gregory Jacobs to take the reins. The third film leans heavier into rom-com territory, but it still leaves room for the flashy antics.

The end of the world is a pretty lucrative topic when it comes to films and TV shows; It seems everyone is ready to get on board the minute a disaster looms. Recently, the pandemic has ushered in a whole host of shows about society's collapse after an infectious disease overtakes everything, with shows like "Station Eleven" and "The Last of Us" being two of the most recent adaptations to make it to TV. But they are not the first shows to explore what might happen to society when faced with a cataclysmic event, and they most certainly will not be the last. In fact, this March will see the release of a new show, "Extrapolations," which will approach the subject of humanity's existence on earth in a more subdued, but still terrifying kind of way. Back in May 2019, Boston-based fans of bare torsos and body rolls were delivered a blow when the news broke that "Magic Mike The Musical" had canceled its planned pre-Broadway engagement at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre. Per Deadline, the producers said that "they don't feel the musical is ready for production" -- unsurprising, given that several members of the creative team had exited a few weeks earlier.
The cancelation, in hindsight, meant that the producers dodged a pandemic-shaped bullet. With the Boston show planned to run until January 2020, "Magic Mike The Musical" would have been scheduled to open on Broadway at around the same time that a stay-at-home order was issued in New York City amid rapidly rising Covid-19 cases. Yet Soderbergh's decision to shelve the Broadway musical and instead direct a third "Magic Mike" movie, the upcoming "Magic Mike's Last Dance," wasn't the result of a psychic premonition. He had...

Make sure you replace the batteries in your handheld fan before watching Magic Mike’s Last Dance because the film’s finale includes a 30-minute dance sequence. That’s right, folks! Thirty minutes of swiveling hips, vivacious voguing, and sweat pouring down like a cold November rain. Steven Soderbergh is returning for the threequel after Gregory Jacobs directed the second film in the series, Magic Mike Xxl.
Speaking with Empire magazine, Soderbergh talked about the upcoming film’s big finish, saying, “We wanted to blow the dancing up in a big way.” Soderbergh then let the cat out of the bag by adding, “We have this dance number with Channing [Tatum] and Salma [Hayek] right up front. And then the last 30-plus minutes of the movie are just this giant dance sequence.”

Channing Tatum returns as “Magic” Mike Lane for a last fling and dance in London in the trailer for Warner Bros.’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance comedy that dropped on Tuesday.
Finding himself broke and bartending in Florida, Lane hooks up with a wealthy socialite, played by Salma Hayek Pinault, who lures him to London with an offer he can’t refuse, and an agenda all her own. “People are numb, disconnected. We’re going to wake them up with a wave of passion they’ve never felt before,” Hayek Pinault says at one point in the trailer to describe the dance show spectacular that Magic Mike will headline.
Lane has to then whip a new dance troupe into shape to succeed, or fail, with his latest business venture. The threequel sees Tatum return to his signature role as a male stripper...

"We're going to wake them up with a wave of passion they've never felt before!" Warner Bros has unveiled the first official trailer for Magic Mike's Last Dance, the next sequel in the beloved Magic Mike series. It's headed to theaters in February!! This one brings back Steven Soderbergh to direct again - he made the first one back in 2012, but let Gregory Jacobs direct the second one (Xxl in 2015). Now it's time for his "last dance!" The plot for this one involves Mike being taken to London to start an exciting new male reveue show with a new partnership. Can he pull it off? Are there ulterior motives? Channing Tatum returns to star again as the famous male stripper Mike Lane. The cast for this sequel includes Salma Hayek, Ayub Khan Din, Caitlin Gerard, Gavin Spokes, with newcomers Jemelia George, Juliette Motamed, and Vicki Pepperdine. Oh yes!! What a trailer!

It may be Magic Mike’s last dance, but Channing Tatum is going out with more than bang.
The third “Magic Mike” film, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” debuted its trailer featuring Tatum teasing a titillating onstage performance as the titular erotic dancer. Per the official synopsis, “Magic” Mike Lane (Tatum) takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida. For what he hopes will be one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek Pinault) who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse…and an agenda all her own.
With everything on the line, once Mike discovers what she truly has in mind, will he — and the roster of hot new dancers he’ll have to whip into shape — be able to pull it off?

Either Channing Tatum’s Mike Lane is pregnant, or Salma Hayek is learning to read a new form of brail in the new Magic Mike’s Last Dance image. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, dollars will rain, and junk will swing like a pendulum when the Steven Soderbergh-directed sequel gyrates its way into cinemas. Initially, Magic Mike’s Last Dance was destined for HBO Max. However, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav is salivating for box office Somalians and wants Tatum and company to shake what their mama gave them on the big screen. The third chapter of the Magic Mike franchise oils up in theaters on February 10, 2023, the same weekend as the Super Bowl! How much ball handling can the public take in one weekend? We’ll soon find out.

Warner Bros on Friday unveiled a first-look photo for its third and final Magic Mike film, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, reuniting Channing Tatum with director Steven Soderbergh. See it below.
Magic Mike is a film franchise centered on the world of male stripping, which the pair launched with the 2012 film of the same name. Pic was followed up by the 2015 sequel Magic Mike Xxl, directed by Gregory Jacobs, with the two films collectively grossing nearly 286 million at the global box office. They at the same time spurred the creation of the popular stage show Magic Mike Live, which launched in Las Vegas before expanding to London, Berlin and other major cities, including others in the U.S.

Exclusive: Keeping in line with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s business belief that movies are destined for theatrical, not streaming, the originally conceived Steven Soderbergh-directed HBO Max threequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance is heading to theaters on February 10, 2023 — Super Bowl weekend. Warner Bros already had the date set aside on the release calendar.
There’s a window between theatrical and HBO Max, with Premium VOD in between, I understand.
The threequel returns franchise star Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, Caitlin Gerard and Gavin Spokes. Reid Carolin wrote the screenplay. Gregory Jacobs, who directed the 2015 hit Magic Mike Xxl, returns to produce along with Carolin, Nick Wechsler and Peter Kiernan.
Tatum has had a number of films that have launched in the Valentine’s Day corridor and mid-February including Dog this year which had a massive, unheard of multiple at 4.1x, opening to 14.9 million and finaled at 61.8M. Tatum...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
When the announcement came that “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third movie in Channing Tatum’s male stripper franchise, had the greenlight, it was revealed the film would premiere directly on HBO Max. However, director Steven Soderbergh says a theatrical run is still on the table. “We’re talking about it,” Soderbergh told me recently while promoting the “Magic Mike Live” tour, which makes its North American debut in Miami in October. “It’s certainly hard to argue that this isn’t a movie that’s best seen in a theater, because we have the data. People, primarily women, were going in packs, in large groups, to see the ‘Magic Mike’ movies.”

Channing Tatum's Michael Lane is coming back for one last dance in, uh, "Magic Mike's Last Dance." The third entry in the "Magic Mike" film series will feature "Magic Mike" director Steven Soderbergh back at the helm after his longtime assistant director, Gregory Jacobs, called the shots on 2015's marvelously-titled — and just plain marvelous — "Magic Mike Xxl" (although Soderbergh still acted as the sequel's director of photography and editor). However, unlike the movies before it, "Magic Mike's Last Dance" will debut exclusively on HBO Max ... which doesn't mean it will skip theaters entirely, at least if Soderbergh has anything to say...

Channing Tatum is gearing up for his last dance as "Magic Mike," and this time, he won't be dancing alone. And no, we're not just talking about his reunion with Steven Soderbergh, who helmed the first "Magic Mike" movie and who served as the cinematographer and editor of its sequel, "Magic Mike Xxl," under Ad-turned-director Gregory Jacobs. For "Magic Mike's Last Dance," it seems there will be more of a relationship aspect than there has been in previous movies, where romance took a backseat to Mike Lane's adventures as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida.

Director Steven Soderbergh, writer Reid Carolin, and star Channing Tatum are set to reunite for the third installment in the “Magic Mike” series, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. has set up the next installment, with Tatum returning as dancer Mike Lane. The twist? Gregory Jacobs, who directed 2015’s “Magic Mike Xxl” after Soderbergh helmed the 2012 original, will return to produce the film along with Carolin ,Nick Wechsler, and Peter Kiernan.
Altogether, the first films have grossed almost $300 million worldwide, and have spawned a successful stage show known as “Magic Mike Live,” which started in Vegas before traveling abroad. A multiyear North American tour has been set,...
