Throughout the 80s, he continued to light up the screen and show the world that he had all of the ingredients he needed to be a star. However, as his career went on, things started to change. A lot of times when asking what happened to a person it might be assumed that the actor is retired, deceased, or has otherwise fallen off the map. But then again, there are a lot of times when that actor has simply been kind of an extra for a good part of their career. Gabriel Jarret is one of the latter since he’s been around for a while now and he’s still working, but it’s safe to say that he’s kind of tucked up in one role or another where people might not always notice him as much. There are

Grab some popcorn and pull up a chair, it’s a moral imperative that we celebrate the 35th birthday of Martha Coolidge’s science whiz classic Real Genius!
The wise-cracking Val Kilmer starrer, which details the adventures of a group of brilliant physics undergrads at the fictional Pacific Tech University (clearly a stand-in for Caltech), stands as a wonderful slice of ’80s fun. It’s the kind of feel-good adventure that can be watched over and over again, spun like a favorite album.
Kilmer plays Chris Knight, a senior at Pacific Tech on the verge of burnout after years working with a special research team under the tutelage of the sleazy Dr. Jerry Hathaway (William Atherton). Chris, now prone to wearing goofy t-shirts and slippers and generally flaunting any sort of authority with playful jabs, convinces Hathaway to let him room with brilliant freshman Mitch Taylor (Gabriel Jarret), a 15-year-old winter term addition to campus.

Val Kilmer is having a moment, thanks to Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s whatever-happened-to…? portrait of him in The New York Times Magazine, which was pegged to the release of his memoir “I’m Your Huckleberry.” It’s one of those buzzy voyeuristic profiles that takes the measure of a movie star who slipped between the cracks and became a gonzo ghost/parody of himself, propelled at times by an engine of self-destructive behavior. Yet the Kilmer saga is singular. In his heyday, he looked like a brainy sun god and was a hard-to-cast, flaked-out talent who fell away from Hollywood without ever having entirely fit into it. The Times profile captures Kilmer the high-flying eccentric and the Christian Scientist. The acting prima donna and the has-been. The throat-cancer victim who lost his voice and now speaks in a whisper. The cockeyed optimist and the survivor. And the legend?

It has been a very “up and down” sort of career for Val Kilmer- lauded and inundated with a multitude of offers one minute- mocked and reduced to saccharine sub-tv movies the next. For every Top Gun enjoyed, there has been a Red Planet endured, for every venerated The Doors, there has been a Batman Forever panned. Not all his fault, of course- few can turn down the lure of the caped-crusader, but history would have been very different had he donned the bat-suit under the tutelage of a director more akin to Christopher Nolan than Joel Schumacher.
Certainly, few possessed Nolan’s breathy charisma which has an effortlessness that intrigues infinitely more than Bale’s over-earnest method acting.
If there has been one film starring Kilmer that has increased in reputation since its release, it is the independent comedy, Real Genius, the story of two science students exacting revenge upon their senior tutor.

The summer of 1985. Has it really been twenty-five years. Wow! I don't really feel old, but its amazing that era was so long ago and yet the memories feel like yesterday. I was ten going on eleven and enjoying my summer break. Though my parents wouldn't let me leave my neighborhood with my friends, they always took me to the cinema as often as they could, which is where my love of movies comes from. I consider myself fortunate to have shared some great movie moments with my family and with my parents coming to town to visit me this summer, we hope to have some more.Hollywood still makes great movies today, but the eighties were a time when most of the movies you saw were good. At least they seemed to be good at that early age. Time can often be cruel and with maturity comes the revelation...

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Nineteen eighty-five was a great year film wise. In addition to Back to the Future (and, ahem, Teen Wolf, both starring Michael J. Fox), moviegoers in 1985 could pick from any number of soon-to-be classics, near-classics, or soon-to-be cable fodder at movie theaters, including Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rocky IV, Jewel of the Nile, Out of Africa (a multiple Academy Award winner), Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, The Goonies, Year of the Dragon, Young Sherlock Holmes, and for the horror-oriented, George A. Romero's Day of the Dead, and Return of the Living Dead, a horror-parody of Romero's contributions to the undead sub-genre. For me, Martha Coolidge's Real Genius, a Reagan-era, geek comedy-satire loaded with quotable lines, memorable scenes, a synth-pop score by a who's who of 80s' one-hit wonders, and Val Kilmer, giving one of his all-time best performances, deserves to be at or...

Of all the 80s movies you could conceive of Hollywood throwing into the Brundlefly remake machine to come outlooking all shiny, new and yet mutated, you probably thought quote-factory Val Kilmer vehicle Real Genius was safe. You thought wrong.According to Pajiba’s increasingly reliable Hollywood Cog source, Imagine Entertainment (yes, that’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer) have now targeted the movie as a likely candidate. The 1985 original, which despite a low box office result, remains a beloved cult comedy for those of a certain age (raises hand, nods head), followed the (mis)adventures of college students figuring out their own intellects while simultaneously being duped by a slimy professor (William Atherton, the king of such roles) into working on a laser project that will be twisted into military uses.Naturally, they fight back, but before any of that, there’s time for a coming of age tale about...

Last month I recommended that Hollywood throw more work at William Atherton, of Ghostbusters, Die Hard and Real Genius fame. I even encouraged the years-old plan for a Real Genius sequel so long as Atherton returned as Jerry Hathaway. Well, that support has gone unnoticed, and instead there's rumor today that Columbia Pictures and original producer Brian Grazer are remaking the 1985 science-nerd comedy. Pajiba has the scoop -- courtesy of their consistently reliable yet anonymous source -- in a post that also brings word of a House Party reboot. Which one hurts your childhood more?
For me, it's definitely Real Genius. I'm imagining computer-generated popcorn overfilling Hathaway's house and romantic leads who aren't quite as awkwardly gender-neutral as Gabe Jarret and Michelle Meyrink. The whole thing slaps this version of me right in the face. Those nerd movies of the '80s, whether as popular as Revenge of the Nerds...

In the 1980s, moviegoers learned that being a Real Genius meant making sure the technology you developed didn't fall into the wrong hands -- and by "wrong hands" the movie meant the U.S. military. Most audiences were happy to see a group of nerdy tech students, led by Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) and Mitch Taylor (Gabriel Jarret), prevent the government from acquiring a megawatt laser weapon capable of vaporizing human...
It’s Thursday, so it’s time to remake an 80s classic TV show or movie with an all-new cast. This week: Real Genius, the 1985 comedy about science geeks, college life, and the military-industrial complex. (This Dream Cast was suggested by reader John. If you have a suggestion for an 80s TV show or movie we should play with, feel free to email me.) The original cast included: Chris Knight: Val Kilmer Mitch Taylor: Gabe Jarret Professor Jerry Hathaway: William Atherton Jordan Cochran: Michelle Meyrink Lazlo Hollyfeld: Jon Gries Oh my god, don’t hate me, but I’ve never actually seen Real Genius, so I’m gonna have to sit this one out. Well, sort of. If I had to pick a young Val Kilmer for today, I’d probably go with Michael Cera. I feel I’m constantly picking Cera for teen stuff, but he’s really...
