After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s updating guide to season 49’s SNL hosts and musical guests.

I know you’re all itching to own Madame Web on Blu-ray, 4K, DVD, digital, or VHS. However, some are trying to save some money during these tough economic times. If you still want to see Sony’s latest Spidey Universe flick but don’t have the dough, we have some good news!
Madame Web is coming to Netflix! Horray!
Yes, the streaming company announced X this week without a hint of irony. In fact, Netflix seems to be under the impression the movie has a following.
In case Netflix doesn’t have the ability to see this tweet being deleted in the future, here’s what it says:
“Her web will connect us all…again. Madame Web is coming to Netflix in the US May 14!“

Madame Web arrived in theaters earlier this year and is seemingly destined to go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, it earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it a critical and commercial flop Sony won't easily recover from. Of course, it's too late now to change its 2024 slate as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter are fast approaching.
Box office numbers like the ones above confirm the vast majority of fans and regular moviegoers didn't bother seeing Madame Web on the big screen, but you'll soon be able to watch it at home... provided you have a Netflix subscription.
When does Madame Web premiere on Netflix?
The streaming service has confirmed today that the Marvel movie will hit the streaming platform on May 14; that's right, you have only two weeks to wait until you can experience Madame Web...

If you never caught Madame Web in theaters (I certainly wouldn’t blame you) but still want to check out the box office and critical disaster, you might be interested to know that the film will be coming to Netflix on May 14th.
Madame Web was a bit of a disaster, which is a shame for any project that people worked hard on, but you’ve got to wonder what type of movie the creative team had originally envisioned. While there was potential there, the final result wasted every opportunity. You had Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor as three different Spider-Women… except we never really get to see this in action beyond a few glimpses into the future. Toss in some bewildering dialogue and subpar action, and you’re just left scratching your head.
Madame Web star Dakota Johnson later slammed the movie, saying she would never do anything like it again.

Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans all star in Materialists, the next film from Oscar-nominated Past Lives director Celine Song. Filming’s now underway in New York.
Given writer-director Celine Song’s elegant 2023 romance Past Lives was nominated for two Oscars – including Best Picture – it’s little surprise that trendy production company A24 was keen to work with her again.
Song’s follow-up movie is somewhat different in tone from her debut, and much starrier: in here we have Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and the phenomenally busy Pedro Pascal. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s production list, filming was due to start in New York on the 15th May; there are now reports, however, that the shoot has already begun.
World of Reel has spotted a couple tweets that appear to confirm this, with one even showing Dakota Johnson on location in Manhattan. Here’s one now:...

Sony Pictures Classics announced on Wednesday that it will release Nathan Silver’s acclaimed comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), in theaters nationwide on August 23.
The film will open against Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios), the animated pic 200% Wolf (Viva Pictures), the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd (Lionsgate), and the drama The Forge from Affirm Films.
Slated to make its New York debut at Tribeca in June, after playing both Sundance and Berlin to great reviews, Between the Temples follows Ben (Schwartzman), a forty-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly de Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

Following her appearance in Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney witnessed an unprecedented surge in opportunities coming her way. From Marvel movies to horror flicks, the actress is gradually turning into a Hollywood staple. Meanwhile, there appears another possible opportunity for Sweeney in the potential Spider-Man 4.
Sydney Sweeney in a still from Madame Web
While Sydney Sweeney is interested in joining the MCU, there seems a way for her Madame Web character to venture into Spider-Man 4. Sweeney’s appearance could come with a slight change to her character, or the actress might enter the MCU in a completely different role, since she is being fan-cast as Black Cat.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson will star in Hell Or High Water director David Mackenzie’s British thriller Fuze, due to start filming in June.
As we reported in February, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is going to be leading the cast of a new British-set action thriller titled Fuze. While rumours regarding the actor’s chances of being the next 007 refuse to go away, Taylor-Johnson looks to have secured himself another chance to build on his excellent action credentials.
The film is being directed by David Mackenzie, the filmmaker behind 2016’s hugely underrated Hell Or High Water, a Texan bank heist drama starring Chris Pine that is well worth seeking out if you haven’t seen it yet. Following that, Mackenzie collaborated with Pine again on 2018’s Outlaw King, although that film released to a more muted reception.

Over 2 months ago, ‘Madame Web’ hit theaters, and it didn’t go well. The movie bombed at the box office, only making $6 million on its first day. It couldn’t even compete with big hitters like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.’ or the recently released ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, falling short even of ‘Morbius’. Critics slammed it, giving it a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences weren’t much kinder at 57%, earning it the “rotten” label.
People didn’t like the story, calling it all over the place. Plus, there was a bit of false advertising with the trailers showing the Spider-Women as fully powered and costumed when they weren’t in the movie. Fans had plenty of theories about why it tanked, blaming everything from not knowing the source material to issues with the cast and crew. Dakota Johnson didn’t sugarcoat it in a recent interview,...

More than 2 months ago ‘Madame Web’ was released and the results have been catastrophic. The movie was an obvious box-office flop earning only $6 million on its first day. Instead of competing with the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. ‘ or at least, the recently released ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ the movie did not manage to outperform ‘Morbius.’ There’s also the issue of critical reception, the movie is currently rated at 12% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics and 57% by the audience, making the movie “rotten.”
The story was highly criticized for being disjointed, and there’s also the issue of somewhat false advertising as the promo photos and trailers showed all three Spider-Women already having superpowers and fully costumed, but in the movie, we don’t even see their origin stories. Fans pointed out many possible reasons for a failure of such massive scope, among them being the unfamiliarity with the source material,...

Looking for a genuinely heart-pounding, inventive blockbuster for your summer movie-watching schedule? Consider something classic: Tom Tykwer’s clever 1999 thriller “Run Lola Run.” In celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary, Sony Pictures Classics announced Friday that they will reissue the film in theaters on June 7, timed to coincide with the film’s original U.S. release. The anniversary reissue will feature a new Dcp from the 4K restoration, “created in collaboration with the filmmakers.”
Written and directed by Tykwer, “Run Lola Run” was a breakout smash hit for both the filmmaker and his star Franka Potente. Per today’s announcement, at the time of its original release, the film was “hailed for its experimental structure, propulsive techno score, and Potente’s fierce performance as the titular, flame-haired heroine.” IndieWire’s review from 1999 hailed its “clever, wholly unique narrative concept” which “instantly makes it one of the more original, unpretentious...

Sure, HBO series “The Deuce” may have piqued some interest in the history of classic porn cinema, but now the outrageous true story of Times Square staple Chelly Wilson is getting the spotlight.
Documentary “Queen of the Deuce” centers on Wilson’s personal history before building a porn theater in the notorious Times Square vicinity known as the Deuce. Wilson’s reign ranged from the late ’60s to the mid-’80s as she earned a reputation as one of the savviest and most enigmatic figures on the scene.
Greek-born Wilson escaped the Holocaust in WWII, emigrated to the U.S., and married a slew of men while being openly gay. Her legacy in the world of adult cinema is examined by filmmaker Valerie Kontakos (“Mana”), who has written, directed, and produced the documentary.
“Queen of the Deuce” is further produced by Ed Barreveld and Despina Pavlaki, who also co-wrote the...

Lately, Dakota Johnson has been battling a sea of negative criticism. Ever since the trailer for her critically blasted superhero movie, Madame Web, first debuted, the actress has suffered trolling. A selection at Telluride and TIFF last year, Christy Hall’s directorial debut Daddio follows Dakota Johnson’s character who picks up a cab at the JFK airport on her way home. Driving the cab is Sean Penn’s character and what unfurls is a feature-length conversation on pain, romance, and secrets. Originally conceived as a stage play, the film never quite escapes those trappings to deliver something truly cinematic, but it does provide a decent enough showcase for both actors. Ahead of June 28 release from Sony Classics, the trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with an unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study — encapsulated in one single cab ride — explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. It’s about truth and illusion,...

Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.
Johnson produces alongside TeaTime Pictures partner Ro Donnelly, who told IndieWire that Girlie is emotionally “reflective” of the below-the-line team behind the feature itself.
“Because she is our generation of women who are still approaching these men in a nonjudgmental way because it’s fascinating. We’re not threatened by it,” producer Donnelly said. “And that reveals her power,...

"I just gotta tell ya... you're better off walking away." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the main official trailer for the indie film titled Daddio, marking the feature debut of the newcomer filmmaker Christy Hall. This initially premiered at both the 2023 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals last fall. It's currently set for a release in select theaters starting in late June this summer. The New York City drama is set entirely in a taxi cab departing from JFK airport. A young woman jumps into the backseat of a yellow taxi, the cabbie throws the vehicle into drive as the two head out into the night toward Manhattan, striking up the most unexpected conversation resulting in a single, epic, remarkable journey. Dakota Johnson stars as Girlie, and Sean Penn co-stars as the driver Clark, described as a "curbside philosopher." I'm actually very curious to watch this, to see where their conversation goes...

“Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson needed way more than just 50 days to regroup after the infamously “tough” production.
“Back to Black” helmer Taylor-Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that directing the 2015 romance drama required her to take four years off of work. Taylor-Johnson admitted that she and novelist E.L. James had “diametrically opposed visions” on what the adaptation should be like. The feature was a critical failure but a box-office success, propelling lead stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan further into fame and spurring a trilogy.
“This was her book and she had a very particular vision of how she wanted to see this film,” Taylor-Johnson said of James. “And I had a diametrically opposed vision. Where we got to is where we got to. The success of it was great, but the experience of it was tough.”
Taylor-Johnson added, “It took me about four years to regain my confidence and composure.

Paramount Pictures hosted a ‘Friends & Family’ screening for its new Johnny Knoxville-starrer Sweet Dreams at L.A.’s Laemmle Royal on April 1. Even with a handful of comedians in the building and a date that coincided with April Fool’s Day, the world premiere of filmmaker Lije Sarki’s recovery-centered softball dramedy was no joke.

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Sydney Sweeney recently expanded her filmography by starring in the Sony Marvel feature Madame Web. Although the two properties couldn’t be anymore different, Sweeney was just as nervous talking about Marvel as she was talking about her hit show Euphoria.

Sweeney found herself becoming a household name after starring in the HBO series Euphoria. Fans of the show got to know Sweeney as the troubled teenager Cassie in the ensemble show. The first season debuted in 2019, with its second season being three years afterwards in 2022.
Since then, fans have been anticipating the arrival of a possible third season. Because of a few delays, fans can expect the show to return sometime in 2025, which means another three-year wait between seasons.

Here’s your first look at Christian Bale’s suited-up as Frankenstein’s monster in actress-turned-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal’s take on the classic monster with The Bride, her forthcoming feature at Warner Bros.
Gyllenhaal shared the first look of Bale today on her Instagram, alongside an image of Jessie Buckley as “The Bride.”

Bale and Buckley star in the pic alongside Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film’s logline reads: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.
The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.
The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).
The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a Frankenstein feature set at Netflix with Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery signed on to star.
