Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has been a part of many franchises. The actor played the role of Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s Hannibal, featured in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as Galen Erso, and took over from Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. He even recently joined the Indiana Jones franchise as Dr Jürgen Voller.
However, one of his most memorable roles has been his appearance as Kaecillius in Doctor Strange. The actor played the antagonist in the film which starred Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular. Mikkelsen was reportedly convinced by filmmaker Scott Derrickson to join the film without even reading the script with three magical words.

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

Jersey Shore made celebrities out of all of its cast. But an original Jersey Shore cast member, Angelina Pivarnick, was nowhere to be found after the first couple of seasons of the hit reality series. Back at an earlier time, Pivarnick felt she was the one being mistreated and shunned by her co-stars.

Pivarnick was once the long-lost cast member of the Jersey Shore family. Earlier on in the series, Pivarnick shared the same living space as Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and the rest of the family. But Pivarnick was portrayed as perhaps the most volatile of the bunch.
She was shown getting into arguments with her cast that were heated even by Jersey Shore standards. This soon culminated in Pivarnick leaving the show.

The tale begins with a crime that left everyone baffled. In July 1976, a school bus carrying 26 children (and one driver) was hijacked in the sleepy Central California town of Chowchilla. The kidnap victims were taken to two vans, driven to an abandoned rock quarry, led off the bus, and essentially buried alive in an underground compartment full of mattresses. Things like that just didn’t happen in a town like this.
Seventies California was loaded with bad juju, from the Zodiac Killer to the Patty Hearst kidnapping to Jim Jones.

Last year, Bad Bunny's "Un Verano Sin Ti" became the first non-English language album to top the Billboard 200. The Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaetonero also became the most streamed artist on Spotify for the third consecutive year. Latin music revenue exceeded $1 billion for the first time last year, allowing reggaetón, música Mexicana, and other Latin music genres to reach global success. By any and all metrics, Latin music has officially taken over. But the origins of these genres remain up for debate, particularly when it comes to urbano music and its connections to American hip-hop.
"De La Calle," a new docuseries on Paramount+, explores that and more. For over a decade, award-winning journalist Nick Barili - who was born in Argentina but grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area - has wanted to create a documentary that tells a broader story of Latin music, its rich diversity, its connection to American rap music,...

In the early days of the culture war, science stood on one side and religion on the other. In 1925, the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial hung on whether a Tennessee high-school instructor had violated state law by teaching human evolution. He was on trial, but it was really Charles Darwin who was on trial. Darwin won, and so, in a larger sense, did Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, and the whole tsunami of advanced science that was setting the stage for the 20th century. By the time physicists and astronomers were exploring the origins of the universe, the whole “God made the world in 7 days” idea, even if you fervently believed it, did not pretend to be “science.”
But with the rise of the American Evangelical movement and its worldly political engine, the Christian Right, what once looked like a science-vs.-faith dichotomy began to break down. You could see this in...

The Love & Hip Hop franchise has become an enduring staple for the hip-hop community in America, a cultural movement that has spread across the globe. The VH1 franchise of shows consisting of several reality television series, spinoffs, and specials revolves around the lives and relationships of hip-hop artists. Its history dates back to 2006 when American rapper and record executive Jim Jones lobbied VH1’s executives to create a reality show about him. Original titled Keeping Up with the Joneses, and then Diary of a Hip Hop Girlfriend, the show eventually premiered as Love & Hip Hop in March 2011.

There was a cipher going on outside the Hip-Hop 50 Live show at Yankee Stadium. One woman took the mic, intently closing her eyes while focusing on her next bar. As I walked away, she rhymed an improvisational derivative of recuperate, before spitting “that’s not even a word, I just be sayin’ shit.” The line set an apropos tone for the day. Hip-hop was bore out of rule-shirking and boundless imagination — and it made its way to “the house that Ruth built” to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The final episode of How To Become A Cult Leader is about bringing to the table all the playbook rules and merging them into one singular cult leader who managed to follow all of them and was successful in executing them. His execution worked in his favor for years later; his legacy still sustains him, and the man is considered a spiritual leader of the highest order.
Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church, ran the organization for sixty years without any hitch or scandal rocking the organization to its core. The followers of the Unification Church, also known as Moonies, remain an influential religious group long after the death of their leader. The group was functioning in such a manner that people from the outside had no reason to doubt their intentions, even though there was corruption that was not brought to the forefront.

The fifth episode, unlike the last four, is more about how a cult leader can cultivate a positive image of themselves among their followers. The leader tries too hard to build such an image because that is the only way to remain in power and relevant. How to Become a Cult Leader now discusses Shoko Asahara, the man who led the deadly cult of Aum Shinrikyo. Why did we call it deadly? Read to the end of the article to understand how the man went from a cult leader to someone willing to do anything to keep his image alive.

The ongoing actors and writers strikes have caused the TV academy to postpone the Primetime Emmy Awards from September. Speculation about a new date is just that. While there are rumors of rescheduling in either November or January, nothing can be firmed up until the two guilds reach an agreement with the powers-that-be. To date, there have not been any negotiations between the parties. The WGA walked on May 2 while SAG-AFTRA hit the picket lines on July 14 (two days after the Emmy nominations were announced).
The primetime ceremony had been set to take place on September 18 and air live coast-to-coast on Fox. The Creative Arts section of the Emmys were to be handed out at two non-televised events on September 9 and 10. Despite the uncertainty about new dates for these awardsfests, the final round of Emmy voting will still kick off on August 17. This second phase of the process will run for 12 days until Aug.

How to Become a Cult Leader has so far discussed building a foundation, gathering a large group, and how to control their minds. Viewers have been given three cult leaders as examples of those who master the above-mentioned aspects, but somewhere they lost grip on them and fell flat. The fourth episode brings to light another aspect of the cult leaders, which is making promises of another kind that convince the members to stay with the group till salvation is achieved.
Marshall Applewhite, aka Do, and his partner Bonnie Lu Nettles, aka It, were instrumental in forming Heaven’s Gate, a cult that was a mixture of science fiction, Christianity, and new-age mysticism, where the group leaders initially promised eternity to followers who joined the group. The group managed to convince a good number of people that they were aliens from the Next Level and were not humans. They are destined...

In the second episode of this installment of the How to Become series, the cult leaders’ tropes are discussed in detail. The second episode was about Jim Jones and how he converted his flock from mere three digits to five in a few years but ended up paying the price with his life. He killed himself and convinced his entire commune at Jonestown, Guyana, to do the same. How to Become a Cult Leader Episode 3 focuses on how the cult leader Jaime Gomez of Buddhafield managed to form a commune, claiming he would provide high consciousness and enlightenment to those who joined his group.
At one point, Jaime Gomez was so popular that many stars, models, and dancers joined his cult in the hope of achieving the same thing he promised. The only way to achieve this was to live the life of a celibate during their stay with Buddhafield.

The first episode of How to Become a Cult Leader trudged through the topic of building the foundation of the cult. Cementing the basic idea into people’s minds and working hard enough to make sure people stick to it so that they follow without questioning your intentions. The second episode is not just about building the foundation but increasing the members of your group. A cult leader will want more people to follow him because making them believe in his truth is the ultimate goal. More followers lead to a powerful leader. This is where Reverend Jim Jones comes into the picture. The man behind People’s Temple was known for bringing thousands of his devotees under his wing and making them believe in apostolic socialism, something that capitalist America is dead against. This constant brainwashing about an apocalypse coming their way led to a tragedy of a monumental scale.

Two years ago, Netflix began the How to Become family of satirical documentary series, which became hugely popular. The first of the many in the line was released in the year 2021 and was titled How to Become a Tyrant. The satirical humor laced documentary series helped people understand what was not right with the tyrants who ruled their countries with absolute power. The second installment of this Netflix Original documentary series is How to Become a Cult Leader, you can guess what the content of the show will be and who it is going to be about.
How to Become a Tyrant takes no time to jump into the nitty gritty of what happens behind the closed doors of so-called ‘cult leaders.’ The documentary covers in detail world-famous gurus, hypnotists, pastors, yoga teachers, and preachers, and each episode of the show is dedicated to one leader who ran a commune...

The Emmys have been here before. In 1980, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike for three months. That year’s Emmy telecast happened to fall right in the middle of it.

Famously, only one out of 52 nominees attended: Powers Boothe, who said when accepting his trophy for playing cult leader Jim Jones: “This is either the most courageous moment of my career or the stupidest.”

He also shared that he can’t even remember what a McDonald’s meal smells like, reports Female First UK.
In a chat with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, the musician explained: “When I was 19, I moved to Miami and my mom is a chef and she was very happy for the move because New Orleans is crazy. One thing she really wanted me to do was get a personal chef.”

Moody blue lights drench the audience at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. We’re in Drake’s bedroom. Or some version of it, at least. The musician born Aubrey Graham is seated on the edge of a neatly made bed, and a dim tulip-shaped lamp stands in the corner of the stage, designed as a replica of the teenage bedroom where he wrote his first songs. His outfit of baggy jeans and a yellow-and-blue basketball jersey complete the tableau. Number eleven, Degrassi High.

Marrakech – Director Sally El Hosaini, whose Working Title-produced “The Swimmers” opened the Toronto Film Festival, is turning her attention to one of the biggest mass murder-suicide stories in history with her forthcoming project “Jones.”
The Welsh-Egyptian director, who recently signed with CAA, told Variety at the Marrakech Film Festival that she began working on the film before making her current feature, “The Swimmers,” but is now rebooting the project towards production. “The Swimmers” is playing at the Marrakech International Film Festival this week.
El Hosaini is casting new light on the story which, she said, has been misunderstood. She has acquired the life rights from Jim Jones’ surviving son, Stephan Jones, she said.
“It’s a very misunderstood chapter in American history,” she says. “People label Jim Jones as a Charles Manson type of character from that era, but if the history had stopped in 1976/7, at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The power of sound and the impacts of war dominated the 26th Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival awards, with French doc “07:15 – Blackbird” taking home both the main prize and the cinematography award.
The story of a young girl’s quest to identify the call of a mysterious bird, directed by Judith Auffray and filmed by Mario Valero, the 30-minute doc’s “fairy-tale poeticism,” balancing natural wonder and technology, won over the Opus Bonum jury. The jury said the film “draws us back to the mysteries of our existence.”
The closing gala, after the fest’s focus on war films and a strong presence of Ukrainian filmmakers and their work, paused to honor the fallen in Ukraine as a choir took the stage to sing a traditional hymn, “The Duckling Swims.”

Evan Peters has been in more seasons of FX’s “American Horror Story” than any other male actor, appearing in all of them except for Season 9, “AHS: 1984,” and the upcoming Season 11, “AHS: New York City.” (Sarah Paulson matches his track record for female actors.) Soon after winning an Emmy in 2021 for HBO’s “Mare of Easttown,” Peters returned to “AHS” during the long-awaited pandemic-delayed Season 10, “Double Feature: Red Tide.” Over the past decade, nearly all of his characters have stuck with viewers (we’re going to pretend Jeff Pfister didn’t exist).

“Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial” sounds like the tawdriest of TV-movies, with any vestige of shame left on the cutting-room floor. It definitely is that, yet it’s worth noting that this exact sort thing has been around for decades. It just didn’t used to come off the assembly line quite so quickly. In the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, the landscape was littered with made-for-tv movies that jumped on tabloid-ready stories — The Jacksons! Jim Jones! The Menendez brothers! The Beverly Hills madam! The rape of Richard Beck! — and squeezed out whatever juice was left in them. “Hot Take” isn’t much different. It feeds on our collective desire, which is apparently limitless, to see adequate-but-not-never-good-enough actors acting out the infamous scenes we’ve read or heard about, bringing those squalid episodes to life. Except that the whole problem with this form is that the dramatized version rarely ends...

Leonardo DiCaprio’s eternal youth and boyish looks may have helped his timeless stardom in Hollywood, but it only hurt his chances of starring in a James Dean biopic.
Director Michael Mann revealed he scrapped a “brilliant screenplay” about late “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Dean due to his dream lead, DiCaprio, looking too young for the part.
“That was so weird about James Dean,” Mann told Deadline. “It’s, ‘Who the hell could play James Dean?’ And I found a chap who could play James Dean, but he was too young. It was Leo. We did a screen test that’s quite amazing. I think he must’ve been 19 at the time.”
Screen legend Dean died at age 24 after a car accident in 1955 after starring in three major films.

Not just from a creative standpoint, though Full Court Press — a collaborative album with Wiz Khalifa, Smoke Dza, and Big K.R.I.T. out April 8 via Asylum/Taylor Gang — is a marked departure from the producer/DJ’s wildly popular mashup albums. No, the challenge Full Court Press presented was a hurdle that none of those years of mashups prepared him for: clearing samples.
