A contemporary love story that plays with the ancient mythology of the country itself, Iceland begins with a seemingly chance encounter between Vala, a disillusioned architect in search of answers, and Mundi, a dispirited wilderness guide mentally scarred by a climbing accident some years before. The heroine and hero embark on separate journeys across the physical and emotional terrain of a glacier, which catapults them into the realm of The Hiddenfolk and the Mythic Beasts. Through Vala and Mundi’s opposing trajectories and eventual union, Iceland explores – using movement, music, and design – how longing, courage, and...

Many gangland parodies fall flat, but not Jonathan Demme’s marvelous combo of high spirits and murder. Mafia spouse Angela de Marco’s story is goofy comedy with an edge of economic reality: how does one newly-impoverished New Yawk dame make a living for her orphaned son, while avoiding the adulterous attentions of the Big Boss who had her husband iced? Michelle Pfeiffer came into her own, Dean Stockwell has his best adult role and Matthew Modine is uniquely charming as an amorous FBI agent. The tonal balance is abetted by a supporting performances that go every which way: Mercedes Ruehl, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt and a slew of Demme regulars. Plus a music score by David Byrne. The disc features three new video interviews.

"There is something far worse than being forgotten... and that is to be misunderstood." That's a powerfully true statement. Is it possible to connect with and understand different people through music? That's sort of the premise behind this stop-motion animated short film titled Charlotte, created & directed by filmmaker Zach Dorn. After first premiering at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last fall, it's now available to watch online below. Forgotten folk singer Lena Black discovers that her fifty-year-old song "Charlotte" has been remade into a hit pop song. Set in the aftermath of the release and the new pop song's massive success, this short explores how the legacy of the song impacts Lena and her family. The film stars the voices of O-Lan Jones (as Lena), Devin Schlatter, Chase Padgett, Phoebe Jane Hart, and Michael Goldfried. This is a much more contemplative film than you might be expecting, focusing more on the words being spoken.

Every single one of us knows the terror of the unknown. Maybe it’s as universal as our collective uncertainty about the future or as specific as your inability to guess whether an abusive family member is going to fall asleep before taking off their belt. Some wonder if the randomness of the world will strike them down without warning or if a broken system of prejudice will collect them for no other reason than the color of their skin. We battle mental illness, post-traumatic stress, bigotry, poverty, and the weight of an inescapable hopelessness that we’re simply not strong enough or compassionate enough to fight together. And so many of us find ourselves alone and drifting, lost in the dark thoughts that will ultimately become our demise.
It’s where we find Mary (April Matthis) and John (Robbie Tann) at the beginning of director Jason Neulander and co-writer...

One thing the new mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein” does quite well is prove that there are perks to appearing on a streaming service’s signature hit.
David Harbour, the stolid and familiar presence from Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” is given the opportunity to cut loose here with a broad, loopy half-hour that feels a bit like one long comedy sketch, with all that implies. He’s evidently having a great deal of fun playing his fictional late father, a pompous theater actor who acted in his own play about Dr. Frankenstein and recorded the piece for posterity. But even half an hour is a generous amount of time to give to a story that feels, well, sketchy, with reversals whose pile-up is more novel than truly funny and with jokes that feel underwritten at best.
Harbour also plays himself in the present day, working to uncover more...

Sam Shepard died at age 73 this week, and in addition to an incredible Hollywood legacy, the actor also left behind his three children: Jesse, 47, from his marriage to O-Lan Jones; and Hannah, 31, and Samuel, 30, from his longtime relationship with Jessica Lange. While Jessica and Sam never got married, their romance was one of Hollywood's longest-lasting love stories. The pair first met on the set of Frances in 1982 and started dating shortly after. They went on to have two children before splitting in 2009. Even after they parted ways, they weren't shy about opening up to the media. In 2010, Sam talked about their "tumultuous" relationship, and Jessica mentioned her ex during an interview with Aarp magazine shortly before his death. This week's wedding-themed episode of Community is so near the knuckle, it could only be made on the internet...
This review contains spoilers.
6.12 Wedding Videography
“Britta, tonight every one of us is the worst. Take a night off.”
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today for a sitcom wedding. But one week after another paintball episode, Community gives us Wedding Videography, an episode that is way closer to Game Of Thrones than Friends. In short, the kind of episode so ballsy and leftfield, you could only make it on the internet.
In the same style as the previous Documentary Filmmaking episodes of seasons two, three and four, Abed is strictly behind the camera this week. Fellow student and oft-mocked “human spillage” Garrett (Eric Charles Nielsen) wants Abed to film his marriage proposal to Stacy, (Harmontown's Erin McGathy.) his Law classmate and girlfriend of the past 16 months, four weeks and two days.

Maybe "Tweedle Dee!" should be the new "Squeeeee!" for excited exclamations. You've probably seen the new images via USA Today and the info on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland? But I'd like to talk about the cast and the polish. One of the only pluses of mainstays like 'Wonderland' being retold each decade over original work is to see how the different eras and visual artists interpret them.
