‘Unforgotten’ Season 5 Finds Sunny ‘Extremely Lost’ After Cassie’s Death, Says Actor Sanjeev Bhaskar
British mystery series “Unforgotten” returns to PBS on Sept. 3 for its fifth season — but minus longtime co-lead Nicola Walker, whose character, Dci Cassie Stuart, was tragically killed off at the end of Season 4.
Her partner Sunil “Sunny” Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) is still grieving her loss when he’s saddled with a new boss, Dci Jesse James (Sinéad Keenan of “Being Human”), to whom he immediately takes an intense dislike — as does his team.
Longtime fans might also resent the new character who’s taken Cassie’s place. Both Bhaskar and Keenan spoke with TheWrap ahead of the Season 5 premiere about where we find Sunny and Jesse.
TheWrap: How was it coming into a show that’s already established and knowing that not only the characters, but even fans might be hostile?
Sinéad Keenan: To be honest, when the producers wanted to meet with me, I thought, “I’m not going...

The long shadow of memory haunts the suspects in every season of Unforgotten, a first-rate Masterpiece cold-case mystery series. Each unearthed crime generates ripples of consequence, shattering lives as the truth comes into the light. But in Season 5, it’s the more recent accidental death of original lead detective Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) that has everyone spiraling — especially her former partner Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar). Sunny’s sustained grief, revisited nine months after last season’s tragic climax, creates tension at work and on the home front, where his fiancée Sally (Michelle Bonnard) can’t help but complain, “It’s hard to feel jealous of a dead woman, but I do.” And that’s nothing compared to the chill that instantly sets in at the precinct when Cassie’s replacement is introduced: the brusque Jessica “Jessie” James (Sinéad Keenan), who makes no friends when she keeps messing up the names...

Fans won’t be instantly smitten with Unforgotten’s new detective chief inspector, and that’s fine with Chris Lang, the creator and writer of the engrossing British cold-case drama, returning for Season 5 on Sunday, September 3, on PBS. He anticipated it would take time for viewers to warm up to Jessica James (Sinéad Keenan), who replaces Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart in the Masterpiece series’ fifth season following the beloved character’s death. Lang’s solution: to have her still-grieving colleagues, led by Detective Inspector Sunny Khan, also struggle to forge a connection with their boss, even though nine months have passed since Cassie died. “I knew the audience would come to it feeling a huge sense of loss and probably some resentment,” Lang says. “So I wanted to dive straight in to a man who’s still wrestling with grief and loss, which is impacting his professional life and...

Unforgotten creator Chris Lang has made a request to fans of the ITV drama.
The series returned for a fifth run last week for its first series without former star Nicola Walker.
Sanjeev Bhaskar returns as Di Sunny Khan in the episodes alongside new cast addition Sinead Keenan, who plays Dci Jess James.
Unlike other British dramas, including BBC series Happy Valley, the entirety of the new series has been made available to view on its channel’s dedicated viewing platform.
However, while Lang isn’t exactly requesting people to swerve watching all episodes at once, he has stepped in to ask that these viewers keep the show’s surprises a secret from those who want to wait.
“Thx so much for all your lovely comments about #Unforgotten !” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday (1 March).

Warning: This Series 5 Review Is Spoiler-free But Contains A major Series 4 spoiler.
With its ‘decomposing murder victims dug up decades later’ premise, Unforgotten has never been a cosy crime drama. Alongside some extremely grim-looking corpses, past series have excavated painful topics, from racism to childhood sexual abuse, alcoholism, psychopathy and dementia.
Series 5, a story about addiction and violence that opens with the discovery of a human leg theorised to have been chewed off by rats, is no different. What is different this time around is that a crucial ingredient is missing: relief from the bleakness.
In the past, the grimness of Unforgotten’s cases was balanced out by the reassuring and easy camaraderie of the show’s two leads, played by Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

British television is brutal. The job security of actors, even in leading roles, is perilous. From the urtext, Spooks, where everyone from Keeley Hawes to Matthew Macfadyen cut their teeth, through to ITV’s returning Monday night drama, Unforgotten, writers have always been willing to throw their characters under the bus (sometimes literally). The challenge, then, is reacclimating audiences, once the dust settles, to a very different version of the same old show.
Back for its fifth season, Unforgotten is still reeling from the death of Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart. Di Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) is grieving, while incoming Dci Jessie James (Sinéad Keenan) is met by a rather cold shoulder. She doesn’t help herself: at home, her family life is falling apart, and the new gig couldn’t come at a worse time. Both she and Sunny are thinking of chucking it all in: Sunny is interrupted...

Warning: contains spoilers for Series 4 of Unforgotten
It’s been two years since the last season of ITV’s hit crime drama Unforgotten, and at long last it’s back on our screens.
After that shocking Series 4 finale, in which we said a heartbreaking goodbye to Dci Cassie Stuart (aka the incredible Nicola Walker), we’ve got plenty of questions about the Series 5 cast.
In this latest series, when a body is found in a boarded-up fireplace, the team gets to work trying to identify who the victim is, and how long they’ve been there. We also discover that the person filling Cassie’s very large detective shoes as Sunny’s new boss-slash-bestie will be the prickly Dci Jessica James, who doesn’t exactly make a great first impression.
Unlike the previous four series, Series 5 of Unforgotten will also be made available as a bingeable box-set on Itvx as...

Warning: contains major spoilers for Unforgotten Series 4.
Two years on, we’re still not over Nicola Walker’s shock departure from Unforgotten.
When Walker’s character Dci Cassie Stuart – the ITV crime drama’s much-loved lead detective – was involved in a car crash in the penultimate episode of Series Four in 2021, she was expected to miraculously pull through… and then didn’t. The brain injuries Cassie sustained in the side-on smash with a speeding car thief were too severe for her to recover from.
Fans watched in shock as Cassie’s family received the news in hospital, and colleague Di Sunny Khan ended the series by placing flowers on her grave, accompanied by a touching monologue. “She longest lives, who most to others gives, herself forgetting” read the inscription on the headstone.
Khan wasn’t the only one in mourning, Unforgotten’s fans also grieved the shock loss of the character.

Since that finale, Unforgotten star Sanjeev Bhaskar has been bombarded with questions. “A lot of people on Twitter were saying to me, ‘Why did she have to die?’, ‘Why couldn’t she have just retired and lived with her boyfriend?’” He is talking, of course, about Dci Cassie Stuart – his indomitable sidekick in the cop drama, played by Nicola Walker, who was killed off in the fourth season’s final episode.
The pair were a detective duo with a special spark, the beating heart of the show since it first aired on ITV in 2015. For many, the idea of the series without Cassie and Bhaskar’s Di Sunil “Sunny” Khan is unthinkable. The shock twist left fans in tears – she never recovered from a car accident. But now the hit police procedural returns for a fifth series, and Sunny has – sniff – a brand new partner. How did Bhaskar take the...

“Quantico” star Tracy Ifeachor, “Star Trek: Discovery’s” James Frain (left) and “Rocks” actor Sharon D. Clarke are set to star in BBC drama “Showtrial” from “Bodyguard” producer World Productions.
The five-part series, which will air on flagship channel BBC One, is now in production. Ben Richards (“The Tunnel”) writes, while Zara Hayes (“Poms”) directs.
Ifeachor, Frain and Clarke have been cast alongside Sinéad Keenan (“Little Boy Blue”), Celine Buckens (“Bridgerton”), Kerr Logan (“Strike”) and Lolita Chakrabarti (“Vigil”).
Filmed and set around Bristol, “Showtrial” explores how prejudice, politics and the media distort the legal process. The show centers on Talitha Campbell, the estranged daughter of a wealthy property developer, who is charged with conspiring to murder fellow university student Hannah Ellis.
The trial that follows places victim and accused — and their families — in the eye of a media storm. Into that storm enters Cleo Roberts, the duty solicitor on the night of Talitha’s arrest.

Netflix shows “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” each landed three nominations Wednesday for BAFTA Television Awards, as did BBC dramas “Line of Duty” and “Three Girls.”
Royal chronicle “The Crown” received nominations for best drama; for Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, as leading actress; and for Vanessa Kirby, who plays Princess Margaret, as best supporting actress. “Black Mirror,” the dark, dystopian anthology series, also bagged nominations in the leading actor, single drama, and supporting actor categories.
Police drama “Line of Duty’s” trio of nominations included one for drama series and one for lead actress Thandie Newton. “Three Girls,” about sexual abuse in a community in northern England, will compete for the best miniseries award.
The nominations were unveiled Wednesday morning at BAFTA’s Piccadilly headquarters in London, with Michelle Keegan and presenter and “Strictly Come Dancing Winner” Ore Oduba making the announcements.

Did you spot the photo of Amy Poehler in Liz Lemon’s 30 Rock office? Or the Han Solo model in Firefly?
Surrounding your workspace with more clutter than a mid-noughties Myspace page is one way to assert individualism inside a bland corporate identity. It tells the world, ‘I’m not a number, I’m a free man! A free man overly fond of Pikachu!’ It can also be an act of mild rebellion, akin to leaving out the short and skinny bit of your school tie instead of the long, fat bit of your school tie that the man wants to see.
And then there’s sentimental desk décor, the talismans from loved ones from which you draw daily strength, reminding you why you shackled yourself to the capitalist cart horse in the first place. These are the photos, drawings and poorly made pottery items that prove you exist outside of work,...

It's the end of the road for the original Being Human TV show. BBC Three has announced that the fifth (current) season of the show will be the end.
Being Human began in 2008 and initially revolved around a ghost (Lenora Crichlow), a werewolf (Russell Tovey) and a vampire (Aidan Turner) who live together and try to live as normal a life as possible. Later castmembers have included Sinead Keenan, Michael Socha, and Damien Molony.
Regarding the cancellation, executive producer Rob Pursey wrote:
"Working on Being Human has been a truly great experience. From the first one-hour pilot, all the way through to this climactic series, we've been given real creative freedom and encouragement.
It's a credit to BBC Three that such an unusual idea has been allowed to flourish and evolve in its own unique way. I'd...

Joe Utichi contributes to Deadline’s UK coverage. The current series of BBC Three hit Being Human, about a trio of supernatural roommates, will be its last. The characters will face the Devil himself in the program’s “apocalyptic end”, the BBC said. The show, which started airing its fifth series February 3, was created by Toby Whithouse and began life as a stand-alone pilot starring Andrea Riseborough, Russell Tovey and Guy Flanagan. Only Tovey carried over to the series, which has featured revolving main players like Lenora Crichlow, Aidan Turner and Sinead Keenan. Season 5′s cast of Michael Socha, Damien Molony, Kate Bracken and Steven Robertson will see the show out. A U.S. adaptation is currently airing an all-new third season on Syfy; the original has been a hit on BBC America since debuting in 2009.

BBC's Being Human has gone through some big casting changes with two of the three of the stars departing. Star John Mitchell left after season three and star Russell Tovey became a recurring guest until he was written out in season four. In addition, Sinead Keenan quit her role as werewolf Nina.
In year four, Lenora Crichlow's ghostly Annie has been joined by vampire Hal Yorke (Damien Molony) and previously-recurring werewolf Tom McNair (Michael Socha). Of the cast changes, Being Human creator and executive producer Toby Whithouse tells EW, "It's always very sad when we lose characters... But it's never terminal. To use our own mythology: As one door closes, another door opens."

'Being Human' Q&A: Michael Socha, Lenora Crichlow, and Damien Molony bite into season 4 -- Exclusive
No one was singing “Ding-dong Mitchell’s dead” at the end of Being Human’s third season, when the complicated Irish vamp was killed off so that actor Aidan Turner could depart the show for New Zealand and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Chicago – Rarely has a show blown itself up more than the great BBC America supernatural program “Being Human” does in its first two episodes of its fourth season. Imagine if Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder just up and left “The Vampire Diaries.” And then imagine that the program survived such a loss but arguably got More interesting. Such is the stunning case of “Being Human“‘s fourth season, a show that appears to have hit reboot on its own program and survived the crash.

Being Human (UK)
No-one is entirely sure what the fourth season of the original UK "Being Human" is going to be like with the departures of all but one of the main cast members.
Spoilers Ahead
Following on from the demise of the vampire Mitchell (Aidan Turner) in last season's finale, new promo photos for the series confirm that the werewolves George (Russell Tovey) and Nina (Sinead Keenan) are also gone. According to the British press Nina isn't expected to make an appearance onscreen at all while George will only pop up briefly.
Instead ghostly Annie (Lenora Crichlow) will be joined by last year's recurring werewolf Tom (Michael Socha) and newcomer vampire Hal (Damien Moloney). It essentially looks as if the show is going back to its roots, but will the new configuration work? [Source: Den of Geek]

I don’t know about all of you, but the season 3 finale of the UK version of Being Human on BBC America last spring was a total shocker for me. I did try to avoid spoilers, and was rewarded, but everyone had kept pretty quiet about it, so it wasn’t that hard. My, how things have changed.

There we were, enjoying our Saturday morning coffee and catching up with Twitter, when we saw a tweet from Russell Tovey, one of the stars of the UK version of "Being Human", saying that he's leaving the show. The North American version of Being Human is surprisingly not 'pants'.
The video streaming service Netflix has acquired the rights to the UK and Us versions of the fantasy-horror-comedy-drama Being Human, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Being Human originated in Britain on BBC Three but was later picked up for a North American makeover on Syfy in the Us and Space in Canada. The Netflix deal is for both markets, where the original and adapted versions of the show have been a hit for their broadcasters.
The British version of Being Human was originally set in Bristol but later moved to Wales. It first aired in 2008 and has so far had three seasons, with a fourth expected next year. The cast in those first three years included Lenora Crichlow, Russell Tovey, Aidan Turner and Sinead Keenan.

What I find most stunning about Why Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' May Save the Music Industry isn’t the staggering amount of money that’s
generated around Mother Monster. It’s that at the top of the article there’s a picture of Lady Gaga surrounded by brand logos she works with – Polaroid, Estee Lauder, Spring, Virgin Mobile, and… a rainbow flag. Gay is a brand now?
A high school sophomore who challenged Tea Party favorite Michelle Bachman to a debate on the Constitution has been getting death threats for her trouble. Some of those “real Americans” are even threatening to rape her.
Should we be boycotting straight weddings on principle, even for our oldest friends? Probably not unless we don’t want to have any friends. But we can definitely shop at the low end of the registry.

Chicago – It’s not often that a program in the U.K. is being produced and airing on BBC America at the same time as an American remake version of the same concept. But it’s not often that you have a hook as strong as the one on “Being Human” — the remake airs on SyFy and the third season of the original was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD by BBC America and Warner Bros.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
On paper, “Being Human” probably sounds ridiculous. But so did “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Lost.” And, yes, at its best, this show deserves comparisons with those modern classics. It sounds like the set-up for a bad joke — a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost move into a flat. Trust me. It’s not joke. This is intense, smart, well-acted, great stuff with some of the best writing in genre television of the last few years.

Everett Collection Winona Ryder and Vince Vaughn in “The Dilemma”
With a weekend haul of more than $86 million, “Fast Five” kicked off the summer movie season with quite a start, and things show no signs of slowing down with imminent blockbusters like “Thor” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” coming in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, the same can’t quite be said with the studios’ home video output, which is dominated by lower-profile titles and cult fare,...

The BBC adult drama Being Human has always had a strong premise – a werewolf, vampire, and ghost – living together and trying to maintain some semblance of a normal existence. A world filled with such creatures, though, is far from normal and their attempts have consequences. The series’ first season was quite strong, enough so that SyFy bought the premise and produced their own seriously watered-down version of the show (which has also done well enough for a second season).
The show felt a bit lost during its second season, but it built up its audience so the series got an eight-episode third season order. Today, the DVD release allows audiences in America to catch up with Mitchell (Aidan Turner), George (Russell Tovey) and Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and you will be in very good company indeed.
As the second season ended, Mitchell went on a vampiric bender, massacring a subway full of people.

Though openly-gay Newsweek journalist Ramin Setoodeh’s infamous 2010 article “Straight Jacket” was certainly a misguided piece of criticism, it unfortunately brought to light an all-too-common misconception held by both Hollywood decision makers and members of the public at large – that gay actors are incapable of adequately portraying straight characters on-screen.
History, of course, shows that ludicrous assertion to be entirely false – particularly considering the number of closeted gay actors from earlier eras who vaulted to stardom specifically because they were able to convincingly portray straight romantic leads.
Of course, those were much more intolerant times – times in which actors were continuously pressured to hide their sexuality for fear they’d be rejected if the truth came out (a sadly valid point in those days). Now, however – while we still have a long way to go – there’s an emerging crop of openly-gay actors who are proving it’s possible to...
