Forget the Batman vs Superman movie everyone's talking about. What would happen if you threw Rocky Balboa and Raging Bull's Jake Lamotta into the boxing ring to duke it out? That's the tantalising idea at the heart of Peter Segal's comedy Grudge Match, which sees Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro play veteran fighters who strap on their gloves to settle a 30-year rivalry once and for all.
Stallone plays Henry "Razor" Sharp, a shipyard worker who retired from the sport before a proposed rematch with De Niro's Billy "The Kid" McDonnen. Director Segal relays this in the opening moments with a mixture of archive footage and CGI recreations of the two acting icons in their prime. What should be an...

Grudge Match stars Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone put up their firsts while attending the film’s premiere in Rome, Italy on Tuesday.
'Grudge Match' Rome Premiere
Stallone arrived at the event in a slim-fitting dark gray suit and tie, with a burgundy shirt. His costar De Niro, appearing a bit more casual, donned gray suit pants with a navy blazer and accessorized with a newsboy cap. Posing in a ring on the red carpet, the duo faux-boxed against one another.
By casting Stallone and De Niro in the main roles in the aging boxer flick, Grudge Match forces comparisons to the actors’ earlier roles – Stallone as Rocky Balboa and De Niro as Jake La Motta in Raging Bull. In Grudge Match, the two play rival boxers Henry “Razor” Sharp (Stallone) and Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (De Niro).

Chicago – Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro – between them they have over 150 film credits in careers stretching back to the 1960s. Two of their most famous roles, boxers Rocky and the Raging Bull, get the full make-fun-of treatment in the Christmas Day Film “Grudge Match.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There are decent laughs in this film – with a bit of scene stealing from the hot comic Kevin Hart – but the film doesn’t reach the contender potential it could have had because Sly Stallone wouldn’t go too far in lacerating his iconic boxing image. However, the film is fun enough and epic enough – the climatic fight scene is given proper gravitas and reverence – to make it a good choice for, as they say, the whole family. Stallone and De Niro are comfortable enough to have a good time, and trained enough as boxers to make it plausible. It’s a film that...

In the wake of the surprisingly enjoyable Last Vegas comes another movie that reunites older stars in a piece of escapist fluff. Whether or not moviegoers are eager to see Rocky and Raging Bull square off onscreen is another matter. On the plus side, both Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone bring conviction to a silly script (by Tim Kelleher and Rodney Rothman) and play it for all it’s worth. On the minus side, it’s not worth a heck of a lot.The premise is pretty simple: once upon a time in Pittsburgh, Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (De Niro) and Henry “Razor” Sharp (Stallone) were headlocked in a furious rivalry, in and out of the ring. Just before a decisive bout, Sharp walked away...

Trudge Match: Peter Segal, Cashing Checks
At the end of the day, Peter Segal’s latest directorial effort, Grudge Match, may not be the felonious stink bomb as all signs would seem to indicate, but it most certainly is one jaundiced miasma of rote clichés, segmented together with robotic certainty. On the bright side, rather than formulate another Rocky entry or terrorize us with Raging Bull deux, screenwriters Rodney Rothman and Tim Kelleher at least attempt a new amalgamation of pop culture kitsch with its union of Stallone and De Niro. But with the lead performers’ own dubious reputations for sub-par material working against them, along with a narrative that’s either sputtering along on autopilot or asleep at the wheel, the result is a lackluster gimmick, an instantly forgettable malaise cashing in on preceding run-of-the-mill sports folklore.

This is the second "old guys doing young guy stuff" that Robert DeNiro has starred in this year, and it is by far the weirder of the two. That may be because it feels like a studio movie caught somewhere between two very different schools of comedy. The script is credited to Tim Kelleher and Rodney Rothman, which could account for the split-personality of the film. Kelleher is the writer of "First Kid," credited as a staff writer on "The Arsenio Hall Show" and "The Pat Sajak Show," while Rothman is a frequent collaborator of Nick Stoller's, one of the major...

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro go head to head for the first time in over a decade, reuniting for a little action in the boxing comedy, Grudge Match.
Following on from yesterday’s new look at De Niro’s character, we’ve got another exclusive character piece to share, this time centred on Stallone’s Henry “Razor” Sharp.
In “Grudge Match,” De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to re-enter...

Warner Bros. has revealed the first trailer for Grudge Match comedy, starring big screen legends and fictional boxing icons, Rocky’s Sylvester Stallone and Raging Bull’s Robert De Niro. In other words, Rocky Balboa fights Jack Lamotta in this December’s Grudge Match as two retired professional boxers who used to be boxers. Seeing these two together could be worth it with a Rocky gag and plenty of ‘you’re so old that ___’ jokes along with a creepy CGI’d version of Stallone’s younger self retiring from acting. Peter Segel (Get Smart) directs the film originally written by Tim Kelleher, with rewrites by Doug Ellin among others. Kevin...

Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone played arguably the two most iconic boxers in the film history. The former won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Jake Lamotta in Martin Scorsese's 1980 classic Raging Bull, while the latter was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay making Rocky back in 1976 (not to mention all of the subsequent sequels). Only now, however, are the two stars ready to step into the ring together, as seen in the newly released trailer for Grudge Match. Directed by Peter Segal and based on a script by Tim Kelleher, Doug Ellin and Rodney Rothman, the film tells the story of Henry 'Razor' Sharp (Stallone) and Billy 'The Kid' McDonnen (De Niro), two pugilists who struck up a prime rivalry back in the heyday of their careers. This relationship is brought back when both of the boxers are hired to take...

Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement,...

Grudge Match is the movie where we’ll finally get our chance to watch Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro together in a boxing ring. And, I guess we’re all excited about the whole thing. If anyone asks – I’m a huge Rocky fan, so it’s pretty clear that I’m already on Stallone’s side. But we’re not here to talk about my obsession with the Italian Stallion, because we have a little casting update to share with you. The Walking Dead star, Jon Bernthal has just joined the above mentioned cast, and believe it or not – he comes on board to play De Niro’s son.
So, according to the latest reports, Bernthal will play De Niro’s son, aka the guy who is conflicted about training the estranged father he has resented for years.
As you already know, the movie will follow De Niro...

It’s one of those movies that sounds like it’s been thought up on a boozy night out -- wouldn’t it be great if there was a movie where Rocky and Jake Lamotta fight each other in the ring? Well, now there will be! Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are stepping back into the ring as a pair of retired fighters who wish to settle an old score in “Grudge Match,” and now the movie is beginning to round out the rest of its cast. Alan Arkin (hot off a well-received turn in “Argo”) is in talks to appear as Harry ‘Razor’ Sharp’s (Stallone) former trainer, ‘Lighting’ Louis Epstein, who is rescued from a nursing home by the fighter who has taken the fight to pay his medical bills. Meanwhile, Kim Basinger will also join the cast as an old flame of Razor’s who questions...

Alan Arkin is in negotiations to join Robert De Niro, Kim Basinger, and Sylvester Stallone in Warner Bros. boxing drama Grudge Match. The movie is set to be directed by Peter Segal (Get Smart) from a script written by Tim Kelleher and rewritten by Entourage creator Doug Ellin.
In the film, De Niro and Stallone play retired fighters who decide to step into the ring one last time to settle an old score. According to Variety, "Stallone plays Henry 'Razor' Sharp, who retired after winning his last fight against Billy 'The Kid' McGuigan (De Niro), a passionate pugilist who never recovered after losing his belt to Razor and being denied a rematch. Now an out-of-shape restaurant owner, The Kid longs to be back in the spotlight and jumps at the chance to take another shot at Razor."

If you're casting an older actor to play the role of Sylvester Stallone's ringside coach, you couldn't do much better than Burgess Meredith, who starred as Mickey Goldmill in four of the first five Rocky movies. Sadly, however, Meredith died in 1997. So who would be the best possible actor to take the role today? The new movie Grudge Match has found him. Variety reports that the boxing feature, which pits Stallone up against Robert De Niro (a la Rocky Balboa vs. Jake La Motta) is now in talks with Alan Arkin to play Stallone's trainer. The film is being directed by Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Anger Management) and is based on a script by Tim Kelleher (First Kid). The story follows Henry 'Razor' Sharp (Stallone) and Billy 'The Kid' McGuigan (Robert De Niro), two fighters who end their careers on the same night. The Kid, who lost the fight...

Ding ding! Round four! With Grudge Match’s two pooped pugilists now chosen in the form of Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro for director Peter Segal, someone needed to get between them. That brave soul will be Kim Basinger, who has just joined the cast. The man once known as Jake La Motta and the man forever identified as Rocky Balboa will square off in a tale of two retired fighters lured back into the ring in order to settle an old score. It sounds like at least part of their rivalry will have to do with Basinger’s character which, if it all pans out, will mark the second time in a couple of years that De Niro plays a retired bloke still harbouring resentment over old romance, as he’s on to do something similar in next year’s Last Vegas.Kevin Hart is playing the fight...

Last month, Warner Bros. has set comedian Kevin Hart to play the sure-to-be loud-mouthed fight promoter who gets two retired brawlers played by Robert de Niro and Sylvester Stallone, back in the ring.
Word comes from Variety that Oscar-winner Kim Basinger has landed the female lead in the studio comedy revolving around two retired boxers, which Peter Segal (Get Smart) is directing from a script by Tim Kelleher that was most recently rewritten by Entourage creator Doug Ellin.
Basinger will play the woman caught in the middle of the rivalry.
In the ’80s and early ’90s, Basinger often took roles in comedies so this could mark a return to form for her. Up until then, she is currently filming Third Person for director Paul Haggis and will next be seen in the indie drama One Square Mile opposite Richard Jenkins.
Warner Bros. has given the green light on a Segal-directed boxing flick.

Breaking: Warner Bros has set Kevin Hart to play the fight promoter who gets two retired brawlers back in the ring in Grudge Match. Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are now set to play the fighters who square off in the ring, and the studio has greenlighted the film that will be directed by Peter Segal. Tim Kelleher wrote the script and the most recent draft is by Entourage architect Doug Ellin, with Billy Gerber and Mark Steven Johnson producing with Michael Ewing. Hart is hot stuff after Think Like A Man, but the draw here will be to see Rocky Balboa and Jake Lamotta from Raging Bull go at it in a grudge match. Well, if you thought a Raging Bull sequel was a questionable idea, allow me to present you with an even more ludicrous movie pitch. How about a potential Rocky / Raging Bull crossover? It would seem that this very premise is on its way to becoming a reality, albeit not in the exact form you're probably thinking. Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro are reportedly in talks to star in a boxing flick called Grudge Match, where the two would play a pair of retired boxers who decide to go mano-a-mano one last time. The project has been in development at Warner Brothers for a couple of years, although it is only now starting to gain momentum. Oh, there's one other thing I forgot to mention: it's going to be a comedy. According to The Wrap, Peter Segal (Get Smart, The Longest Yard) is attached to direct Grudge Match with Mark Steven Johnson...

Ding ding! Round two… Back in October 2010, word first broke that Get Smart’s Peter Segal was developing boxing comedy Grudge Match for Warners. At the time, we knew the studio was itching to cast Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro as the past-their-prime pugilists. Things have been quiet since then, but now The Wrap reports that the pair is in official talks to co-star.In the time between the original announcement and now, the movie hasn’t been totally dormant. The script, originally written by Tim Kelleher, has since been polished by at least one other scribe, including Entourage creator Doug Ellin. In case it wasn’t clear just from the title, Grudge Match will see two retired boxers, lifelong rivals, who are tempted back into the ring for one last bout.No deals have been signed yet, and there’s always a chance that the old scheduling monster...

Peter Segal ("Get Smart") has set the boxing movie "Grudge Match" at Warner Bros. Pictures as his next project reports Deadline.
The story follows two retired boxers approaching their 70's who are lured back into the ring for a rematch fifty years after their first title fight.
Tim Kelleher penned the script while Mark Steven Johnson and Bill Gerber are producing. Segal's involvement means the long delayed sequel to 2008's "Get Smart" will likely be delayed again.

Tim Kelleher's spec script, picked up by Warners back in May, now has a director: Peter Segal has signed on to direct the over-the-hill boxing comedy Grudge Match. It's the story of two lifelong rival pugilists tempted back into the ring for One Last Fight, even though neither of them has strapped on the gloves for decades.Segal previously directed Get Smart and 50 First Dates, so knows his way around an amiable featherweight project, but he may find himself with some heavyweight stars to wrangle if the studio get their way. Top of Warner's wishlist are, according to Deadline, Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. Pete Segal has made a deal to direct Grudge Match, a Tim Kelleher-scripted comedy about two bitter rivals who are coaxed back into the ring for a grudge match--50 years after they fought for the title. Billy Gerber and Mark Steven Johnson are producing. On the internet, they are trying to line up the fight card with the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro. Too obvious. I say, go back to the Bucket List tandem of Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Actually, insiders said that the characters are in their 60s. Segal last directed 2008's Get Smart, and if this movie happens, I'm not sure when they will be sounding the bell for that sequel.

I really hope this one turns out not to be true.
According to a tweet posted by Production Weekly, Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are rumored to be starring in Grudge Match, a film about two over-the-hill boxers, Billy "The Kid" McGuigan and Henry "Razor" Sharp (good lord, one can only hope the screenplay is half as creative as those names), who decide to take each other on one last time in a grudge match 50 years after their last title fight.
The script is by Tim Kelleher, whose only previous film is Sinbad's First Kid in 1996. Some websites are describing Grudge Match as the Space Cowboys of boxing movies. If either one of those two sentences gets you excited for this project, then remind me not to go to you for movie recommendations.
