Dr. Death is getting a second chance. Peacock has renewed the show for a second season which will focus on a new story. The limited series is now an anthology series.
A true crime drama, the first season of the Dr. Death TV show was released in July 2021. It stars Joshua Jackson, Grace Gummer, AnnaSophia Robb, Christian Slater, and Alec Baldwin. It's based on the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. He was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice until everything suddenly changed. Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and were left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (Robb), set out to...

(Warning: This post, which was originally published July 15, contains mild spoilers for Peacock’s “Dr. Death.”)
As its title strongly suggests, “Dr. Death” isn’t a show about a good physician. And the Peacock limited series — which is based on Wondery’s hit podcast about the real-life Dallas neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch (played by Joshua Jackson) — goes to great pains to depict just how terrible an operator this man was, with many graphic scenes showcasing the spinal surgeries that left many of his patients permanently maimed or dead.
There are surgical tools used in ways that are clearly improper to even those of us watching who have no medical training. There are cracking and crunching noises that will set viewers’ teeth on edge as they wonder if that’s a sound a bone should ever make. And there are an uncomfortable number of times that Duntsch’s surgical team looks...

(Warning: This post, which was originally published July 16, contains spoilers through the finale of “Dr. Death.”)
In Peacock’s limited series “Dr. Death,” the existence and significance of the email Dr. Christopher Duntsch (portrayed by Joshua Jackson) sends to his nurse and lover Kim Morgan (Grace Gummer) the night before he performs an ill-fated spinal surgery on his friend Jerry Summers (Dominic Burgess) is revealed much earlier than the letter’s actual contents.
Due to the twisty nature of the based-on-true-events show’s dual timelines detailing Duntsch’s horrifying missteps as a neurosurgeon and his subsequent trial for the crimes against his patients, viewers get even more teases about how vital the email, which has the subject line “Occam’s Razor,” is going to be for putting Duntsch behind bars before we have enough evidence to understand why.

The villain of “Dr. Death,” Joshua Jackson’s Dr. Christopher Duntsch, is in the spotlight for the better part of the based-on-true-events Peacock limited series, maiming and killing patients who go under his knife for routine spinal surgeries. And it’s because we spend so much time in the dark with Duntsch that when our heroine, Dallas assistant district attorney Michelle Shughart (played by AnnaSophia Robb), finally arrives more than halfway through the show, her ultimate courtroom victory against the neurosurgeon feels that much sweeter.
For viewers who have watched through the end of “Dr. Death” and are looking to dive a little deeper into the facts of the case it’s based on, Robb assured TheWrap of one point in particular: Shughart really does have that cheery disposition in court.

If you’ve already finished Peacock’s new limited series “Dr. Death” and are hungry for more content about the real-life Dr. Christopher Duntsch, boy, are you in luck.
Peacock has set a companion docuseries for “Dr. Death,” which launched Thursday, titled “Dr. Death: The Undoctored Story.” That unscripted show will debut on July 29.
Dr. Christopher Duntsch (portrayed by Joshua Jackson on the scripted show) was an infamous neurosurgeon who was sentenced to life imprisonment after maiming, harming or killing 33 patients who came in for complex but routine spinal surgeries in the Dallas, Texas, area in the early 2010s.
According to the streaming service, the four-part show “will offer audiences the chance to hear and see the whole story, told by the real people who survived it. In addition to interviews with the real-life Dr. Robert Henderson, Dr. Randall Kirby and Michelle Shughart, the docuseries will feature new conversations with...

Joshua Jackson started his career playing some of the sweetest and therefore most beloved characters in pop culture, from Charlie Conway in “The Mighty Ducks” to Pacey Witter on “Dawson’s Creek.” Even as he matured into more adult roles, such as Peter Bishop on “Fringe,” he leaned on likable, even when they became increasingly complex characters. That’s why his work in Peacock’s “Dr. Death” is so notable.
Jackson stars as Christopher Duntsch, the titular nicknamed neurosurgeon, in Peacock’s limited series based on the Wondery podcast of the same name (and of course the real-life former doctor’s story). It is a role he stepped into amid the Covid-19 pandemic when Jamie Dornan vacated the project, and it is one that required nuanced acting. The real-life Duntsch was convicted of and sentenced to life in prison for maiming a patient, while also being accused of injuring almost three...

The medical career of neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch is the stuff of horror stories, except it's very much real. After Duntsch operated on them, two patients died, and over 30 dealt with serious complications. For the longest time, Duntsch hopped from hospital to hospital without any real ramifications. The physician is the topic of Wondery's 2018 podcast Dr. Death, which is now getting the on-screen treatment on Peacock with a limited series that stars Joshua Jackson in the foreboding titular role. But even without media dramatization, the story of Christopher Duntsch is a wholly terrifying one.
Beginning work as a neurosurgeon in 2011, Duntsch appeared to be a trustworthy doctor, welcomed to the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute in Plano with a cushy $600,000 advance. He earned an M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennesse Health Science Center in Memphis. He ran two labs and raised millions in grant funding. But his performance...

NBCUniversal revealed a lot of details regarding their new streaming service, which is called Peacock, which is obviously a nod to NBC’s iconic logo.
The company also unveiled its initial programming slate. We already reported on the reboot of Battlestar Galactica from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as well as Saved By the Bell with Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Elizabeth Berkley set to star; and Punky Brewster, with Soleil Moon Frye set to reprise her role as the title character.
There are a lot of other original shows coming to Peacock, though, along with catalogue series and library films. There will also be original films that will be created by Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and DreamWorks Animation.
Peacock will launch in April of 2020. It will be both advertising and subscription supported streaming service. Details on pricing and distribution will be announced as it gets closer to launch.
