Has been called by literary critics "the modern western short story
writer par excellence." Has received many regional and national
literary awards and has edited 23 anthologies of western
literature.
He served for many years as head of the creative writing department at
the University of Montana.
Graduated from Oregon State University in 1954 with a degree in general
agriculture.
