He began writing jokes as a teenager, while confined to sickbed. From
1936 to 1965, he wrote two to four columns a week for Winchell. At one
point, he was writing large sections of Winchell's Sunday evening radio
broadcasts. He was unmasked as a ghostwriter in 1952. He also wrote six
books.
