J.R. Bookwalter isn’t a name that comes up often when people are discussing awesome genre filmmakers, but there are many of us out there who see him as a hero and an inspiration – and to us, the fact that he has returned to directing after a twenty year break is a major event. In recent months, Bookwalter has been on tour with his new sci-fi horror comedy Side Effects May Vary, bringing it to 35 theatres across the United States (plus a pair of festival screenings in Canada and Germany)… and now it’s time for Side Effects May Vary to come to home video! The movie will be getting a streaming release by the end of the year, but the streaming version is going to be three minutes shorter than the uncut theatrical release version. The only way to get a copy of the uncut, 84 minute version is by...

Know who's really killing indie filmmakers? Other wannabe indie filmmakers. Since making a movie has become so easy and Diy, the market has been flooded with trash by people who have no business even owning a camera. This makes finding the promising indie films an absolute chore.
Still, we wade through the film mire, and when something captures our eyes, we bring it to your attention. Take Adam Ahlbrandt's Hunters for example. Test screenings of the film have resulted in a 50 percent walkout ratio, and apparently one man had a panic attack following his viewing.
It is set to be released by ToeTag Films in the Us and Illusions Unlimited in Germany later this year.
The flick stars Linnea Quigley, J.D. Brown, Kacie Marie, Tina Krause, Haley Madison, Jason Vail, Mel Heflin, Shaun Paul Costello, Tiffany Carroll, Victor Bonacore, Jadie Goodpasture, and Genoveva Rossi. Ahlbrandt directs from a script he wrote.

As this years ABCs of Death 2 Filmmaker Frenzy contest for the letter "M" draws to a close, we figured it would be fun to review some additional short films that caught our attention. (We've recently reviewed Todd Freeman's M is for Marriage, Corey Nikolas' M is for Monkey and the Kondelik Brothers M is for Masochist.)
Below you will find some entries that we took a look at. Be sure to check out the links under the reviews and watch the short films yourselves.
If you like any or all of them, give the film a "like" on that page. Enjoy!

Anthology film The Profane Exhibit has been in the works for some time now, but things are moving along with casting news for the wrap-around along with more detailed descriptions of the various segments and quotes from a few directors. It's a lot of good stuff so prepare to be here awhile.
From the Press Release:
The producers of “The Profane Exhibit” are excited to announce that both Tony Todd (pictured) and Bai Ling have join the long-awaited horror anthology. They will be featured in the cast of "22 Rue des Martyrs," written by Ray Garton, which serves as the film's wrap-around segment.
David Bond and Manda Manuel are the architects of what is likely the most daring independent horror film project to date, both in concept and scope. Assembling an almost surreal collection of over 100 horror icons (directors, writers, actors, musicians, etc.), Bond's vision is to present the audience with...

We've been hearing about the Tiffany Shepis film She Wolf Rising for some time now. It was scheduled to be released back in 2010, but that didn't happen. Now we're foaming at the mouth with anticipation from a new extended trailer that was released on their Facebook page, check it out.
She Wolf Rising is written and directed by Marc Leland with Carl Burrows producing. The film stars Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man), Debbie Rochon (Santa Claws), Timothy Mandala (All My Children), Ruby Larocca (Zombie Babes), Tina Krause (Feeding Frenzy), and J. Edmund Fond.
She Wolf Rising is a comedic horror throwback to a Fright Nightstyle 80’s classic. It’s a fun ride that explores the dark side of underground filmmaking.
Film Synopsis:
Gina Sklar, the reigning queen of horror, portrayed by Tiffany Shepis, lures Jake Bubar (Tim Mandala) into the decadent world of illusions and myths.

Beantown filmmaker Richard Chandler's Boston Film Family has been producing low-budget independent films for eight years. Their most recent offering, Scrooge in the Hood, sounds like a blending of Charles Dickens and Dolemite.
Check out the trailer below for Scrooge in the Hood. It's loaded with ghosts, blood, guns and general bad behavior. The film stars George Raynor, Tina Krause, Seregon O'Dassey, Peter Morse, Kassandre Casame, Bill Jacques, Todd Therrien, Alexander Hauck and Chandler himself appears as the always creepy ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.
Boston Film Family has five feature films under their belt Our Kingdom Come, Sons of Perdition, Heaven and Hell, Legless and now Scrooge in the Hood which was released late last year. The Bff has also produced a collection of shorts, including Hangar 18.

Here at Dread Central we've been closely following every announcement from the upcoming The Profane Exhibit, an anthology film that will feature ten of the most extreme young horror directors in the business today. And now we've got a couple of new stills to keep you drooling over this project.
Last week we brought you some info and a pic from Manna, the Michael Todd Schneider-directed segment of the film. Today we get our first peek at The Good Wife, and it's more of the same unsettling imagery.
Filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia in our favorite country directly to the north of the Border, The Good Wife is directed by Ryan Nicholson (Gutterballs, Hanger) and features Monique Parent (top picture) and Tina Krause (bottom picture).

Dread Central has gotten wind of a secretive project being developed entitled The Profane Exhibit, a new anthology film dealing with the nature of corruption that looks to be a no-holds barred shocker. Although just a few slivers of information have been leaked about this ten-part compilation, what we've seen thus far indicates some serious pushing of the boundaries of good taste, and we've got high hopes for it.
Three of the film's ten directors have been announced, and it seems to be a true rogues' gallery running the show at The Profane Exhibit. Try these names on for size:
Directing a segment entitled Manna, straight from one of the most visually disturbing horror films ever created, August Underground's Mordum, is Michael Todd Schneider. That name alone should be enough to curl the toes of even the most hardened viewer. But that's just the beginning.

The Film:
Troma gets some (maybe justified) flack for the stuff they release. If you’re a fun loving, open-minded horror fans, you will probably appreciate a few too many Dtv films, and that’s okay. Troma, contrary to popular belief, still does release some decent, if not really fun films, but Blood Oath is not – and I mean Not- one of them. Even Tiffany Shepis can’t save this.
A group a kids (yawn) go camping in the woods, where they sit around the camp fire (yawn, man I’m getting tired) and tell of the Krupp kid urban legend..ZZzzz…as they want to find the…zzzzz…..z..z..z.huh?…truth about this legend, only to die….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………..horrifically at the hands of some….wtf?…Leatherface copycat that wears a shredded Raggedy Anne dress…yawn…zzzzz…………………….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………….directed by David Buchert.

Fango just got word of a new feature called Horrotica (no relation to our own upcoming Fangorotica) that starts principal photography this week in the New York/New Jersey era. Produced by Laughing Duck Media, it’s a horror/comedy directed by Marc Leland and starring a bevy of indie fright-flick starlets and stalwarts, headed by Tiffany Shepis (pictured).
Shepis plays B-movie actress Gina Sklar, whose attempts to track down stolen footage from her latest flick with the help of her number-one fan (Tim Mandala) lead her into some scary situations. The cast also includes J. Edmund Ford (as a producer named Lonzo), Flesh For The Beast’s Ruby Larocca, Penny Dreadful’s Tina Krause, busy newcomer Nicola Fiore, Carl “Doc” Burrows and The Blood Shed’s Alan Rowe Kelly. Frequent Kelly collaborator Tom Burns is doing the music, while Blood Night: The Legend Of Mary Hatchet’s Jeremy Selenfriend handles the makeup FX.

"We didn't want to make a normal movie," Frank Henenlotter said of himself and producer/co-writer/rapper R.A. "The Rugged Man" Thorburn, introducing Bad Biology at the 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival. "We wanted something that was just wrong." And to paraphrase the popular saying, if going against the usual genre grain is wrong, who wants to be right? Bad Biology marks the welcome and long-overdue return (after 16 years without a feature) of one of the most unique and committed visions in independent horror, one whose underground sensibilities clearly haven't mellowed with age. If anything, Bad Biology is even more deranged than his previous works, and where sex was just one element or an undercurrent in the likes of Frankenhooker and Brain Damage, here the carnal takes center stage.
Jennifer (Charlee Danielson) is a New York City photographer with a penchant for quite twisted and murderous imagery that nonetheless has nothing on her personal life.

Friend of the site and indie producer Jeff Chitty (Bonnie and Clyde Vs. Dracula) dropped us a line yesterday with a heads up about his latest film, The Devil’s Fork, complete with a trailer you can check out below.
The Devil’s Fork follows a couple (Debbie Rochon, pictured, and Allen Lowman) who encounter a strange hitchhiker (Tina Krause) and her even stranger and more dangerous accomplice, Preacher (Jared Cyr) on their way home from a wedding. The drifters put the couple through a series of hellish tests to find out if they are truly survivors.
For now all that’s been shot is the trailer you can see below, but the hope is the trailer will be enough to drum up funds to get a budget in place to shoot the whole film. Keep it here for updates as The Devil's Fork comes to life!

For now all that’s been shot is the trailer you can see below, but the hope is the trailer will be enough to drum up funds to get a budget in place to shoot the whole film. Keep it here for updates as The Devil's Fork comes to life!

Kansas City-based filmmaker Jeff Chitty gave Fango an exclusive look at a promotional trailer he recently shot for his road movie/horror film Devil’S Fork. You can see it below the cut.
The trailer is part of Chitty’s plan to raise financing for the movie, and showcases the cast who have already committed to star in the feature: Allen Lowman from Bonnie And Clyde Vs. Lowman and Rochon play a couple driving home from a wedding reception who encounter a strange hitchhiker named Autumn (Krause) and her companion, Preacher (Cyr), resulting in what Chitty calls “a true road trip from hell!”
