Exclusive: Sky Studios has denied that it is piloting a Hugh Bonneville comedy about slavery amid a backlash from Black creatives on social media.
The Comcast-owned European studio said Forty Acres depicts Bonneville’s character reflecting on the genesis of his “generational wealth” and is “categorically not a comedy about slavery.”
The working title is, however, a play on a failed Civil War reparations program known as “40 acres and a mule.” Forty acres happens to be the size of the estate owned by Bonneville’s character.
Sky has not formally announced the project, but it was reported on by the British Comedy Guide. The publication initially said the pilot, penned by Wonka and Hijack star Rufus Jones, was about “historic slavery.” The story has since been updated to say Forty Acres is about “Britain’s murky colonial legacy.”

After the success of their Oscar-nominated collaboration on the 2013 drama “Philomena,” starring Judi Dench, director Stephen Frears and star-screenwriter Steve Coogan were eager to team up once again — similarly this time on a true-life-inspired tale about amateur sleuthing.
“The Lost King” tells the story of Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), a self-guided historian who seemingly stumbles upon the remains of Richard III, only to be thwarted by various forces that doubt her discovery, much of them in academia.
Frears and Coogan stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss what drew them to work together on this unique project, which also rejoined them with “Philomena” composer Alexandre Desplat, co-writer Jeff Pope and producer Christine Langan.

The story of a mature woman determined to dig up a long-buried secret history, The Lost King tells a tale not unlike that of Philomena (2013), the award-winning British comedy-drama crafted by much the same key creative talents as this film. Actor-writer-producer Steve Coogan, his co-screenwriter Jeff Pope, director Stephen Frears, composer Alexandre Desplat and producer Christine Langan have gotten the band back together to dramatize the story of how self-taught historian Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, found the remains of King Richard III in a parking lot.
The result is pleasant-enough middlebrow entertainment that will serve the cinematic needs of older viewers especially. But it’s considerably less interesting than Philomena, a more muckraking work that churned over the Catholic Church’s shameful past and had the all-powerful empathy-extracting weapon that is Judi Dench doing an Irish accent. Moreover, it’s just...

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to The Lost King ahead of its debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film reunites the team behind 2013’s Philomena — Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope — for a comedy-drama based on a true story about Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, and the historian who helped uncover the remains of King Richard III, lost for more than 500 years, beneath a carpark in the English city of Leicester.
The discovery, in 2012, was the culmination of years of obsessive research by Langley, who faced the incomprehension of friends and family and the derision of experts and academics, and whose role was largely overlooked. Coogan will play Langley’s husband and Frears will direct from a script co-written by Coogan and Pope.

“Miss Austen” is Hornby’s third novel and revolves around the lives and loves of Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. It delves into why Cassandra burned a treasure trove of letters written by her sister, Jane — an act of destruction that has troubled academics and Austen fans for centuries.
“‘Miss Austen’ is about one of the most important people in Jane Austen’s life, her sister Cassandra,” “Masterpiece” executive producer Susanne Simpson said. “We can’t wait to bring Gill Hornby’s captivating novel to life for our ‘Masterpiece’ audience.”

Exclusive: Pathé has boarded world sales ahead of the AFM on UK comedy-drama The Lost King, inspired by the remarkable 2012 true story of finding Brit monarch King Richard III’s remains under a Leicester car park.
Steve Coogan has co-written the script with his Stan & Ollie and Philomena collaborator Jeff Pope. Philomena director and two-time Oscar nominee Stephen Frears is aboard to direct.
Coogan will co-star in the film as the husband of Philippa Langley, the woman who undertook the search for King Richard’s remains, which had been lost for more than 500 years.
The movie will put a spotlight on Langley, whose obsessive search was derided by many. In 2012, she led the charge to exhume Richard’s skeleton, which she believed to be under a car park in the UK city of Leicester. In the global media circus that followed the discovery, Langley’s role was often overlooked.

Search Party producer Jax Media is expanding internationally and has hired Molly Seymour from Alan Partridge producer Baby Cow to run a UK division.
The Imagine Entertainment-owned producer, which is also making forthcoming Pop comedy Florida Girls and produces Netflix’s Russian Doll and Comedy Central’s The Other Two, is looking to work with UK talent and independently shoot pilots and shorts in the UK for U.S. and international markets.
Seymour will lead these efforts, which come as the company expands its independent pilot model. She joins from Baby Cow, which is run by Alan Partridge creator Steve Coogan and CEO Christine Langan. She has been at the company for over three years as a comedy development producer. She will report to Jax Media CEO Tony Hernandez and President of Original Programing Brooke Posch.

Exclusive: George & George, the production company run by Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine in association with Alan Partridge producer Baby Cow, is developing a TV series based on best-selling novel Old Baggage.
The company is working with U.S. producer Braven Films, the company behind Rachel Weisz’s feature film Disobedience, to develop it as a returning series after optioning the book.
Written by Lissa Evans, the book, which made the number spot on The Times best-sellers list, is a comic novel about the legacy of the Women’s Suffrage Movement and one woman’s determination to create a meaningful present in the wake of her own thrilling and revolutionary past. It follows the fiery, indefatigable and wilful, Matilda Simkin, who has made a life of righteous defiance. Once a proudly militant suffragette, her colourful past is littered with acts of bravery and rebellion but, as Mattie enters middle age,...

For a world reeling from divisive politics and barefaced cynicism, Jon S. Baird’s Stan & Ollie, based on Jeff Pope’s screenplay about Laurel & Hardy’s unceremonious tour of Great Britain after the Second World War, when their stars had largely faded, is an existential salve. It is a paean to the spirit of artistry that drove two of the finest comic performers ever to grace the screen and a testament to their resolve when the world seemed determined to drive a wedge between them and forget about their contribution.
Now, in 2019, the legacy of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy is assured, but it wasn’t always so. As they struggled to set up another feature film, and were rocked by the high costs of divorce and the challenges they faced negotiating their contracts, they toured to half-empty playhouses in post-war Britain in order to scrape a meager living as...

There is an art to making comedy about irritating, self-involved, or even just flat-out terrible people. Sharp writing can make such characters wickedly funny, spitting jokes like acid that sting as hard as they land (see: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”); it can peel back their defensive spiky layers to find surprising depth and tenderness hiding just underneath (see: “You’re the Worst”). But no matter what the approach, there has to be some dynamism in order to keep the story afloat, some glancing indication that the comedy’s got a little more to it than just showing off the depraved depths to which its characters could sink.
“Camping,” apparently, missed this memo.
The new HBO series — from “Girls” creators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, based on a series by British comedian Julia Davis — strands a group of deeply irritating people out in the woods together for eight episodes worth of misery.

U.K. production company George & George is partnering with Steve Coogan and Christine Langan’s Baby Cow, the companies announced Friday. The new three-year joint venture will have a first-look deal with BBC Studios.
The deal aims to capitalize on George & George founders Vicki Pepperdine and Joanna Scanlan’s writing and performing experience alongside Baby Cow’s track record of developing writing talent to develop new television projects. The two companies will develop new comedy and drama series.
“These days we’ve so many platforms to watch [television] and we want to equal that with the volume of women’s stories for viewers to feast on,” said Pepperdine and Scanlan. “With the support of the best of the best at Baby Cow and BBC Studios we’re good to go.”
Pepperdine and Scanlan, who were BAFTA-nominated in 2013 for their writing on BBC medical sitcom “Getting On” alongside Jo Brand, will write,...
