Christine Baranski “knows how to nail a closeup,” remarks Baranski’s “The Good Fight” costar Sarah Steele in CBS Television Studios’ Emmy Fyc video (watch above). The two-minute clip package reminds Emmy voters of some of Baranski’s greatest moments from “The Good Fight” Season 2 while intermixing accolades from her cast. “She’s also hilariously funny,” continues Steele, who plays fan-favorite assistant Marissa Gold.

Costume design isn’t all fancy designer clothes and period outfits. Sometimes the costume designers themselves have to give the clothes off their backs.
“I took my bra off for Lisa Bonet. She forgot her bra,” Michelle Cole said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel featuring four top Emmy contenders, moderated by this author (watch above). Cole was working as a customer under the late Palmer Brown on “A Different World” at the time. “I had to take my bra off for her and give it to her. She had no choice.”

Mari-An Ceo has proven herself wrong. During Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, moderated by this author, Ceo revealed that she initially turned down styling the NBC series because “I said it could not be done.” The period-specific costumes in the drama, in which its three heroes Lucy (Abigail Spencer), Wyatt (Matt Lanter) and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) time-travel, would be a daunting task to accomplish in a movie, but tackling new time period every week — and a time period is never repeated — “just is not possible,” Ceo thought.
“[Co-creator] Eric Kripke, who I’ve worked with before and had great confidence in me, said, ‘Please, just go up to Canada and just get it going. We just really want to do this show. We’ll figure it out as we go and we’ll back you up. We’ll be there for you,’” Ceo recalled. “I said I...

Hala Bahmet didn’t know what she was getting into when she agreed to be the costume designer for “This Is Us.” Bahmet had styled the pilots of “This Is Us” and “Riverdale,” and when both were picked up to series, she had to choose one, she revealed at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, moderated by this author (watch above). At the time, she had very little info to go on about the NBC drama — it was still untitled and no one knew about the multiple-timeline format.
“In the pilot, we really just show the two eras: what’s 1979-1980 and then contemporary. And none of us knew what the storylines were going to be going forward in the series. And we didn’t know we were always going to be in a minimum of four decades at all times, every few days,” Bahmet said. “I asked [my crew], I said,...

Outside of “The Good Wife” pilot, Daniel Lawson oversaw the fashionable fashions on all seven seasons of the legal drama, transforming boring office-wear into aspirational, sophisticated and feminine power suits. So when its spin-off “The Good Fight” was picked up to series, the two-time Emmy nominee wanted to raise the bar even more.
“I think we definitely upped the ante,” Lawson said at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, moderated by this author (watch above). “With the first episode of ‘The Good Fight,’ we knew people would tune in looking for ‘The Good Wife’ because that was the mothership, but by the end of [the pilot], we knew it needed to [be] its own show, its own feeling, otherwise people wouldn’t continue to tune in because it was too similar. … I felt like I went in and wanted to do more.”

The Good Wife ending, you know, that big slap, sure was divisive amongst fans, but Julianna Margulies isn't surprised. And she's not mad at it either. "I thought it was exactly how it should end," she told E! News at The Accessories Council 20th Annual Ace Awards where she and Good Wife costumer designer Daniel Lawson were being honored. "I thought it was fabulous...her in that beautiful Armani jacket, that silhouette from the back, you straightening that jacket and walking off into the future," Lawson added. "I thought it was brilliant. I thought she was ready to take on anything. I thought it was kind of a happy ending." The series ended with Christine Baranski's...

Politics and pop culture collided in an epic way during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
First Lady Michelle Obama sent the Internet into a frenzy when she wore the same Michael Kors suit that Alicia Florrick, Julianna Marguilies' beloved The Good Wife character, donned on a season five episode of the hit show. Now, Et is talking to the CBS drama's costume designer Daniel Lawson about the wardrobe choice.

The origami-inspired tweed jacket comes from Michael Kors' 2013 fall line, and Daniel couldn't have been happier with the decision.

How much do we all wish we were just like The Good Wife's Alicia Florrick?
Maybe we should ask Michelle Obama if she feels the same way.
During Tuesday's State of the Union address, the First Lady could be seen wearing what appears to be the same suit worn by Julianna Margulies, who plays the First Lady of Illinois on CBS's hit drama series. An eagle-eyed fan made the connection and posted the comparison shots on Instagram, generating lots of buzz and OMGs on social media.

“The Walking Dead” boss: "We're trying not to be the 'character death show’" As Season 5 begins, showrunner Scott M. Gimple and creator Robert Kirkman want to emphasize that they don’t set out to kill characters. "We don't want to play it as like a tool in our tool chest or something that's some part of story rhythm,” says Gimple. Adds Kirkman: "No one in the writers' room is ever sitting around saying, 'We haven't killed someone in a while. We really need to kill someone.' It all comes from story and if we ever decided that the story merited absolutely no characters deaths whatsoever in a season, we would definitely do that.” Plus: Expect a grisly season premiere, everything you need to know as Season 5 kicks off, the season premiere is “a dazzling adrenaline rush filled with suspense, righteous violence and, before it’s all over, genuine emotion,...

"The Good Wife" has been nothing short of remarkable in its fifth season, and though attention has rightfully focused on the CBS Sunday drama's plots, one aspect of the show has consistently been brilliant: the wardrobe.
Julianna Margulies and Christine Baranski, as Alicia and Diane, always look chic and have very individual looks. And Matt Czuchry and Alan Cumming, as Cary and Eli, present very different takes on lawyers in suits.
"People in Chicago have access to high-end clothing," costume designer Dan Lawson tells Zap2it. "In Chicago, what you see is what you get. There is less putting on airs. There's an earnestness and truthfulness for what they wear in Chicago."
Alicia, he reminds us, was a "North Shore politician's wife. She would have been at Talbots and shopping at Old Orchard, Marshall Field, Lord & Taylor. There is a real sense of classic lines to her look."

Consider “Marthas and Caitlins” a pause in the series, an episode more concerned with regrouping characters and establishing priorities than pushing the action forward. It will take a while to get to the events behind that odd title, but when we do, there will be sharp lessons for Alicia. And the producers also have some fun bringing back incarcerated wife murderer Colin Sweeney (Dylan Baker) and casting Democratic strategist Donna Brazile as herself.
The court case involves a plane crash that left 40 people dead.

Now that we've sequenced human DNA, we move on to our six-legged friends, whose genes might yield important and lucrative discoveries in many fields.
The Human Genome Project was a $3.8 billion undertaking that has so far yielded over $800 billion in economic output. The 5,000 Insect Genome Project (i5k), an initiative that aims to sequence the genomes of 5,000 insects and arthropods over the next five years, could reap similar rewards--but for a fraction of the price.
The initiative's launch group, which includes researchers from the Usda, the European Bioinformatics Institute and Kansas State University, believes that it can sequence all 5,000 genomes for $5 million (and handle bioinformatics and data mining for another $10 million). This is just a fraction of the million or so insect species in existence, of course, but DNA sequencing costs are dropping constantly--so a goal of 5,000 insects is just the start, according to American Entemologist. What might we look...
