- He formed Terry Lightfoot's Jazzmen in 1955 after finishing his national service with the RAF. The band released their first album in 1957, with a line-up that included drummer Ginger Baker, who went on to become a member of rock band Cream.
- In 1978, he took a sabbatical from touring, becoming pub landlord of the Three Horseshoes in Hertfordshire, where he promoted jazz.
