BRUSSELS -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder and European Union telecoms commissioner Erkki Liikanen pledged Thursday in Berlin to work together to boost broadband technologies in Europe. The two agreed that high-speed Internet access is essential if the EU is to take advantage of the applications and services promised by new broadcast, cable and telecommunications technologies. "By improving quality and reducing prices, information and communication technologies are an important enabler of innovation and organizational change that enhance productivity," Liikanen said after his meeting with Schroder and representatives from the German Initiative D21, which aims to update the rules on new media technologies.
