Hallmark Media isn’t worried about losing talent from their roster. During Wednesday’s Television Critics Association press conference, President and CEO Wonya Lucas and EVP of programming Lisa Hamilton Daly discussed the changes happening at the network with talent heading to competitors, including Great American Family (previously titled Gac).
“We’ve kept a lot of our talent under options, save for Christmas movies. We’re looking for new talent all the time. I think there’s a lot of talent out there that we’ve worked with in the past that Gac is now working with, but I think that we also are constantly trying to evolve the talent pool that we’re working with,” said Lucas. “We have, I think, retained almost everybody that we’re really excited to have. So
that’s where we are.”
Daly noted that it also goes beyond Great American Family.

“I really believe in experimentation,” says “Master of None” editor Jennifer Lilly. For our recent webchat, she continues, “When we first got the material, we weren’t sure if it was going to work. When we got the footage we thought, ‘let’s do the brave edit. Let’s be in that laundromat for 10 minutes.’ To see what happens and how it feels? It was about just trying it and making discoveries that you wouldn’t necessarily approach the material knowing.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The third “Master of None” season carries the title “Moments in Love” and is a departure from its previous iterations. Rather than focusing on the character of Dev (Aziz Ansari), the season focuses on Denise (Lena Waithe) and her relationship with partner Alicia (Naomi Ackie).

Frank & Lola, a noirish erotic thriller from journalist-turned-director Matthew M. Ross, finds leads Michael Shannon and Imogen Poots in top form. They excel as lovers in this tightly-wound psychosexual love story that has elements of the best of Eyes Wide Shut.
Frank (Shannon) is a high-flying chef working in top-end restaurants in Las Vegas. At the bar of his establishment he meets Poots’ Lola as she glides into his bar, and director Ross sets the scene by opening the film on the ensuing sex, a moody awkward sequence that heightens a sense of menace behind these beautiful starlets.
As time passes, Frank grows ever-conscious of the age gap between them both, and has suspicions about a rich younger man (Justin Long) who offers Lola a dream job at a fashion outlet. Soon his worst fears are confirmed, as Lola returns home one night in tears, admitting to a one night...

The Sundance June Directors Lab is underway, and blogging here at Filmmaker from the Sundance Resort in Utah will be two of the Lab’s filmmakers. Here is Carson Mell, attending with his dark comedy, Ajax, about “a band of alcoholic astronauts and a young woman adrift in outer space [who] become at odds with one another after discovering the purpose of their mysterious mission.” Read part one of his series here.
The Sundance Directors Lab is over now, and I’m starting the Screenwriters Lab again in a couple of days. Out of the last 17 days, we’ve only had two days when we weren’t rehearsing, shooting, or editing. I’m exhausted, currently re-editing one of the four scenes I shot, but still wish that there was more.
My main goal up here has been finding a way to incorporate improvisation into my work, and at what stages in the process to do so,...
