The drama America’s Family had a strong showing at the 25th annual Dances with Films festival in Los Angeles, claiming the Grand Jury Award for Features as well as the Audience Award for Competition Features when the fest wrapped on Sunday.
The film from writer-director Anike L. Tourse watches as the Diaz family home is raided by Ice on Thanksgiving, with mother Marisol (Tourse) being put in detention, son Koke (Ricardo Cisneros) being deported and father Jorge (Mauricio Mendoza) fleeing for protective sanctuary. Marisol and Jorge’s two American-born children—young attorney Emiliano (Emmanuel López Alonso) and his disabled teen sister Valentina (Jailene Arias)—then scramble to reunite the family as their parents and brother fight to get home.

Before we move on to my regularly scheduled column, I have to plug the Kickstarter going for a ComicMix comics collection running through September 15th. It’s got a lot of great talent like Neil Gaiman, Gabby Rivera and Gerard Way. Check it out!
Now that that’s out of the way, let me get back to my hot takes on the comics biz.
Last month I wrote about Spider-Man: Homecoming and how I wish they had more comics the reflected that interpretation of the character. There isn’t really a comic they put out recently that does, but I heard Spidey is kind of close so I picked up the first trade.
Spidey originally hit the stands back December of 2015 at #25 on the sales charts equating to 65,503 copies sold. The idea was to do an out of continuity Spider-Man that went back to basics; Peter Parker is back in high school,...

As I’ve pointed out in my reviews of the previous issues, this is on the surface a very derivative series, mixing up a wide variety of genres but also managing to blend them together into a nice, cohesive story. Anyway, one man’s imitation is another man’s homage, is it not. What makes this melting pot of genres work is to a degree the strong, though obviously still establishing themselves, cast of characters and the living, breathing city of Olissipo City. You always get the impression that a lot is going on in that city in the background, though we are only following the main storyline ourselves. It reminds me of that classic TV show intro, ‘There’s a million stories in the Naked City. This is just one of them’.
A lot happened last issue.

I’m not entirely convinced Man Plus knows what it wants to be yet. Is it deliberately playing around with concepts and genres until it finds the ones that fit together the best, or is creator/writer/ artist Andre Lima Araujo so confident in his vision that he is happy throwing everything into the pot as and when he chooses? Cyberpunk, anime, manga, police procedural, thriller, action, noir, and straightforward sci-fi; you name it, it’s had a turn in the first two issues. On another occasion, with another book, I would be complaining about how messy such a mosaic of genres is, but Araujo pulls it off very well.
Olissipo City is certainly an interesting place, only slowing becoming fully realised but no less intriguing for that. On paper it is standard fare,...

Our introduction to Olissipo City last issue was an interesting one. Olissipo City is a city created and run by corporations in the near future, a pretty familiar concept in cyberpunk/ manga/ anime but handled really well here by Andre Lima Araujo, the creator/ writer/ artist. What elevated it that little extra bit was the addition of genres that in lesser hands may have jarred a little, but here just felt organic and natural. We got a touch of noir, a touch of police procedural, and some (more expected) sci-fi action adventure. It was a good set-up, including the introduction of several groups of characters whom we had yet to know enough about to know if they were on the good or bad sides, or if everyone was a bit of both.

Cyberpunk. A word that reflects both the best of science fiction, and the worst. When done right, we get a glimpse into our probable future, a world of huge cities and amazing technology. When done badly, a lazy technique to cobble together whatever disparate elements the writer feels like using, and character is always second to technology (don’t get me started on steampunk, we’ll be here all day).
As Andre Lima Araujo is both writer and artist, it’s easy to see where to heap our praise or scorn, as this is very much his vision. First impressions? Good. He does indeed utilise traditional cyberpunk elements, but marries them well with other genres. We get a dash of detective noir, a sprinkle of mystery thriller, and a slice of action movie,...

After having first surfaced online as a rumor via Daily Mail, Variety has now confirmed that actor Paul Bettany has been cast as The Vision in Joss Whedon’s highly-anticipated sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Many fans have long suspected that J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s AI personal assistant (voiced by Bettany), would eventually be incorporated into the cinematic version of Ultron in a manner similar to the way Hank Pym’s Ultron winds up turning into the villain in the comics. However, with Bettany’s new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s safe to say that the creation of The Vision will be directly connected to Tony Stark. That doesn’t mean to say that the synthetic android won’t be seen as the first creation of Ultron, the titular villain of the upcoming sequel.

The first series to spin out of Brian Michael Bendis’ “Age of Ultron” has just been announced via USA Today, confirming that writer Sam Humphries and artist Andre Lima Araujo will be helming “Avengers A.I.” this July. The upcoming series will follow a team of robotic heroes that include former Runaway Victor Mancha, a new character named Alexis, Vision, Hank Pym, Monica Chang (Shield commander of the 616 Universe) and even a renegade Doombot as they traverse a new Marvel Universe that’s quickly becoming more and more threatened by a new wave of artificial intelligence.
“The Marvel Universe within the blink of an eye is being colonized by A.I.s who may or may not have positive feelings about the way humanity has been treating them for the past 100 years,” says writer Sam Humphries.
