Exclusive: Animated drama series Pantheon, which stars the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano and Taylor Schilling, is the latest series to be scrapped at AMC Networks.
The series has been canceled after one season, despite a two-season order, and pulled from AMC’s streaming service as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive. The second season, which had been produced, will not air.
Pantheon joins shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Moonhaven, which were all axed as part of a one-time tax write-down at the end of last year.
This write-down features around 400M of content and was revealed in an SEC filing in December.
“As a result of the Plan, the programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation...

By the time the second season of HBO's Prohibition crime series "Boardwalk Empire" rolled around, its hero was on the outs, deeply in need of muscle as his various criminal enterprises caught up with him.
In a show already teeming with some of the finest character actors around, anybody who arrived to lend support to protagonist Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) would need to make an immediate impression on the audience. The actor would need to compete with known greats like Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael K. Williams, besides being a meaningful foil for Buscemi. Luckily for the show, this actor did.
He might not have had the name recognition of the rest of the show's cast, but Charlie Cox proved a potent screen presence on a show that was drowning in it. As the Irish mercenary Owen Sleater, he gave the show a light sense of charm that could distract from...

AMC+’s Pantheon posits a near future in which not one but two different companies have cracked the code to “uploaded intelligence” (Ui) — distinct from AI in that these aren’t sentient consciousnesses born of computers but ones born as humans, and then digitized into the cloud at the end of their corporeal lives. The approaches taken by Logorhythms and Alliance differ in minor points but, strikingly, both have chosen to deploy this bleeding-edge science in the same way: by stripping the UIs of everything but their professional skills so that they can continue toiling without end in the afterlife, trapped in simulated offices with little memory of any existence beyond work.

For this summer’s first Free Shakespeare in the Park presentation (opening tonight), director Ruben Santiago-Hudson delivers an Othello that does its best to put the focus on the killer and his doomed Desdemona, but that weasel of all weasels Iago just won’t be ignored.
That’s partly because Corey Stoll plays the ultimate conniver with such a convivial air that turning away isn’t much of an option.
Much like the gimmick-free production itself – aside from bits of rock-star leather, Toni-Leslie James’ costumes are sumptuous black and gold period dress, as if to scotch any memory of last summer’s controversial Trumpian suit & tie Julius Caesar – Chukwudi Iwuji couldn’t be more straightforward as the fatally jealous Othello, whose love for Desdemona (Boardwalk Empire‘s Heather Lind) spirals into violent obsession.

You almost have to feel sorry for Chukwudi Iwuji, the talented British actor who plays the title role in “Othello” in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production that opened Monday.
He delivers a confident performance in an exquisite revival of the Bard’s classic tragedy, infusing the tragic Moor with both the cockiness of a war hero and the lustiness of a man who has wooed a woman seemingly above his station but whose ardor is very much at the forefront of his thoughts.
Like so many Othellos before him, though, Iwuji is ultimately upstaged by a truly brilliant performance by Corey Stoll as the duplicitous Iago. Stealing a page from his former “House of Cards” co-star Kevin Spacey, Stoll delivers a portrait of evil at its most charming and, dare I say, appealing.

Actress Jordana Grolnick has become the second woman to accuse former President George H.W. Bush of sexual harassment. The actress says she met Bush in August 2016 on the set of a Maine production of “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” He allegedly came backstage during intermission and fondled her while taking a photo with the cast. Grolnick claims Bush told her that his favorite magician was “David Cop-a-Feel” while he was groping her.
“We all circled around him and Barbara for a photo, and I was right next to him,” Grolnick told Deadspin. “He reached his right hand around to my behind, and as we smiled for the photo he asked the group, ‘Do you want to know who my favorite magician is?’ As I felt his hand dig into my flesh, he said, ‘David Cop-a-Feel!’”

AMC’s historical drama Turn: Washington’s Spies received a renewal for a fourth season that wraps up the entire series...
Fans of the AMC show Turn: Washington’s Spies just received what would have to be double-edged bayonet on their musket. The basic cable giant’s dramatic serial depiction of the American Revolution’s famed Culper Spy Ring just received a renewal for Season 4. However, said renewal also comes with a crucial caveat in the bittersweet news that the upcoming new season will be its very last.

I think it’s pretty hard to argue that Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t among the absolute top tier of actors in Hollywood right now. For the last few years, he’s been delivering one tremendous performance after the other. He hasn’t yet connected with the Academy on that second Oscar nomination so far, but was close with Nightcrawler for sure. This week, he has another strong performance to submit for consideration in Demolition, a quirkier movie than usual for him, but a fascinating one, to say the least. It has received mixed reviews so far, but I’m quite fond of it, and actually would list it as one of my favorite films of the year. With the release upon us, I felt it was only appropriate to discuss the flick a bit. The film is a quirky dramedy centering around how we deal with grief. Davis (Gyllenhaal) is...

The defiance of social mores and expectations can be the stuff of great drama, and watching Jake Gyllenhaal register almost no feeling about the sudden death of his wife gives “Demolition,” for most of its running time, an exciting level of unpredictability. Here’s a man who is so clearly not behaving in the expected manner that we have absolutely no idea what he’ll do next. Gyllenhaal stars as Davis, a rapacious young Wall Street whiz kid who seemingly has everything, up to and including his beautiful wife Julia (Heather Lind, “Turn”), who just happens to be the daughter...

Chicago – The attempt to make a European-style “journey of emotional morality” between four characters in New York City kept getting flatter and flatter as the tale emerged. It’s amusing that they called it “Demolition,” because as cinema, it’s basically a teardown.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It’s Jake Gyllenhaal at his “Gyllenhaal-est” as a guilty widower who reacts in a special way when mourning his wife’s untimely death – and somehow it involves a mysterious outsider and her conveniently weird son, and lots of angst. There are some interesting feelings to consider, but they are all screwed into the ground until they melt at the center core. The director, Canadian Jean Marc-Valleé, has hacked it up before (the overrated “Dallas Buyer’s Club”), but this time the choppy narrative and attempts at “relevance” is a Hacker’s Hall of Fame. And dang nab the happy ending, which was tacked on so...

Jake Gyllenhaal takes a sledgehammer to his grief in the flawed but well-acted Demolition. It’s the story of Manhattan investment broker Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), whose wife, Julia (Heather Lind), is killed in a car wreck while they’re arguing about a leaky refrigerator. Davis is uninjured and, while waiting in the emergency room’s lobby, has an encounter with a vending machine there that fails to properly dispense his peanut M&Ms. He feels little in terms of anguish over the sudden loss of his wife, even returning to work the next day. It’s that denied bag of candy that really gets under his skin so he begins writing to the vending company’s customer complaint department — long, personal letters that become a narrative device illustrating Davis’ state of mind. On the receiving end of his rants is the vending company’s owner’s wife Karen Moreno (Naomi Watts...

There are endless canards about how grief dissolves all human rationality, and no small number of real-life examples of apparently inexplicable behavior to back it up. (Here’s a random news story to this effect which came up after a Google News search for “grieving man.”) For all that movie-watchers may grumble about logic in ill-defined scripts, the “truth is stranger than fiction” defense technically could defend almost any unmotivated action a character may take. Anyone can be weird, stupid, or both.
And yet, and yet, there’s still an art to creating insensate onscreen behavior that, well, makes sense. I’d even suggest that conveying authentic irrationality separates the filmmaking women from the girls. If one can’t pull it off, then a movie seems like nothing but a string of incidences justified by, “Well, I thought it would be vivid if …” This is a good deal of both indie and faux-indie film,...

Investment banker Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) has spent a long time not paying attention to the very picture perfect, successful, and predictable life he’s been living. But when he finally does look up, he’s sitting in the passenger seat of a car, and it’s too late to warn his wife Julia (Heather Lind) that she’s about to be side-swiped. And so begins Jean-Marc Vallée’s “Demolition,” with a death that awakens a young man who has been sleepwalking through his own existence for far too long. Julia’s death instigates a wellspring of mourning. Flowers and food appear on Davis’s doorstep, his mother and father move in for a spell, Julia’s parents are nearly paralyzed by the loss of their only child, but Davis finds himself feeling absolutely nothing, and unable to properly grieve. He pours out his feelings in the first of what...

Anger. Denial. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. Relief? In the latest trailer for Jean-Marc Vallee’s (Dallas Buyers Club) soon-to-be-released Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal’s investment banker, largely unfazed by the sudden death of his doting wife, begins to unravel like one complex piece of origami, and the result is a drama you daren’t take your eye off.
Playing the part of Davis, Gyllenhaal’s protagonist is a wonderful fusion of bemusement and frank honesty, even in the face of a personal crisis. Seeking an outlet for his grief – even if he isn’t aware of it – Davis makes a mountain out of a mole hill when he decides to pen complaints to a vending machine company over a broken machine, catching the attention of Naomi Watts’ customer service rep, Karen.
Beginning to get a better handle on his fracturted life, the introduction of Watts’ character and her rebellious son (Judah Lewis...

"What are we doing, again?" "We're taking apart my marriage." Fox Searchlight has debuted a new trailer for Jean-Marc Vallée's Demolition, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a depressed man struggling to put his life together after his wife dies in a car accident. This film premiered at Tiff last year (read Marco's review) and has been awaiting release until April this year. Aside from Gyllenhaal, the cast includes Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper, Heather Lind and Judah Lewis. With all the footage from this trailer, and the footage from the first trailer last year, I feel like I've seen pretty much most of the movie and I'm not sure what else there is to this. In all honesty, it looks good but not great, with only so much to offer. Give it a watch below. Here's the second trailer for Jean-Marc Vallée's Demolition, found on YouTube (via The Film Stage): A successful investment banker,...

A privileged white collar worker literally decides to tear his old life apart in order to start a new one in Jean-Marc Vallee's Demolition, a movie whose agenda is muddled due to heavy-handed writing and an uneven style behind the camera. Jake Gyllenhaal continues his recent streak of great performances as Davis, a confused financial employee who is introduced at the beginning of the film getting into a head-on collision with his equally confused wife Julia (played by Heather Lind). He survives the crash but is left with little direction in terms of how to move forward. This is a man who at the center of his core refuses to mourn his wife's death and instead channels his grief in other areas. One of those methods is by writing long, detailed letters to the vending machine company that crapped out on him in the hospital waiting room. The woman on...

Jake Gyllenhaal knows how to move! The hunky actor shows off some fancy footwork—complete with gyrations, spins and slides—in Demolition, his upcoming dramedy in which he stars as a man who befriends a vending machine employee (Naomi Watts) and her son (newcomer Judah Lewis) after the tragic death of his wife (Heather Lind). His big dance sequence takes place throughout the busy streets of New York City. Director Jean-Marc Vallée filled Gyllenhaal's iTunes with a mystery playlist. "He gave me a mix of these songs I'd never even heard and that's his whole style," Gyllenhaal told me at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival opening night premiere of Demolition....
