The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

The CSI franchise’s return to CBS is coming to an end as CBS on Friday opted not to renew CSI: Vegas for a fourth season.
On Saturday, CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows for 14 seasons across the original series and the followup, reflected on the cancellation.
“Each & every person involved with the making of this series brought their A game each & every day,” Helgenberger wrote on Instagram next to an on-set photo of the cast. “It was truly a pleasure & honor to work/play alongside such a fun & talented company of story tellers. Immeasurable thanks & gratitude to all for making this experience such a memorable ride. And to all the fans; we did it all for you.”
Lex Medlin, who, like Helgenberger, joined CSI: Vegas as a series regular in Season 2, posted a similar behind-the-scenes cast photo on Ig with a note to fans about the cancellation.

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.
In most current linear Nielsen viewership (2/12 to date), CSI: Vegas, which improved its time period, is at #21 among all non-sports broadcast programs with 6.234M viewers and So Help Me Todd at #22 with 6.224M. That is more...

It’s finally here. Variety joined the producers and contestants — including host Phil Keoghan — on a private charter to Puerto Vallerta to kick off “The Amazing Race” back in October 2022. There, embedded with the producers, we got to see some of the show’s hallmarks up close: The race starting line, on the beach in front of the Westin hotel; challenges involving Lucha Libre wrestlers and rodeo lassos; teammates already screaming at one another; camera operators — the true heroes of this production — keeping tabs on one another; and Keoghan doing his well-rehearsed standups introducing the country the show is visiting.
In an exciting first episode, we even got to see a medical emergency on one of the first tasks! (I hope they’re Ok. I think they are.) A lot more of that to come soon. But why did it take so long for this season to air? Read all...

The third season of “Hightown” will be its last, Starz announced on Tuesday.
The series, which launched in 2020, follows Jackie Quiñonez’s (Monica Raymund) daily struggle to stay sober while taking on the opioid crisis that is sweeping Cape Cod. All the while, the town faces a new deadly drug called Great White.
In this upcoming season, Starz teases “everyone will face a deep reckoning” when the bad guys and corruption arise from all sides. “Beliefs and loyalties will be tested, and Jackie will have to learn to stand by herself and for what she believes in,” reads the official description. Disney+ is calling off the hunt for more treasure.
The streamer has canceled its series National Treasure: Edge of History after a single season. The news comes more than two months after the 10-episode series wrapped in early February.
The show premiered in December 2022. Per usual with streaming series, detailed viewing figures aren’t available for Edge of History. It made Nielsen’s streaming rankings once during its run, tying for ninth place among original series for the week of Jan. 16-22. (It’s one of only two Disney+ original series not related to Marvel or Star Wars to make the rankings; The Santa Clauses is the other.)

CBS has given full season orders to its three freshman dramas — “East New York,” “So Help Me Todd,” and “Fire Country.”
“CBS is off to a tremendous start this season, said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “We are thrilled to have the three most watched new series, each with their own unique settings, characters and storylines. “We thank the talented casts, executive producers and their incredible writing and production teams for bringing these shows to life,” Kahl added. “Additional kudos to our CBS programming teams for shepherding these series to success. We are delighted to give them well deserved full season orders.”

CBS is wasting little time in locking down its trio of first-year scripted shows.
The network has extended the orders for East New York, Fire Country and So Help Me Todd after promising starts for all three. CBS is calling the extensions “full season orders,” though it hasn’t set episode counts for the trio. One of CBS’ hot new prospects for the fall — the CBS Studios/Bruckheimer Television drama “Fire Country” — got off to a solid start in its linear debut Friday. The show also helped boost CBS’ live streaming numbers compared to the comparable fall Friday premiere night in 2021.
“Fire Country,” an action-drama revolving around California firefighters, opened to 5.74 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour, according to Nielsen. The series built on its “S.W.A.T.” lead-in by a significant margin, as the sixth season premiere of the police drama brought in 4.6 million viewers at 8 p.m.
CBS capped the night with “Blue Bloods” grabbing 6.1 million viewers with its 13th season premiere at 10 p.m. CBS easily took Friday bragging rights in linear total viewers with an average of 5.5 million.
On live streaming platforms, “S.W.A.T” was up 4 in streams across Paramount+ and on CBS’ authenticated streaming partners, according to stats provided by CBS. “Fire Country...

After a decade-long absence from the world of yellow tape and bloody corpses, Marg Helgenberger reprised her role as Catherine Willows Thursday on CBS’ CSI: Vegas. It seems her character’s so-called “retirement” — which involved serving on the board of the Eclipse hotel and mentoring young women in forensic science — wasn’t that fulfilling, so the episode began with her asking Maxine (Paula Newsome) for her old gig back.
Fortunately, there were a couple of job openings since Gil (William Petersen) and Sara (Jorja Fox) were never replaced after leaving at the end of last season. Apparently, the Grissoms are currently on a boat in the Arctic circle but in real life, Petersen only signed for one year on CSI: Vegas while Fox chose not to return for a second season.

When Marg Helgenberger left the first iteration of CSI back in Season 12, she did it because, well, she needed the break. She was the original female lead opposite Billy Petersen. “I played the role for so long. It felt like it had become a part of my identity,” she told reporters Friday during CBS’ TCA panel.
So when the CSI: Vegas producers called Helgenberger to join the cast in Season 2, it took a minute before she could commit to stepping inside the yellow tape again.
“I wanted to make sure there was a reason Catherine would come back to the job,” explained Helgenberger, who modeled her character after a real-life forensics expert who stepped away from her job at age 50. “It’s a tough gig. Why would Catherine,...

Ever since it was announced that Max Thieriot would be headlining the new CBS drama Fire Country, there has been a question mark surrounding his future on Seal Team.
At the time of the latter's sixth season pickup, Thieriot had not closed a deal to return.
As a result, the Seal Team Season 5 finale left his character's future up in the air.
Thankfully, Thieriot closed a deal to return to the Paramount+ drama and has revealed that he is juggling the two shows pretty well.
“It’s obviously a juggle, but thankfully, we started Seal Team season six before we started shooting episode two of Fire Country, so I was able to work it right into the gap in between,” Thieriot said at TCA Friday.
“It’s been crazy, but life’s crazy. I got a couple of kids to throw in there and moving around up to Vancouver to shoot a TV show.

Exclusive: Michael Trucco (Midnight Mass) has joined the upcoming CBS drama series Fire Country as a recurring star.
He will play Vince’s (Billy Burke) brother Luke who is described as a charming Cal Fire Communications Director. He’s a schmoozy PR guy now, but he’s worked years in active fires, earning his fair share of scars. He’s career-driven, always looking for that next promotion, that next feather in his cap. His kidding, playful nature instantly endears him to almost everyone— except his older brother, Vince (a gruff fire chief). Luke will step in to help out his family, but the longer he sticks around, the more his “altruistic” motives will come into question.

It's been over a decade since Nicolas Cage last graced screens as "National Treasure"'s Declaration of Independence-stealing, president-kidnapping Benjamin Franklin Gates, but more thrill-seeking adventures are coming our way - this time, in the form of a new TV series! On Sept. 10, Disney+ unveiled the first full-length trailer for "National Treasure: Edge of History," and the show looks action-packed - plus, it includes plenty of nods to the original franchise.
While Cage isn't expected to appear in the series, the presence of his character, Ben Gates, is felt thanks to a fun Easter egg. In one scene from the trailer, a character discovers Benjamin Franklin's glasses - the same glasses Ben used in the 2004 "National Treasure." Additionally, the series will see Justin Bartha reprising the role of Riley.

In Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama feature film “American Gigolo,” Julian Kaye (played by Richard Gere) is a cocky playboy-for-hire who is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Showtime’s TV adaptation opens with the image of a very different man; 15 years removed and in prison for the crime, Julian (played by Jon Bernthal) is beaten down and broken. There are still remnants of the swanky persona he donned for clients and glossy Los Angeles life he lived — after all, the title theme is set to Blondie’s “Call Me” and features an easy riding Julian in his retro convertible — but Bernthal’s take on the character aims to undress his motivations and psyche, shedding the escort’s designer suits to uncover who Julian is and how he came to be.
“The movie is a great L.A. noir, but we knew nothing about Julian,” executive producer Jonathan Littman told TheWrap.

“American Gigolo,” Showtime’s “present-day reimagining” of Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama of the same name, first began as an idea gestating at Jerry Bruckheimer Television in 2014. According to executive producer Jonathan Littman, the show — which stars Jon Bernthal in the role originated by Richard Gere — once had Jared Leto attached to play the suave, high-end escort.
Not entirely a reboot and certainly not a remake, the series picks up 15 years after Julian Kaye (Bernthal) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Following his exoneration, Julian must once navigate the treacherous world of L.A. elites, all the while navigating who betrayed him in the first place.

Disney+’s “National Treasure” spinoff series introduced its newest treasure hunter in a teaser released at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and revealed that another familiar face would be returning.
Though the teaser is quick, there’s plenty to be seen. It opens in an office, where our new hero has a whole board set up with maps and information, presumably related to the next treasure that’s out in the world. Wearing a very Indiana Jones-esque hat and jacket, she takes off her hat to reveal long hair and looks straight into camera.
And so we meet Jess, the series’ heroine played by Lisette Olivera. According to the official “National Treasure: Edge of History” synopsis, she’s “a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.”

The life of an American Gigolo isn't as easy as one might think.
Forty-two years after Richard Gere made an impression with theater-goers as gigolo Julian Kaye, it's Jon Bernthal's time at the wheel.
American Gigolo is present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, but it's hard not to notice the similarities between Gere and Berenthal.
The American Gigolo has a specific look, and we can't wait to see what Bernthal does with the role.
The series follows Julian Kaye (Bernthal) after his wrongful conviction and release from 15 years in prison.
He'll be navigating his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him.
While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago.

After 25 years and more than 1,000 episodes, KristieAnne Reed has been promoted to CEO of Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Reed’s promotion follows Jonathan Littman’s departure as Bruckheimer TV chief after 25 years in the role. Reed has also logged more than a quarter-century with Bruckheimer, starting out on the feature side. She became a key player as the company roared into television in the early 2000s and formally shifted to Bruckheimer TV full-time in 2005.
“I’m excited for KristieAnne to be taking on this new position in leading our television department,” said Jerry Bruckheimer. “She has shown her dedication to this company and is an excellent producer.”
Reed’s long tenure with Bruckheimer TV will make for a smooth transition as Littman heads out to launch his own production banner. Littman praised her “unrelenting work ethic” and called her “my right-hand partner for 20 years.”

Jerry Bruckheimer Television veteran KristieAnne Reed has been promoted to CEO of the company from her current position as President. Reed, who is well liked in the creative community, has been tipped for the top job after serving as No.2 to Littman for almost two decades. She has been with The Bruckheimer Company for 25 years. Reed began at Jbtv in 2001, splitting her time between features and TV as she consulted on such hits as CSI, The Amazing Race, Without a Trace and Cold Case before officially joining Jbtv full time in 2005. Jonathan Littman, who has led Jerry Bruckheimer Television as President for the past 25 years after helping build the entity, has left his position to start his own production company.
“The last 25 years have been the ride of a lifetime and stepping away was a difficult decision. Having just celebrated our 25th anniversary and given the stability of our incredible executive team, this felt like the right time to step off and pursue a growing desire of mine to start my own company,” said Littman. “My gratitude to Jerry for all the support he has given me cannot be overstated and nothing will ever replicate the success we’ve had together. Leaving is bittersweet, so I’m glad I will continue to still be involved and working with Jerry, KristieAnne Reed and the Jbtv team a while longer.”
Reed is now the most senior executive at Jbtv. Littman’s replacement has not yet been named,...

Jonathan Littman is exiting as CEO of Jerry Bruckheimer Televison after a 25-year run with the company that included launching the “CSI” and “The Amazing Race” franchises.
Littman plans to segue into his own production company. The split came together amicably between longtime partners. He will remain involved with Bruckheimer TV’s current series including “CSI: Vegas” and “Amazing Race.”
Littman was a programming executive at the Fox network when Jerry Bruckheimer recruited him to expand his production company into TV. He’s well-regarded in the industry as a hands-on producer who led Bruckheimer TV to its mid-2000s peak when it had no less than 10 primetime series ordered for the 2005-2006 television season.
“The last 25 years have been the ride of a lifetime and stepping away was a difficult decision,” Littman said. “Having just celebrated our 25th anniversary and given the stability of our incredible executive team, this felt...

Jonathan Littman, who helped launch Jerry Bruckheimer Television and has led the prolific TV company for the past 25 years, most recently as CEO, is leaving and plans to launch his own production company. Under Littman’s exit agreement, he will stay involved in several of Jbtv’s series, including CSI: Vegas and The Amazing Race, which are the very first two Jbtv series (or a followup in the case of Vegas) to get on the air.
There is no word on replacement yet. Littman’s departure leaves KristieAnne Reed as the most senior executive at Jbtv.

Season 1 of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation sequel series opened a new chapter in Las Vegas – the city where it all began, introducing a serialized storytelling to the classic crime procedural drama. But broadcast TV still has its sway — just look at the list of top performing series on the largest SVOD platforms.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. This post will be updated throughout upfront week.

Exclusive: Tia Napolitano (Cruel Summer) has joined CBS’ newly picked up drama series Fire Country as executive producer and showrunner. Her hire was already in the works when the network yesterday gave an official series order to the buzzy pilot, executive produced by and starring Max Thieriot.
The project, from Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, is inspired by Thieriot’s experiences growing up in Northern California fire country and stems from an original idea by the actor, who also co-penned the story for the pilot with its writers, Tony Phelan and Joan Rater.
2022-23 CBS New Series
I hear there were no plans for Phelan and Rater, who are experienced showrunners, to stay on after the pilot in a hands-on capacity. The duo and Jbtv hand picked Napolitano who got her start as a writer under Phelan and Rater on Grey’s Anatomy and later worked on NBC’s Council of Dads,...

Exclusive Updated: Production on Showtime’s drama series American Gigolo has been paused again, this time for at least two weeks, as the series’ co-executive producer David Bar Katz has exited the Paramount TV Studios-produced series. His departure comes three weeks after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct and almost two weeks after The Offer executive producers Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg joined the series as consulting producers.
Toscano, a seasoned showrunner who ran The Offer, is said to have taken the reins of American Gigolo, with Rothberg providing support. The duo are expected to use the two weeks to work on prepping Episode 8, which is getting a script. The series, headlined by Jon Bernthal, originally had received a 10-episode order. I hear that plan has now changed, and the next episode to film,...
