BBC Studios Moves Showcase From Liverpool To London
BBC Studios is moving its annual showcase from Liverpool to London. Following almost a decade in the Merseyside city, the BBC’s commercial arm said it will bring a “fresh focus on upstream creative projects from across its range of production houses, labels and partners.” The move will position the Showcase directly agaainst the London Screenings, a similar set of events run by BBC Studios’ major distribution rivals such as All3Media International, Fremantle, eOne and Banijay Rights. BBC Studios CEO Global Distribution Rebecca Glashow said: “As the market, and our own business changes, so does Showcase. Expect to see our offer to customers evolve from a content juggernaut to a series of highly curated match-making opportunities that brings our most valued partners, producers and programmes together so the richest conversations can take place.” The Showcase started in Brighton in 1976 and brings together...

Does Willy Fog float your boat? Squidward ring your bell? Den Of Geek's hard-hitting journalistic investigation into cartoon chaps...
If you ask a guy 'Which cartoon character would you have sex with?' the answer is pretty much always 'Jessica Rabbit'. Occasionally they'll throw in 'Betty Rubble' as well, just to keep things interesting, but there are few straight men on the planet that wouldn't sell their soul just to have a sniff of Jessica's bra.
Straight women, however, don't really have that option. We don't have a staple go-to cartoon character for conversations like these. This must be why we just talk about shoes and commitment all the time.
To rectify this oversight, I've put together a list of potential cartoon gentsfor your perusal. Please note that I don't personally fancy any of these guys; that would be strange and wrong. Although if I'm pushed, we...

It's crazy to think now, 10 years on, that the reputation surrounding Doctor Who before the broadcast of series one episode 'Rose' - starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper - in 2005, was not what it is now.
In fact, in the pre-2005 Who landscape, it's safe to say that in terms of the general public and especially in the media, the series was regarded as a bad joke. And not even a very good bad joke at that.
The press just didn't take it seriously. In the aftermath of the initial 2003 announcement of the show's return, tabloids suggested that people like Paul Daniels and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen were in the running to be the new Doctor Who. Remember, they're not even actors.
But before another lazy journalist had the time to type "wobbly sets" for the 13th time that hour, a masterstroke was pulled - the BBC presented Christopher Eccleston as the...

Forget all the cha cha cha-ing on Strictly and Louis Walsh's silliness on X Factor. The No.1 reality TV show of 2013 was most definitely the Great British Bake Off.
Making stars of its contestants and pulling in stupendously large ratings, it is a pop culture phenomenon and every TV commissioner in the land is looking for the "next Bake Off". Here are just a few of the shows hoping to match the success of Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood in 2014.
The Great Interior Design Challenge
The Premise: We really need to find Britain's keenest amateur interior designers. Of course we do.
The Talent: Architecture and design critic for The Times Tom Dyckhoff leads the hunt and is joined by judges Daniel Hopwood, award-winning architect and interior designer, and Sophie Robinson, ex-editor of BBC Good Homes and Interior Designer. Niche is the word you're looking for.

Strictly Come Dancing doesn't just have to worry about The X Factor this year. It's also got to contend with ITV newcomer Stepping Out - an show with celebrities competing against each other as they learn to dance. Sound familiar?
Whether it's a Strictly rip-off or an evolution and improvement on a hit formula is open to debate, but ITV will be keeping everything crossed that its new entertainment series can knock the wind out of the BBC's Saturday night smash.
The first episode aired tonight on ITV, and with Davina McCall on hosting duties and Brian McFadden, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Denise Welch among the celebs taking part, the broadcaster will be hoping to make a dent in the ratings.

Strictly Come Dancing returns for its 11th series in September and the show is amazingly still in brilliant health. It topped the ratings in 2012 and the nation appears to have fallen back in love with a programme that looked like it was on the way out only a few years ago (that Chris Hollins and Ricky Whittle final... oh dear).
Over the last decade, the BBC and rival channels have attempted time and time again to cash in on Strictly-mania. Strictly Dance Fever (argh). DanceX (ugh). So You Think You Can Dance (huge in America, humongous flop in the UK). That Don't Stop Believing nonsense on Channel 5 (our eyes! Our eyes!).
Not deterred by this long list of lame imitations, ITV is having another crack this autumn. Stepping Out is essentially just Strictly, but without the professional dancers.

The Borgias season three finale will be its last ever episode on Showtime, and follow-up movie plans have also been scrapped...
As Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen repeatedly proved on Changing Rooms, recreating the opulence of Renaissance Italy doesn't come cheap (he was always over budget, that fluffy-haired scamp). That's one of the reasons Showtime has called time on pricy costume drama, The Borgias.
Currently in its third season, which concludes next week on Sunday the 16th of June, The Borgias will not be returning for a fourth run, nor will the proposed two-hour finale happen. Showrunner Neil Jordan has expressed regret for the series' early departure, saying "I would have loved to bring all the characters to a conclusion. All of the actors were heartbroken we couldn’t continue, and so was I."

London, October 22: Ikea, which helped a generation to furnish their homes on a tight budget, has ruined their love lives, it has been claimed.
TV presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen claims that the Swedish chain's designs are lethal for libidos.

"I find Ikea's attitude deeply unsexy.

Olivier wasn't just a great actor – he was a quintessentially modern performer, who cast a powerful spell over audiences
It's a shock to realise that few people under the age of 60 will ever have seen Laurence Olivier on stage. It came as an even greater shock to be told recently that many young actors have either scarcely heard of him, or routinely dismiss him as an "old ham". Nothing could be further from the truth. I first came under Olivier's spell when, as a 15-year-old schoolboy, I saw him play Malvolio, Macbeth and Titus Andronicus in a single Stratford season. He was not only a great actor. He was also, allowing for changes of style and taste, a quintessentially modern actor.
How to explain his power? I would seize first of all on the voice. What was initially a light tenor became, through training and application, a uniquely flexible instrument...

The 47-year-old singer is said to have signed on to join a host of other celebrities – including former ‘X Factor’ winner Joe McElderry – in the new series of the quirky talent show, which teaches pop stars how to sing opera.
According to the Daily Star newspaper, A-Ha singer Morten Harket is another musician reportedly willing to train his voice to be Pavarotti-perfect.
An insider said Joe was hoping the appearance would help boost his profile after recently being dropped by his recording label.

In this week’s column, James ponders the benefits of wearing a samurai outfit and cinema’s delusions of domestic bliss…
If, all of a sudden, I found that I had a lot of spare cash, it's most likely that I'd blow it all on a trip to Japan and a customised suit of samurai armour. I'd then be utterly skint again, but I wouldn't really care. I'd be armed and ready to take on the kamikaze debt collectors despatched to take me down and would look ultra-cool when I eventually committed hara-kiri.
I'd die broke, but I'd die the warrior's way observing the Bushido code instead of killing myself in some crappy kitchen sink manner, like hanging from a lampshade in a Blackpool bedsit.
(I have no idea how the unlikely scenario of sudden tremendous wealth would come about, by the way. Maybe one night I'll go sleepwalking and...

TV presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen was one of the first travellers to return home after flight restrictions caused by the volcanic ash cloud were ended by transport secretary Lord Adonis. The Popstar To Operastar judge praised his cabin crew on the flight, who he claimed were a reassuring presence during his five days stranded in Mauritius. He also compared the panic surrounding their return to TV series Challenge Anneka. "We've been very much the lucky ones. Because we were with a plane that was turned back it meant that we were still with our plane in Mauritius. We were all in the same boat," (more)...

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen once woke up in a ''bloodstained police van''. The TV interiors expert - who is known for his eccentric dress sense and floppy brown haircut - has revealed how he once woke up after a ''wild'' night out with friends to learn he had been picked up by policemen. He quipped: ''I'd been to this wild party, and awoke inside a bloodstained police van. I was actually famous at the time, so have no idea how it didn't get into one of those screeching celebrity magazines.'' This is not the only time the 44-year-old star has had an eventful drunken evening. Laurence and ..

Kym Marsh thinks Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen fancies her. The 'Coronation Street' actress is currently appearing in 'Popstar to Operastar' and believes one of the reasons judge Laurence criticises her is because it's his way of flirting. She said: ''Have you noticed just how rude judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is to me? I think he's flirting!'' Kym also admitted she may have to miss some rehearsal time for the show because it could clash with her filming schedule for 'Coronation Street'. She told New magazine: ''I really struggled to learn the French love song The Habanera from Carmen last week. ''I know Rolando Villazon was angry when ..

Vanessa White was voted off 'Popstar to Operastar' last night (22.01.10). The Saturdays singer became the second contestant to leave the show after her rendition of 'Summertime' failed to impress the judges. Vanessa lost out to Jimmy Osmond in the show's bottom two for eviction, after the judges - Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen , Meat Loaf, Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon -were deadlocked in their decision as to who to send home and the decision was put to the public vote. Vanessa White has become the second celebrity to be voted off ITV’s Popstar To Operastar.
The Saturday’s singer was berated on tonight’s show for missing a rehearsal this week and for singing an easy song badly.
Vanessa found herself in the bottom two for the second week running, this time competing with Jimmy Osmond who Rolando claimed had a tired voice tonight.
Meat Loaf and Katherine Jenkins voted to save Osmond, while Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Rolando Villazon voted to save White. This resulted in a tie breaker situation which resulted in Alan Titchmarsh reverting to the public vote results. Thankfully the public were no more impressed with Vanessa than we were and let’s just say she’ll be able to fully dedicate herself to The Saturdays once more.

Opera stars have spoken out about new ITV1 reality show Popstar To Operastar, accusing it of exploitation. The programme, which launched on Friday night, features eight pop singers learning how to perform arias for judges Katherine Jenkins, Rolando Villazon, Meat Loaf and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Royal and Welsh National soprano Rebecca Evans has claimed that the series gives a false impression of opera. "I think it's exploiting the world of opera," she told The Independent. "They will be calling more people opera singers when they are not opera singers - it's television gone mad. "Being an opera star is working in an opera house where you spend six weeks in a rehearsal room planning for the production. Opera singers are like athletes - you have to have stamina. It takes years of hard graft and dedication to become an opera (more)...

So we’re liveblogging tonight’s first ever Popstar To Operastar and if it wasn’t presented by Alan Titchmarsh we might actually be excited.
It’s an interesting concept though, they are aiming to turn former pop singers such as Kym Marsh and that Saturday’s girl into bona fide opera singers. The contestants are being mentored by the lovely Katherine Jenkins and the snakey eyebrowed Rolando Villazon and critiqued by Meat Loaf and Lawrence Le flouncy blouse (aka Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen).
The show kicks off with loads of VTs. Katherine and Rolando tell us how amazingly emotional Opera is and Meat Loaf boasts about all his experience.
Jimmy Osmond
It all runs on a bit and then Jimmy Osmond emerges, he’ll be singing that Cornetto song. He rehearses too much and tires out his vocal chords. Will he be ok singing tonight? Oh the drama!!
So he starts...

Interior design specialist Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen will appear on tonight’s Popstar To Opera Star as a critic and the TV star reveals that he intends to be fully honest with the contestants.
“I’ll be very honest with people,” admitted Laurence. “No matter how many screaming fans the pop stars have outside, what they’re singing is much more famous than they are. Away from their limos, they’ll have to realise that they are the junior partner to their arias.
“The contestants will have to understand that my first responsibility is to what they’re singing – I have to safeguard the music, not the personality. If I feel they’re trying to use some irritating pop techniques to distract us, I won’t be happy and I’ll say as much. I won’t be going in there sneering – I know they’ll work hard. But ultimately can they...

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has claimed that there is "nothing sexier than opera". The Classic FM DJ, who will be a critic on new ITV1 reality series Popstar To Operastar, also said that he was pleased the genre was being taken "out of the musty old drawer" and brought into the mainstream. "We're surrounded by opera the whole time," the former Changing Rooms presenter told ITV. "Opera's as much part of our lives as rock 'n' roll, but we don't always recognise it. "Opera always comes out on the biggest occasions, like Royal weddings and funerals. At the World Cup, we get the Three Tenors. 'Rule (more)...

Popstar to Operastar is a brand new series for ITV1 in which best-selling recording artists from the world of pop discover if they’ve got what it takes to perform as opera divas.
Mentored by classical hit-singer Katherine Jenkins and famed tenor Rolando Villazon, the eight contestants will be trained to perform world famous opera songs – many of them learning to not only sing in a completely different style, but also a completely different language than they are used to.
After their performances the pop stars will be critiqued by a panel made up of their mentors Katherine and Rolando and two critics, international award-winning rock musician Meat Loaf together with TV presenter and Classic FM radio host Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
Those taking part are:
Alex James, who found fame as the bassist in Blur. The band had five number one albums and in 1995 won four Brits breaking a record for...

If Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is ever in need of a challenging (and well-paid) interior design job then he might want to take a crack at Will Smith's plush Hollywood mansion. Sadly, we've checked every phone book going and there's no sign of a number for the Fresh Prince. Fortunately for everyone's favourite foppish Changing Rooms presenter, Digital Spy has discovered a way that he can track down Will with a trip through the jungle, an '80s popstar and a film called Six Degrees Of Separation! Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen to... Kerry Katona - Whatever you do, don't mention reality TV celebs to Laurence. Despite featuring in his own fly-on-the-wall show for Living, he's not too impressed by "famous for being famous" reality stars, singling out Kerry Katona as a prime offender. "I feel aggravated by these whitebait (more)...
