Sixty years ago, the 29,000-foot peak remained one of Earth’s greatest unconquered landmarks and had already claimed thirteen lives in previous ascent attempts. But after methodical team selection and training methods, British expedition member Edmund Hillary, a 33-year-old beekeeper, and brave mountain Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became partners on a dangerous challenge against the elements and fear.
Despite risking their lives with nascent technology and the ever-increasing threat of altitude sickness, the pair became the first men ever to stand atop the great peak, with their conquest announced in June 1953, in the days preceding the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The most successful documentary of all time in New Zealand, it’s not just a visually splendid piece but also a stirring meditation on human endurance, bravery and the indomitable will of nature.

As The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey dominates the box office, Ivan has a listen to Howard Shore's superb score...
Like a pair of old jeans that you hope still fit, returning to Middle-Earth after nine years was always going to be a daunting prospect. Thanks to its strange new 48fps appearance and a padded script that tried to turn it into a Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn't fit quite as comfortably as everyone hoped.
Not so for composer Howard Shore. Howard slips into those trousers with all the silky charm of Ian McKellen’s eyebrows, recapturing the mood of his original scores while also developing new themes; the characters are all new, but the backdrop feels the same.
And backdrops don't get much better than this. If Peter Jackson was bonkers to try and film Tolkien’s fantasy epic...

For filmgoers frustrated with a visionary filmmaker whose films’ quality provided diminishing returns as he became ever more prolific, Prometheus was anticipated as a welcome return to form. For those hungry for R-rated, thinking person’s science fiction, Prometheus provided a welcome respite from a summer promising mostly routine franchise continuations. For those who see the 1970s and 1980s as the height of modern Hollywood filmmaking, Prometheus promised a homecoming for a type of blockbuster that was long thought to be dead. Prometheus even beat out The Dark Knight Rises as the most anticipated summer film of 2012 on this very site. But then the reviews came in. And thus began the qualifying, criticizing, parsing out, hyperbolizing, dissecting, backlashing, and disappointed exhaling. There were many responses to Prometheus, but very few of them were the songs of praise that a film this hotly anticipated – and highly desired – by all means should have satisfyingly warranted. Part...
