Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel is a movie star. "The Marvels" has been cited as another sign of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fall from dominance, but everyone loves young actor Iman Vellani as this spunky heroine. /Film even named Kamala the best movie hero of 2023 and proclaimed her the future of the MCU.
Of course, Kamala comes from Marvel Comics and was co-created by G. Willow Wilson, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. The comics made a bizarre move of synergy in 2023; between Kamala's Disney+ show "Ms. Marvel" and the theatrical run of "The Marvels," she heroically dies in "Amazing Spider-Man" #26 (by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.), published in May 2023.
Wells' "Amazing Spider-Man" isn't exactly a fan-favorite (the stink of breaking up Peter and Mj has carried across his run) and this was a low point. It was the cheapest of cheap melodrama and Kamala perished while pulling guest star duty.

Tuesday’s Will Trent brought #AllTheFeels as the titular Gbi agent came face to face with his long-lost uncle, Antonio Miranda (played by American Fiction’s John Ortiz).
Lucy Morales’ younger brother, a professor by trade, was as warm and charismatic as promised. At first it seemed like he and Will had nothing in common — that was, until it was revealed that Antonio is dyslexic, just like his nephew.

Fans submitted over 1,300 of their favorite local music venues as part of our Hometowns of Consequence campaign. Now, we’ve narrowed it all down to our 20 regional finalists, with four beloved venues nominated in each of the five regions. All this week, we’ll be shining the spotlight on these beloved institutions of community and culture.
We’ve highlighted the Southeast finalists, and now we’re heading up 95 to celebrate the Northeast: Connecticut’s Park City Music Hall, New Jersey’s Crossroads, New York’s Rockwood Music Hall, and Pennsylvania’s Ardmore Music Hall.
We sent each venue a Q&a and asked for different team members to share their responses. The thinking here was to not only highlight the venues fans so dearly love and give those unfamiliar insight into the nominees, but to showcase the people that keep these sacred spaces alive, welcoming, and rocking.

July 19, 2003: It’s well after midnight in San Francisco, and the Exploding Hearts — Adam Cox, Terry Six, Matt Fitzgerald, and Jeremy Gage — are ready to play for a packed house at a bar called Thee Parkside. The show is a “last-minute thing,” Six, the band’s guitarist, remembers. They’d driven the 10 hours from Portland, Oregon, to play another local gig the night before, and when this spot opened up, they figured they’d stick around for one more. “I remember thinking, ‘We only have one fucking show,’” he says.

In 1940, Mlj Publishers had a problem. Their standout artist Jack Cole (best known as the creator of Plastic Man) had left the company, abandoning the hit series Pep Comics and its star the Comet. Without Cole’s pencils, the Comet didn’t pop in the same way, and the company needed something drastic to save its sales. So in Pep Comics #17, a thug guns the Comet down, inspiring his brother to become a new hero called the Hangman.
The first superhero death in comic books set the trend for all that followed. Pep killed off the Comet not for any story reason, but because they wanted to goose sales. And not only does his death launch another hero, but he doesn’t stay dead for good — Mlj (now Archie Comics) brought back the Comet in the 1960s and the 1980s, eventually licensing him to DC Comics.

Six years after the release of their last album, Queens of the Stone Age are back, this time “in Times New Roman,” or so the title of their upcoming eighth album claims. They’re heralding the release with “Emotion Sickness,” a typically muscular rocker with shades of Elo-style vocal harmonies, as frontman Josh Homme leads a round of “Baby don’t care for me, had to let her go.” A video for the song, directed by Liam Lynch, will debut Friday. In Times New Roman … will come out June 16.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn is a music connoisseur and personally selects the film's soundtracks. These needle drops blur the line of diegesis; Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) owns a Walkman (and later a Zune) and the songs in the first two movies are all from mixtapes gifted to him by his mother. "Guardians of the Galaxy" introduced us to the adult Quill by having him dance around the barren planet Morag, listening to "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone — perfectly capturing both Star-Lord's space cowboy persona and the film's retro musical taste.
Speaking to Absolute Radio, Gunn said he picks songs not because they're his personal favorites but because they fit the movie. "Vol. 2" features "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac, and the song's refrain of "keep us togethe," reflects the struggles of the Guardians to stay together despite their own flaws pushing them apart.

In a modern blockbuster landscape that's weirdly short on great soundtracks, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" albums have been a dependable source of musical excellence for nearly a decade now. The first film's soundtrack was a huge hit that was certified platinum, while the second received a gold certification and was among the most popular albums of the year. Songs including Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" and Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" exploded in popularity thanks to fans playing the catchy tunes on repeat.
The impressive, massive response to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" mixtapes hasn't been lost on writer-director James Gunn. In a recent press conference attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, Gunn spoke about the deliberation that goes into making the musical compilations that are all but guaranteed to give the artists they feature a popularity boost. Los Angeles, Feb 6 (Ians) On the eve of the 65th Grammy Awards, the music industry’s glitterati were jazzed for the chance to resume the tradition of coming together for a night of tributes, shout-outs and impressive displays of talent, reports ‘Variety’.
Here are a few things ‘Variety’ learned from Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy Gala at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday evening (U.S. Pacific Time).
* Swiss Beatz does a spot-on Davis impression.
* Atlantic Records’ Julie Greenwald is a “bad-ass bitch” in Cardi B’s estimation.
* Elvis Costello considers Nick Lowe “his hero”.
* Joni Mitchell digs the sound of Latto’s ‘Big Energy’.
* It’s still a ton of fun to sing along with Frankie Valli, especially when he’s backed by four Italian rockers with swagger to spare.
* Atlantic Records’ Craig Kallman spent his childhood studying the fine print of album credits, searching for ‘mythic’ names such as Ahmet Ertegun,...

There is something uneasy in the full moon — some eeriness, some mystery. A monthly reminder of our infinitesimal nature, the full moon inspired the poems of Hesiod, ancient Ojibwe lunar calendars, and still today, compels amateur astrologists to charge their Amazon-bought healing crystals beneath the new-age moonlight. Now it’s moved Matthew Houck, the artful folk-rocker known as Phosphorescent, to launch the Full Moon Project, a song series wherein each month, upon the full moon (the word “month,” accordingly, has its etymological roots in the Old English word “mōna,” or...

Last year, Elvis Costello received a letter from former bandmate Allan Mayes. For a one-hit-wonder, Tommy McLain admits he has few complaints.
Back in 1966, he’d climbed into the top 15 with a swamp-lounge version of Don Gibson’s “Sweet Dreams,” which showcased the Louisiana native’s tremulous voice. Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe were fans of his work; Joe Strummer cut a cover of “Before I Grow Too Old,” a Fats Domino B-side associated with McLain (Strummer’s version was called “Silver and Gold”). The drugs and alcohol were behind him, and decades later, McLain was gigging regularly in his home state.

Nick Lowe released “Don’t Be Nice to Me,” a single off his upcoming Ep Lay It on Me, out June 5th on Yep Roc Records.
Backed by the Nashville outfit Los Straitjackets, Lowe kicks off the track with lines that stand in stark contrast to the laidback guitar: “Don’t be nice to me/I’m undeserving of your kind attention.” Later, he takes the point even further: “When I find a rock big enough for me to crawl under/I’m gonna hang a sign outside to the world: ‘Stay away.

Usually, Peter Parker can't catch a break. Now it's more literal as he's set to star in a new series called Non-Stop Spider-Man.
Marvel never really needs an excuse to release another Spider-Man title. He’s their bread and butter. A lot of the time they can just do a regular Spider-Man series and just tack on a new adjective. Sometimes there will be a gimmick to it, like having him team up with other heroes, emphasis on his Avengers status, teaching at the X-Mansion, or having “mature” adventures that include the Absorbing Man turning into cocaine. But hey, he’s a great plug-and-play hero. You can have six Spider-Man titles a month if you force it enough.
Well, we’re getting another series and based purely on the creative team, it already sounds kickass. In June, we’re getting the first issue of Non-Stop Spider-Man, written...

Spider-Man is one of Marvel Comics’ most enduring heroes, first appearing in Amazing Fantasy #15 before going on to star in more than 800 issues of his own solo series across five volumes and almost six decades, the longest continuous tenure in the history of the company. Add to that the nearly one thousand issues of his Spectacular, Astonishing, Sensational and Unlimited variations, and it’s indisputable that Spider-Man is the most beloved resident of the House of Ideas.

I was always a Gwen Stacy guy. Sure, Mary Jane had all the great one liners and looked spectacular, but Gwen had the class and grace. Gwen also features heavily in one of the most notorious events in Spider-Man’s history, and for the longest time that is what she was remembered for. Which is a shame, because she was always a vibrant supporting cast member, and should be remembered as such. Later came all the clones and alternate universe Gwen’s, but Gage and Nauck don’t want you to focus on those, they want to take us back to the beginning. The real beginning. Not when Gwen’s story intersected with Pete’s, making her a character in his story, but when Peter Parker first became a part of her life, and a supporting character for her.

“I never should have written ‘Hip to be Square’ in the third-person,” says Huey Lewis of the News fame. The man who has sold more than 30 million records, spawning such ‘80s classics as “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “I Want a New Drug,” the Oscar-nominated “The Power of Love” and the song he’s fretting about now, a narrative lynchpin in both the book and film of Brett Easton Ellis/Mary Harron’s “American Psycho.” “People though I was singing about myself.”
The 69-year-old, longtime pal Jimmy Kimmel’s favorite rock star, is making a push for his underappreciated legacy with a pleasingly backward-looking blues/R&b, horns-heavy seven-song album, “Weather,” out on Feb. 14 via BMG Rights Management.
The album arrives at a bittersweet time, as Lewis has been suffering from a rare inner-ear disorder called Meniere’s Disease that causes his hearing to suddenly diminish, making it impossible for him to perform.

There’ve been a few different characters aside from Steve Rogers taking on the role of Captain America in the McU and the Marvel comics series, with the most notable being Anthony Mackie in The Falcon and the Winter Solder. While Chris Evans hasn’t ruled out returning to the part of Rogers, and a zombie Cap likely to happen in the What If…? Disney Plus series, one of the more exciting versions of the character has now been revealed by the House of Ideas as part of a celebration of 80 years of Marvel Comics.

Whenever Spider-Man 2099 is mentioned, I think it fills Marvel’s True Believers with the same sort of excitement that it does whenever Batman Beyond is brought up around DC fans. Those franchises may have some major differences, sure, but they both offer awesome takes on future iterations of two of the most iconic superheroes around. That said, I can see why each caught on, whereas others of the sort had failed.
In a nutshell, the “2099” initiative was launched by Marvel Comics back in the 1990s, and provided readers with fresh takes on characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Punisher and even Ghost Rider. Heck, I still have my copy of X-Men 2099 #1 bagged and boarded from when I was a kid!
As you may know, Marvel has revisited this concept off and on in the time since. The recent revival is especially appropriate, what with 2099 being 80 years from now.

A few years ago, Michaela Anne was at a roadhouse bar outside Joshua Tree, California, where she met a woman named Madeline, who told her she was a stripper. Flash forward to the winter of 2018, when Anne was spending time in the Arizona desert, writing songs for what would become her third solo record.

Talk to any performer, and they probably have a horror story about the time they died on stage. It was a bad crowd, bad night, bad material, the venue wasn’t right.
But now, there’s a book actually devoted to those who have, literally, died on stage. The Show Won’t Go On: The Most Shocking, Bizarre, and Historic Deaths of Performers Onstage (Chicago Review Press), by Jeff Abraham and Burt Kearns, is the first comprehensive study of onstage deaths. Unearthed details, little-known facts, and anecdotes reveal the truth about the final curtain call that ended many artists’ lives. The book arrives on Sept. 3.
The book chronicles Albert Brooks’s father, comedian Harry “Parkyakarkus” Einstein, to high-wire walker Karl Wallenda, rock star Dimebag Darrell Abbott, to rapper Jax the Axehandler. It also covers Tommy Cooper, who died on live television, and cult ukulele crooner Tiny Tim and J.I.
