Kate Middleton revealed she is undergoing cancer treatment. This statement, along with news King Charles is also battling the disease, shook the royal family’s foundation to its core. Fearing the worst for the institution, a royal commentator believes this diagnosis puts the clan in “end of days territory.”
Kate Middleton and King Charles battling cancer together, unprecedented in the royal family
Royal commentator Daniela Elser of News.com.au shared her thoughts regarding the unprecedented situation in which the House of Windsor currently finds itself. Two senior royals, both battling cancer at the same time, took them off the frontline for an undetermined amount of time.
“Welcome to the Doomsday Scenario. A moment that feels more like the plot of Robert Ludlum potboiler than what could end up being a true pivot point in the history of Crown Inc.,” Elser writes.

Matt Damon has already played Jason Bourne four times, most recently in the appropriately titled 2016 film “Jason Bourne,” but the 53-year-old actor is eager to return to the Robert Ludlum espionage franchise once again.
In a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Damon addressed the state of the “Bourne” franchise and his future involvement with it. He confirmed that “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger is in the early stages of developing a new entry in the series, and expressed openness to starring in the film if it materializes.
“There is a great director named Edward Berger,” Damon said. “[‘All Quiet on the Western Front’] is a fantastic film, and he’s wonderful and he said he had an idea. I would love to work with him, so he’s working on it. Look, I’m as anxious as you are to see if...

Say what you will about “Kingsman” (I’m a fan), but Matthew Vaughn’s 2014 spy movie built to an undeniably gonzo climax that took hours of careful tone-setting to earn and a wild imagination to execute. A quick, spoilery refresher for those of you who don’t share my sophisticated appreciation for pure cinema: A computer chip — implanted into the flesh of the rich and powerful in order to save them from a global culling — suddenly backfires, triggering hundreds or thousands of spectacular deaths around the planet that peak with then-president Barack Obama’s head erupting off his body in a rainbow gas explosion of cartoon death. It’s the kind of denouement that helps make sense of the silliness that led up to it, and recontextualizes the movie’s irreverent pastiche as a necessary path towards pop absurdism.

The Bourne Supremacy is the second film in the Jason Bourne series, which is based on the novels of the same name by Robert Ludlum. It is the sequel to the first film, called The Bourne Identity, and digs more into the backstory of the highly skilled former CIA assassin suffering from amnesia. The whole series is notable for its realistic and gritty action sequences — particularly the hand-to-hand combat and car chases. Unlike many other action films of its time, The Bourne Supremacy pioneered close-quarters combat and practical effects. While the direction of Paul Greengrass is worth mentioning, the...

Hollywood loves a franchise. Soon, our nostalgia obsessed monoculture will be treated to a "Harry Potter" reboot series and a definitely necessary "Twilight" revival. Now, we've learned that a new Jason Bourne movie is on the way from "All Quiet on the Western Front" director Edward Berger. As it stands, Berger is the only one attached to the project and it's still very early days. But the news of a potential new Bourne movie should be exciting for fans of the franchise and action movies in general. Either that, or they'll be dismayed that Universal is churning out yet another installment after 2016's disappointing "Jason Bourne" and 2012's exquisitely forgettable "The Bourne Legacy."
The Bourne movies are a great example of a studio squeezing every bit of life out of a franchise it possibly can. After "The Bourne Identity" successfully adapted Robert Ludlum's novels to the big screen, we...

Jason Bourne may be born again. Universal is developing a new take on the action franchise, with All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger leading the charge, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The new Bourne project is in the early stages of development. Matt Damon, who became an action star with the role in the early 2000s, could potentially become involved, but at this stage there is no script, and thus no star commitments. Deadline first reported the news.
Damon played Bourne in a trilogy of films from 2002-07, and then reprised the role 2016’s Jason Bourne. The features, based on the novels of late author Robert Ludlum, centered on a government operative who loses his memory and is hunted by his own country. Jeremy Renner also starred in a spinoff, 2012’s The Bourne Legacy.

If a movie franchise can last long enough, sooner or later, it will start eating its own tail. It’s a common grumble when talking about the big boys on the block, Star Wars and Star Trek. Neither feels like it’s willing to move on into the future, pulling fans back to earlier years and rebooting iconic characters in order to refresh—read: re-market—the stories fans love. But they’re not the only adopters of the technique; some franchises get downright sneaky about where in the timeline they’re going to take us next.
For example, little about the upcoming Saw X makes it clear to average moviegoers where the movie fits into the timeline. Franchise fans are probably aware that it’s a sequel-prequel timeline pretzel, fitting itself in between the original film and Saw II, and adding new details about Jigsaw’s obsession with the doctors that failed him.

One Piece, the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga, just wrapped its second week at No. 1 in Netflix’s Top 10 with another dominating performance internationally. And, in what is becoming a right of passage for every series that hits it big with young adults these days (like Netflix’s Wednesday), One Piece sparked a TikTok craze with tributes to its demented villain Buggy.
In an interview with Deadline, One Piece executive producers, Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, spoke about how the tide turned on TikTok, with skeptical fans of the manga and anime series embracing the live-action adaptation of the story about a young man and his pirate crew’s search for the fabled “One Piece” treasure.

Shaken, stirred, or even streamed, spy movies make up many of the most exciting, edge-of-your-seat stories the movies have to offer. From the harrowing heights of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise to the suave savvy of six James Bonds, espionage has become the thematic ground on which some of cinema’s most epic dramas, thrillers, and comedies are built. Even films primarily centered on other subject matter make frequent use of spy drama beats, proving it’s a bedrock source for onscreen entertainment.
The espionage genre is as old as filmmaking itself with silent spy movies set against the backdrop of World War I (1914’s “The German Spy Peril” is on YouTube) testing the medium’s limitations early in the 20th century. Literary works inspired many more of the spy movies to follow. Over the years, filmmakers have repeatedly adapted the works of John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Ian Fleming, and...

The scene where 2012’s The Bourne Legacy first comes truly alive features neither parkour or car chases; it also lacks fisticuffs or a single gunshot; heck, it doesn’t even have Matt Damon. To be sure, the fourth (and generally ignored) film in the Jason Bourne franchise has its fair share of death-defying stunts and white-knuckle action. However, the movie really clicks to life when a coterie of bureaucrats gather inside a windowless room, sharing hushed whispers.
The scene is dominated by who was intended to be the series’ new big heavy, Col. Eric Bryer (Edward Norton), who is revealed to be the Director of the National Research Assay Group. This is essentially a fictional version of Darpa, the research and development agency that operates within the the U.S. Department of Defense and is responsible for developing emerging technologies for military use. How many times does Jack Ryan have to save the world before his CIA bosses give him the benefit of the doubt? This question nagged at me through much of the white-knuckle ride of the disquieting third season of Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (as if there were another). The timely doomsday scenario imagines a rogue Russian cabal sowing international unrest through assassination, incursion and coup. How do we know it’s fiction? Because the Russian president in this story comes off as a peacenik by comparison. This long-dormant group, thought to have been eliminated in a 1969 massacre, has revived a nuclear scheme known as the Sokol Project — how very Robert Ludlum. Their ultimate goal: to revive the fearful specter of the Soviet Union as “the monster that kept the rest of the world up at night.” (Subtlety is not this series’ strong suit.) First stop: the Czech Republic,...

Wolverine #25 Writer: Benjamin Percy | Artist: Federico Vicentini | Colourist: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Cory Petit
For me this missed the mark and was a complete turnaround from last issue. It read like Percy didn’t want to tie into the Axe event any more than he did last time out. The story from beginning to end felt very much like a case of let’s get it over with and move on. Where it falls short is not drawing the reader into the event and not making it Axe accessible. As a reader, you get the impression this issue has no overall bearing on the events going on in the main Axe books. So why not just allow Percy not to tie in or just do a one-shot tie-in? A lot of things happen it seems without any real consequence as the story rips through a sequence of set pieces and ends with an anti-climax.

Who knew when the year began that a sequel to a 36-year-old movie starring its 60-year-old actor who headlined the original would be the box office champ so far this year? But “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, which was released Aug. 23 on digital formats while still flying high in theaters is not only the No. 1 film of the year with a staggering haul of 683.4 million domestically and 720 million overseas. And the acclaimed film didn’t even play in China or Russia. “Top Gun: Maverick” is also the biggest film of Cruise’s career which began in 1981 with Franco Zeffirelli’s “Endless Love.”

Like “Gone with the Wind,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and “The Help” before it, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is the adaptation of a native Southern female writer’s best-selling debut novel that sold millions. Its predecessors were box-office hits and Best Picture Oscar nominees, each winning in a least one major category. However, “Crawdads” may see a very different outcome: To understand the radical changes in the theatrical landscape, look no further than the best-selling adaptation.
At the upper reaches of industry projections, “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony) won’t provide memorable box office. Opening numbers range from 8 million to 18 million for the 25 million production, making it one of the lower opening weekends for a wide studio release this summer.
That’s also why it’s interesting: What’s it doing here? It’s the furthest thing from a franchise film. It’s also aimed at adults, skewed toward women.

The Bourne film franchise is a series of action thriller films based on the character Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin who suffers from amnesia.
The franchise began with the release of “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, followed by “The Bourne Supremacy” in 2004, then “The Bourne Ultimatum” in 2007, and “The Bourne Legacy” in 2012. In 2016, a fifth installment, titled Jason Bourne, was released.

Jason Bourne may have forgotten who he was for a spell, but at least his mad fighting skills were still intact while he figured it out. It's been 20 years since the release of The Bourne Identity, Matt Damon's first outing as the Robert Ludlum-crafted CIA assassin who's fished out of the Mediterranean Sea with amnesia and soon discovers there are all sorts of reasons why his former bosses would prefer he stay silent for good. Despite already being an Oscar-winning screenwriter and nominated actor for Good Will Hunting, it was his debut outing as the lean, mean Mini-driving machine that vaulted Damon to action-hero status and secured him a 1 billion franchise to call...

Doug Liman was so committed to getting an adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Identity made for the big screen, he crashed a wedding and later piloted a prop plane to make it happen.
“I spent years hitting brick walls,” says Liman, who broke out directing indie stunner Swingers in 1996 but had yet to make a major studio play. “I even crashed a wedding to accost Warner Bros. president Terry Semel because Warners had the rights at the time,” Liman tells THR. “It got to the point that if I mentioned Bourne Identity to my agent, he would groan and roll his eyes.”
Eventually, the rights reverted to Ludlum, so Liman went to Montana to meet with him. The director flew solo in a tiny propeller plane to get there. “I had just gotten a license to fly,” Liman recalls. “My arrival...

It’s sometimes fun to wonder if the reason February is the shortest month of the year is because folks want to get on to March as soon as possible. This month’s cold, damp, and often a 28-day excuse to stay inside. Even so, that doesn’t mean you have to be bored doing so!
Indeed, for those inclined to stay home but not interested in watching the Winter Olympics, Netflix has refilled its library with a variety of films. Admittedly, many of these lean on the action or broad comedy side, with romantic offerings being surprisingly slim for the month of Valentine’s Day, but if you’re in the mood for a cape or cowl, a terrifying chiller or something that will make you a giggler, then we have a list of solid offerings down below.

Paul Thomas Anderson grew up in the San Fernando Valley, which played an important role in his 1997 breakthrough film “Boogie Nights,” which looked at Valley’s porn industry during the ‘70s and 80s. In his new United Artists release “Licorice Pizza,” Anderson returns to the Sfv for a nostalgia-tinged comedy-of-age story set in 1973 starring Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim. Both young performers received strong notices with the L.A. Times’ Justin Chang declaring Haim as the true star of “this boisterous, bighearted movie and its raison d’être.” And Bradley Cooper has earned positive notices for his funny turn as hairdresser turned film producer Jon Peters, who ironically was a producer on Cooper’s 2018 “A Star is Born.”
So, what was the world like in 1973? It was the year of Watergate, Roe Vs. Wade and “The Exorcist” hitting the big screen. Let’s travel back almost half a century to look at the top films,...

Director Doug Liman likes that there’s so much buzz about space these days and takes a teensy part of the credit after news (broken by Deadline) last year that he plans to shoot a film up there with Tom Cruise in collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and NASA.
“It’s good. If we can inspire kids to study science. I grew up dreaming about going into space,” said Liman, who also directed Cruise on American Made and Edge of Tomorrow and has helmed hits from Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity to Go and Swingers. He spoke Tuesday on a sunny roof deck at Spring Studios in downtown Manhattan during a Directors Talk Q&a at the Tribeca Festival.
Most recently, Jeff Bezos’ rocket company Blue Origin was in the news for auctioning off a spot on its first manned spaceflight for $28 million. Bezos and his brother will also ride.

Paramount plans to reinvent the Transformers films with two new entries by James Vanderbilt and Joby Harold respectively.
Transformers has been an obvious boon to Paramount Pictures, which launched its films based on the popular Hasbro Toys franchise back in 2007, since tallying six entries totaling $4.84 billion worldwide. However, the franchise is on the cusp of a necessary evolution to the tastes and sensibilities of today’s audiences; something that the studio will attempt to accomplish with two new films.
Paramount is now in active development with two separate Transformers film scripts, one by James Vanderbilt, the other by Joby Harold, as Variety reports. While no details were provided on the new scripts, the perceived objective here is to revamp the film franchise into something that’s both budgetarily prudent and more pathos-packed; something that the most recent film, 2018 character-centric spinoff Bumblebee, accomplished with the lowest budget in franchise history at $135 million,...

Treadstone executive producer Ben Smith joins The Fourth Wall podcast to talk about the USA Network’s Bourne prequel series.
This interview is spoiler-free for Treadstone, which premieres on October 15, 2019 on the USA Network.
With the prevalence of “cinematic universes” these days, it’s no surprise that Universal has sought to create a shared world for the Jason Bourne saga with upcoming movies starring Jeremy Renner and Dwayne Johnson. But Ben Smith, who has produced a number of Robert Ludlum adaptations for the theater, has now branched into television with a new Bourne prequel for Ucp on the USA Network entitled Treadstone. Smith talked to us for The Fourth Wall podcast about the series’ premise, which explores the origins of the sleeper assassin program that began with The Bourne Identity.

“Treadstone,” which begins in East Berlin in 1973 and zooms ahead to multiple locations in the present day, is, we’re told in its credits, “based on an organization from the Bourne series of novels by Robert Ludlum.” The description seems apt, in its clunky way. The Treadstone organization, which trains people to be supersoldiers and to keep their tactical knowledge subconsciously buried, is an element of Jason Bourne’s story now surgically cut off from the context and narrative richness of a good novel or film. And “Treadstone” feels, too, based on an organization and not a novel or film in its rigorous movement between plotlines, something that comes to feel less like narrative balance and more like mandated check-ins on a show that hasn’t yet decided what it wants to be about.
These plotlines are generally similar enough: A person, somewhere, comes to realize the powers they contain within them,...

The Boys are back to work – and business is booming. Filming is now underway in Toronto for Season 2 of the Amazon Original series The Boys, the ultra-violent and proudly pervy superhero drama that premiered on Amazon Prime on July 26 and already ranks as the digital platform’s fastest breakout ever and its best-reviewed original series to date.
The show’s fan following has already put The Boys at No 39 on IMDb’s list of television’s all-time best series.
The series adapts the comics series (2006-2012) by writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson and it’s part of a wave of subversive superhero screen projects that flip the script on conventional superhero fare by making the costumed crusaders intriguingly dysfunctional.

Exclusive Preview: Superheroes tend to get most of the attention in the comic book industry (maybe it’s all those bright red capes), but for 13 years now writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips have been the prolific vanguards of noir storytelling while producing a truly killer stack of bestselling crime comics, including Criminal, Fatale, Kill or Be Killed and The Fade Out.
Brubaker & Phillips make a return to the scene of their earliest crime together with issue No. 5 of their new monthly Criminal series for Image Comics. The issue hits stores this week with the story called “The Night of the Hunter,” and we have an exclusive excerpt below. The Night of the Hunter kicks off the Criminal: Cruel Summer story arc, which will be the longest in the brand’s illustrious history, which dates back to October 2006.
Instead of chronicling a central, linear story, Criminal has more of a mosaic approach.

Le professionnel is essentially a 1981 version of The Bourne Identity, oddly enough, with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the lead role. Robert Ludlum's novel was brand new at the tune, but Le prof is based on a 1976 book by Patrick Alexander that Ludlum, I'm guessing, may have read.Sent to assassinate an African despot, Jpb is betrayed by his own people, brainwashed, and jailed in a hellish prison camp, but escapes after two years, returns to Paris and announces his determination to finish the mission (with the secret service no longer want carried out) when the despot is on a state visit to the French capital. So, it's called The Professional and it's about a crazy but ruthless state killer gone rogue, and it's shot by Melville's cameraman, Henri Decae. But at some point, somebody decided it needed some yucks also, so Belmondo gets to grin a lot and make quips in a Roger Moore style.

USA Network has ordered the drama “Treadstone” straight to series, Variety has learned.
The series, which was originally ordered to pilot back in April, centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. The series will go into production in 2019.
“As the #1 cable entertainment network for the past 12 years, USA Network is delivering a dynamic lineup of big, bold programming – and what could be bigger and bolder than the Treadstone mythology?” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
“Treadstone” is produced by Universal Cable Productions. The series is written and executive produced by Tim Kring. Ramin Bahrani will direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer.
