“Isn’t it fabulous?!”
It’s an unseasonably warm fall afternoon in New York City, and Keli Goff is walking THR through the pieces in her “cl-office,” a unit in her Manhattan apartment building that she has fashioned into a combined closet and office. An accomplished journalist and screenwriter, Goff has outfitted it with standard office necessities. But the rest of the space is brimming with her extensive vintage clothing collection — namely, more than 100 pieces by Black American designers. The “fabulous” one Goff is telling us about is a breezy leopard-print jumpsuit by Patrick Kelly. Known for bold, colorful designs worn by such muses as Pat Cleveland and Grace Jones, the designer, who died in 1990 at age 35, worked in Atlanta and New York before moving to Paris in 1980, becoming the first American designer admitted to the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter, the governing body of the French ready-to-wear industry. “ think it...

Donyale Luna: Supermodel director Nailah Jefferson with Anne-Katrin Titze on Beyoncé’s 2018 Vogue cover, shot by Tyler Mitchell: “It was the first Vogue cover that had ever been shot by a Black photographer.”
“My name is Luna, I come from the moon” is how Donyale Luna used to introduce herself. It looks as though the memory of the supermodel’s brief, brimful life had gone back up to the heavens with her for decades. Nailah Jefferson’s insightful and revealing documentary ameliorates this and celebrates an extraordinary woman’s journey. William Klein’s 1966 fashion film Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?, Federico Fellini’s Satyricon, a Vogue cover and one for Harper’s Bazaar, collaborations with Richard Avedon and David Bailey (interviewed here), images that show her with Salvador Dali and Groucho Marx, relationships with The Rolling Stone’s Brian Jones and Klaus Kinski, Andy Warhol bondings, and and and...

When Bethann Hardison co-created the Black Girls Coalition in 1988 — a group formed with Iman to shine a spotlight on women of color in modeling — she didn’t know she was laying the foundation for a discussion about diversity in fashion that would continue for decades.
“I just wanted to celebrate Black models. I wanted them to see each other,” says Hardison, the subject of the new documentary Invisible Beauty. Co-directed by Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I, Halston) and Hardison and in theaters Sept. 15, the film details the fashion industry’s history of racial exclusion and her unflagging efforts over decades to push for progress. One minute into the film, actress Tracee Ellis Ross calls Hardison the “godmother of fashion.”
Bethann Hardison
The title Invisible Beauty is a nod to Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man, in which an unnamed Black man narrates what life is like for African Americans in the South.

"Where are you from?" "My name is Luna. I'm from the Moon." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Donyale Luna: Super Model, from filmmaker Nailah Jefferson. This premiered at the 2023 American Black Film Festival earlier this year, and will be out for streaming to watch on Max in September. The film explores the amazing life & career of Donyale Luna, as one of the first Black models to appear on the cover of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in Europe. Originally born as Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, Michigan, she made the cover of the British edition of Vogue in March 1966. Luna entered modeling in a period that favored "white passing models" and has been described as "the first Black model who really began to change things; to enable more diverse beauty paradigms to break through." She appeared on 11 fashion magazine covers between 1965 and 1975. This seems like...

HBO has debuted the first trailer for Donyale Luna: Supermodel, a documentary exploring the life, career and legacy of one of the first Black models to grace the cover of a Vogue magazine.
Often considered the “first Black supermodel,” Luna — who died in 1979 at the age of 33 — broke ground at a time when it was not only still rare to see Black women who weren’t white-passing in fashion but Black women on major magazine covers at all. Through her heyday in the late ’60s and early ’70s, Luna challenged the modeling world’s conventions and made history by becoming the first Black woman on the covers of both Harper’s Bazaar in 1965 and British Vogue in 1966.
“She broke the mold of using Black models in the ’60s,” one talking head can be heard saying in the more than two-minute trailer.

Skidoo
Written by Doran William Cannon
Directed by Otto Preminger
USA, 1968
Of the nearly 70 films I’ve written about in this column, I would whole-heartedly recommend each without reservation, to not only watch, but to spend good money on. With 1968′s Skidoo, out now on a new Olive Films Blu-ray, I’m breaking that tradition. I wouldn’t suggest anyone purchase this film, though everyone should see it. This is a most unusual, absolutely indefinable, wholly unique motion picture.
I initially viewed Skidoo on the sole basis of its starring Alexandra Hay, who I’ve been smitten with since first seeing her in Jacques Demy’s Model Shop, released the following year. On this point, Skidoo succeeds. Hay is a delightful beauty, charming in a way that is very much of the era. Admittedly unfamiliar with her biography, I can’t imagine why she didn’t have more of a career.

Thank goodness it only took four episodes to reveal Warlow's identity: it's Ben! Was anyone that surprised? Probably not. In fact, we discussed last week how there's no way a seemingly perfect guy can waltz into Sookie's life and actually be perfect. Instead he's the vampire who killed her parents and she is sworn to, which is sort of romantic in a way, right?
Fortunately she doesn't think so either, and planned a perfectly tasty silver-filled feast to try to kill him once she connected the dots that Ben is actually the vampire who's tormenting her. While she used a little Nancy Drew detective skills to figure it out, Jason realized in a slightly less glamorous way. "True Blood" Season 6 finally hit its stride with this week's episode, "The Sun." While many complained in previous seasons about the HBO series' tendency to deviate into too many storylines, Season 6 is relatively streamlined in comparison and it's definitely for the better. It's easy to see how the mystery surrounding the vampire Warlow will tie together Sookie, Bill, Jason, Eric, Pam and Jessica's storylines, while Alcide, Sam and the rest of the shape-shifting supe population will be faced with whether to come out to the world or remain hidden.
In "The Sun," the audience learns that Warlow is not the same person as Rutger Hauer's character who was driving Jason around in the season's premiere -- or is he? "True Blood" has pulled plenty of fast ones on us in the past, and it wouldn't be too surprising if Hauer's character ended up not being Sookie and Jason's grandfather like he claims.

Spanish film director whose 'Iberian passion' trilogy began with Jamon Jamon
For 39 years, under General Francisco Franco's repressive regime, it was almost impossible for Spain to create a vibrant film industry and for talented film-makers to express themselves freely. However, after the death of the Generalissimo in 1975, there was a burst of creativity, with Pedro Almodóvar paving the way for directors such as Bigas Luna, who has died of cancer aged 67.
After some years as a conceptual artist who experimented with new audio-visual media, Luna became known internationally for his "Iberian passion" feature film trilogy: Jamon Jamon (1992), Golden Balls (1993) and The Tit and the Moon (1994), which explored the darkest depths of eroticism and stereotypical Spanish machismo. The first film introduced Penélope Cruz to audiences and launched Javier Bardem as the embodiment of the Spanish stud. "I owe my career to Bigas Luna," Bardem said in 2001.
