One of the BBC’s most established sports pundits, Ian Wright, has revealed he will be leaving his job on Match of the Day at the end of this year’s football season.
His decision comes after 27 years serving as one of the knowledgeable former football players turned pundits on the flagship BBC sports show.
Wright, who has turned 60 this year, made his announcement on social media, saying:
“After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I’ll be stepping back from BBC Motd at the end of this season.
“I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world.”
“Anyone that knows my story knows how much the show has meant to me since I was young boy. Motd is my Holy Grail.

The BBC has played down the potency of its own output in a legal battle with presenter Samira Ahmed, who is seeking £693,245 in lost earnings at an employment tribunal over equal pay.
In the first case of its kind since the BBC was embroiled in a gender pay scandal, Ahmed is arguing that she was paid significantly less than male presenter Jeremy Vine for hosting similar shows.
Ahmed hosts Newswatch, a BBC News channel show in which viewer feedback on the BBC’s news coverage is discussed. She was paid £440 an episode when she joined the show in 2012, rising to £465 in 2015.
Vine hosted Points of View for a decade up to 2018 — another show inviting audience feedback on BBC programming. He was paid £3,000 an episode, a figure that was more than halved to £1,300 in 2018.
In a summary of the BBC’s defense, made available on Wednesday at the Central London Employment Tribunal,...

Solid Snake Aka the deadliest pensioner in gaming.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots takes the player to numerous countries across the globe in a story that calls upon decades of lore and features flashbacks to previous games in the series. It forms the final, emotional journey for one of the most beloved heroes in video gaming as an aged, weary Solid Snake is called out of retirement to assassinate his nemesis, Liquid Ocelot, and attempt to bring peace to a near future filled with ceaseless war. It’s a journey that begins with an old man looking to take care of one final loose end, and ends by changing both Snake’s, and the player’s, perspective on the whole series.
Given the open nature of Metal Gear Solid 4, and to a much greater extent, Ground Zeroes, it’s easy to forget that the series was once confined to corridors.

Sean Connery returns to play James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. It is not 007's finest outing.
A strange offering this one, sandwiched between two considerably more significant films. Undoubtedly a lightweight outing, despite featuring a heavyweight star in more ways than one. The cartoonish tone is sharpened by lashings of violence and a surprisingly high body count. A moribund Connery and garish Las Vegas add to the sense of a series going to seed. Implausibilities abound through Diamonds Are Forever. Yet its dysfunctional parts create a film that, while far from a classic, has a certain battered panache – and a wry smile throughout. I rather like it.
The Villain: Like buses, Blofelds come in threes. After Donald and Telly, here’s Charles – utterly estranged from his predecessors in appearance and manner. This Blofeld has hair, a penchant for crossdressing and a rather winning air of bonhomie. Plus there’s three of him.

ITV is expected to place a significant bid for the Premier League highlights rights for the 2016-19 seasons in the New Year, putting the future of Match of the Day in doubt.
ITV has recently lost the rights to Champions League, Europa League and Fa Cup football, meaning that they potentially have the extra budget to outmaneuver the BBC in the auction.
The 2016-19 season package is expected to sell for more than the £180 million paid by the BBC last time.
ITV has a team of presenters and pundits, such as Adrian Chiles and Lee Dixon, ready to take on the coverage if they snatch the rights from the BBC.
Match of the Day recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on the BBC, and it remains a ratings hit for the corporation with Gary Lineker as its main host.
However, it wouldn't be the first time that the BBC has lost the rights to ITV.

Countdown celebrates its 6,000th show today (September 5) by receiving an award from Guinness World Records.
The Channel 4 programme has aired the most series for a TV game show, and is awarded the prize from an official Guinness World Records adjudicator.
Countdown was the first ever show broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched in November 1982, and has gone on to air 70 series.
Presenter Nick Hewer said: "It is a huge honour to front Countdown, now recognised by Guinness World Records for its longevity.
"Having 32 years under its belt, I am only a novice, coming up to three years on the show. But, I and the whole team, am incredibly proud to be part of such a durable and intelligent format that relies on intellect rather than prize money."
Rachel Riley added: "I'm proud to be part of such a great show that not only has its place in British psyche...

Match of the Day celebrates its 50th anniversary this week, after launching back in August 1964 with a game between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Half a century later, after five decades of triumph and tragedy for football fans across the country, the UK's flagship football programme is still going strong and remains as iconic as ever.
To celebrate this, Digital Spy has collated its own Premier League table of Motd icons from past and present. Using a (likely contentious) points system based around football knowledge, longevity on the show and a certain 'magic factor' that makes them a warm presence on our screens, this is our just-for-fun chart of the biggest names in its history.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but ITV aren't as bad as everyone makes out when it comes to live football. Hear me out - it's not as crazy as it may first sound.
For years, I've been baffled that anyone would choose to watch ITV over BBC One if given the choice. However, as this year's World Cup has proved so far, both channels have had their fair share of gaffes and errors.
The BBC is pretty stellar when it comes to live tennis, snooker, athletics and many other sports, and Match of the Day is clearly light years ahead of ITV's The Premiership, but has ITV suddenly gained back some ground this year?
There's probably two words that you're thinking which throws out my argument: Adrian Chiles. The former BBC man has become the face of ITV football, possibly because they're stuck with him and don't know where to plonk him.

Alan Hansen bid farewell to the Match of the Day studio last night as he called time on the 2013/14 Premier League season and also his own career at the BBC.
Hansen has been one of the key faces of BBC Football for 22 years, but after one more World Cup in Brazil, the former Liverpool captain will be hanging up his punditry boots for good.
He managed to turn "shocking defending" into a catchphrase and his line, "you can't win anything with kids" - referring to a Manchester United team who went on to win the double in 1995 - still haunts him to this day.
But Hansen hasn't been universally liked as a pundit for many years. From criticisms about his hefty pay packet, to his partnership on the Match of the Day panel with Alan Shearer, there are plenty of football fans who consider him a crossed-legged cliché machine and uninspiring.

Gary Lineker has defended Match of the Day from criticism of its football analysis and punditry.
The former England striker has presented the highlights show since Des Lynam's departure in 1999. It has in recent years been criticised by Stan Collymore and others for a lack of quality in its analysis.
"It's comfortably the most difficult thing in terms of football punditry on television," Lineker told Digital Spy.
"It's the most-watched show for a start - it's not an anoraky kind of show, we don't have hours.

In a totally left field and completely unpredictable choice, 67 year old Nick Hewer has been hired as the new permanent presenter of Channel 4′s daytime gameshow Countdown.
Lord Alan Sugar’s long-term adviser and who in recent years has rose to fame on television with his dry wit, his acerbic putdowns, his unique physical ability to look knowledgeable, bemused and excitable all in one expression as Sugar’s sidekick on The Apprentice, will make his first on-air appearance on January 9th. His first run of episodes will be shot next month.

Des Lynam has defended Ortis Deley following his shaky performance on Channel 4's athletics coverage.
