The next iteration of The Office is coming together.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the new take on the beloved NBC Steve Carell comedy has cast the first two members of what will be the ensemble comedy with Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) and Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) becoming the first two to join the cast of the potential series.
Reps for Universal Television, which is producing the updated take from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), declined to comment as the details surrounding the project remain closely guarded. A platform for the project has not yet been determined as sources say Daniels and the studio want to make sure the take is right before setting it up at a network/streamer. ‘The Office’: Domhnall Gleeson & ‘White Lotus’s Sabrina Impacciatore Cast In New Greg Daniels Comedy
The potential new Greg Daniels and Michael Koman comedy series in The Office universe has locked in its first two stars: Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient) and Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus), who will be part of an ensemble, sources close to production tell Deadline. Details regarding their roles are under wraps. The Office studio Universal Television declined to comment, other than to confirm that the project remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, Daniels opened up a development room to explore ideas for a follow-up series to the Emmy-winning The Office. The prospective new series, which is not a reboot, is said to be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Even though Seinfeld is one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, it is also known as one of the most controversial. Having been created decades ago, it is only natural that the series was a product of its time, and its portrayal of certain minorities would not be up to the standards that Hollywood is held to today.
A still from Seinfeld finale (1998)
However, during its run, the series took its jokes so far that it even sparked controversy among audiences three decades ago. Casual racism was often used as the punch line in the series, with episodes like The Soup Nazi and The Chinese Restaurant being excellent examples.

Talks continued but no sign of a Friday afternoon breakthrough.
Deadline understands that the WGA met once again with the AMPTP earlier today, the fourth time the two sides have sat down this week to try and hammer out a deal that would end the writers strike.
The latest discussion between the writers guild and the AMPTP comes after studio CEOs once again spoke amongst themselves as the likes of Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Disney’s Dana Walden become more directly involved in the process. The bosses are trying to determine what their next step is in these negotiations as they try and find concessions for the writers.
Earlier this week, the AMPTP made another offer to the writers.
Sources tell Deadline that the rumors that a deal is done is not true, coming after many in town were starting to express optimism that a major breakthrough had been made.

“I would say ‘Veep’ absolutely put us on a path toward this project,” reflects Peter Huyck on how the Emmy-winning HBO political satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus led him and his creative partner Alex Gregory to their subsequent project, the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers.” Together, the duo created, executive produced, and wrote all five episodes of this retelling of Watergate, which was brought to them by David Bernad. He thought there was a “Coen brothers dark comedy” in the material and wanted the “Veep” writers to offer a “new take” on the infamous D.C. scandal. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Gregory points not only to “Veep,” but also to that show’s creator Armando Iannucci and his film “The Death of Stalin” as a major source of inspiration. “That was a horrific episode about a genocidal maniac, and it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen,...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with HBO, for this edition, we look at how the team behind “White House Plumbers” found a way to marry comedy, history, and the paranoid atmosphere of 1970s political thrillers.
There’s a scene in Episode 4 of “White House Plumbers” where Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson), one of the masterminds behind the Watergate break-in, receives a call from reporter Bob Woodward. It’s the other side of the exact phone call dramatized from Woodward’s perspective in “All the President’s Men” — the 1976 movie about how Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s reporting helped bring down Hunt, his partner-in-crime G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), and the Nixon White House.

During the early days of the 2007-08 writers strike, even after pens went down, many showrunners were still at work. They weren’t writing, but they were handling other aspects of production as cameras continued to roll on preexisting scripts. Eventually, they realized that showrunners might take themselves out of writing, but there’s no way to take writing out of showrunner duties.
“It’s obviously part of the storytelling process, because you need a showrunner to keep a sense of the overall story,” says one high-profile writer-producer. “Every decision you’re making, from a craft services
decision to a costume decision, is something only you can make because you’re putting it into a whole story. There’s no part of my job that isn’t storytelling.”

Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's "White House Plumbers" started out as a broadly comedic dramatization of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President's bunglingly criminal efforts, but as the miniseries has dealt with the legitimately tragic dimensions of this inept operation, the laughs have grown fewer and fewer. Indeed, this week's episode, which concludes with the jarring crash of United Airlines Flight 553, occasionally takes on the eerie tone of Alan J. Pakula's "All the President's Men."
The Watergate break-in was so poorly orchestrated that it casts into doubt the numerous conspiracy theories that grew up around it or were drawn into it. Given E. Howard Hunt's CIA background and involvement in the Bay of Pigs, Gregory and Huyck have entertained his alleged connection to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This is intriguing, but, again, if Hunt was as much of an oaf as he...

The level of solidarity among striking WGA writers has been a powerful force during these first few weeks of the writers strike. Seeing it in action on picket lines is a good reminder for the industry at large that there’s a special camaraderie among those who know what it’s like to stare at a blank screen, search for inspiration and then type away at draft after draft to get the words just right.
That’s true for novelists as much as it is for screenwriters. Often those are one and the same — and because we live in an age where pre-sold IP usually makes it easier to sell a TV project, there have never been more series based on books than there are right now.

White House Plumbers shouldn’t require a spoiler warning. The HBO miniseries is about the Watergate scandal. But, since it’s told from the perspective of Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the five-episode satirical drama covers a ton of ground that the average person is likely coming upon for the first time.
“There are a lot of people who know Nixon resigned, maybe they’ve heard the word Watergate, maybe they only know ‘gate,’ like they’ve seen this-gate and that-gate. There’s an opportunity here to just let people know what President Nixon did. It’s a story where, maybe it’s been long enough that it’s time to remind people. But now, let’s go one step further,” said David Mandel, who directed all five episodes and is an executive producer alongside the show’s creators and writers,...

“I didn’t think anyone would ever do a Watergate series, so I never thought to ask,” reflects David Mandel about one of the defining moments in American political history. But as it turns out, he recalls, “One day, I found out there was a Watergate series and the next thing I knew I was the director of it.” The Emmy Award-winning executive producer credits his longtime home HBO for backing the series “White House Plumbers” because “only they would make this show about two very dangerous guys in the 1970s who went to work for the President to basically break the law in the name of the law.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
While Mandel says he doesn’t “want anybody sympathizing” with the two criminals who masterminded the infamous Watergate break-ins — E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) — he does hope the series helps viewers understand them.

Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's HBO miniseries "White House Plumbers" is a tonally audacious, behind-the-bungling tale of the men who botched the Watergate break-in and set in motion the demise of Richard M. Nixon's presidency. The series is focused on the two "masterminds" of the errant operation: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Paul Theroux). The five-episode series, directed by David Mandel (the former showrunner of "Veep"), is both broadly comedic and bruisingly tragic, as it must be.
What these men and their inept coconspirators carried out is easily the most egregious own-goal in the history of American politics. The limited series race at the Emmys is starting to heat up with shining new entries, established early shows and anticipated spring premieres. With its performance at the television precursor awards, Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently Gold Derby’s frontrunner for Best Limited Series, but the odds are consistently shifting with the release of newer shows, one of the standouts being fellow Netflix entry “Beef,” which could be poised for an upset.
As of this writing, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, the Ryan Murphy anthology series still holds strong at the top with 39/10 odds, having done well with nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild of America Awards. “Monster’s” key components are its actors, with Evan Peters winning the lead Globe and Niecy Nash-Betts triumphing at the Critics Choice Awards in the supporting category, and both nabbed SAG Award nominations.

Showrunners and producers are starting to feel the heat from the WGA strike, as the studios and networks are trying to enforce their contracts and non-writing obligations.
Disney-owned ABC Signature’s legal department sent a letter to striking writer-producers, stating that they must perform non-writing duties as per their contractual obligations, despite the ongoing writers’ strike.
“We want specifically to reiterate to you as a showrunner or other writer-producer that you are not excused from performing your duties as a showrunner and/or producer on your series as a result of the WGA strike. Your personal services agreement with [the] Studio requires that you perform your showrunner and/or producing duties even if the WGA attempts to fine you for performing such services during the strike,” wrote Bob McPhail, the assistant chief counsel for the Disney-owned ABC Signature, in a letter sent to showrunners and first obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

As the WGA strike continues amid what all parties believe will be a long-haul showdown, “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” creator Zack Stentz knows that there’s a big difference between the excitement and can-do spirit on the second day versus the second month.
“At that point, they start wondering if they are going to make the rent or the mortgage payment or if they are younger if they are going to have to move back in with their parents,” noted Stentz.
The screenwriter behind “X-Men: First Class” and “Thor” sat down for a conversation with TheWrap. Among the issues discussed were the initial vibe among strike participants, how one of his early television successes may have been a casualty of the last WGA strike in 2007, and what leverage the streamers and the networks have up their sleeves if they are “smart” enough to use them.

For seven seasons, “Veep” painted a portrait of the Washington elite as unflattering as it was accurate. Our nation’s capital, the satire argued, is filled with neither dedicated public servants nor savvy political operators, but bumbling sycophants whose self-importance far outstrips their actual abilities. “White House Plumbers,” the new HBO limited series, extends that argument from fictional characters to actual history. Created by “Veep” writers Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory and directed by David Mandel, the “Seinfeld” alum who ran “Veep” after the departure of Armando Iannucci, “White House Plumbers” charts the awkward bromance of two men who tried and failed to break into the Watergate Hotel. The result is a shotgun marriage of “Step Brothers” and “Slow Burn.”
The latter podcast, which outlined the series of events from the attempted bugging of the DNC in 1972 to the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974, was already adapted into a TV show last year.

‘White House Plumbers’ Review: Woody Harrelson & Justin Theroux Make Fine Stooges in Watergate Farce
Just before G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) embarks on his very public trial for conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping — all tied to the 1972 Watergate scandal — his wife, Fran (Judy Greer), stops him outside the courthouse. “Are you sure you don’t want me to be there?” she asks her husband. “Oh, no, no, no,” Liddy replies. “I am going to act like a jackass — piss off the prosecution, force a few errors, send the whole thing to appeals, and get it all thrown out. If I see you in the gallery, I might be forced to remember my manners.”
Liddy’s trial prep is but one of many, many bad plans the former FBI agent cooks up over the course of “White House Plumbers,” HBO’s five-part limited series about the inept burglars behind the infamous Watergate break-in. But few so succinctly summarize his perpetually cocky, off-kilter demeanor, or what...

In All the President’s Men, the iconic 1976 film about how reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate scandal and brought down the entire Richard Nixon presidency, Woodward’s inside source, nicknamed Deep Throat, famously says, “Forget the myths the media’s created about the White House. The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.”
The new HBO miniseries White House Plumbers takes five hours conveying this idea that William Goldman’s Oscar-winning Atpm script got across in a couple of sentences.

The legacy of the Watergate break-in is one of virulent distrust in the American government, and in some cases aggressive empowerment of shady tactics from the American government. Our media has been enraptured with the story for decades, as an example of how head-and-shoulders-down journalism work can take down the tyrannical powers that be, from Alan J. Paluka’s “All the President’s Men” to Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon.”
But now, Hollywood has shifted to depictions from within the Watergate scandal. Just one year after the limited series “Gaslit,” we have a new five-episode limited series entitled “White House Plumbers.” And the results are sloppy, much like the actual Watergate break-in.
The primary White House Plumbers — the special investigation unit tasked to “plug leaks” emitting from the White House and protect President Richard Nixon’s power by any means necessary — are the gruff E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and the...

As a piece of history, the Watergate scandal is a daunting narrative smorgasbord.
There were too many characters in this madcap dramedy and they almost all beggar belief — one outlandish caricature after another — except that they’re all real. It’s a problem that Hollywood has solved by telling the Watergate story over and over again, with the spotlight on a different principal within the burgeoning fiasco each time. Maybe there are commonalities between Watergate recountings — the security guard removing the tape from an illicitly opened door has become the Murder of Bruce Wayne’s Parents of 20th century American history — but with an ever-changing prism, it should be possible to never come away with a repeated perspective.
Maybe you have All the President’s Men on one, very serious, end of the spectrum and Dick on another, very silly, end of the spectrum and every other variation looking for tonal traction in between.

One of the biggest puzzle pieces of the spring television season recently fit into place with the announcement that the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers” will debut on Monday, May 1. From three of the comedic minds behind the Emmy-winning “Veep” — David Mandel, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck — this five-part political thriller and satire explores the events of the Watergate break-in from vantage point of two of its masterminds: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux).
In the full trailer, Howard’s wife Dorothy, played by Lena Headey, declares the scheme to re-elect President Richard Nixon by bugging their opponents at the Democratic National Committee, “The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” The series begins with the White House employing Hunt and Liddy to investigate the leak of the Pentagon Papers and zeroes in on their subsequent, haphazard schemes to break into the DNC offices; the...

It’s not hard to picture the team behind HBO’s “White House Plumbers” finishing work on an episode of “Veep” and picturing that stellar comedy’s tone being applied to the idiots behind the Watergate break-in. And as the country once again goes through considerations of impeachment and general malfeasance in the highest offices of the United States, the timing seems just right for a scathing look at one of the key points in our continuing disillusionment with the government.

Most are familiar with the Watergate scandal: several burglars were arrested at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters on June 17, 1972; President Richard Nixon’s administration attempted to cover up its involvement in the break-in; and the political crime ultimately led to Nixon’s resignation.
But who were the masterminds behind the Watergate scandal? Their perspectives are revealed in the upcoming HBO limited series, “White House Plumbers.”
“There’s so many different versions, and the one thing that happens in all these versions is the same scene right at the beginning; you see the guys breaking in with flashlights, and then you hear there was an arrest at the Watergate Hotel, or something like that. And that’s it — you never hear about those guys or see them again,” director David Mandel told Variety at the New York premiere of “White House Plumbers” on Monday night. “This is the story about...

HBO’s five-part limited series “White House Plumbers” has been confirmed for a May 1 launch date, which means Lena Headey could have another shot at finally ascending the Emmy throne.
Headey is arguably overdue for an Emmy win after being paid dust for her iconic portrayal of Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones.” She received five — and to date her only — nominations for the hit fantasy series, in the drama supporting actress category, but was denied the crown at every turn. Unfortunately for her and the rest of the “Thrones” cast, the acting branch of the TV academy didn’t care to reward the four-time Best Drama Series champ outside of Peter Dinklage, whose fan-favorite turn as Tyrion Lannister earned him Best Drama Supporting Actor bids for all eight seasons and a record four statuettes. It also didn’t help Headey that her character, the ice-cold, cunning ruler of the Seven Kingdoms,...

Judy Greer has joined ABC’s “Drop-Off” (working title) as a series regular, Variety has learned.
She’ll play Amanda, the hyper-confident, uber-organized, mom who seemingly has it all together and runs the inner circle at Julia’s kids’ school. She’s an expert at the art of a compliment that’s actually an insult. Amanda, who usually arranges babysitting swaps with the moms during school vacations, arranges a swap with Julia, who agrees to watch her kids while Amanda prepares for one of her famous dinner parties…which ends in disaster for Julia.
She joins previously announced star Ellie Kemper, who leads the cast as Julia, a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village.
The series serves as the American adaptation of the British comedy “Motherland.” Variety exclusively reported the adaptation news. The show was previously set up at Hulu by Lionsgate.

Move over, Felix and Oscar. True Detective’s Woody Harrelson and The Leftovers’ Justin Theroux are a mismatched delight as philandering former CIA agent E. Howard Hunt and onetime FBI guy/dedicated family man G. Gordon Liddy in HBO‘s upcoming White House Plumbers. They were President Richard Nixon’s political saboteurs (originally hired to stop leaks) and masterminds of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate building that inadvertently unseated their Republican boss. “Woody leans into the tragedy of Hunt. Justin is Liddy,” says director-executive producer David Mandel, who was a writer on the bitingly funny HBO political sitcom Veep. “Their characters are opposites, but off set, the [actors] would mess with and tease each other. That created this bromance.” Harrelson and Theroux are clearly having a blast in every second of this five-parter. It begins before the break-in with both middle-aged men yearning to be D.C. power players.

There's a reason why Phil Hartman's always at the top of the lists for best "Saturday Night Live" cast members. Yes, he was one of the funniest cast members of his time, but he also kept things rolling whenever he wasn't playing the funniest character in a sketch. "People like Phil make it safe for people to be crazier," Julia Sweeney, who played Hartman's character's wife in the famous "Van Down By the River" sketch, told Grantland in 2014. "They're the gravitas. It's not going to go completely off the rails if Phil's in the sketch."

When the United States House of Representatives attempted to elect a new Speaker this week, political junkies were treated to comedy of errors that could have been ripped straight out of an Armando Iannucci script. GOP leader Kevin McCarthy’s decade-spanning, Sisyphean quest to land the Speakership hit yet another snag, as his ascent to the job was repeatedly held up by a handful of far-right members of his own party who refused to vote for him.
While McCarthy was eventually able to corral enough votes to be sworn in as Speaker, the week of drama made for some incredible television. Many Americans noticed that the coverage on C-span was far more interesting than the network’s normally dry congressional programming, with the camera showing a multitude of side conversations between representatives that would normally never see the light of day.

Considering that the disarray in the House of Representatives is, at this point, downright comical, it’s not exactly a shock that actual comedians will want to weigh in on the situation.

The House of Representatives still doesn’t have a speaker after Kevin McCarthy has failed to win multiple votes for the leadership position, and late night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel are thrilled.
“No one, literally no one, and I called people who know things, no one knows what happens now,” Colbert said of the impasse in the Republican-led chamber, on CBS’ Late Show Wednesday night. “Here’s what we do know: It’s fantastic!”
Later, after a news clip was shown of McCarthy saying he wouldn’t withdraw from the race, Colbert said, “Oh Kevin, let it go. Don’t you know one of the things about dreams is sometimes they die? Except for my dream, where you keep losing over and over again!”
He continued to quip, “Nobody pinch me. I don’t want to wake up, mom. I don’t want to go to school today.
