Sunday night at West Hollywood's swanky London Hotel, celebrities and supporters of GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) gathered to celebrate the end of 2012 as well as look ahead to what's to come in the New Year.
As the party got underway, AfterElton grabbed a few minutes on the red carpet with actor and new GLAAD staffer Wilson Cruz, Scandal's Guillermo Diaz, actor Mike Manning, General Hospital hunk Erik Valdez, Prop 8 plaintiffs Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami and GLAAD Spirit Day Ambassador/activitst Shane Bitney Crone.

Morning Meme: "Dredd" Bombs, Billie Joe Armstrong Heads To Rehab, and We Head To "BreakBad Mountain"
It was a bad weekend at the box office, with a three way tie at $13 million betweenHouse At the End of the Street, The Trouble With the Curve, and End of Watch. But nothing was quite as bad as the opening for Dredd 3D, which only took in $6.3 million, and half of that was probably from AfterElton members.
Fox has revived a reality show concept set in dysfunctional workplaces where the employees get to vote on whether an employee gets fired. I wonder how this got cleared through legal?
Green Day has apologized to fans for Billie Joe Armstrong's outburst, and said specifically that Clear Channel didn't cut their set, but they didn't say it wasn't cut. It was also announced that Armstrong was entering rehab for unspecified reasons.

One of my least favorite talking heads, Nancy Grace went off on one of her trademark rants against a mother who got drunk and rolled over on her infant, allegedly smothering him to death. Nancy screamed about "Vodka Mom" and wanting to know why murder charges hadn't been filed. The mother was so distraught, she doused herself in flammable liquid, set fire to herself and died. So are manslaughter charges pending against Grace?

Occupy Wall Street continued this weekend, and spread both nationally and globally. It even made its way to Charleston, Wv. There are some conflicting reports about what led the NYPD to lock customers in a Citibank and arrest them as they tried to close their accounts.
By all reports, the concert celebrating the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation was a rocking time, from Usher splitting his pants from crotch to knee on stage to Lady Gaga's profane serenade of the Clintons which even referenced Bill's sex scandal past.
With the repeal of Sb 48 failing, California schools are scrambling to figure out how to integrate Glbt lessons into the schools.

Farewell Betty Ford, one of the most honest and upfront First Ladies the United States has ever known. From her professed intent to share a bed with President Ford in the White House to her struggles with alcohol to her battle with breast cancer, she was always an open book and did wonders for progressive causes — all from a Republican perspective. Can you imagine that today?

Welcome back, ladies and gents. Last time we had a really rousing discourse on labels which I found most enlightening. I hope you all did as well!
While researching the particulars of that column, I came across something very interesting. There's a peculiar phenomenon taking place in the weird world of celebrity that many of you have probably noticed: women are coming forward by the baker’s dozen and announcing their bisexuality. In case you haven't noticed, Google it for yourselves. If you do a search for "female bisexual celebrity," you get a half dozen solid hits.
Try the same search using "male" instead of "female" and you get ... a lot of articles asking where all of the bi men are at. Most of them are by AfterElton!
Anna Paquin, Lady Gaga, and Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the notable female celebrities to take up the bi label recently.

Welcome back to Snails & Oysters: The Bisexual Perspective! First up, why did I switch from Tiger Cub to my real name? It was a tough decision, because I am very fond of that nickname and, frankly, I feel a little naked without my stripes. But it was the right thing to do. In a column where I take on various groups, people and entities for propagating bi-invisibility (maybe binvisibility? Nah...) it would be disingenuous for me to hide behind a nom de plume.
However, you lot aren’t my getting my face pic. I draw the line there!
Next, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all for the warm welcome I received in the comments of the first column. It really humbles me to hear so many bisexuals coming forward and saying how grateful they are for Snails & Oysters.
I also love the fierce debate this column is generating!

Matthew recently was interviewed by Hunk du Jour and we especially liked the advice he had for Glbt youth:

I want Adam Bouska to airbrush me back to 1994.
Here at Twitterwatch we experience identity crises every week when we take thirty celebrities' disparate tweets over the course of a week and try and find a narrative. But when the celebrities themselves don't seem to know who they are, things get very meta and we start drinking before noon.
Sasha Roiz, who plays a same-sex loving gangster on Caprica, gets in touch with his younger self while supporting equality. I've often wished I lived somewhere NOH8 did a photoshoot, because I could use some of Adam Bouska's airbrushing myself. Sasha, he was hot enough without the help.
Meanwhile, Boy George weighs in on Lady Gaga/Madonna comparisons with a fairly succinct bit of logic - and we all play dress up to an extent. At least Boy George's desire to pretend has some sass.

Preston Robertson James
The last cycle of Real World, set in Washington, D.C., was relatively highbrow in its Glbt (emphasis on the "B" representation), and cast member Mike Manning was a particular favorite around here.
Before that there was Derek Chavez (Real World: Cancun) and Jd Ordonez (Real World: Brooklyn) – both also immensely likable guys who generally got on very well with their housemates.
This season the MTV series heads south to New Orleans, and it looks like they're going to be serving up a far more polarizing queer cast member.
Meet Preston Robertson James. Here's how he's officially presented in his Real World bio:
Preston's first childhood memory is of crying in the back seat of the car while his mother went to score crack. Needless to say, his family life was anything but ideal. When he was 17, his mother essentially abandoned him, leaving Preston to fend for himself.

This weekend in Los Angeles, the Human Rights Campaign (Hrc), the nation’s largest Glbt civil rights organization, held their Annual Awards Gala. This year Kathy Griffin received an Ally for Equality Award.
Comic Bridget McManus (Brunch with Bridget) worked the red carpet for us at the event and asked Kathy for tips on kissing girls and what kind of lesbian she would be. She also talked to Meredith Baxter about life post-coming out.
Also stopping by to chat with Bridget were Louis van Amstel (Dancing with the Stars), Mike Manning (Real World: D.C.), Blake Lewis (American Idol), and several others.

The comments for this week's Battle of the Network Gays were especially heated. Many were unhappy with the inclusion of Johnny Weir, others felt frustration that a talented black fashion designer seemed to be garnering less votes than some hunky white kid, while yet others were perturbed that a reality show contestant with limited accomplishments other than coming out as bisexual on a TV show was leading in the polls against an Olympic athlete.
Ultimately, Real World: D.C.'s Mike Manning took the crown. But just as he did at the Olympics, Weir made a respectable showing.
Join us Friday when we present four new contenders for the throne!
Note: If there's someone you think should be nominated this week, please comment with your suggestion here – or private message me.

Every week we pick the gay characters, actors, or reality show personalities who have most impressed us in television (or pop culture in general), and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week.
This week's candidates have one thing in common: They're all real live people. Sorry popular gay TV characters, you're sitting this round out. Go hit up TNT. All those "Characters Wanted" ads must mean they're hiring. Besides, they sure could use some gay on that channel!

We know it's hard to believe since on "Real World D.C.," Mike Manning is definitely not hurting for admirers. But when Zap2it talked with him about his Valentine's Day plans, we were shocked to hear he doesn't have any.
"It's gonna suck," says Mike. "I don't have a valentine." Obviously, his D.C. guy didn't stick around.
In fact, Mike is on a plane coming back from Boston Sunday (Feb. 14).
"I've been doing a lot of appearances to promote the show," explains Mike. "I've just been so busy right now that I don't even have time to date anybody."
The show's most experienced bisexual (D.C. roomie, Emily Schromm, is a bi newbie compared to Mike) finds himself single for the first time in five years, but it sounds like he's ready to mingle again.
"I had a serious girlfriend, then I had a serious boyfriend," says the Denver native.

Olympic ice skater, the fabulous Johnny Weir, has decided to stay in the Olympic Village for fear of his safety after "serious threats" from fur activists, the Associate Press reports.
Last month, Weir wore white fox fur on his costume in the free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Fur activists went nuts and Weir says that both he and his costume designer received threats from animal rights groups.
He announced in early February that he would replace the fur with faux.
"I made this decision after several threats were sent to me about disrupting my performance in the Olympic Games and my costume designer, Stephanie Handler, was repeatedly sent messages of hate and disgust," said the flamboyant skater in a statement to press. Zap2it had a chance to talk to "Real World D.C.'s" controversial Christian bisexual Mike Manning about the 2010 Winter Olympics on Friday (Feb.12).
He may not have been able to choose his seven roommates, but when it came to Olympians, Mike knew exactly who he'd want to hang with.
"I love everything about the winter sports," says Mike. "Anything that has to do with the snow is my favorite. I love snowboarding. I love skiing. I love all that stuff. Those guys are really talented."

It Was Certainly The Most Surreal Week Ever!
I thought I would use some of this week's column to share with our longtime readers (and our new ones!) a bit of the nuttiness that went on around the AfterElton.com offices this week. I know many of you are curious about how the Gay/Bi Man of the Decade event unfolded.
This is my fourth year as editor of this site, and while we've had some very interesting stories on Ae in my time — Heroes degaying their gay character, the remake of Fame degaying their gay character, the So You Think You Can Dance debacle, Nuke on As the World Turns, Scott Evans' first interview, Kish on One Life to Live, my Pulitzer (the one in my imagination) — nothing even comes close to what went down with what we are now calling The Big Gay Battle (hereafter referred to as Tbgb).

I thought I would use some of this week's column to share with our longtime readers (and our new ones!) a bit of the nuttiness that went on around the AfterElton.com offices this week. I know many of you are curious about how the Gay/Bi Man of the Decade event unfolded.

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week.
Okay, If you're wondering where a few rather obvious candidates are this week, we think given how much ink has been spilled around here lately over Nph, Barrowman and Oltl's "Kish" these heavy hitters should graciously retire from the battlefield this round and let some other worthy but lesser known candidates vie for the gay of the week crown.
This week's contenders:
Ugly Betty's Troy (Matt Newton) Marc's hopelessly smitten one night stand thinks he's found his soul mate and is following Marc around while gushing about how lucky he is to have hit the jackpot in the love department on his first time out.
Amanda: Okay, what is up with that?...

Hookups. Bacchanalian nights. Fights. You can expect all that on The Real World: DC (premieres Wednesday, 10/9c), but the 23rd season of the MTV series will also mark a shift in tone as the eight twentysomethings get socially involved, interning at various political establishments around the city. "I think it will be a pleasant surprise to see that not only can you go out and take shots, get to know people and have fun," cast member Mike Manning tells TVGuide.com, "but at the same, you can wake up the next morning and meet with a congressman about global warming or about equal rights or marriage equality. See what else the 22-year-old, who worked with the Human Rights Campaign, had to say about his experience, what to expect this season and why he hates being called the "token gay guy."
