Ripley is a psychological crime-thriller series written and directed by Steven Zaillian. Based on a 1955 novel titled The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, the Netflix series is set in the 1960s and it follows the story of Ripley as a wealthy man hires him to convince his son to come back home from Italy. However, when Ripley gets there he gets jealous of the oppulant life the wealthy man’s son is leading and decides to take it for himself. The novel by Highsmith was adapted once before into a film written and directed by Anthony Minghella, and it starred Matt Damon as the titular character. Ripley stars Andrew Scott in the lead role with Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, and Maurizio Lombardi starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved Zaillian’s take on The Talented Mr. Ripley, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

John Lithgow offered new insights into the Dexter revival and his return to the series this morning, after scoring his 13th Emmy nomination.
The two-time Oscar nominee signed on to a revival of the Showtime drama in June, as we told you first. He only was called to set for one day—”in fact, one afternoon.” But when he arrived for the shoot, he was excited to learn about the story the revival is telling.
“I learned that it’s completely different from [the original series]. Kind of like Perry Mason, it’s a reimagination,” Lithgow told Deadline of the 10-episode limited series, show-run by Clyde Phillips. “They don’t take it into a different era, but it’s in a different part of the world, a different part of the country, and a whole new cast of characters.”

Welcome to the fifth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the fifth episode, "College," coming up just as soon as I find $50,000 in krugerrands and a .45 automatic while hunting for Easter eggs... "Are you in the Mafia?" -Meadow There are masterpieces of the moment, and there are masterpieces for all time. Which, I wondered as I began this project,...

Horror heavyweight Eli Roth is best known for spine-tingling flicks like Hostel and Cabin Fever, but he’s dabbled in the world of television before. Last year, Roth executive-produced all 13 episodes of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, a show that, despite its mixed reception, has been renewed for a second season (due to drop this July). Now, with his long-anticipated The Green Inferno primed to hit theaters in September, Roth is jumping back into the small screen for South of Hell.
Roth will direct the pilot episode of the horror thriller, which is set to premiere on We tv sometime next year. If the network sounds unfamiliar, that’s because We tv is known primarily for reality shows like Bridezillas and Obsessed with the Dress. It will premiere its first scripted series, legal drama The Divide, in July.

Dexter, Season 1, “Dexter”
Directed by Michael Cuesta
Written by by James Manos Jr.
The pilot episode of a show that you love represents a vacation in time, a chance to go back down memory lane and smile, grin or laugh at the way things once were. The awkwardness of first meetings, how different they were as people, the sense of blind wonder at what may come; it’s an oddly personal experience, rather like remembering your first day of college. Like watching old home movies, the nostalgia is mixed with embarrassment, amusement and, perhaps in small doses, regret. Even the best shows can have strange pilot episodes, full of quirks that were quickly dropped without explanation, elements that were mostly best left out, some which sadly didn’t make the transition from trial run to the full program.

A film based on the life of Cuban-American pop singer Lupe Yoli, otherwise known as La Lupe, is in the works, with actress Lauren Veléz - whom you might know from Dexter, as well as New York Undercover, back in the day - starring and producing. Veléz successfully raised over $100,000 on Kickstarter to help finance the film, which, according to the most recent Kickstarter update on the project's page (dated March 13), will be directed by Dexter executive producer and writer, James Manos Jr., who also penned the script, for a film that will be titled They Call Me La Lupe. Manos' other credits include producing HBO's hit series, The Sopranos, for which he won an...

"They Call Me La Lupe," originally a play, with the help of acclaimed Puerto Rican actress, Lauren Velez, has generated enough money on Kickstarter.com to begin film production. Most notable for her role on Showtime’s Emmy award-winning series, Dexter, she has become the first Hispanic celebrity to raise over $100,000 on the website for creative projects. Finally she will get to fulfill her dream of portraying La Lupe, the Cuban singer, who was a dynamic inspiration to Velez as a child.
Lauren on her accomplishment with Kickstarter.com
Someone is always going to be the first, but I just hope that it’s the beginning of something bigger. We need the Latino community continuing to support Latino projects. Kickstarter.com empowers people to support something they believe in. They give the community an opportunity to really show up, and put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.
With an already demanding career how did she reach her goal?
My nature is if you give me a challenge, I’m just going to take it on. Kickstarter is really a full-time job. Juggling the finish to Dexter's seventh season, currently airing on Sundays on Showtime, was intense. It seemed almost impossible initially to raise that kind of money in such a short amount of time. But with the help of executive producer Lee Hernandez, and Dexter creator James Manos Jr., the mark of $100,000 to create the movie was hit Oct. 26th. Also several key investors, helped jump-start the campaign when they were willing to match donations made by the public. It is really, really kind of fascinating, because I feel like the Latin voice is starting to collect.
La Lupe, was a famous Cuban singer whose strong personality caused Cuba's leader Fidel Castro to exile her to the United States. How did Lupe impact Velez?
When I was a kid, I heard her music, and I remember being really struck by the sound of her voice and how it made me feel, I felt immediately connected to her. About 10 years ago, I started actively working on trying to bring her story to life, and it started out as a one-woman show, and I got together with James Manos Jr. and he wrote the screen play. Since then, we've been working on it to make a film.
With all her hard work in bringing La Lupe's story to life, Lauren has plenty to look forward to
I’m fulfilling a dream! It’s just an incredible opportunity to play this character, who’s unlike anybody you’ve ever seen, Latina or not. She’s just an extraordinary character to portray. I can’t wait to start living her! She is a mini hurricane. Misunderstood, uncompromising, and unwilling to play by anyone else’s rules. A black Latina in the ‘60s and ‘70s, made La Lupe, a world of trouble because she was in the right place at the wrong time…so ahead of her time.
On going indie
While it would be nice to get the multi-million dollar contracts from some studio to get made, my feeling is that isn’t how it’s going to happen. Shooting guerrilla style, I have an excitement I haven't felt in a long time about making a film.
Currently, in the pre-production stage, what are Lauren's final aspirations?
I hope people love the film, and I hope that they love the character and get to know her the same way I do.
The film is her only focus right now, as season eight of Dexter does not begin shooting until January. She is also looking forward to being home in Spanish Harlem once Dexter is finally done shooting. Velez emphasized her thanks to all who supported “They Call Me La Lupe,” saying she was overwhelmed with the support, and calling the entire process “extraordinary, beautiful, and touching.”...

Police Captain María Laguerta will soon be busy following Dexter’s blood-soaked trail when the seventh season of the Showtime hit drama "Dexter" premieres this week. But Puerto Rican actress Lauren Vélez, who plays the ruthless Laguerta, used the time between seasons to work on a project centered around another ambitious Cuban woman.

For five seasons, Michael C. Hall has been slashing, stabbing and suffocating his way through the murderous Showtime dramedy "Dexter," easily one of the network's biggest hits in ages. To say he "kills in the part" is an understatement.
Now with the six season of "Dexter" wrapping up, Hall is eyeing potential big screen projects for his hiatus from the show -- and he might aim to replicate some of the magic he found on the show. This November, Hall will team up with "Dexter" creator James Manos Jr. on the indie film "Love, Scotch and Death," which, Deadline mentions, stars a character not that unlike Manos.
Manos previously won an Emmy for his work on "The Sopranos" before writing a few episodes of "The Shield and eventually adapting Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter" books for TV. "Love, Scotch and Death" will be his first foray into film writing and he'll also make his directing debut.

James Manos Jr. is probably best known as a creator of the Showtime series Dexter, but we’ll soon have a chance to see him directing Love, Scotch and Death, project that already has Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga attached to star.
We’re actually talking about the semi-autobiographical film that was written by Manos himself, originally titled The Slow and Complete Discompensation of Jim Manos.
According to Deadline, the story will “cover a rather bizarre week in the man’s life. After returning from a stressful vacation, he discovers his parents have died of natural causes together in bed, which forces him to navigate his way past an unsympathetic funeral director, his bewildered children and manic wife, an eccentric priest and some over-sexed neighbors. There is also an arrest for assault and the death of his wife’s beloved dog.”

Michael C. Hall has had no problem being a TV star. He broke out in "Six Feet Under" and currently leads the popular "Dexter," but his moves into film have been less successful. Charlie Kaufman apparently no longer has the market cornered for meta, self-referencing screenplays about an eponymous screenwriter falling apart. Dexter creator James Manos Jr. is giving a similar kind of story a go, setting forth on his directorial and feature writing debut with Love, Scotch and Death. His Dexter leading man Michael C. Hall will star in the film that was once titled The Slow And Complete Decompensation of Jim Manos-- and yes, that's where the Charlie Kaufman similarities start to come in. According to Deadline Vera Farmiga will also star in the film, which focuses on a character named Jim Manos in the middle of a very, very strange week. Dexter: Season Four
Creator: James Manos Jr.
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, John Lithgow, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, Desmond Harrington & Keith Carradine
