It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — except on subscription streaming, where you still can’t find classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
“Rudolph,” the 1964 Animagic stop-motion TV special was produced by Videocraft International — later renamed Rankin/Bass — for broadcast network NBC and sponsor General Electric. Five years later, Rankin/Bass Productions, now actually named Rankin/Bass Productions after Videocraft founders Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, made the animated “Frosty the Snowman” special for broadcast network CBS.
In 1972 “Rudolph” joined “Frosty” at CBS, where they have remained for more than 50 years. In recent times, “Rudolph” and “Frosty” have also been a part of the Disney-owned cable channel Freeform’s “25 Days of Christmas” marathons. Though they run simultaneously, broadcast and cable are contractually considered different “windows” here, several sources with knowledge of the deals told IndieWire. The Rankin/Bass specials are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.

It’s a holiday gift — 65 years in the making!
On Monday, Brenda Lee’s holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song’s distinction arrives a whopping 65 years after it was first released when she was just 13 years old, breaking the record for longest climb to No. 1.

Can there be any lingering doubt about who truly holds the Queen of Christmas crown? Brenda Lee has returned to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” 65 years after the song’s 1958 recording.
The chart-topper sees the singer once known as Little Miss Dynamite breaking at least several Billboard records, including the longest wait between a song’s release and reaching #1, and the longest span between an artist’s #1 hits. At 78, Lee becomes the oldest person to ever top the chart, a record previously held by Louis Armstrong, who was 62 when “Hello, Dolly” peaked in 1964.
Just 13 when she recorded what would become one of the most beloved and enduring holiday classics, Lee has been celebrating the song’s 65th anniversary with a flurry of activity: Last month she appeared in the song’s first-ever video, featuring cameos by country stars Tanya Tucker and...

Brenda Lee may have received the greatest gift of the holiday season: for the first time, her holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” has gone No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Written by Johnny Marks, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was originally recorded and released in 1958. It previously peaked at No. 2 in 2019, but was propelled to No. 1 in 2023 thanks in part to a newly released music video coinciding with the song’s 65th anniversary. Lee also joined TikTok.
In topping the charts with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” the 78-year-old Lee has made history as the oldest artist to ever achieve a No. 1 single.

Brenda Lee was just 13 years old when she first recorded “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958. The song has gone on to be recorded by hundreds of artists, making it one of the most successful Christmas songs of all time. The song was penned by Johnny Marks, a writer who specialized in holiday tunes, having also penned perennial favorites “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Run Rudolph Run” and the melody for “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” among several others.

The big music news of the holiday season has been Mariah Carey‘s long-awaited rise to number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 with her modern standard “All I Want for Christmas is You.” But a rising yuletide lifts all boats. So while Carey spends a second straight week at number-one on the chart dated December 28, she’s not the only one getting a big Christmas bump.
There are actually four holiday songs in the top 10 this week (watch the countdown above). Following right behind Carey in the number-two spot is Brenda Lee‘s classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” The 75-year-old singer released the song back in 1958 — like Carey she was in her 20s at the time — and its rise this week means it’s now higher than it has ever been on the chart. If it manages to overtake “All I Want” before the holiday season is over, it would...

Maury Laws, who as musical director for Rankin-Bass productions supervised the scoring of such animated TV classics as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “The Hobbit,” died March 28 in Appleton, Wisc. He was 95.
Laws’ greatest achievement in TV was arranging and conducting all of the music for the 1964 stop-motion animation version of “Rudolph,” which featured new songs by original “Rudolph” songwriter Johnny Marks. Laws’ warm orchestral settings for such songs as “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “There’s Always Tomorrow” and the title tune helped to make the hour-long show a holiday season perennial.
The success of “Rudolph” led to a series of animated specials by the Rankin-Bass company. Laws worked with Fred Astaire on “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” (1970), Danny Kaye on “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” (1971), Angela Lansbury on “The First Christmas” (1975) and Judy Collins on “The Wind in the Willows” (1987), often writing the songs with lyricist and...

From Crypt to script, Dracula is coming back to our screens in a number of new projects that all seem to be arising at the same time.
Last month, it emerged that NBC was developing a Dracula drama series set in the 1890s. The TV soap opera was described as "young, sexy and supernatural" and as "Dangerous Liaisons meet The Tudors."
It's being scripted by Cole Haddon, who previously wrote Hyde, an as-yet-unmade project from 2010 in which Dr Jekyll is released from prison to hunt a new monster who seems to be using an improved version of the Hyde transformation serum.
In addition, Hammer CEO Simon Oakes has revealed that they are considering "a contemporary Dracula" movie and already had potential filmmakers in mind.
He told Digital Spy: "Certainly in my time with Hammer we will definitely do a Dracula.
"We can't really tell you much about it but we really are looking at it.

Having grown up on the Rankin Bass Christmas specials since I was a child, the Yuletide season just isn't the same without a yearly viewing of some of their most enchanting shows. Since the 1960s and 1970s, specials such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy and The Year Without a Santa Claus were shown on the major television networks. In the late 1980s it became increasingly difficult to see most of these specials unless you had cable television or video cassette recorders as the major networks stopped airing them. With the availability of home video, the shows were inevitably made available to the masses and made great Christmas presents.

"Swank will play Evangeline Harker, a producer on a 60 Minutes-esque show, who travels to Transylvania to do a story on a Romanian gangster. While there, she discovers a monstrous secret and is abducted. Months later, she is found recuperating in a monastery with no memory of what happened. But after she returns to New York, strange occurrences begin that nobody can explain."
Very cool!

The news for John Travolta's latest action piece, From Paris with Love, wasn't so positive. The movie took a distant third place with only $8.1 million against its $52 million budget. That's the lowest debut a Travolta helmed flick has suffered since Lucky Numbers almost ten years ago. Etched forever in my heart is the classic Rankin/Bass effort from 1964: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Burl Ives narrated this gem that heralds the start of all great Christmas programming, like the classic "Grinch," and "Charlie Brown's Christmas". The tale, told by author and TV historian Rick Goldschmidt from "The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass" goes that Rankin personally swayed "Rudolph" composer Johnny Marks. "He was very protective of the...
