Melita Toscan du Plantier, the driving force behind the Marrakech Film Festival, is developing the next directorial outing of Fanny Ardant with Martin Scorsese attached to executive produce.
The movie will star Gerard Depardieu and revolve around an impossible relationship between siblings. Toscan du Plantier, who splits her time between production and the organization of the Marrakech Film Festival, is producing the film with Julien Madon whose banner Cheyenne Productions is owned by Federation.
The untitled project was penned by Ardant in collaboration with Jacques Fieschi, the co-screenwriter of “Lost Illusions” and “Mal de Pierres.” Toscan du Plantier said Scorsese will be creatively involved in the production, from the script – which was translated for him — to the editing.

Up-and-coming Moroccan filmmaker Saïd Hamich Benlarbi is developing a brace of projects as a producer and director, notably “La mer au loin” which won one of the two top prizes at the Marrakech Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops.
Produced by Hamich Benlarbi’s Paris-based banner Barney Production and Manuel Chiche’s company The Jokers, “La mer au loin” is a 1990’s-set melodrama laced with Rai, a form of lyrical Algerian folk music .
The movie takes place in Marseille, in the South of France, and follows a young Arab immigrant living illegally in the city who falls in love with a woman who happens to be married with a cop.
Citing Todd Haynes and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Hamich Benlarbi said “La mer au loin” will “explore the concept of identity and how one defines it through exile.” He said the movie will talk about “Rai, love and friendship” and be “festive...

Mélita Toscan du Plantier has spent the best part of two decades running Morocco’s Marrakech International Film Festival.
This work carries on the legacy of her late husband, influential French producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier, who was the driving force behind the festival’s launch in 2001, overseeing two editions before his death in 2003 at the Berlin Film Festival.
Famously well-connected within the film world, Mélita Toscan du Plantier has since put the event on the international film festival map, pulling together starry juries and guest lists that would not look out of place at Cannes.
This year’s edition, running November 11 to 19, featured Paolo Sorrentino, Vanessa Kirby, Diane Kruger, Justin Kurzel, Nadine Labaki, Laïla Marrakchi and Tahar Rahim in the jury while other guests included Jim Jarmusch, Julia Ducournau, Leos Carax, Paul Schrader and Indian mega-star Ranveer Singh.

After Netflix-backed feature The Hand Of God, high-end drama The New Pope, and a recent TV adaptation of Italian play Sei Pezzi Facili for state Italian broadcaster Rai, Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino says he wants to reconnect with the cinema theatre.
“It’s a moment of confusion for movies. It’s not as easy to see good movies as it was a few years ago. This is a natural thing because of the difficulties brought to us by the pandemic and it will take us some time to understand this reality,” said the Italian director.
Sorrentino was talking at a press conference at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday, which he is attending as the president of a star-studded jury also featuring Diane Kruger, Nadine Labaki, Vanessa Kirby, Justin Kurzel, Tahar Rahim and Laïla Marrakchi.
“What is wonderful about our work, is that we can take on new challenges.

Marrakech – Saving cinema, the joy of sitting in darkened rooms and a lack of female role models in Arab cinema, were just some of the topics addressed by this year’s star-studded jury at the Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday.
Slightly different to October’s announcement, this year’s jury consists of Vanessa Kirby (“The Son”), French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim (“The Serpent”), Australian director Justin Kurzel (“Nitram”), Lebanese director-actor Nadine Labaki (“Caparnum”), Germany’s Diane Kruger (“Inglorious Basterds”) and Moroccan director Laïla Marrakchi
(“Marock”). Paolo Sorrentino, the Oscar-winning director of “The Great Beauty” and “The Hand of God,” presides.
Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”) and Danish director Susanne Bier (“The Undoing”) were originally also announced as jury members.
At the opening night ceremony on Friday, host Nabila Kilani announced that “difficult circumstances” had stood in the way of Bier and Isaac attending Marrakech.
Many questions were addressed to jury head Sorrentino.

Indian acting star Ranveer Singh took centre stage at the opening night of the Marrakech International Film Festival on Friday evening, treating spectators to dancing and an impromptu rap session as he received a tribute award.
The Gully Boy and 83 star, who is one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actors, bounded onto the stage of the opening ceremony performing one of his characteristic energy dances.
“This is the darkest period. When I look at the world around me, I see all sorts of pain and suffering. I feel that in my capacity as an entertainer, the best thing I can do is lighten people’s burden,” said Singh as he received Marrakech’s Etoile d’Or trophy.
Marrakech has a long history of celebrating Indian cinema. The festival previously honored Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan and in 2012, it ran a special sidebar to mark 100 years of Indian cinema.

While France has a deeply entrenched cinema tradition, drama series have been gaining tremendous ground within the country’s cultural landscape within the past few years, with some of the country’s biggest producers, stars and filmmakers venturing into ambitious television projects. The 3-month-old merger of UniFrance and TV France Intl., the country’s film and audiovisual promotion organizations, into a single entity is probably the best illustration of this blended world.
The growing presence of global streaming services, especially Netflix, in the TV space has played a key role in bolstering a talent drain, catapulting French stars, such as Omar Sy with the Gaumont-produced show “Lupin,” to international recognition. Although Sy broke through a decade ago with the smash hit French comedy “Intouchables,” “Lupin” allowed him to reach many more viewers around the world. The Film TV, the Paris-based outfit headed by well-established producers Michael Gentile and Lauraine Heftler, has gained a substantial track record in three years.
The banner is presenting its first two shows at Series Mania Festival, Julie Delpy’s TV debut “On The Verge” which is backed by Canal Plus and Netflix; and “Jeune et Golri,” a series set against the backdrop of the stand-up comedy world.
Commissioned by French pay TV service Ocs, “Jeune et Golri” is a half-hour contemporary romantic comedy series based on an original idea by Agnès Hurstel, an actor and screenwriter, who created the show with Victor Saint-Macary (“Le Brio”) and Léa Domenach.
Hurstel stars in the show as Prune, a 25 year-old stand-up comedian who falls in love with a middle-aged man, Francis, not knowing he has a six-year-old girl. While Prune herself still feels like a teenager, she becomes an unlikely step mom to this little girl.

New Emmy rules mandate only five nomination slots in most categories in which limited series and movies contend exclusively. The ballot for Best Movie/Limited Directing lists 95 submissions, which is enough to trigger a sixth slot. The nominees last year were:
Winner — “Chernobyl” (Johan Renck) “Escape at Dannemora” (Ben Stiller) “Fosse/Verdon” — “Glory” (Jessica Yu) “Fosse/Verdon” — “Who’s Got the Pain?” (Thomas Kail) “A Very English Scandal” (Stephen Frears) “When They See Us” (Ava DuVernay)
None of those programs contend again this year. Lisa Cholodenko won this award in 2015 for “Olive Kitteridge” and contends now for “Unbelievable.” Before winning the Emmy for the former, she won the equivalent award from the Directors Guild of America, which shares voters with the directors’ branch of the academy that votes on this Emmy. The DGA passed over her “Unbelievable” work for Vince Gilligan‘s “Breaking Bad” sequel “El Camino.” Gilligan is a four-time Best...

Glen Ballard, best known for co-writing Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror and producing Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, walked into Alan Poul’s office in 2013 and told the Six Feet Under and Tales of the City exec producer that he wanted to make a show about a jazz club in contemporary Paris.
Six years later, that show, The Eddy, is debuting on Netflix.
“It was a very unusual genesis,” Poul tells Deadline. “Glen left me with a CD with a dozen songs on it. I listened to them and they blew me away. Half of those songs are in the first season of The Eddy.”
Poul subsequently went to see the band that Ballard put together, in venues such as The No Name on Fairfax a few times and one of those times brought Damien Chazelle, whose feature Whiplash had premiered at Sundance but had not yet been released theatrically yet.

1. “Space Force” Season 1 (available May 29)
Why Should I Watch? After “The Office” announced its impending departure from Netflix, it was only a matter of time before the streamer came up with an original series to take its place. Enter “Space Force.” Co-created by “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “The Office” star Steve Carell, this half-hour original series is even being billed as “a new kind of workplace comedy” by Netflix, returning Carell (who also stars) to workday drudgery, albeit with far more glamour than the paper game. As four-star general Mark R. Naird, Carell’s character is tasked with building a military base of operations on the moon in order to achieve “total space dominance,” as ordered by the White House.

After his intense breakthrough drama Whiplash, Damien Chazelle stayed in the world of music with La La Land and now he’s set to return to it with The Eddy, a new limited series coming from Netflix next month. The first trailer has now arrived, previewing the first two episodes (out of eight total) directed by Chazelle himself.
Starring André Holland and Cold War break-out Joanna Kulig, the Paris-set drama follows a once-famous musician who now runs a small Jazz club, but his past comes back to haunt him. Created and scripted by Jack Thorne, it looks to have the energy we’ve come to know from Chazelle as he explores some familiar themes with hopefully a fresh spin.
Other directors helming episodes include Houda Benyamina (Divines), Laïla Marrakchi (Marock), and Alan Poul (The Newsroom). See the trailer below for the film also starring Amandla Stenberg, Leila Bekhti, and Tahar Rahim.

Streaming online via video presentations from March 25, Series Mania’s experimental Digital Forum will make or break on the quality of its centerpiece, its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions. This year’s lineup, at least on paper, looks particularly strong.
Following, a break-down on the 16 originally selected projects:
“The Abduction of Yossele Shuchmacher” (Israel)
Co-created and to be directed by celebrated Israeli cineaste Eran Riklis, based on a notorious true case in 1961 and co-created by “Fauda” writer Moshe Zonder.-Backed by veteran producer Michael Sharfshtein, the title “blends an intimate, painful drama within a powerful social-political set up, wrapped as a psychological thriller,” says Riklis.
“The Black Lady”
An English-language six-part bio-series led by Brussels-based At-Prod about Madga Goebbels which author Hélène Duchateau describes as a “depressingly modern” miniseries: “Beyond Madga Goebbels’ unique experience, it echoes the growing populist trends in Europe and the processes of radicalization in our time.”

Taking place from April 8-13, the 31st edition of the Dortmund | Cologne International Women’s Film Festival will have it’s main program in the city of Cologne. A small selection will be seen in Dortmund as well. A total of 106 films from 37 countries will be screened and about 60 international filmmakers are going to be guests in Cologne. The festival will also be putting on a number of events that go beyond what a normal visit to the cinema has to offer. Events intended to spark a critical response to the medium of film via a number of formats – panel discussions, talks and workshops for cinema aficinados and film-makers alike.
Five Germany Premieres Compete for €10,000 Prize
A total of eight exceptional debut feature films will be screened in Cologne, having been short-listed from the 120 international film debuts of the last two years. Of that eight, the festival will present five of them as firsts for Germany – including, as the opening film, the award-winning tragicomedy The Amazing Catfish from Mexico. The other nominees are: Talea (Austria), The Magnetic Tree (Chile), Sense of Humor (France), Matei Child Miner (Romania), Marussia (Russia/France), Under the Starry Sky (Senegal/France) – and The Plague (Spain). Mostly seen against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, shot with stunning visuals and told with surprising concision, these are stories of childhood, family, identity and belonging.
The Jury for this edition will be formed by Kim Yutani, programmer at the Sundance Film Festival, Turkish director Pelin Esmer ( 10 to 11, Watchtower) and German actress Julia Hummer (Gespenster, Top Girl)
Focus: Turkey
At the Cologne location of the Dortmund|Cologne International Women's Film Festival, the spotlight is always on the cinematic oeuvre of a particular region or country. This year, the encounter is with Turkey and its women filmmakers.
The Country Focus zooms in on the ongoing demonstrations and protest movements organized by Turkish citizens since the end of May 2013 against the authoritarian policies of the governing party in Turkey. The program thus sets out to analyze the concepts and definitions of home and identity and to examine to what extent current protests had already been anticipated there in the films of recent years.
Divided into ten programs the festival will present feature films, documentaries and short films from 2004 to 2013 as well as the historic feature film Dönüs (The Return 1972) by and with the great Turkish actress Türkan Soray.
Filmmakers and experts like Deniz Akçay, Pelin Esmer, Serpil Turhan, Rüya Arzu Köksal Kudu, Aysun Bademsoy, Lale Akgün, Mely Kiyak, Can Erdogan, Emel Celebi, Sedef Özge and Güliz Saglam will also be guests. Two panel discussions, a master class with Yeşim Ustaoğlu and the photo exhibition "Tarlabasi - On the Edge of Transformation"round off the programme as a whole.
Let Your Light Shine - The Panorama section
Beyonce, Vulva 3.0 and other top-rate film discoveries. Panorama showcases 45 new, challenging and entertaining films from 28 countries.
Fiction, documentary, essay, avant-garde, experimental films and all the shorter formats: there are no formal restrictions on the Panorama Section and all lengths of movie are welcome. This year, 13 long films and 32 short to medium-length films are on view, including a good few premieres for Germany.
In the course of the selection process, it is the attitude of the women film-makers, the way they represent people in their films and the effect so generated that play an important role. Yet even though the Panorama section attempts to do full justice to the variety of artistic forms of expression, documentary and experimental films are given some priority. Among these are films like Perfect Garden by Mara Mattuschka, Touch by Shelly Silver, Noor by Cagla Zencirci, My Love Awaits Me By The Sea by Mais Darwazah and Rock the Casbah by Laïla Marrakchi and a film program & live performance by Jodie Mack, just to mention a few...
