Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.

On April 21, 2023, Prime Video released “Dead Ringers” with Rachel Weisz pulling double duty as twin doctors performing questionable procedures on women that are infertile. The limited series executive produced by Weisz, Alice Birch, Anne Carey, Sean Durkin, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Erica Kay is based upon the 1988 film of the same name directed by David Cronenberg.
The limited series opened to rave reviews, holding fresh at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ consensus that reads, “If ‘Dead Ringers’ doesn’t wield as cutting a blade as David Cronenberg’s original chiller, it’s not a pale imitation either, thanks to Rachel Weisz putting on a clinic in doppelgänger duplicity.” The ensemble cast includes Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford, Jennifer Ehle, Emily Meade, and Jeremy Shamos. Let’s see what specific reviewers have had to say.

Rlje Films will release A Nightmare Wakes, the screen writing and directorial debut of Nora Unkel, on VOD, Digital HD and DVD on July 6th. We have two (2) copies of the gothic horror to give away to our readers in the U.S. A Nightmare Wakes is based on the timeless novel and the birth of one of cinema’s most iconic monsters. While composing her famous novel “Frankenstein,” Mary Shelley descends into an opium-fueled fever dream and carries on a torrid love affair at a remote lake house. As she writes, the characters of her novel come to life and begin to plague her relationship, forcing everyone—including herself—to question her sanity. Our own Peter Martin caught A Nightmare Wakes when it premiered on...

One of the great advantages of ScreenAnarchy's global writing staff is that our individual end-of-year lists always have a least a few titles that the rest of us have not only not seen, but likely haven't heard of. And I'm guessing that we haven't had a year with more titles than 2020. This has been a f**ker of a year, to say the least, and we've all had our personal and professional trials. We're happy to report that our beloved Managing Editor, Peter Martin, is on the road to recovery. The switch of many film festivals to an online platform has meant we've covered fests that we otherwise would not have been able to. With 20 of our...

Bad news hit the Screen Anarchy family this week as we received word that our beloved Managing Editor, Peter Martin, had suffered a stroke and was in treatment in hospital. Peter is one of those clasically low-key, glue people who dislike making any noise about themselves but are always there holding things together and making sure everything is running well for everyone else to enjoy. He's not quite a day one guy around here, but pretty damn close to it, with Peter's imprint on this site running back to way before we were called Screen Anarchy at all and while most of us only get to actually see each other in person at festivals around the world, Peter's family. This is a thing that we...

In The Marshes, when a group of young microbiologists head deep into the Australian wilderness to test water samples, they inadvertently enter the domain of a mysterious local. As they travel through the marshes, he stalks their every move, determined to kill anyone who enters his land. Our own Peter Martin caught the debut feature film from writer/director Roger Scott when it landed on streaming service Shudder. Here are some of his final thoughts... When the news hit us that Color out of Space was being made, I was very happy for two reasons. One: it saw the return to full-length feature cinema for director Richard Stanley. And two: we were about to see a Lovecraftian creature feature starring Nicolas Cage. Well, the film delivered and Peter Martin gave it a positive review. German Distributor Koch Media also liked it a lot apparently, because it gave the film an absolutely incredible seven-disc home release. For starters you get Stanley's film on Blu-ray and 4K-uhd (and its soundtrack as a CD), but three earlier film adaptations of Lovecraft's story have been included as well, one of which is 1965's Die, Monster, Die, starring Boris Karloff. Also, there is a wealth...

Some of the year's biggest heavy hitters on the festival circuit are included among this year's lineup, including Lee Chang-dong's sensational Cannes competition title Burning and Gaspar Noe's return to form Climax. Yesterday, Peter Martin reviewed The Night Comes For Us, Timo Tjahjanto's ultra-violent gang thriller which played at Fantastic Fest. In fact, it is So ultra-violent, Peter jokingly states that to make its equal "All you need is a girl, a gun, and 30 million gallons of blood." The screenshot above is one of the film's rare quiet moments, and you can almost feel the countdown to bloodshed already... Peter is not the only one calling attention to the film's extremely bloody approach to fighting: nearly all reviews so far make it their main point. Yet everyone also agrees that while many scenes are certainly horrific, the film itself is not horror. So that made me wonder: what is the bloodiest film I've ever seen that...

Where Were You in ’42? If you were little Johnnie Boorman in 1940, you might have been squatting in a dank bomb shelter with your Mum and sisters, waiting out an air raid alert. Writer-director Boorman’s personal memory is what for some kids was a glorious time when working-class Brits endured adverse conditions: it’s warm & fuzzy affectionate and frequently hilarious, with a keen eye toward slightly bawdy family humor.

While Star Wars is currently world box office leader once more, in the Us it is closely followed by the new Jumanji film. Our Peter Martin thought Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to be a decently fun and thrilling affair, at least as long as it didn't squeeze its messages too hard. Every action-comedy needs a good cast though, and here we see Dwayne Johnson, also known as his wrestling name "The Rock", and he's eminently watchable as always. While he has been in many a bad film and the occasional good one, I find it impossible to dislike him. His on-screen charisma is just too big, and his comedic timing is just too spot-on. He has proven he can act too, when the situation...

“To know Tobe was to love him.” — Mick Garris This past weekend, the horror film world was shaken by the death of Tobe Hooper, a director who forever changed cinema with the unequaled, still-terrifying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. (You can read our own Peter Martin’s write-up of the news and Hooper’s substantial career here.) I was able to speak with some of his collaborators, who are quoted in this post. Other celebrated filmmakers and actors also shared their memories on social media channels, some of which I’ve collected (also below). In every case, a palpable sadness is inherent in these statements — sadness that’s lingered over the horror film community since Hooper’s passing. Some are genuinely distraught; it’s a testament to not only...

This weekend, War for the Planet of the Apes hit cinemas worldwide, and while it didn't quite herald the end of the world as we know it, it hit with a decent bang. Our Peter Martin really liked it, calling it "...the best Apes movie yet, and one of the best movies of the year." The success of the new Apes movies is of course largely due to the excellent work by the special effects team, the motion capture team, and the actors involved. First and foremost among these is Andy Serkis, who by now must be considered to be the absolute world champion in this regard. Almost twenty years ago he was a large part of Weta's experiments in trying to make a believable...

Keanu Reeves continues his adventures as the apex predator in John Wick: Chapter 2, now on Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Peter Martin reviewed the film upon it's cinema release earlier this year and wasn't 100% convinced that the film was necessarily a step of from its predecessor: The original was a marvel of construction and execution, which makes topping it a daunting task. Instead of devising something entirely new, therefore, the decision was made to ... make the same movie all over again! The action is (again) so over the top that it quickly gains escape velocity from reality. The ludicrous plot holes and superhuman tolerance for bodily violence are more about the rhythms of the punches and gun blasts and knife thrusts and...

And oh boy, play him he did: good luck to any actor who has to take on the role of the popular X-berserker in the future. In his review, Peter Martin praises the performances in Logan at least as much as the action. But of course Wolverine is not the only thing Hugh Jackman is famous for. Hélene Grimaud Water: Berio: Wasserklavier: Sawhney: Water: Transitions 1-7; Takemitsu: Rain Tree Sketch No. 2; Fauré: Barcarolle No. 5; Ravel: Jeux d'eau; Albéniz: Almeria; Liszt: Les Jeux d'eaux a la Villa d'Este; Janáček: In the Mist: No. 1; Debussy: La Cathedrale engloutie (Deutsche Grammophon) Classical purists be warned: almost half the tracks here are not the solo piano recital you might expect from the billing. Instead, Grimaud had composer Nitin Sawhney create electronic bridging miniatures (ranging from 0:56 to 1:41) fitted between the solo piano tracks. This works wonderfully well, changing this album from a traditional presentation into a moody soundscape (though the purist crowd was quick to take offense, witness the extremely snarky review on classicstoday.com). Of course, Grimaud is her usual scintillating self on the solo piano pieces. The pieces she has chosen for this thematic program are in a couple of cases "usual suspects" -- the Ravel and Debussy...

This week, we can all return to Wonderland in James Bobin's Alice Through the Looking Glass, though Peter Martin doesn't really much recommend that in his review. Still, one familiar face, or rather voice, is there to greet us: Alan Rickman's. One of many celebrities we've lost this year to cancer, Alan Rickman's death came as a shock. Especially since all of the characters he played, be it young or old, sloppy or obsessive, friends or foes, had always had an extra spark which made them seem more alive than what the script called for. Rickman could make you empathize with (or hate) a cardboard cut-out, when necessary. So once again I'm going to use fifteen pictures of one of my favourite thespians to make...

This week sees the North American premiere of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, co-directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, and starring Tina Fey as a journalist in Afghanistan. In his review, Peter Martin says the film is "difficult to categorize yet enjoyable to experience and distinctive in its approach to wartime humor". And it has Alfred Molina in it as an Afghan government official. One of the best supporting character actors out there, Alfred Molina has a selection of standard settings which have made him a reliable pick for any background character. Loathsome villain? Check. Goofy neighbour? Check. Lovable uncle? Check. Exasperated scientist? Check. But here's the thing: while he is generally great as those (often stealing a scene or two), whenever he gets the true...

Yesterday, Peter Martin wrote a great, great article about why Gods of Egypt is utterly ridiculous, yet why he had a shitload of fun with it regardlessly. And why shouldn't he? Most films require us to shut off part of our brain anyway, lest we look too critically at what is improbable, what is implausible, and what is flat-out impossible. Many impossibilities and other oddities have worked their way into film short-hand, and are use so often that we don't notice them anymore (or have even learned to like them). You know, the exploding car, the shot shoulder which is "only a flesh wound", the Wilhelm scream. So when people like Tsui Hark shoot for showing the impossible, he may succeed or fail, but he's...

In 2015, Claptone‘s Immortal live stage show contributed in no small part to the masked DJ/producer’s rise to notoriety, and it looks like attendees of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will finally have the opportunity to see it for themselves.
Last week, the festival released an updated lineup, and the artist’s name on the roster now reads: “Claptone Immortal Live.”
The Immortal stage show consists of three parts – The Past, The Present and The Future – and is a creative partnership between Claptone and Peter Martin, who was responsible for M.I.A. and Janelle Monae’s famous holographic duet in 2014. As can be seen in the preview video above, it makes for a more conceptual iteration of proper house music than what most of the genre’s purveyors put out.

With Paul McGuigan's Victor Frankenstein hitting theaters Wednesday, November 25 in the Us, we thought it would be cool to check a little what-might-have-been with this mash up poster from one of our favorite artists, Tom "The Dude Designs" Hodge. The Dude takes Mel Brooks' iconic Young Frankenstein one-sheet and does it justice with this new piece. As a fan of Brooks' film, Hodge wanted to pay tribute in a small way and created this brilliant poster in homage. What's even better about the whole thing is that the movie appears to be pretty decent! At least that what our Peter Martin had to say:Victor Frankenstein plays like a genre movie from the classic Hammer era, taking its subject matter seriously, yet still having a good...

The 21st edition of Paris' Etrange Festival came to a fiendish close last night, awarding prizes to four lucky films and leaving local genre-heads heartbroken with the knowledge that it's a full 51 weeks until next year's festivities. Top honors went to Alex Van Warmerdam's hit-man comedy Schneider Vs. Bax, a delightfully nasty piece of work that our man Todd Brown has called "occasionally shocking and frequently hilarious." While Moonwalkers, "a very broad commentary on Swinging London, complete with numerous topless women, an excess of psychedelic drugs, and a brain-fried Ron Perlman, who must team with well-meaning yet ineffective music manager Rupert Grint to [convince Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon-landing]" didn't quite wow our Peter Martin, it certainly went the distance with local festival-goers, who gave...

This week, Ken Kwapis' A Walk in the Woods gets released in cinemas, an adaptation of Bill Bryson's popular book. Peter Martin had a lot of fun with the film, and in his review here he praises the (un)easy camaraderie between its two stars Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. A great excuse to have our weekly quiz be about either of those two, as they're both great, and flipping a coin yielded Nick Nolte! In a career spanning over four decades, Nick Nolte has been used as everything: action hero, villain, strong guy, weak guy, moral beacon, and asshole. Results have varied in the past, but just when you expect you've seen the end of him, and you think he'll probably retire into B-films playing...

One of my favorite indie horror releases of the 2015, We Are Still Here is making its way to Blu-ray and DVD just in time for Halloween:
Press Release: A tragic death leaves a married couple devastated, but their misery soon turns into mortal fear in the thoroughly haunting new film We Are Still Here. The Dark Sky Films/Mpi theatrical release, from the producers of The House of the Devil and Cheap Thrills, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on October 6, 2015. We Are Still Here is an atmospheric, classically constructed haunted house story, but with modern, heightened tension and action. After their teenage son Bobby is killed in a car crash, Paul and Anne Sacchetti move to an isolated 19th-century house in the New England countryside to try to start a new life. But soon the grieving couple begin to sense they are not alone in the old house. The Sacchettis'...

This week, Tarsem's science fiction thriller Self/Less sees a wide release. Starring Ryan Reynolds as a guy trying to find out what's up with his newly grown younger body, the main character is actually a far older guy, played at the start by Sir Ben Kingsley. And while the film itself may not be all that great (read Peter Martin's review), Sir Ben certainly deserves to be the object of this week's quiz. Judging from his occasional (cough) pay-check cash-ins in truly atrocious films, you might wonder why we'd dedicate a quiz to him at all, except maybe to have some fun heckling him. But Sir Ben Kingsley actually happens to be one of the best actors in the world, and especially when cast against...

Hang on to your hats and comb your mustaches, London! DukeFest, that amazing four-night festival of the weird, wacky and just plain mind-boggling returns. From Sunday June 28 to Wednesday July 1st, at the Prince Charles Cinema and Phoenix Artist Club, join The Duke and his compatriots as they present a feast of hidden treasures of film finds from around the world. The opening night film is Belgian thriller The Treatment, about a detective on a relentless hunt for an elusive and particularly sadistic killer, a film that our critic Peter Martin says "snakes and coils its way, sneakily, into the psyche". Closing out the fest is the strange and surreal vampire film Norway, a bizarre trip into Athens in the 80s.Monday night is an extravaganza...

Time for another giveaway! This time around we've got another new release from Texas based Well Go USA. The film is Enter the Dangerous Mind, a psychological thriller based in the world of underground Edm DJs. The film stars Jake Hoffman (son of Dustin) as a DJ with a growing fanbase online whose world and psyche start to unwind as he gets pushed into pursuing a girl, played by Nikki Reed. The film premiered at SXSW under its original title, Snap, in 2013 and has TwitchFilm's festivals editor Ryland Aldrich on board as a producer. I saw the film at that festival and quite enjoyed it, but it was managing editor Peter Martin who had the privilege of reviewing the film for us at the...

Andrew Droz Palermo's One & Two is my favorite film to come out of SXSW 2015. I watched it cold, was floored by the end, and urged other colleagues to see it, and to see it blind. Our very own Peter Martin listened to my nagging persistence and watched it at the festival. He agrees it's a pretty slick movie. So naturally, I reached out to Palermo's team and set up an interview -- I had an abundance of question about this film -- there's a whole lot to it. There is also a lot of mystery in One & Two, so let this sentence serve as a heads up that there are Major Spoilers in this interview. One more time to bring it home: There are major...

TwitchFilm has your exclusive first look at the brand new poster for Joel Potrykus' film Buzzard! Potrykus' film is being released by Oscilloscope Laboratories in theaters and digitally on March 6, 2015. Potrykus regular Joshua Burge (Ape and Coyote) stars in this slacker drama. Marty is a caustic, small-time con artist drifting from one scam to the next. When his latest ruse goes awry, mounting paranoia forces him from his lousy small town temp job to the desolate streets of Detroit with nothing more than a pocket full of bogus checks, a dangerously altered Nintendo® Power Glove, and a bad temper. Albert Camus meets Freddy Krueger in Buzzard, a hellish and hilarious riff on the struggles of the American working class. TwitchFilm Managing Editor Peter Martin had this to...
