German powerhouse Constantin Film and Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions have teamed to make a high-end drama series about the events surrounding the Nuremberg Trials.
The drama, currently unnamed, follows the prosecution of Nazi officials after World War II, the first time in history that people were held accountable for war crimes, exploring characters from all sides of the trials.
The series will be executive produced by Oliver Berben and Robert Kulzer for Constantin Film, Spotnitz and Emily Feller for Big Light, and Ron Maxwell (Gettysburg) along with Jeff Berg of Northside Services.
“This series is a real powerhouse,” said Spotnitz. “It’s an investigative mystery, a suspense thriller set both in a courtroom and on the global stage, and one of the most searing moral dramas imaginable. The characters and the issues all seem startlingly relevant and contemporary.”

Cynthia Nixon, who wants to make her political debut as governor of New York, made her film debut at age 13 in Little Darlings. The movie's plot — similar to the upcoming Blockers — had the two leads (Tatum O'Neal, then 16, and Kristy McNichol, then 17) betting $100 over who would be the first to lose their virginity while at summer camp. THR described the 1980 film as "a teenybopper Animal House — it's just as gross as it is funny — although it goes for a sensitive, sentimental ending."

Summer camp movies became a subgenre onto themselves in the late 70s, continued vigorously throughout the 80s, and stretched into the early 90s before the genre waned. After Ivan Reitman’s Meatballs (1979) and Ron Maxwell’s Little Darlings (1980) struck box office gold, genre filmmakers set their suspicious eyes on sprawling campgrounds quiet lakes, and sinister…

Look past the skimpy budget, kitschy death scenes and cheap visuals. Its fictional account of the Civil War's bloodiest battle still brings a catch to the throat
• More from My guilty pleasure
In 1998, five years after the release of my guiltiest cinematic pleasure, Christopher Hitchens attended a 135th anniversary re-enactment at Gettysburg. He subsequently considered our endless fascination with such great battles: "Either you can feel a thrill and a catch in the throat at the mention of Thermopylae and Agincourt, Culloden and Gallipoli, Jarama and El Alamein, or you cannot."
It really is that simple. At the mention of Gettysburg, battle or movie, I feel a thrill and a catch in my throat. I suppose, that I am compelled to suggest why this should be so, as well as why it shouldn't.
The battle of Gettysburg was fought in rural Pennsylvania between 1 and 3 July 1863. Fifty-thousand men died, the Union...

Title: Copperhead Director: Ron Maxwell Starring: Billy Campbell, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, Lucy Boynton, Peter Fonda, Casey Thomas Brown Its title a slur for Northerners who opposed the American Civil War, “Copperhead” marks the third film from director Ron Maxwell (“Gettysburg,” “Gods and Generals”) about the United States’ bloodiest armed conflict. In theory, movies like this produced outside of the Hollywood system have the potential of some measure of additional freedom, being unburdened by casting dictates and endless studio notes that often polish down history’s rough edges. Unfortunately, in reality, Maxwell’s film is a drawn-out, schematic melodrama rife with somnambulistic speechifying, and a work every bit as turgid and baldly [ Read More ]

A Civil War movie without a battle scene is like…wait, what? A Civil War movie without a battle scene?! That is “Copperhead,” a sincere, slow-moving, occasionally successful film devoted to one specific homefront story. That, in itself, is noteworthy. After all, as many of the characters in Ron Maxwell’s film point out, in addition to the costs on the battlefield, there were many, many costs at home. Life carried on, uneasily, and as the war raged the number of fathers and sons who would return home upon its conclusion grew smaller and smaller. With such a stunning body count, it is not surprising to hear that there was a vocal minority against the conflict — including some Northerners. “Copperhead,” based on a novella by Harold Frederic—whose “Damnation of Theron Ware” F. Scott Fitzgerald called “the best American novel” written before 1920—is the third straight Civil War film for Maxwell,...

Once again revisiting the Civil War with Copperhead, director Ron Maxwell (Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) shows a flair for mythologizing via beautiful panoramas of upstate New York landscapes but less so, unfortunately, through his film's inert story and flat performances. Based on Harold Frederic's novel, Maxwell's tale concerns farmer Abner Beech (Billy Campbell), whose opposition to Lincoln's "unconstitutional war" inspires rebellion from son Jeff (Casey Thomas Brown) and local abolitionist Jee Hagadorn (Angus Macfadyen)—whose daughter, Esther (Lucy Boynton), is fancied by Jeff. The result is an unsuccessful balancing act: presenting man of principle Abner (nether pro-South nor pro-slavery) as a virtuous victim of discrimination despite resisting a war vi...

There are few moments in American history that so unforgettably changed the course of the nation, and the Civil War, over a hundred years on, continues to fascinate filmmakers, authors, scholars, historians and more. For director Ron Maxwell, he's dedicated a good part of his career to the subject, with two films -- "Gettysburg" and "Gods & Generals" -- already under his belt. And now, he's delivering his third film in his American Civil War anthology with "Copperhead," and we've got a new look at the movie. Based on the novel by Harold Frederic, the film stars Billy Campbell, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, and Peter Fonda and tells the story of Abner Beech, a dairy farmer and anti-Abolitionist in Upstate New York, who earns the titular sobriquet for his views on the war, which finds him divided from his neighbors. In this exclusive clip, we see Abner ponder the cost of...

The Civil War stories head north.
In Ronald F. Maxwell’s “Copperhead,” the indie Civil War drama looks into the conflicts between warmongers and pacifists in the North. Even in the upstate New York, families are not quite immune from the horrors of war as they fight amongst themselves.
Latino-Review conducted a phone interview with actor Augustus Prew last month for “Copperhead.” He discussed with us about the themes of the film, his role and the production with Maxwell in Canada. He also talked about his role in the upcoming movie “Kick-Ass 2.”
“Copperhead” is in theaters this weekend.
Read the full transcript below:
Latino-Review: What attracted you to “Copperhead” in the first place?
Augustus Prew: I thought the script is just fantastic. It’s very rare to read the script that doesn’t pander to the audience. It doesn’t dictate on who’s the goodie or the baddie.

Director Ron Maxwell's "Copperhead," on VOD Friday, is the sixth Civil War-era film to debut in the past 12 months, the most earnest and straightforward in a burgeoning subgenre. Nearly 150 years after the Battle of Gettysburg, The War Between the States remains Hollywood's favorite war. Well, not exactly. Compared with the storms of steel that rage over huge chunks of modern World War II dramas (see the opening sequence of "Saving Private Ryan"), recent Civil War films tend to shy away from direct depictions of the fierce, internecine violence that characterized the conflict. Hollywood prefers the Civil War omnipresent but almost invisible, as though it took place on the dark side of the moon. It is much easier, I suppose, for American audiences to stomach their boys killing Nazis than killing each other. "Copperhead," a slight, talky picture, as chaste as a schoolhouse kiss, is emblematic of this absence. As...

Exclusive: ‘Gettysburg’ Director Ronald Maxwell Updates on ‘The Last Full Measure’ and ‘Belle Starr’
It’s been a decade since Civil War drama “Gods and Generals” was in the theaters. And that sequel followed the 1993 Civil War epic “Gettysburg.”
Will “The Last Full Measure” finally make it to the big screen after a long wait?
According to “Gettysburg” and “Gods & Generals” director Ronald F. Maxwell, Civil War fans may have to wait a little longer.
In an exclusive phone interview with Latino-Review, Maxwell carefully updated the status of adapting Jeffrey Shaara’s book about the Civil War after Gettysburg. He was promoting an indie Civil War film “Copperhead,” which is in select theaters later this week.
“I would love to do the third part of the trilogy. It’s a big movie like the other two, which is an epic genre,” he told Latino-Review. “The epic part is the time to tell the story. And it’s because it has to cover the [battles of] the...

Today we have the trailer and poster for the upcoming Ron Maxwell‘s (Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) Civil War-era movie Copperhead. Inspired by true events, it’s the story of Abner Beech, a dairy farmer in the North who opposes the war and is alienated because of his beliefs. Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home – of a family ripped apart by war, of fathers set against sons and daughters, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story...

With Game of Thrones‘ second season having just concluded, Kit “Jon Snow” Harington will do a little feature work before it’s back to sword-swinging across Westeros for him. There’s already a role in WB’s fantasy epic, The Seventh Son, getting underway, and ScreenDaily now reports that Harington will join Vera Farmiga for Greenland Time, an endeavor from writers and first-time directors David Newman & Catherine Linstrum; Sigma and Lars von Trier‘s Zentropa are producing.
A psychological thriller set in the titular country, Greenland Time follows a woman (Farmiga) trying to find the man (probably Harington) that ran over and killed her daughter in an accident. How does a standard set-up along those lines become psychological? We’ll have to tune in and find out for ourselves — right now, let’s just some credit to Harington on landing what, from the sound of it, might be a plum...

With it being inevitable that The Killing gets axed right around the end of its second season, this is the kind of news Billy Campbell could use — and it happens because Jason Patric sounds like an idiot! You never know how these things will fall into place. Right: Deadline reports that the former is stepping in for the latter on Copperhead, a new Civil War drama from director Ronald F. Here.s a casting-change story with a twist: Weeks after shooting had commenced on the Civil War-era drama Copperhead, it seems lead actor Jason Patric has been replaced for failure to take direction from his director. In his place, we.ll get one-time Rocketeer and recent The Killing star Billy Campbell. Ronald F. Maxwell . the man behind such Civil War efforts as Gettysburg and Gods and Generals -- is helming Copperhead in New Brunswick, Canada. The screenplay tells the all-too-familiar tale of a close-knit family torn apart by the war between States. Patric was set to play family head Abner Beech, only Deadline says the actor .was dismissed . for refusing to take instructions. from Maxwell, and Campbell has been plugged in. Strange. We.re not saying that Maxwell.s an infallible filmmaker who demands to be listened to. But his past credits suggest he.s at least informed enough on...

Copperhead has a new lead actor. Billy Campbell will take over the lead in the Civil War-era feature after Jason Patric was let go this weekend. Copperhead was three weeks into shooting up in New Brunswick, Canada, when Patric was dismissed, Deadline has heard, for refusing to take instructions from director Ron Maxwell. Billy Campbell, who plays Darren Richmond on AMC’s The Killing, will now portray family head Amber Beech in the film, which is being produced by Swordspoint Productions. The feature is based on Harold Frederic’s 1883 novel about a family feud during the Civil War. Patric is repped by ICM. Campbell is repped by CAA and Kritzer Levine Wilkins Griffin Entertainment.

Imagine if Ronald F. Maxwell’s 1993 film Gettysburg were remade with the new standard of aesthetic grittiness defined for war films that came from Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan: that’s History’s Gettysburg. It’s a raw, brutal depiction of the three-day battle that would ultimately decide the fate of the war that had split the country in half. Few production choices are odder than visceral scenes of war periodically interrupted by talking heads, but that’s how the 94-minute feature unfolds, but it makes Gettysburg a terrific viewing experience and, what I imagine to be, a great teaching aid on the subject.

I watched Spartacus last weekend.
All 3 hours and 16 minutes of it.
Which is pretty challenging when you’re trying to watch it during the day while also taking care of a baby. I sometimes feel guilty watching things on TV while babysitting, because my son will get exposed to TV plenty fast without our help. However, I feel a lot more guilty when my wife is around. Fortunately, she was out for most of the morning/early afternoon on Saturday, so I had plenty of time to finish the whole thing, especially making use of his hour-long nap. It got me thinking about really long movies in general, how they almost have to be really good for us to be willing to sit through the whole thing. Spartacus was no exception.
And that made me wonder which really long movies I like most, a potential topic for my Unfiltered series on the Flickchart blog.

Gods and Generals, the second of Ronald F. Maxwell's maximalist civil war films produced by Ted Turner, is releasing its new extended director's cut. Clocking in at very close to five hours, this event timed to coincide with the sesquicentennial of the advent of the civil war, is not going unnoticed by history buffs - or by Warner Home Video.
In addition to a special limited edition collectors edition of both Gettysburg and Gods and Generals (featuring maps, bonus features and commentaries enough to keep you busy for month) a special screening was held at the Manassas Battlefied (aka Bull Run.)
In addition to the first public screening of the new cut (featuring a special appearances by most members of the cast) there was a special reenactment ceremony. Who says cosplay was invented at Comic-Con?

It’s the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, so obsessives should be prepping themselves for a deluge of tributes, History Channel retrospectives and Budweiser-fueled reenactments.
Although lauded documentarian Ken Burns made the definitive movie about the conflict, it took a media mogul like Ted Turner to create the ultimate dramatization of the whole North vs. South thing. Between 1993’s "Gettysburg" and 2003’s "Gods and Generals," the CNN honcho and former Mr. Jane Fonda sunk over $100 million into two massive productions that attempted to humanize both sides and offer some perspective on the nature of a country turned against itself.
"Generals" was a fiasco, but "Gettysburg" (now available on Blu-ray) is a surprisingly potent epic detailing the bloodiest, most significant battle in the Civil War.
Originally intended as a TNT miniseries, the film , which New Line released in theaters, definitely has that made-for-tv vibe; but counters it...

Chicago – “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals” have legions of hardcore fans who adored them when they first played in theaters and will love the new Blu-ray editions that feel like hardcover books more than your standard disc release. One has to admire the marketing machine at Warner Bros. who can tie these titles in to the 150th Commemoration of the Civil War and make them perfect Father’s Day gifts at the same time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Gettysburg” and its prequel “Gods and Generals” barely made a dent at the box office (as epic period pieces rarely do) but I’ve always gotten the impression that they have very loyal audiences, the kind of old-fashioned men who would sit down and watch these two Blu-rays back-to-back and lose a whole day in their Civil War recreation.
As for the rest of you, the films are good but not great. They both...

Last week we heard that Paramount was holding an open casting call seeking 13-14 year old boys and girls with "a Midwestern feel" for a production that many (including us) guessed might be J.J. Abrams' soon-to-shoot Super 8. But now a listing suggests that, despite being for a Bad Robot production, the call is for a different film altogether...unless this is a Cloverfield-style bluff from Abrams & Co. The Playlist found a listing in the current print edition of Production Weekly which says the casting call is really for Bad Robot's remake of Ronald F. Maxwell's teen comedy Little Darlings. That would be the film that originally starred Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol as "two 15-year old girls from different sides of the tracks compete to see who will be first to lose their virginity while at camp." (Ah, the teen movies of the late '70s and early '80s.

Although she’s been the star of such classics as “Boogie Nights,” “Drugstore Cowboy” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” Heather Graham has rarely delved into serious dramatic roles -– and she’s rarely been as hot as she is now, with “The Hangover” riding high at the box office. When we spoke with her recently, the blonde bombshell revealed plans to get gritty with a fact-based biopic about a lovestruck prisoner of war.
“I’m doing this movie about this Russian actress named Zoya Fyodorova,” the “Hangover” star revealed. “It’s a true story; she lived during World War II, she fell in love with this American officer. It was the time of Stalin, and if they thought you were talking to someone that wasn’t Russian, they could throw you into jail for twenty years. She was in jail for eight years.”
