I call YouTube "the black hole of the Internet," because you go there looking to do research on old movie advertising and two hours later you've gotten nothing done but you've found the "Ghostbusters" logo drinking a Diet Coke. These are the results of one of my recent excursions into the black hole: seven of the weirdest vintage commercials in the history of television (American television, that is; weird commercials from around the world deserve a list all their own). Here, presented in no particular order, are my favorites:
Radioactive Makeup Tests
Dorothy Gray Cosmetics
"A clean skin is a healthy skin," boasts this ad for Dorothy Gray Cosmetics. And really, what gets skin cleaner than a big old blast of radioactivity? This absurd makeup advertisement proves the effectiveness of cold cream by using it to remove dirt that's been rendered "just radioactive enough" to register on a Geiger counter.

Samantha Armytage has left Dancing with the Stars. The Weekend Sunrise presenter, who was partnered with Brendon Midson in this year's Australian version of the reality television show, was eliminated after performing a waltz and paso doble in last night's episode. Dancing with the Stars judge Josh Horner told Armytage after her waltz: "This is one of your best performances. But against the other competitors you've left it too late." When the verdict was announced, the TV star said: "I'm pretty happy with that. I made it to week nine in a dancing competition." She added that she was "proud" to have raised money for Ronald McDonald House Charities (more)...

In a miraculous stroke of good fortune, USA Network opened the doors of its brand new drama series Suits to the press so that we could see what is really going on in the hallowed halls of the fictional law offices of Pearson Harden. As can be seen from the set photos, it was rare chance to see a new show being built from the ground up – to watch the glass tower world of New York City be rebuilt in a Toronto film studio. Providing their exclusive insight on their characters and the secret ingredient to this new show were stars Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and executive producer Doug Liman. (Unfortunately Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle were tied up filming and were not available for interviews that day.)

An anonymous street artist recently transformed this soviet monument of Russian's Red Army soldiers, and turned them into popular superheroes and cartoon characters. In the statue you will now find Superman, Santa Claus, Ronald McDonald, Captain America, Robin and a couple others I can't really make out. And yes, Santa Claus and Ronald McDonald are superheroes. Enjoy!

An anonymous artist transformed Russian Red Army soldiers from a monument in the city of Sofia, in Bulgaria, into versions of Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Robin, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus, and the Joker.
The giant monument was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Russian ‘liberation’ of Bulgaria in 1944. It is regarded as the prime example of the forceful socialist-realism of the period.
The place of honor goes to a Red Army soldier atop a column, surrounded by animated cast-iron sculptural groups depicting determined, gun-waving soldiers and members of the proletariat. But those characters have been painted over, along with graffiti at the bottom saying “Moving With The Times” in Bulgarian.
We put this up just to make sure nobody thinks these are new costumes for the reboot.

Donald Trump might want to say "You're Fired!" to Jason Sudeikis after hearing what the "Horrible Bosses" star had to say about the "Apprentice" host's role as a boss in real life. But luckily for the "Saturday Night Live" cast-member, there was nothing but praise for his actual boss.
The topic of real-life bosses came up during the MTV Sneak Peek Week Q&A with Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and director Seth Gordon about "Horrible Bosses," the forthcoming comedy where three friends (Sudekis, Bateman and Charlie Day) conspire to murder their awful employers (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey) in something of a mix of "9 to 5" and "Strangers on a Train."
Real-life real estate mogul and potential politician Donald Trump was the first famous boss introduced into the conversation. "I don't know if he's a good boss," offered Sudekis. "He seems kind of like the Ronald McDonald of bosses.

When Doctor Who returned to TV screens in the mid 2000s, the official BBC website ran a recurring feature called The Fear Factor. What happened was that a family of kiddywinks would preview the upcoming adventure and rate it from one to five as to how terrifying it was (1 = Harmless; 5 = Shit Your Pants). When it came to Tooth And Claw, the kids were suitably quaking at an episode that was touted as the scariest to date for the 21st century revival.
Now the scare factor in the reboot of Doctor Who has been a bit of a bone of contention. Some will argue that it's nowhere near as scary as what had gone before: The late '60s stories paraded scary monsters week in week out; The early '70s went close to the knuckle with blank-faced dummies, killer dolls and suffocating chairs; The mid-70s stories contained regular haunted...

What to watch on Wednesday, May 25.
We're entering strange territory, everyone. All the normal shows are going on hiatus (some of them forever!) and new, weird ones are starting to show up in their places. It's like if your dad excused himself from the dinner table and Ronald McDonald came in and sat in his chair. Ugh, summer programming! Anyway, you may as well enjoy the last gasps of some of the stragglers:

Pre-Saturday Rapture tweets continue to be the hot thing in online discussions this week. Ben Templesmith has been weighing the pros and cons of what could happen if the world ends over the weekend. Jill Thompson, meanwhile, fears what living by a graveyard could mean, and Kieron Gillen hopes that the Rapture will be nice to listen to.
In less comfortable topics, Lars Van Trier continues to be getting all of the wrong kind of attention following some Nazi-related comments he made at a Wednesday press conference. Implications for him and reactions to calls for Ronald McDonald to step down as a mascot for his fast food chain are the big items for the day.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for May 20, 2011.
@rebekahisaacs Even the prettiest pencils don't always translate well to inks/colors. Doing it yourself is the only way to know what works & what doesn't.

Ronald McDonald. To many, a gentle, kind clown looking to hand strange children 99 cent hamburgers. To others, an acid-induced fever dream caused after eating an expired McRib. And to some, the Gingerest of Geisha girls. But it seems like one group of concerned Americans has made Ronald McDonald the latest of our most prized national targets. A non-profit advocacy group operating under a website called “LetterToMcDonalds.org” has written a — yes — open letter to Micky D’s asking them to retire Ronald McDonald from our national eyeballs and brainfolds. The letter states, in short: “Ronald captures kids’ attention better than anyone else can.” You use Ronald McDonald and other promotions to appeal to kids in environments that informed parents and health professionals can’t constantly monitor – from schools to libraries to the internet. Today, your icon is as recognized as Santa Claus… “We ask that you heed our concern and...

Ronald McDonald is the most terrifying inhuman creature on the face of the earth. A tall clown with hellfire-red hair who enjoys hanging out with children when their parents aren’t looking, Ronald has terrorized young people across the world for nearly five decades. Apparently, there was a time when Ronald’s shenanigans were actually somewhat amusing. Perhaps that was before he started wearing a bright yellow jumpsuit, which makes him look like a psychotic hermit on his way to mopping up a bloody crime scene. God, just look at the above picture! It’s like you can read his thoughts,...

Though rumor had it Ben Roethlisberger popped the question to Ashley Harlan over the winter holidays, Big Ben remained mum on the situation until now. He confirms to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Wednesday (Apr. 6) that he and Harlan will tie the knot this summer.
"I was surprised at how much media attention it was getting -- it's just an engagement," he says. "I never expected it to be on the front pages of all the papers and websites. There was speculation what our invitations would look like and who is coming! It almost seemed surreal, it was like a movie or something, it was weird."
The wedding is set for July 23, just one week before his Steelers are expected to report to training camp (assuming the current player lockout is lifted). In lieu of gifts, the couple is asking their 500 guests to donate money to Roethlisberger's foundation, after which he...

The trio of music legends were inducted in a ceremony Monday at New York's Waldorf-Astoria, along with other 2011 inductees such as Dr. John, girl-group star Darlene Love and singer-songwriter Leon Russell.
Diamond, who had been in Australia on a tour, was a little disoriented when he got on stage, telling the audience, "Here I am.

Yesterday, the entire internet posted the kinda-hyped “Jennifer Aniston Sex Tape,” which was not a sex tape but, in fact, a video of Aniston deliberately attempting viral trends in a lengthy commercial for Smart Water. I was completely fooled – I thought Smart Water had literally filmed a Jennifer Aniston sex tape and was like “we don’t usually do this because we’re a water company and we’re not sure if this is legal but here is moving image of actress Jennifer Aniston having sexual intercourse. Smart Water – the Smartest Water in the waterfall! The video features Aniston and a team of nerdy viral marketing characters attempting various internet hallmarks, including puppies, CGI’d dancing babies, and a Double Rainbow Guy facsimile. Ultimately, it’s not terrible, but the whole thing is so selfconscious and lame in the way that every time a company tries to do something radical...

Aaaaaaaaaaand this is the weirdest thing you'll see all day. A group in Finland calling themselves the "Food Liberation Army" has apparently stolen a statue of Ronald McDonald from a local McDonalds and made a series of "terrorist" videos in which they blindfold and then behead it, all in the name of "better quality and ethicality of consumption." On Fox News, Megyn Kelly attempted to be outraged by them imitating videos of people actually being killed but, in the end, just embraced how utterly and amazingly absurd it is.

How many times have you been promised the world but have never received the goods? Like the time that you were promised an a la carte menu in your local restaurant – when in fact all you received was a tiny plate of pretentiously-assembled food that wouldn't satisfy a hamster (all to the tune of £50-plus prices of course). Or like when you're shown around a house that's supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime palace and it turns out to be the sort of hovel that you might see in an episode of Shameless. Heck, LordSirBaronDukeKingAlanSugar gets this on a weekly basis with The Apprentice, as a small army of incompetent wannabes promise the universe and a gaggle of ponies, but always end up failing to deliver. No wonder Sugar's face is in perpetual scowl mode.

The Double Rainbow guy finally got an ad deal. Of course, he really really loves anything that comes in sets of two. Jennifer Aniston speaks on getting asked to join the cast of SNL, before she went off and joined the cast of that other show. You know, the one that made her kind of famous. Clothing label Kenneth Cole comes forward with what must be the least sensitive promotion of all time: a Tweet suggesting that the reason people are, you know, dying on the streets of Egypt is because they're excited about clothing deals. That doesn't even qualify for "too soon." It's still fucking happening. A food-activist group in Finland has taken a Ronald McDonald statue hostage. If McDonald's doesn't answer their questions about its food's content, they plan to execute him. The owner of the Washington Redskins is [...]...

Hair today, gone tomorrow—that's Rihanna's typical M.O. But the "What's My Name?" singer and fashion chameleon has been rocking her latest hairstyle—a long and layered deep-red 'do with face-framing bangs—for nearly a week now. RiRi debuted the toned-down style at Cut restaurant in L.A. last week, and she kept the look going at the L.A. Clippers game last night—paired with matching lipstick and an American flag tee. Compared to the crazy Woody Woodpecker hair, Ronald McDonald shades and two-tone pompadours, this is the freshest and prettiest style Rihanna's rocked in a long time. Keep it up, babe!

During Doctor Who's 47 years, companions have come and gone and have stuck by the good Doctor through thick and thin. We've had all sorts of companions, from plucky journalists through to shifty non-public school boys; leggy swinging 60s dolls through to haughty Time Lady ice-maidens and trusty schoolteachers through to – erm, Adric.
For completism's sake, I'm including all the companions of The Doctor, so that means one-offs too, like Adelaide and Christina – they were described in the BBC press releases as companions, so they're fair game. There'll be the equivalents of bronze, silver and gold for each category, so let the tournament commence!

Which one of these advertising icons is the oldest: Ronald McDonald, Smokey the Bear or The Trix Rabbit? That was the sixth question on the Dec. 22 episode of "Million Dollar Money Drop" on Fox that secured a couple $240,000 dollars. Do you know the answer? You should if you read the headline for this article.
The answer was Smokey the Bear, who was first introduced to the public via a poster on Aug. 9, 1944. Smokey is 66 years old and is the most recognized image of the Us Forest Service, helping to prevent forest fires. Trix Rabbit is the Jane Brady of the trio at 53 years-old, while Ronald McDonald is the baby at the ripe old age of 47.
If the Google Trends rankings are any indication, most game-show watchers cheated as Smokey the Bear, Ronald McDonald and Trix the Rabbit are all in the top 20. In case you haven't watched, here's the premise:...

It’s a sad fact that Joe Camel has frequently polled higher with American five-year-olds than Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Sad, yes, but can I say that it’s also kind of awesome, without endorsing cigarette smoking? Awesome in its power, awesome in the subliminal influence that a glasses-wearing, phallic-nosed camel can persuade a kid to pick up a cancer stick that will immediately make him or her cough like an 86-year-old asthmatic. Pantomimes: I hate 'em. Let me count the ways: The forced jollity. The cheesy music. The gaudy sets and costumes which could melt the eyeballs from a million miles away. And don't even get me started on the strained attempts at audience participation.
Plus there's the fact that panto season means Christmas, a time of year that depresses the hell out of me because of the empty bank account, the turkey, the freezing weather, the fact that summer seems like a dot on the horizon, the X Factor winner getting to number one, Cliff - or the fact that I am a great big Scrooge who makes the Grinch seem like Ronald McDonald.
So it's with trepidation that I approach The Horns Of Nimon, a Doctor Who story that can only be described as pantomime. Appropriately, it originally went out during the Christmas period of 1979, and as a result, it...

Kanye West has made Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year even more special. In front of more than two million people lining the parade route in New York on Thursday morning, November 25, the 33-year-old rapper delivered a brief, yet rousing performance of "Lost in the World" a song from his fifth album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy".
Riding the Big Apple float adorned with a giant apple and a New York taxicab coming out of a tunnel below, the "Power" rapper kicked off his performance at around 11:20 A.M. after an introduction from "Today" show host Matt Lauer. He was seen wearing a long fur vest, leather pants and a shiny gold V-neck shirt for the appearance.

Brian Dillon hails the return of Patrick Keiller's Robinson in a film about the conundrum of the countryside
The opening sentence of Patrick Keiller's new film, voiced with laconic precision and italic irony by Vanessa Redgrave, is calculated to quicken the hearts of admirers of Keiller's enigmatic oeuvre: "When a man named Robinson was released from Edgecote open prison, he made his way to the nearest city and looked for somewhere to haunt." Robinson in Ruins is the third of Keiller's feature-length essay-fictions to deposit his eccentric protagonist among the relics of millennial England, where he functions once more as the comically half-deluded conduit for the director's own brand of visionary scholarship. As a fictional invention, the autodidact aesthete Robinson, whom we only ever encounter via the films' narrators' vexed relations with him, is an absurd sort of wraith, tricked up from reminders of Defoe and Céline, but...

The line-up of this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day has just been announced, ranging from rap mogul Kanye West to pop singer Jessica Simpson to teen singer Miranda Cosgrove. The other stars included for the festivity are Juanes, Arlo Guthrie, Gladys Knight and Big Time Rush.
The decision to mix performers with different musical styles and from different generations is meant to match the diversity of audience who tune in to watch the special celebration in person and on television, a spokesman for the parade Orlando Veras said in a statement.
While outspoken artists like Kanye usually spits expletive verses in his song, Veras assures fans the song choices and all of the performances from their musical guests are carefully decided and planned to be "family friendly." He said, "We want to make sure we are capturing people who are in the zeitgeist."

Gilles Marini came oh-so close to winning season 8 of Dancing with the Stars, but lost the mirror ball trophy to Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson. As a contestant who came on the show with no prior dance experience, the sexy Brothers & Sisters star, 34, says he wants someone in a similar situation to win the current season. But he's not very hopeful."I'd love to see a surprise, personally, but we kind of all know who is going to win," the season 8 runner-up told People at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times' Halloween Carnival at the Universal Studios back lot in Los Angeles.

It's usually not good to mix business and pleasure. And Modern Family star Rico Rodriguez, 12, learned quickly before letting his crush on TV mom Sofia Vergara, 38, come in the way of work. "At first, I had a little mom crush on her," Rodriguez told People at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times Halloween Carnival at the Universal Studios Back Lot in Los Angeles. "But then I was like, 'No,' because she plays my mom every day. So I said, 'I'll scrap that idea.' " On the other hand, Rodriquez has some buddies who are still interested in his costar.

No friendly Ronald McDonald clown in this ad. Why do other countries get ass kicking TV commercials? Its seems to always be the case and in this latest McDonald's spot that's currently running on Italian broadcast stations, Halloween and burgers get taken to the next level. Excuse the video quality but we definitely think it's creepy enough to make it on HorrorBid's top commercial list. See if you agree...

If your arm is tired after signing and needs a massage, call me!
Here at Twitterwatch, we never get to see our celebrities in person, because we never step away from the computer for fear of missing a tweet (and Logo won't spring for iPads). But it's nice to know that if we ever left our desks, in theory there are celebrities out there at book stores, restaurants, and theme parks that I could run into.
Above you can see rugby hottie, good daddy, and all around nice guy Ben Cohen out signing copies of his 2011 Ben Cohen calendar. Judging by that stack of boxes full of the date books behind him, he's just getting started. But he kept signing until everyone was happy.

Rihanna went shopping in Paris yesterday with Matt Kemp and she was acting kinda funny. From what we can decipher, she was either: a) Spraying perfume down her neckline and smelling it. b) Shoplifting in a totally unsubtle way. c) Checking for pit/breath stink. d) Telling secrets to her imaginary friend Rudy the Rude Boy, the itty bitty man who lives in her shirt, who she consults whenever she goes shopping. or e) Trying out her secret service microphone but also being really unsubtle about that too. A word to the wise - when you go shopping with a shock of Ronald McDonald hair and also you are Rihanna, everything you do is going to get caught on tape. [Photos: Splash News Online]...

Bold choice. But who wears it better? Rihanna paraded this wild animal-print Emilio Pucci dress on her way to boyfriend Matt Kemp's Hollywood birthday party earlier this month. Four days (and one long flight) later, Jada Pinkett Smith wore the same dress in Milan while attending the Diane von Furstenberg Glamour party at Fashion Week. So it comes down to this: What would you pick to pop against this long-sleeved Pucci frock: platform pumps, a black clutch and Cinnabon hair or strappy Jimmy Choo sandals and Ronald McDonald ringlets?...

On last night’s America’s Next Top Model’s makeover episode, Tyra took Kayla’s perfectly lovely, curly blond locks and replaced them with the hair of Ronald McDonald (that is, when the clown was going through his Eight is Enough phase). The result? A hairdo that made her look astonishingly like a high-fashion Danny Cooksey, a.k.a. Salute Your Short’s Budnick. (Or maybe I’ve just got ’90s on the brain.) Now, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder — after all, our Top Model recapper, Margaret Lyons, liked the cut, saying Kayla, “got...

The Boston activist group Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood has filed a petition with the FCC to block the upcoming Nickelodeon cartoon Zevo-3 which stars characters from ads for Skechers shoes and is being developed by Skechers Entertainment (!). The fears that group has is that this show will pave the way for cartoons starring the likes of Ronald McDonald and that children's entertainment will become inundated with ads. We here at Mediaite fear that any cartoon that's basically a cartoon will probably just lead to a crappy Michael Bay movie 20 years from now. Clearly, prevention is the key.

An advocacy group has asked the FCC to block a soon-to-debut show, "Zevo-3," on Viacom's Nicktoons network, because it stars animated characters originally created to market Skechers shoes to children.
Unless banned, the group argued, the show could pave the way for Ronald McDonald, Tony the Tiger and other cartoon pitchmen to become stars of their own series and make kids TV into full-length commercials, the Associated Press reported.
The complaint about the show, which is scheduled for an Oct. 11 launch, comes from Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood. The series features three super-powered heroes fighting evil in New Eden City. They have previously appeared in comic books and TV commercials promoting Skechers' line of kids footwear.
The complaint argued that the half-hour show would violate a federal limit of 12 minutes of commercial time during children's programming and the FCC's requirement of a clear separation between commercials and other content.

I fucking loathe McDonalds. I don't take my kids there, I don't condone working there, hell, I don't even contribute to Ronald McDonald House. It's vile stuff that I don't believe is fit for consumption by livestock much less human beings. That being said, I'm forced to eat that tripe once or twice every year. As a matter of fact, I was forced to eat there twice two weeks ago, as it was the only thing available that didn't involve a half hour detour to the other side of a city I was passing through. I won't take this opportunity to regale you with the science fiction-esque experience my digestive tract had after consuming a Sodium McMuffin and a Quarter Colon Spelunker with cheese suffice to say that you all should have had shares in Charmin.
The one exception I will make in my "avoid McDonalds at all costs" policy is for the McNugget.

What's gotten into Hollywood lately? Too much hair dye, apparently. Celebs like Rihanna, Katy Perry (Ok, technically that's a wig, but it's still wrong) and Juliette Lewis are running around channeling characters like Smurfette, Ronald McDonald, you name it—and they look plain silly. Maybe the chemicals are starting to affect their heads, so we feel obligated to step in here and tell them to stop this trend, before Tinseltown turns into Tiny Toons.

Could Palme d'Or veteran Mike Leigh triumph again with his delicate drama of ordinary lives? Elsewhere Robin Hood is grumpy, Oliver Stone shows signs of irony in his sequel to Wall Street, and a gruesome teen cybertale is enough to make you hit escape…
Even at this early stage, it wouldn't be too ambitious to trumpet Mike Leigh's Another Year as a leading contender for the 47th Palme d'Or. However, a fanfare seems slightly inappropriate for such a delicate film, a picture of everyday lives so achingly true and lovely and sad that one almost feels like an intruder for watching it, especially in an atmosphere as frenetic and flashbulbed as Cannes. Dedicated to his late producer Simon Channing Williams, who died as Leigh's cast began its usual pre-script improvisations last year, Another Year has an elegiac quality rare in this director's work, dealing with death, ageing, love and...
