This review seemed especially perfect coming on the heels of Dustin's Srl of the faces of NPR the other day. --Tu
The basic thesis of The New Kings of Nonfiction is that non-fiction is an art, not just a tin can in which you store facts. It Can Be Fun To Read, Y'alls. I will drink to this thesis, since reviewing books is technically non-fiction and I try to make it, more than anything, fun to read.
This book is a bound copy of Ira Glass' pile of non-fiction he gives to aspiring nonfictionists as examples of What To Do. Because they are all indicative of one man's tastes, though written by many different brains, they all have a definite feel to them. They aren't siblings but they are certainly kissing cousins. At least they are the hot cousins.

Let's face it 2009 was not such a great year for movies – at least mainstream releases anyway. There were so many films that promised to tease, tantalize or entertain us with their fancy looking trailers and the end results where less than stellar. Genre films appear to be the biggest draws at the box office with stories that focus on battles between good and evil. Represented by one or several antagonists or villains, evil within a story can often be more fascinating than good. A good villain has the power to outshine the hero with his intelligence, quick wit or twisted philosophy. Unfortunately there also seems to be an equal number of terrible villains in films. They say a film is only as good as its villain and a poorly developed villain can also ruin a picture. Sometimes it's due to bad writing, other times it is the fault of the actor.

The Clockwork Theatre is pleased to announce the cast for their upcoming production of Cherry Smoke by James McManus (winner of the 2006 Princess Grace Playwriting Award), directed by Jade King Carroll. The title role of Cherry will be portrayed by Marianna McClellan, with Jay Rohloff playing opposite her in the role of Fish. Mr. Rohloff, who serves as Clockwork's Artistic Director, was most recently seen in the company's revival of Caryl Churchill's A Number at Theatre Row in September, 2008, for which he received praise for portraying a man and two very unique clones of that man.

- Sundance got serious about fine-tuning their Park City at Midnight section this year. The section which I normally only dabble in to fill up voids in my scheduling has got enough worthy films this year that are potentially worth the detour - commencing with a film I mentioned last week -- Black Dynamite! Here are the 8 pack of films from directors like Sundance-regular Adam Bhala Lough, horror specialist Jonathan Liebesman and newcomer Ryan Shiraki. Black Dynamite / USA (Director: Scott Sanders; Screenwriters: Michael Jai White, Scott Sanders, and Byron Minns)—When 'The Man' murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, 1970s African-American action legend Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to take him on. Cast: Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Byron Minns, James McManus. World Premiere The Carter / USA (Director: Adam Bhala Lough)—An in-depth, intimate look at
