The long-running adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester made enough space for the brothers to encounter a wide array of ghosts, monsters, and other beings in Supernatural. During the show’s 15-season stint, Supernatural set a standard for horror and fantasy television, spawning its own universe with spinoffs in the same manner as other trendsetters of the genres like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Vampire Diaries. Leading men Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki got their breakout roles with the Winchester Brothers, and Supernatural similarly paved the way for the careers of other performers, such as Katie Cassidy and Misha Collins.
Given the number of seasons it spawned, the CW original also managed to put the spotlight on several familiar faces in guest roles. While the celebrity cameos of Supernatural could include stars like WWE wrestler The Miz (who aptly appeared in a wrestling-themed episode) and Jersey Shore star and...

This premiered at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival last year, where it won a bunch of awards. Sophie Thurling stars as a cancer survivor who goes out to a country house with her friends. The cast includes Andy McPhee, Roger Ward, Lucas Pittaway, Albert Goikhman, Brendan Bacon, and Daniel Reader. This looks like a wild Oz-sploitation mashup of all kinds of crazy horror concepts. And there's a killer poster for it - also seen below. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster...

‘The Faceless Man.’
The Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival (HÕFF) in Estonia may be one of the world’s more obscure festivals but entering The Faceless Man there has paid dividends for the writer-director James Di Martino.
The filmmaker and his fellow producer Daniel Facciolo had planned to attend the festival, which is due to take place from April 25-28 and may still happen online, but for obvious reasons can’t go.
However Di Martino was contacted by Josh Guttman of New York-based international sales agent Hewes Pictures and a deal was signed.
“Previously we had a sales agent lined up with the idea of launching the film at Cannes, but we had not signed,” Di Martino tells If.
“As Covid-19 will prevent any big markets for a long time, Hewes Pictures contacted me with the idea of releasing on alternative platforms and made a good offer.

Ben Geurens in ‘Locusts.’
Typifying the challenges facing the vast majority of Australian films, Heath Davis’ suspense-drama Locusts and Partho Sen-Gupta’s thriller Slam were released on a handful of screens last weekend.
Working with limited marketing budgets the distributors and producers relied primarily on reviews and publicity, and the weekend figures were commensurately modest.
Ben Geurens and Nathaniel Dean play estranged brothers who are the targets of an extortion racket in Locusts, which grossed $11,000 on 11 screens and $14,000 with previews.
Film Ink Presents is handling the theatrical release of the privately-financed film, which co-stars Jessica McNamee, Steve Le Marquand, Justin Rosniak, Andy McPhee, the late Damian Hill and Alan Dukes, while Jonathan Page’s Bonsai Films will sell the ancillary rights.

Snowtown director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant are collaborating on an Australian bushranger feature.
Grant is writing True History of the Kelly Gang, adapted from the Peter Carey novel, a co-production between Porchlight.s Liz Watts and the UK's Daybreak Pictures.
The novel is seen through Kelly.s eyes, scribbling his narrative on scraps of paper in semi-literate but descriptive prose as he fled from the police.
To his pursuers, Kelly was a monstrous criminal, a thief and a murderer. To many ordinary Australians, the bushranger was a hero, defying the authority of the English to control their lives.
Joe Penhall was listed as the writer when the project received development funding from Screen Australia.
Heath Ledger played the bushranger in Gregor Jordan's Ned Kelly in 2003 and Mick Jagger starred in Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly in 1970. The first screen version was The Story of the Kelly Gang in...

Western Dreams: Maclean’s Accomplished, Stylized Debut
Scottish musician John Maclean makes a handsome directorial debut with Slow West, a period western set mainly in 19th century Colorado. But if Sergio Leone’s famed retro genre films earned the moniker ‘spaghetti western,’ than Mclean’s recapitulation and relocation is worthy of its own unique label, perhaps an Anzac (or kiwi?) western. Maclean’s pan-Euro flavoring is exactly what gives this familiar genre piece a high dose of unexpected flair, at times comedic and bloody, while maintaining a fatal romantic fixation for a societally primordial period.
Sixteen year old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) has fled his family’s privileged heritage in Scotland to pursue his love interest, Rose Ross (Caren Pistorius), a young woman of meager means who left for America with her father (Rory McCann). Alone and running out of money as he wanders through the woods of Colorado to find the Ross’ homestead,...

In a post-apocalyptic eternal drought, people kill for water. Where it is scarce and desperately needed, a farmer, Earnest Holm, defends his land from threat, and hopes to rejuvenate his parched soil in the hope of a better life for his family. However, his daughter’s boyfriend wants the land for himself, and will go to any length to get it.
The best way to describe Bad Land is… strange. Set in the futuristic, dried out plains of the USA, this film seems to walk the line between western and science fiction. Now, if you’re like me, when those two genres are combined your mind instantly goes to Firefly. This film isn’t Firefly,...

Part I. Anger, Suez and Archie Rice
“There they are,” George Devine told John Osborne, surveying The Entertainer‘s opening night audience. “All waiting for you…Same old pack of c***s, fashionable assholes. Just more of them than usual.” The Royal Court had arrived: no longer outcasts, they were London’s main attraction.
Look Back in Anger vindicated Devine’s model of a writer’s-based theater. Osborne’s success attracted a host of dramatists to Sloane Square. There’s Shelagh Delaney, whose A Taste of Honey featured a working-class girl pregnant from an interracial dalliance; Harold Pinter’s The Room, a bizarre “comedy of menace”; and John Arden’s Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance, which aimed a Gatling gun at its audience. Devine encouraged them, however bold or experimental. “You always knew he was on the writer’s side,” Osborne said.

Those of us in California who are experiencing a record drought can somewhat relate to the dystopian sci-fi thriller Young Ones, albeit on a much smaller scale. A new trailer has been released which shows a world torn apart after water has become the most precious and valuable resource on the planet. Michael Shannon stars as a family man struggling to survive with his children Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning), although they realize Mary's boyfriend Flem Lever (Nicholas Hoult) wants to take over their land.
Jake Paltrow (The Good Night) directs this upcoming drama which arrives in theaters nationwide October 17.
Young Ones is set in a near future when water has become the most precious and dwindling resource on the planet, one that dictates everything from the macro of political policy to the detailed micro of interpersonal family and romantic relationships. The land has withered into something wretched.

Popular stalwart of film classics such as The Browning Version and Fanny By Gaslight
Jean Kent, the fiery, sexy, red-haired bad girl of British movies in the 1940s, who has died aged 92, was a fine actor, and clearly enjoyed life, her work and – while it lasted – her cinema fame. Her film breakthrough came as a result of stage work: after the revue Apple Sauce, starring Vera Lynn and Max Miller, reached the London Palladium in 1941, she was offered a long-term contract, and the first of her Gainsborough Pictures appearances came in It's That Man Again (1943), with another wartime entertainer, the radio comic Tommy Handley.

This biopic of Paul Raymond has about as much depth as a 1970s British sex comedy
Scripted by Matt Greenhalgh (who wrote the screenplays for the ambitious biopics of Ian Curtis and John Lennon, Control and Nowhere Boy), The Look of Love is a disappointingly crude and shallow biography of the self-made northern impresario Paul Raymond, who started out conducting a music hall mind-reading act and finished up as a multi-millionaire nightclub proprietor, pornographer, owner of much of Soho, and for a while the richest man in Britain. The film reunites Michael Winterbottom, director of 24 Hour Party People, and its star Steve Coogan, but whereas that wonderful portrait of the ebullient Tony Wilson and the vibrant Manchester music scene was a piece of imaginative social history, The Look of Love has about as much depth and style as a cheap British sex comedy like Can You Keep It Up for a Week?...

Home and Away's Braxton brothers are to be more divided than ever in the aftermath of their father's death. Youngest sibling Casey is facing a murder charge on Australian screens this week after shooting dad Danny (Andy McPhee) when an armed robbery went horribly wrong. The scenes, which are yet to air in the UK, saw Casey make the drastic decision when Danny ordered him to shoot an innocent man. While Brax accepts that Casey had no choice but to stop Danny in the high-pressure situation, Heath is finding it much harder to forgive his brother. Dan Ewing, who plays Heath, told TV Week of the storyline: "Heath had a lot of questions for Danny, so it creates this massive conflict between himself and Casey.
