The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.
Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.
One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

While Barbie and Oppenheimer were hogging the spotlight in 2023, a sneaky contender lurking in the shadows is now claiming its throne, and that is Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This Italian plumber and his crew managed to stomp their way to the top, surpassing the combined profits of Across the Spider-Verse and Oppenheimer.

Universal and Illumination’s smash The Super Mario Bros Movie finishes No. 1 to make it a wrap on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2023. While the industry is still coming out of Covid and the aftermath of the strikes, there’s no question about the major motion picture studios’ embrace of the theatrical downstream model; steamers such as Amazon and Apple realize the power of it too.
Last year’s wild ride saw the buckling of superhero movies, though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse underscored fanboys’ hunger for something different in the genre. The year also showed that longtime box office emperor Disney can lose its clothes sometimes — in 2023 it was its overextension and hasty execution of IP Wish, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and The Marvels. Barbie and Oppenheimer, meanwhile, showed that perhaps the biggest box office weekends are best programmed with two tentpoles in the heart of summer.

It was another tumultuous year in Hollywood thanks to the dual labor strikes in 2023, the fallout on the film pipeline and the box office remaining below pre-covid pandemic levels, among other factors.
The positive: The global box office jumped 31 percent to $33.9 billion, led by Barbenheimer. But TV studios’ financials were hit by pressure on these operations across the industry, including fallout from the dual labor disputes. What did all that mean for the studio divisions of Hollywood giants? Overall, only one studio unit among entertainment conglomerates posted profit growth for the calendar year 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter‘s calculations.
Keep in mind that financial disclosures for these units remain limited and are not easily comparable. The names alone vary: Paramount reports figures for its Filmed Entertainment unit, Warner Bros. Discovery and Comcast post results for their Studios divisions, and Sony has its Pictures unit. The businesses included in them differ as well.

‘Despicable Me 4’ CinemaCon Footage: Gru Pulls Off ‘Mission: Impossible’ Heist Armed With Diaper Bag
Gru, the recovering supervillain turned huggable and lovable dad, is back in action.
Universal premiered a new sequence from “Despicable Me 4,” the latest installment in the studio and its partner Illumination’s long-running animated franchise, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday. It featured an aspiring villainess (Joey King) as well as a new addition to the Gru family — Gru Jr., who bears a strong resemblance to his beak-nosed namesake — as they attempted a “Mission: Impossible” style heist of a heavily fortified castle. The only problem is Gru’s assistants, the Minions, brought the wrong equipment. Instead of his gear and gadgets, he is armed with only a diaper bag. That means Gru is left to deal with lasers, guards and a vicious honey badger with only diaper rash cream, baby bottles and a pacifier to protect him. It doesn’t help that Gru Jr. keeps crawling around, inadvertently setting off booby traps.

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.
The film will be produced by Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director and fellow of Nintendo and one of the most famous figures in gaming. The close collaboration between the filmmakers and Miyamoto is...

Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong touted the momentum of NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, thanks to the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, as well as such series as Ted and The Traitors, and the benefits of having a combined offering of entertainment and sports content during an appearance at an investor conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Tmt Conference in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the recently unveiled sports streaming joint venture of Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. “We’ve seen a lot of value in having sports and entertainment in one portfolio,” Armstrong responded. “Because as important as sports is, and it’s super important as an acquisition driver, it ends up being about 10 percent of our overall usage … but what are people sticking around for and doing in between sports is between our pay-one original library,...

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell make unlikely, AI-assisted cameos in the Jon Hamm-narrated Super Bowl Lviii trailer for Despicable Me 4.
Universal Pictures released the trailer Sunday, and it is set to run on CBS prior to Reba McEntire performing the National Anthem for the NFL’s big game taking place in Las Vegas. Filmmaker Chris Renaud’s animated movie hits theaters July 3, and focuses on the problems that ensue after Gru (Carell) and his family welcome Gru Jr. to their brood.
The new ad appears to tout the benefits of modern technology but features strange images supposedly generated by AI, including women exercising with extra limbs and a group of friends enjoying handfuls of spaghetti.
“Artificial intelligence is changing the world, showing us what we never thought possible, transforming the way we do business, and bringing family and friends closer together,” Hamm says in the spot.

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

Illumination Entertainment is an animation studio that sort of came out of nowhere. Led by founder and producer Chris Meledandri, the studio jumped at the scene with "Despicable Me," which remains a rather fun family movie with a cool concept (created by "Klaus" director Sergio Pablos). It also gave the world the phenomenon that is the Minions — whether that's good or bad is up to the reader to decide.
In just 17 years, the studio has found a formula that it's honed to produce some of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time, with quite the high batting average thanks to their focus on hit songs and broad humor. After the enormous success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination took a hard left turn and gave us a movie that's unlike any it had done before — "Migration."

In a medium where stop-motion chickens organize elaborate escape plans, computer-generated ducks have to do a lot more than relocate to amuse us. Illumination’s “Migration” — about a fussy duck dad who reluctantly reconsiders his fear of flying — is a cartoon in search of a concept, where the most daring idea is hiring the Oscar-nominated co-director of 2012’s “Ernest & Celestine” and asking him to abandon that movie’s unique watercolor style in favor of a relatively standard digital approach. At least the backgrounds are eye-catching, as a waddle of mallards crack jokes amid beautiful fall foliage.
In the opening scene, director Benjamin Renner teases what “Migration” might have looked like had Illumination honcho Chris Meledandri let him stick to his signature aesthetic, rather than bend it to the studio’s house style: Emerald-headed, overprotective Mack tells his kids, Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), scary bedtime stories so...

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination animation house has had a boatload of hits from Despicable Me and Minions to 2023’s global smash The Super Mario Bros Movie. But in between, this underrated (in terms of awards) producer of delightful and genuinely funny toons creates new franchises by embracing originals such as The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, winners both in my book. Now, just in time for the holidays, comes Migration, about a family of ducks on the adventure of a lifetime. It is the kind of animated entertainment that all ages will find something to like, and in terms of the creative talent involved, it is a breath of fresh air in the genre.

Founded in 2007, Illumination (formerly Illumination Entertainment) became one of America’s leading and most successful animation studios. Although founded by Chris Meledandri, a deal with NBC Universal would position Illumination under Universal Pictures in 2010, with Illumination having creative control and Universal Pictures distributing the films. Since then, Illumination has produced several feature-length movies, shorts, television specials, and series. Although Illumination has produced 32 short films, as of 2023, the Benjamin Renner-directed Migration (2023) would be the studio’s fourteenth feature film. With Migration scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, there are hopes it’ll perform successfully at the Box Office.

Peacock has hit 30 million paying subscribers, and Comcast thinks it will only continue to get bigger.
At the Ubs Global Media and Communications conference Monday morning, Comcast president Mike Cavanagh revealed the new subscribers number, adding that the average Arpu (average revenue per user) is $10 per month.
“Remember we started cold three years ago because of the change in ownership of Hulu,” Cavanagh said, adding that the company was pleased with Peacock’s growth, and is focused on growing it domestically.
Peacock, he added, is NBCUniversal’s gateway to streaming.
“We’re still very significant in distribution — as much as anybody in the traditional linear world — nothing’s going to change the gravity that that side of the business is feeling, but the infrastructure that we have as we bring it to life, in the form of Peacock, is a great is a great way to think about the game we’re trying to play,...

“Remember we started cold three years ago because of the change in ownership of Hulu,” Cavanagh said, adding that the company was pleased with Peacock’s growth, and is focused on growing it domestically.

Illumination’s upcoming film Migration is a comedy about a family of ducks trying to fly from New York to Jamaica. Writer-director Benjamin Renner makes his 3D animation debut, and John Powell wrote the score for his film. Renner told the audience Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event that Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri assured him he could pick up 3D animation on the job.
“When I do 2D, basically I have a blank page,” Renner said. “I start to draw lines. I stop as soon as what I want to express is there on paper. If I want to draw a duck, I draw three lines. Some call it minimalistic. I call it lazy.”
Renner said he found the difference between 3D and 2D is that 2D is additive, where 3D is subtractive. There are so many elements, including texture, lighting and shading, that Renner found the...

With SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP reaching a tentative deal on Wednesday, Hollywood production is preparing to resume as quickly as humanly possible, with studios in a mad dash to get their tentpoles ready to go. The industry has been preparing for a horse-trading session the last month or so, as studios have tried to figure out how to balance which productions to prioritize with actors’ promotional commitments, all while attempting to rescue the 2024 slate of blockbusters that went unfinished during the strike.
There have been waves of films shifting their release dates due to the strike, with Disney pushing two major Marvel movies out of 2024 entirely and Sony delaying “Venom 3” to November.
So where does the slate stand right now? TheWrap spoke to multiple individuals at the major studios to get an update on which tentpoles they feel will make their release dates, and which ones are in danger of being delayed.
