Producer-star Richard Widmark may have thought he was inventing a new kind of spy film but his adaptation of an Alistair MacLean novel just grinds the Cold War grist, mixing good atmosphere with unconvincing action derring-do. The handsome production makes good use of Austrian and Swiss locations and the unfamiliar cast is a big assist. German star Sonja Ziemann gets the plum role, but Hollywood’s discovery is the lovely Senta Berger.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Sometimes new information about a highly anticipated film comes from huge publicity unveilings. And sometimes they come from a photographer’s social media account. Today’s new look at Suicide Squad is both, depending on where you go first in the morning. Clay Enos — who has been the official on-set photographer for several DC Films — shared the following new photo of Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Monster T (Common) from the height of their decadent criminal empire. The photo was also shared on EW, along with a bunch more. To date, this is the best photo of Monster T that we've seen, and I can’t be 100% sure, but it looks like the character is holding the Joker’s pistol. #Repost @ewphotodept ??? Every time Mr J (@JaredLeto) and Harley (@MargotRobbie) were together, I couldn't make enough photos. Here they are, up to their notorious hijinks, with a tattooed @Common!

Will the real Jane Austen please stand up? The Jane Austen Centre unveiled a waxwork likeness of the Pride and Prejudice author in Bath, England, on Wednesday, the closest "anyone has come to the real Jane Austen for 200 years," a spokesperson for the Centre says. Until now, the only accepted portrait of the writer was a sketch done by Austen's sister Cassandra in 1810. This sketch was the starting point for the waxwork, which was constructed with the help of former FBI forensic artist Melissa Dring. In a piece over at Vanity Fair, Skyfall director Sam Mendes takes a break from preparing for Bond 24 to offer up 25 Rules for Directors in his acceptance speech as the Roundabout Theatre Company paid the director tribute at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. Here are my favorites: 1. Always choose good collaborators. It seems so obvious, but the best collaborators are the ones who disagree with you. It means they're passionate, they have opinions, and they'll only ever say yes if they mean it. 4. Learn to say, "I don't know the answer." It could be the beginning of a very good day's rehearsal. 8. Confidence is essential, but ego is not. 10. Buy a good set of blinkers. Do not read reviews. It's enough to know whether they're good or they're bad. When I started, artists vastly outnumbered commentators, and now, there are a thousand published public opinions for every work of art.

Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games book series has often been compared with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels, primarily because both center on a young female protagonist and have become phenomenons for their shared young-adult demo. This is arguably an insult to the novel and the big-screen adaptations, since The Hunger Games is leagues above Twilight in artistic credibility. The sense of familiarity of The Hunger Games goes much further back, recalling everything from William Golding to Phillip K. Dick to even Stephen King. Here are 12 films that come highly recommended, and should be essential viewing for any fan of the Hunger Games franchise.

Hugh Grant is currently fifty-two-years-old, but that doesn’t mean that the actor is in any way ready to stop looking for love – at least, in the cinematic sense. Grant is now signed on to star in yet another Marc Lawrence film that will see the befuddled Brit attempting to make a go of it in surely hilarious ways. The pair have previously worked together on all three Lawrence’s directorial features, starting with Two Weeks Notice, on to Music and Lyrics, and culminating with Did You Hear About the Morgans? In case you’re wondering, yes, those films have gotten progressively worse, so Lawrence and Grant have their work cut out for them when it comes to their as-yet-untitled next film. Also, yes, clearly, Grant is Lawrence’s muse. This next film will see Grant as “Ray Michaels,” a character who was, as of “1998…on top of the world — a witty, sexy...

Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games series has often been compared with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels primarily because both centre on a young female protagonist and somehow both became phenomenons for their shared young-adult demo. Personally, I think this is both an insult to the novel and the latest big screen adaptation, since The Hunger Games is leagues above Twilight in artistic credibility. The sense of familiarity of The Hunger Games in fact goes much further back, recalling everything from William Golding to Phillip K. Dick and even Stephen King. Here are several films which may or may not have inspired Gary Ross’s big screen adaptation – eleven films which come highly recommended and should be essential viewing for any fan of the soon-to-be billion dollar franchise.

Stockholm -- Swedish actor Erland Josephson, who collaborated with legendary film director Ingmar Bergman in more than 40 films and plays, has died. He was 88.
The award-winning actor died at a Stockholm hospital on Saturday following a long battle against Parkinson's disease, said Royal Dramatic Theatre spokeswoman Christina Bjerkander.
Josephson was born into a family of artists and culture workers in Stockholm in 1923 and would become the actor who had the longest-running collaboration with Bergman. The two first met when Josephson was just 16 and participated as an amateur actor in the play "The Merchant of Venice," directed by Bergman.
Although he never had any formal acting education, Josephson continued to appear in several Bergman stage plays in the 1940s and 50s, and received a minor part in 1946 film "It Rains on Our Love." In the late 50s he played larger roles in Bergman's films "The Magician" and "Brink of Life," but...

Well we all knew this would happen. Back in February, when Criterion announced their epic digital streaming partnership with Hulu, they also quietly revealed that their streaming options on Netflix would be coming to an end over the course of the next year. While I haven’t been paying close attention to the Criterion Collection films that have been expiring since that announcement was made, I thought it would be helpful to all of you loyal Netflix subscribers to know that in about twelve days, 26 titles will be expiring on the 26th of May, 2011.
I’ve gone and linked to all of the titles below, so you can click on the cover art or the text, and be taken to their corresponding Netflix pages. While this isn’t everything that Criterion has to offer on Netflix, it is a nice chunk of really important films. If you don’t currently have a Netflix subscription,...

Darren Aronofsky may have young hipster's cred, established with his fast-cut, technically daring early features "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream." But look closely and you'll see a purveyor of old-fashioned melodramas.
While the Brooklyn-born director often shows a surface fascination with the frazzled postmodern condition, à la the films of far chillier contemporaries such as Christopher Nolan, David Fincher or the Wachowski brothers, the core of his hot-blooded weepies are about lovers and mothers, fathers and daughters -- the traditional stuff of family melodrama, in which "characters made for operettas play out the tragedies of mankind," according to film theorist Thomas Elsaesser.
Though "Pi's" Maximillian Cohen may be the least obvious of Aronofsky's melodramatic characters, the severe-minded mathematical fanatic echoes Elsaesser's observation that the "true pathos" of the melodrama derives from "the very mediocrity of the human beings involved, putting such high demands upon themselves trying to live...

Traditionally, adaptations of the Mahabharata have been jinxed, Mani Ratnam.s Raavan bombing at the box-office, being the prime example. But Prakash Jha.s successful adaptation of the epic in Raajneeti has given him the confidence to direct carry his affinity to the grand epic even further.Prakash Jha will now go ahead with his long-cherished dream of adapting the Draupadi section of the Mahabharata to the large screen. This is a project that he had wanted to make two years ago with Madhuri Dixit in the lead. But the budget and the inherent suspicion of Mahabharata adaptations kept Jha from taking the plunge. But now he.s all set to make Drapaudi , and that too as an international film in English with an international cast and crew.Says Jha, .Draupadi is the ultimate tribute to womanhood. I.ve wanted to make it for years. Yes, Madhuri was my choice earlier.
