Among the pandemic’s many side effects, it created a unique capacity to force even the most august institutions to experience identity crises and growing pains. And in the film industry, perhaps no organization has felt this syndrome more acutely than the Sundance Institute.
“We have to look back at how do we sustain Sundance, for the future,” Michelle Satter, director of Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program, told me. “We’re in a moment of stepping back and making tough decisions. You have to prioritize, and build back.”
After longtime festival director John Cooper left in 2020, Sundance veteran Tabitha Jackson took over; she stepped down June 7 and the festival now seeks a new leader. Dee Rees is a tall woman of fierce charisma. She’s the kind of director who talks fast, ideas coming so quickly that those less inclined can barely keep up. And yet her output has been slow: After Focus Features snapped up her breakout 2011 feature debut “Pariah” at Sundance, it was four years before HBO Film’s Emmy and DGA-award-winning 2015 biopic “Bessie.”
“There’s an assumption that men who do small personal movies can leap to deliver larger things,” said “Bessie” producer Shelby Stone. “It’s much harder for women.”
Finally, we get to see Rees fulfill her promise with “Mudbound,” a Sundance triumph that set the 2017 festival sales record with its $12.5 million sale to Netflix, and opened AFI Fest November 9 after wowing crowds at seven film festivals.

The snow first started falling in Park City on Thursday, and it didn't stop until Tuesday. I was hoping for a snowy Sundance this year, but not this much snow. The 2017 Sundance Film Festival has been one of the snowiest Sundances in a long time. I've been attending for 11 years, and I can't remember it being as snowy and wet and cold as this year. Everyone is talking about it, even Sundance Director John Cooper, and pretty much every last attendee who has to trudge through the piles of snow and slippery sidewalks to get to screenings around Park City, Utah. But, of course, it's the snow that makes this a magical festival unlike any other and no matter what, the show must go on. So we bundle up, throw on some boots, and head back out. Everyone here braving the snow and cold is doing so in the name of cinema.

Main Street was inundated during Saturday’s March On Main as approximately 4,000 people according to police estimates took over Park City.
Marchers resisted the snow and low temperatures to bear placards in support of women’s rights, the environment and healthcare as a strong anti-Donald Trump sentiment rippled through the crowd. At time of writing there had been no arrests.
The march was one of 350 sister events across the Us and 20 countries in conjunction with the huge Women’s March On Washington on the first day of the 45th Us president’s term of office.
“Hello all you pussies!” actress Mara Bello told the assembled Park City crowd. “When they punch you in the pussy, punch them back with your pussy power.”
Bello’s comments drew prolonged cheers and were in reference to Trump’s notorious 2005 remarks about groping women that came to light late last year.

The Women’s March on Main hit Park City on a snowy Saturday morning, turning the first weekend of Sundance into a very different kind of must-attend event. Despite the frigid cold weather, turnout was high and the crowd remained energized during the march and hour-long parking lot rally, which spilled out around the surrounding hills and streets.
Despite the slow traffic — packed shuttles and lines of cars stretched down the ski town’s main thoroughfares and out of town as women and men flocked in from Salt Lake City and local environs — the mood was jovial, and at least one shuttle broke out into a chat of “this is what democracy looks like!” before even arriving at the rally.
Marchers included such Sundance Film Festival attendees as Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, carrying a Planned Parenthood sign and wearing “I’m with Meryl” stickers on her parka, John Legend, and...

For every Sundance Film Festival movie that sells for a big sum, there’s another one that doesn’t.
While hordes of buyers scatter throughout Park City over the next week, a Sundance premiere from two years ago quietly hits theaters on January 27 with little fanfare. “I Am Michael,” Justin Kelly’s perceptive and troubling look at gay-activist-turned-Christian-pastor Michael Glatze (James Franco), hits theaters and VOD long after the Sundance hype has moved on. It’s a missed opportunity for the movie, in which Franco gives one his most complex performances, as audiences struggle alongside the character’s tragic sense of conflict with his faith.
At a divided moment in American history, it’s a shrewd look at conflicting values at the root of modern society. But no distributor took a gamble on it when its fleeting spotlight in Utah came and went; now, dumped onto digital platforms at the start of the year,...

Robert Redford officially kicked off the 2017 Sundance Film Festival Thursday by defining the festival’s role under the incoming Trump administration. During the fest’s opening day press conference, held at the Egyptian Theater, Redford stated that Sundance doesn’t “play advocacy” and tries to stick to the stories.

“The idea is that presidents come and go. The pendulum swings back and forth…so we don’t occupy ourselves with politics,” Redford said. “The idea of us being involved in politics is just not so. We stay away from that because we feel that it’s far more important to support the storytellers and let them tell the stories. If politics comes up in their stories, that’s fine, but we do not take a position.”

Robert Redford may not want the Sundance Film Festival to be focused on politics, but there was no avoiding it at the opening press conference where Friday's inauguration of Donald Trump was a prevalent topic of conversation. Politics looks set to overshadow Utah film festival’s 2017 edition, with a march by women film-makers, a documentary on Donald Trump’s presidential victory, and a slew of films on climate change. Then there’s Jack Black’s skit on polka
The first film on the screening schedule for the 2017 edition of the Sundance film festival is Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, a follow-up to his 2006 Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Truth to Power is Gore’s second blast of righteous rhetoric in the cause of climate activism, but the screening has taken on a new urgency as the festival, which starts on 19 January in Park City, Utah will be preoccupied by events 3,000 miles away. The presidential inauguration of Donald Trump takes place in Washington DC on Friday, the festival’s second day, and is likely to cast its shadow over the entire event.

The inauguration of President-Elect Donald Trump is January 20, 2017 — which is also the first full day of the Sundance Film Festival. That’s already inspired multiple festival attendees to discuss how they might arrange marches or protests, and now the festival has gone on the record to say that they will help connect any group who wishes to demonstrate with Park City so they can effectively organize.

Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper and head programmer Trevor Groth had to make hundreds of decisions to sort through the 4,068 feature-length films and 8,985 shorts that were submitted for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and they were in the thick of their final decisions as the election’s final phase unfolded. It turned out that there’s nothing like the election of Donald Trump to throw the 38-year-old festival’s purpose into sharp relief.
“We were were affected,” admitted Cooper. “It made us take stock in what we do and the nature of independent film in general, the growing necessity and power of it in some ways. It had been 25 days since the Pulse shooting in Orlando, but the effects of the attack on the nightclub reverberated on the nation’s opposite coast at the beginning of the 34th Outfest Los Angeles Lgbt Festival.

There are indie film scenes like the one chronicled in Actor Martinez everywhere, ones where those with a day job have ambitions that cannot and never will pay the rent. Surely, Actor Martinez is a little cruel to these micro industries of regional film bolstered by film clubs that support each other regardless of just how poor the acting, directing and cinematography can be.
Enter Nathan Silver and Mike Ott, filmmakers that seem obsessed with the freedom such non-traditional, off-the-map filmmaking offers. Who knows, a masterpiece may exist somewhere in Denver’s amateur film community, kept from us by John Cooper and Janet Pierson. Actor Martinez, like Nathan Silver’s previous feature Stinking Heaven, also feels like an artifact, documenting the process of a process: here the every day life of Arthur Martinez, an professional computer repairman by day and actor/film producer by night.
