Robert Pattinson will enter the lead actor Oscar race for his role alongside Willem Dafoe in “The Lighthouse.” (Via Variety.) A24’s decision to submit Pattinson in the category means Dafoe will compete for best supporting actor.
The mens’ performances in the film, which opens Oct. 18, have been lauded on the festival circuit, where writer-director Robert Eggers has taken home a handful of awards, including Cannes’ Fipresci Prize.
It seemed like a tossup as to whether Dafoe, who plays a crotchety and possibly mad lighthouse keeper, or Pattinson as his protege, would enter the lead race. The film is claustrophobically centered around the two men, their shared bedroom, their drinking binges, and their work on a tiny island somewhere in the Atlantic.
But it’s Pattinson who has a slight edge on Dafoe when it comes to screen time and the audience is given a clearer, more intimate look into his psyche and routine,...

As the Oscar race starts to come into focus at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, heated debates are raging among distributors, agents, and managers about which categories their movie stars should vie for. It’s a game that Oscar strategists play to win. Increasingly, that means moving talent out of a leading role and into a supporting one.
The decision makers behind “Ford v. Ferrari” (Fox/Disney), “The Lighthouse” (A24) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Sony) are all trying to figure out where to put their lead actors. Netflix has already decided to place the veteran stars of its two-hander “The Two Popes” into two categories: never-nominated Jonathan Pryce (as protagonist Pope Francis) with more screen time will be lead, with Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins (as antagonist Pope Benedict) in supporting. And Sony is placing Matthew Rhys in lead, Tom Hanks in supporting for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

The Telluride Film Festival has a tradition of opening up with an anticipated world premiere, and the patron screening of James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” did not disappoint. Back in 2005, Mangold screened his Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” here in Colorado, and the film won Reese Witherspoon a Best Actress Academy Award.
“Ford v Ferrari,” which releases November 15, 2019, from Fox/Disney, should yield a slew of awards nominations, including for director James Mangold and co-stars Matt Damon and three-time nominee Christian Bale (who won Supporting Actor for “The Fighter”). How they break down this even two-hander is another Oscar season quandary.
Despite a hefty 152-minute running time (a trend this fall), the bone-rattlingly intense “Ford v Ferrari” is a tight, taut, percussive, and emotional commercial entertainment that puts audiences inside the real-life drama behind race car driver-turned-designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and gifted, tightly wound driver Ken Miles...

Christian Bale and Matt Damon lend serious star power to James Mangold's explosive racing drama, Ford v Ferrari.
James Mangold has made more than a few movies about tough guys in tough situations going the distance. Be it Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, Christian Bale's rancher in 3:10 to Yuma, or the goshdarn Wolverine himself in Logan, it's a theme present in many of his best movies. And now it's hitting the race track in Ford v Ferrari, a new high-octane racing drama that's based on a true story. One which reunites him with Bale and also teams him with Matt Damon, no less. Here is what you need to know.

As Disney and Fox continue to navigate a still very fresh partnership, Wednesday afternoon’s CinemaCon presentation offered first looks at a handful of films that will now be released under the Disney banner, former Fox properties that have found themselves an unexpected new home. That means that, tucked alongside major tentpole offerings and an increasingly impressive series of live-action remakes, there now live movies like James Mangold’s fact-based racing drama. It’s a new world for everyone, it seems.
Based on A.J. Baime’s book “Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed,” the film has been through various incarnations over the years, and was at one point to be directed by Michael Mann, before being kicked over to Joseph Kosinski with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starring. Now, the film stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale, and its take on the wild true story of...

Perhaps newly-minted Disney employee and Fox Film vice chairman Emma Watts said it best herself: movies like the studio’s “Ford v. Ferrari” are “an endangered species.”
Lucky, then, that Disney inherited the film earlier this month when it acquired 21st Century Fox, and Watts along with it to continue in her role as production president and one of the top creative forces. Watts presented the film to global movie theater owners on Wednesday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The film, a muscular look at the engineer and driver who overcame the odds to build a race car for Ford that challenged Ferrari’s dominance, could be an Oscar contender for Fox and its new parent company, Walt Disney Studios.
‘Ford v. Ferrari’ has always been a mystery with megawatt talent — Christian Bale and Matt Damon star, James Mangold (“Logan”) directs the true story. The Ford car was designed to...

20th Century Fox Vice Chairman Emma Watts ended Fox’s part of the Disney session with the first trailer of James Mangold’s Ford v. Ferrari.
The trailer open’s on Christian Bale’s cocky race car driver Ken Miles who is with his son at sunset at a racetrack: “Look there, there’s a perfect light.”
Matt Damon’s Carroll Shelby is asked by Jon Bernthal’s Lee Iacocca “to build the greatest sports car ever”
“It’s not about speed, it’s about survival,” said Shelby, “You need a car that’s better than anything Enzo Ferrari comes up with.”
Miles tells Shelby, “You think these guys will let you build the car you want, the way you want it?”
Lots of vrroom here, all played against the Rolling Stones’ “Gimmie Shelter” in the trailer.
Walt Disney Studios President of Production followed the trailer and so wowed, he...

20th Century Fox said that it will release James Mangold’s untitled Ford Vs. Ferrari movie on November 15, 2019, putting it squarely into the film awards-season corridor. It had been dated for June 28 and now takes over the mid-month slot previously held by Matthew Vaughn’s next Kingsman movie.
That pic, which will serve as a prequel to the previous two Kingsmen movies, will now be released February 14, 2020.
Fox also solidified another 2020 bow, setting a July 3 release for the Ryan Reynolds-Shawn Levy team-up Free Guy.
Mangold’s Ford-Ferrari movie stars Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby Carroll and current Oscar Best Actor nominee Christian Bale as British driver Ken Miles and centers on a team of American engineers and designers dispatched by Ford to build a new race car to defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.
