Fremantle Completes Asacha Deal
Fremantle has completed its big-money acquisition of Death in Paradise producer Asacha Media Group. The super-indie notified this morning that the deal, which was revealed several weeks ago, has gone through, and will see the Poor Things maker acquire the group from Asacha’s founding partners, managers and funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management. Fremantle hasn’t revealed how much Asacha cost but has said it has spent more than €200M ($216M) on both Asacha and 80% of Singapore’s Beach House Pictures since the start of this year. Fremantle takes hold of an eight-label group including Death in Paradise producer Red Planet, Arrow Media and Italy’s Stand By Me. Headquartered in Paris, France, Asacha will continue to be run by Co-Founder and Group CEO Gaspard de Chavagnac who will report to Fremantle’s Andrea Scrosati. No two people feel the exact same way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of this year’s Oscar movies. Here's Ben Miller and Eric Blume on The Color Purple…
Ben: When it comes to Blitz Bazuwale's The Color Purple, I am supremely positive on the film. It's nice to have a film filled with unbridled energy and verve. I don't necessarily see it as a big loser when it comes to Oscar, but I think it deserves much more than it got.
What are your generalized thoughts on the film's quality?
Eric: Ah Ben we're going to have a good time with this one! I watched The Color Purple with my jaw dropped, finding it almost unfathomable how terrible it was. Like, I couldn't quite believe it...

No two people feels the exact same way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of this year’s Oscar movies. Here's Ben Miller and Nick Taylor on The Zone of Interest...
Ben: Hey Nick! I will freely admit that The Zone of Interest haunted me in a way that I won't soon forget. I consider it among the absolute best of the year and one of the most impactful Holocaust films to come out in some time. The praise for the film is near universal, so I know that you thought it was just as exceptional as I did. We can be in agreement, and then call it a day. Quick and painless...you thoughts?
Nick: I am definitely haunted by it! There’s plenty to admire in Jonathan Glazer’s direction, and I can’t deny I was taken aback by its provocations when I watched it.

Death In Paradise returns to our screens in February, and the BBC have released plot and cast details.
Death In Paradise has been one of the BBC’s most successful dramas in recent years. Created by Robert Thorogood in 2011, the show’s thirteenth series is about to hit our screens. It has seen Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon and current detective Ralf Little solve a remarkably high number of murders for such a small Caribbean island.
Last year, Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman starred in spin-off Beyond Paradise, which paired him with Not Going Out star Sally Bretton and relocated the action to Cornwall. Proving popular with viewers, it recently returned for a Christmas special and a second series will be broadcast this year.
A further spin off, entitled Return to Paradise was announced last year, with action taking place in Australia.

Team Experience is discussing each Oscar category as we head into the precursors. Here's Ben Miller and Cláudio Alves to talk Best Supporting Actress...
So far, Da'Vine Joy Randolph has won Everything.
Ben: Alright Cláudio, my Portuguese pal...let's dive into Best Supporting Actress.
It's a funny year when it comes to the supporting ladies, because we actually seem to be pretty devoid of any category fraud in the main contenders. With Lily Gladstone and Carey Mulligan in their correct categories, this race feels wide open. Here's my big question: why does this happen every year with actresses and never with actors? I'm glad they are striving to get it correct, but "people" also argue that Gladstone would be walking away with this category if she was still placed here.
Do you think Gladstone or Mulligan would win if they were here, and do you think they should be? I...

The fall film festival season is upon us, but with a notable exception. The usual lineup of Hollywood A-listers are (mostly) absent due to studio greed and the continuing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. But so far, the date of the 96th Oscars haven't moved. Unless the strikes are resolved more quickly than anyone believes they will be, the best films and performances will have to go toe-to-toe without the benefit of a robust campaign.
But what does an Oscar campaign look like if you aren't allowed to campaign? ...

Though no such voting was done in 2021 or 2022, the Gold Diggers are back with a new group of over forty folks who write about the cinematic arts, including some members of Team Experience, like Nick Taylor, Ben Miller and myself. Diversity of identity and thought is prized above all else, a plurality of opinions coming together in idiosyncratic fashion, widely different ballots all around, even if just the first half of 2023 was considered. Specifically, US release dates were judged, despite the voting body including numerous nationalities. Whether they opened in theaters or streaming, these films reach nearly 800 eligible titles – a fantastic bounty of cinema.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won the box office weekend. The sheer amount of money the film made might have been a bit surprising. With $120+ million, Spider-Verse had the second biggest opening weekend of 2023, only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. What's even more impressive is the improvement over its predecessor. Into the Spider-Verse only made $190 million its entire domestic run. This sequel should easily surpass that number.

I am not prone to hyperbole but I'm having a difficult time not calling Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse the greatest animated film ever made. Maybe some time and distance will back that up. For now, let's call it a monumental feat of both animation and entertainment.
Following the events of Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales (again voiced by Shameik Moore) is now protecting his city and universe as its Spider-Man. He encounters a new and inexperienced villain named The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), which attracts the attention of multiversal Spider-Men...

Surprising absolutely no one, the 10th entry in the Fast and the Furious series Fast X won the box office weekend. What was surprising was the muted opening box office of only $67.5 million. That's the lowest opening for that series since Tokyo Drift in 2006 (unless you count Hobbs and Shaw which opened with $60 million in 2019). Comparatively, these films make the same amount of domestic money, so you can expect anywhere from $170-$200 million total. Worldwide is where these films really make their paydays, so keep expecting these things to keep being made. In fact, each film since Fast Five has made over $500 million outside of North America...

It was a Chris Pratt-dominated weekend as the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 easily won the weekend box office with around $114 million. It's certainly below the norm for other MCU films, but largely positive critical reviews (81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an "A" CinemaScore should give the film legs compared to other recent Marvel films. The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues it's box office reign as the highest grossing film of 2023. I am not a woman. I did not grow up with any sisters. My personal experience never crossed paths with Judy Blume books. All that being said, Kelly Fremon Craig's (The Edge of Seventeen) film adaptation of Blume's classic bestseller Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. transcends any genre bias to you might bring to it. It's one of the best films of the year so far.

Margaret is not only at a transitional period in life with the move, but on the brink of puberty and all that comes with it. If that wasn't enough, Margaret finds herself on a quest to find God, stuck between the Christian and Jewish faiths...

For the third straight week, The Super Mario Bros. Movie ran away with the weekend box office, this time to the tune of $59.9 million. That's good for the 7th-best third weekend in history. The domestic total currently sits at $436 million with a matching number overseas. At $870 million and climbing, expect it to become a billion dollar film (and probably franchise) in the upcoming weeks. Couterprogramming did pretty good for the horror sequel Evil Dead Rise with a solid $24.5 million haul. That's equivalent to its 2013 predecessor, which ended at around $54 million. For the seventh straight week, a new film at the box office is the new number one. There was little doubt The Super Mario Bros. Movie would dominate, but I don't think anyone saw how much it would make. The Nintendo/Illumination film make a whopping $166 million over the long Easter weekend. That's good for the third-best Easter weekend opening ever behind Furious 7 and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Elsewhere, the numbers two, three, and four film were all real close with John Wick: Chapter 4, Ben Affleck's Air, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves around $15-16 million. Those are some pretty solid numbers for counterprogramming to the kid-centric Mario. Movies are back, baby!

Studios are finally starting to get with the program. For the sixth straight week, a new release was tops at the box office with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comfortably winning the weekend behind very positive critical (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience (A- CinemaScore) notices. D&d was the first of the six films not to be a sequel, but you can only expect so much of the 2023 film landscape. Regardless, it's nice to have more films being regularly released on the schedule.

Is there any corner of the globe left untouched by the British crime drama? If it’s not Kenneth Branagh stalking through the inky expanses of the Swedish winter, or Roger Allam quaffing rosé in Provence, it’s Ralf Little, Ben Miller, Kris Marshall or Ardal O’Hanlon nicking killers (and evading taxes) in Guadeloupe. Now, British crime turns its attention to the Costa del Sol with A Town Called Malice (Sky Max). a pulpy, blood-soaked vision of Brits abroad. “Death arrives on the Costa,” growls the local Spanish detective. “I like it.”
Gene (Jack Rowan) is the youngest of the Lord brothers, heirs-apparent to a south-London crime family. But he’s different, determined to make it as a newspaper journalist. “My family couldn’t lie in bed straight, but that’s not me,” he tells Cindy (Tahirah Sharif), a beautiful bartender. It's that time of year again! Every year since 2017, this is the piece I most look forward to writing. The Oscars always throw a few curveballs with their clip choices. They certainly made some choices this year. Let's rank the clips 20 to 1.
I'm gonna not be selfish. I'm gonna be your mom.
What Are We Doing?
20. Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
19. Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All At Once
18. Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All At Once
For all three of these performers, their roles had big showy moments that were tailor-made for Oscar clips. Instead, they went with odd choices...

Team Experience is discussing the various Oscar categories. Here's Ben Miller, Elisa Guidici, and Nick Taylor discussing Best Supporting Actor.
Nick Taylor: Hi there, Elisa and Ben! Boy do I feel like we have the easiest acting category to evaluate for this year’s ceremony. Eric Blume and Chris James went over this category over two months ago and though their predictions didn't exactly match they both foresaw 4/5ths of Oscar’s lineup. My predictions were rubber-stamping the SAG list, so seeing Judd Hirsch and especially Brian Tyree Henry get in at the last minute felt like a real surprise to me. Ke Huy Quan, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan made it as they were expected to, and even with Keoghan scoring a win with BAFTA, I think Quan’s looking like the most secure acting winner going into Oscar night.
With that being said, and before we get too far into the race,...

Team Experience is discussing each Oscar category in the lead up to the ceremony. Here's Ben Miller and Eurocheese to talk Best Editing
Ben Miller: Well Eurocheese, we're back again. Pre-nominations, Nick Taylor and I talked about Best Editing being more of an alternative Best Picture lineup. Low-and-behold, all five Editing nominees are also up for Best Picture. Before we get to talking about the actual nominees, let's pour one out for films that should have gotten a notice in this category. Personally, I thought the editing in All Quiet on the Western Front was pretty spectacular. When it comes to coherent action sequences, my main gripe is a sense of place and atmosphere. For a while, any action or war film was edited with insanity and incoherence. God bless George Miller because Mad Max: Fury Road showed a first-class way to convey clear, heart-pumping action without throwing you out of sorts.

Super Bowl weekend has never been a hotbed of film dollars, and this weekend was no different. Magic Mike's Last Dance, the third and final entry in Steven Soderbergh's male stripper series, won the weekend with a sub-$10 million opening. That doesn't happen very often in the world of big budgets. In fact, in the 21st century (excluding Covid openings), only Bangkok Dangerous and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star had a worse opening and still managed to top their weekends. That being said, the film only opened on 1,500 screens, so the per-screen average was pretty solid. Second and third both belonged to director James Cameron. Avatar: The Way of Water continues to work its way up all-time charts, but the re-release of Cameron's 1997 Oscar-winner Titanic added a respectable total for a 25-year-old film.

It only took eight weeks, but Avatar: The Way of Water is no longer the top film at the box office. M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin and the award-winning ladies of 80 for Brady both managed to top James Cameron's sequel, though not with any overwhelming numbers. Both films managed just north of $14 and $12 million, respectively. More than anything else, it's just nice to have some competition and new things to watch in theaters. Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s biggest shows. The drama series is based on the believed Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn. Since the series debuted, fans have been delighted with the romance and glamour of the 19th-century regency era in Britain. Season 3 is currently in production. The upcoming season will center on the relationship between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
Colin will have a major character evolution in Bridgerton Season 3.
(L to R) Ben Miller as Lord Featherington, Polly Walker as Portia Featherington, Bessie Carter as Prudence Featherington, Harriet Cains as Phillipa Featherington, Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton and Ruby Barker as Marina Thompson | Nick Briggs/Netflix Penelope and Colin won’t be on speaking terms when ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 begins
At the end of the second season of Bridgerton, Penelope was absolutely crushed when she overheard Colin telling his friends he would never view her in a romantic way.

Yes, Avatar: The Way of Water won the box office battle for the seventh straight week. Yes, it's now one of four highest-grossing films in history (the third James Cameron-directed film to achieve that). Yes, it will end up being one of the biggest domestic hits in history. But, I'm much more interested in the rest of the box office. Following Tuesday's Oscar nods, several of the big contenders received a much needed expansion and a little financial boost...

Hollywood is becoming exceedingly lazy in getting out new films these days. Maybe it's the hangover from the pandemic, or maybe economics are finally starting to catch up with studios. Regardless, Avatar: The Way of Water stayed comfortably at the top box office spot for the sixth week. James Cameron's film is now the 13th-highest grossing domestic hit and the sixth film (and third Cameron film) to gross 2 billion worldwide. The only new release of note was Missing, the psuedo-sequel to 2019's Searching. Budgeted at a reasonable 7 million, it made back its money in one week. Good reviews (82 on Rotten Tomatoes) could help its legs in the coming weeks...

With an extra day at the weekend box office, Avatar: The Way of Water and M3GAN both repeated at the top two spots, while continuing to show impressive legs. The Way of Water droped less than 30 in its fifth week, adding another 30+ million to its domestic total. It's already up to 1.9 billion worldwide, and it should become the sixth film in history to surpass 2 billion next week. It's also currently 13th all-time in domestic gross and will probably end up in the top ten. As for M3GAN, the film only dropped 40 in its second week, which is great for a horror film. Budgeted at only 12 million, horror continues to be the best bang for your buck in films these days.

As Smile and The Black Phone proved in 2022, no genre gets more bang for their buck than horror. Avatar: The Way of Water was the top draw at theaters this weekend, but it's the murderous robot M3GAN that made the biggest splash. Budgeted at a mere 12 million, Gerard Jonstone's film grossed a shocking 30 million to go along with jubiliant critical praise (93 on Rotten Tomatoes!). After all, she is our new horror princess. The Way of Water managed just a 33 drop in its fourth week with 45 million as it barrells it's way towards 2 billion worldwide. Despite only being in theaters for four weeks, it's the seventh highest grossing movie of all-time. James Cameron cannot miss (at least financially).

No two people feel the same exact way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of each of the big awards season movies this year. Here’s Ben Miller and Eurocheese to argue over The Fabelmans
Eurocheese: Ben, I've never been a huge Spielberg defender, so here's my chance! I was bound to see The Fabelmans through rose-colored glasses because I saw its glowing reception with Steven Spielberg and John Williams in person at the AFI Festival. Even so, scene after scene landed with me and I left the theater smiling ear-to-ear. I'm curious to hear what didn't land with you...

No two people feel the same exact way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of each of the big awards season movies this year. Here’s Chris James, Ben Miller and Glenn Dunks duking it out over Babylon.
Chris: Hey Glenn and Ben, happy to chat with you on the most talked about/least seen movie of the holiday season. Oscar winner Damien Chazelle's big budget tale, Babylon, opened with 3.6 million over the holiday weekend. I hate to be the person to kick a movie when it's down. It benefits no one for an original auteur project to flop. However, I found Babylon to be an all-out disaster. Its grand scale debauchery grows stale with each passing scene, with nothing ever exuding sexiness or splendor.
Much could be saved if Chazelle had a clear thesis with the movie, or engaging characters to follow.

In a refreshing change of pace, the long holiday weekend box office was full of good news! Pretty much every film was up following that storm-stifling Christmas weekend. Nothing new debuted in wide release, so Avatar: The Way of Water was able to actually increase from the week before. James Cameron's movies typically have remarkable legs. Its 67.4 million haul was good enough to place it as the third best third weekend of all-time, behind the film's predecessor and The Force Awakens. Very good company to be in, box office-wise. But it wasn't just Avatar. Of the top 16 films at the box office, 13 increased from the week before!

The Loneliest Boy In The World: "When a sheltered and unsocialized young man is tasked with making new friends after the sudden and devastating death of his mother, he decides that digging a few up (literally) might be his best bet in the (soon-to-be) cult classic horror-comedy The Loneliest Boy In The World, debuting on Blu-ray™ and DVD December 20 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Directed by Martin Owen (The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud), The Loneliest Boy In The World stars Max Harwood (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes), Evan Ross (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2), Tallulah Haddon (The Last Duel), Hammed Animashaun (A Midsummer Night's Dream), social media phenom and musician Jacob Sartorius, newcomer Zenobia Williams and Sam Coleman (Leatherface), as well as Ashley Benson, and Ben Miller (”Bridgerton”).

The Loneliest Boy In The World is billed as a modern fairytale—except with zombies.

Avatar: The Way of Water made most of the money from this weekend's box office. James Cameron's follow-up to 2009's Avatar was the unsurprising winner of the weekend with 134 million. Oddly, that number is far below expectations for a supremely expensive film, which is in the realm of 250 million. That doesn't mean all is said and done for the film's commercial chances. The rest of the box office only managed 18 million. It's still realistic for The Way of Water to end up as the highest grossing film of the year not named Top Gun: Maverick.
It also helps that Way of Water is playing on more expensive IMAX and 3D screens. The film is well-regarded by critics (78 on Rotten Tomatoes) and has an A Cinemascore. If anything can have legs, it's probably this.

British producer Richard Johns has launched a new label, Argo Films.
Johns is best known for the 2000 Academy Award-nominated indie horror flick Shadow of a Vampire and several other films, is debuting with a slate of projects and The Shepherd, a completed short for Disney+.
The Shepherd, starring John Travolta and Ben Radcliffe, is based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth and followed the story of a pilot flying home solo for Christmas in 1957. Iain Softley wrote and directed, and Alfonso Cuarón and Bill Kenwright are co-producers.
Argo will also house scripted assets and development projects from Corona Pictures and Corona Television, the businesses Johns established with Rupert Jermyn in 2009 that produced teen horror Truth or Dare and Tim Roth-starrer The Liability and whose TV arm received investment from Fremantle. Johns purchased Jermyn’s share of the assets when the latter left the industry in 2019.

‘Love Island’ Heads To Israel
Israel has become the latest destination to embrace Love Island, with ITV Studios-backed Armoza Formats set to produce a local version for new Keshet streamer Free TV. Filming will take place in May for a summer air date, as Israel becomes the 26th territory to commission a version following the announcement of Malta and Albania last week. Avi Armoza’s ITV Studios-backed The Four creator Armoza Formats is producing the local version. The company, which was acquired by ITV Studios in 2019, pivoted earlier this year to become ITV Studios’ production arm in Israel and has already produced two local versions of Come Dine with Me for Kan 11 along with the likes of The 1 Club and The Chase. The show will air on Free TV, Keshet and Rge’s streamer that is set to launch early next year. “Since establishing Armoza Productions and producing hits...
Team Experience will be discussing each Oscar category as we head into the precurosrs. Here's Nick Taylor and Ben Miller with the first volley...
the 4 most recent movies to be nominated for editing that Weren't nominated for Best Picture.
Ben: Alright Nick, since I'm starting this conversation, I'll get on a soapbox. I hate what this category has turned into. It used to be a really cool category that highlighted the most underrated aspect of the filmmaking process. Instead, it's turned into Best Picture Redux. In the last ten years, there have been 50 nominees for Best Editing. Only four were not nominated for Best Picture. When did this category get so lazy? Why, of all categories, is this one so linked to Best Picture... ...

There are plenty of things to like about Maria Schrader’s She Said, but one of the most impressive things is the relationships of the main characters. So many heavy, important things happen in the film, the marriages of Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) gets lost in the shuffle. It’s so rare, it’s almost revolutionary. It shouldn’t be ignored
Over a number of months, Kantor and Twohey investigate Harvey Weinstein’s numerous instances of sexual harassment of his female employees. This consists of business trips, long hours, and calls in the middle of the night or weekends. The film goes out of its way to show both women continuing to be mothers to their children and wives to their husbands. Here’s the refreshing part: it’s no big deal...

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ruled the weekend box office with a 181 million opening. Believe it or not, that's second-best on the year to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel knows how to make money. The second Black Panther entry arrived to good reviews (84 on Rotten Tomatoes) and zero counterprogramming. It also added another 150 million internationally. The film is expected to be the number two grossing film of the year in a few weeks (behind Top Gun: Maverick).

To say studios are anxious to make room for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is an understatement. With only one new wide release, the weekend box office looked much like it did the week before. The total box office came in under 60 million, but that is all in anticipation of an expected 150-200 million opening next weekend.

With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever inching closer to release, studios aren't about to release anything big that the Marvel behemoth could engulf. With only two new releases for the Halloween weekend and two additional wide expansions, Black Adam and Ticket to Paradise both repeated their top spots from last week's chart.
