Writers’ assistant Olga Lexell used to rack up around $10,000 a year in medical bills to manage a chronic condition, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, that requires her to sit through thyroid X-rays and frequent blood tests. While her show was on hiatus, she would pay $500 a month to extend the insurance that the studio offered, even though it was “never that good.” It wasn’t until writers’ assistants and script coordinators banded together in early 2018 to unionize under the banner of Iatse Local 871 that her healthcare costs shrunk dramatically.
“Once we unionized, my medical expenses went down from about $10,000 a year to $300 a year,” said Lexell. “I went to see my doctor, where my co-pay used to be $65 under the studio plan, and it was only $5. And I cried. I was so floored.”

It’s election season again at the Writers Guild, and continuing in their secretive ways, WGA West officials are refusing to answer any questions beyond what they put in their press releases. Seventeen candidates – including five incumbents – have been nominated by the guild’s nominating committee to vie for the eight open seats on the 16-member board. Asked if there are any incumbents who are not seeking re-election, guild spokesman Gregg Mitchell said, “We’re not commenting beyond today’s release.” A review of those elected in 2012, cross-checked against the incumbents seeking re-election this time, shows that John Aboud, David Goodman, […]...

STRIKE ZONE: LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES
After steamrolling through the Golden Globes and threatening the Oscars, the WGA strike may also deflate the third marquee award show: the Grammys.
The 50th annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to air Feb. 10 on CBS live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
WGA spokesman Gregg Mitchell said Monday that Grammy organizers haven't asked for a script waiver for the awards' planned telecast, but he added that such a request likely would be denied.
"The WGA has not yet taken a position on picketing the Grammys ceremony," Mitchell said.
But he noted that Grammys producer John Cossette Prods. is on the WGA's list of "struck companies."
Should the WGA decide to picket the awards show -- which conveniently takes place in Los Angeles where most writers are based -- celebrity attendance would certainly be affected. It was the refusal of SAG members to cross the picket line at the Globes that ultimately derailed the show.

Oscar and the Golden Globes will have to go without WGA writers on their telecasts, barring any last-minute reprieves.
That's the bottom line from a dramatic rebuff of both awards shows made public Monday night, though Oscar has gotten only a portion of the bad news so far.
The WGA said Monday night that it has nixed a writing-waiver request from producers of the Golden Globes telecast and also a request for some clips clearances for the Oscars. But a WGA insider said a decision also has been made -- though not announced -- to reject a request for a writing waiver for the Oscars as well.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and Dick Clark Prods., co-producers of the Jan. 13 Globes telecast on <NBC, had asked that WGA scribes be cleared to work on the program. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had sought permission to use certain film clips for its February presentation of the Oscars on ABC and also would require a waiver to use WGA writers on its telecast.
WGA spokesman Gregg Mitchell declined comment on when the matter of an Oscars writing waiver might be addressed. But a guild source insisted that the decision already had been made and that it too had gone against AMPAS.

HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
The WGA Awards are set for Feb. 9, with simultaneous ceremonies planned at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York.
