"The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.
The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. His gain was another writer's loss; Zak Penn had already written a script for "The Avengers," but Whedon threw his version out and started from scratch. "There was a script. There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," Whedon said. This move is an early harbinger of how Whedon would make his style into Marvel's own.
As "MCU" notes, this wasn't the first time this had happened to Penn.

"Star Trek" was the undisputed king of sci-fi television in the 1990s, but it lost that crown in the 2000s; prequel series "Star Trek: Enterprise" ended the franchise's reign with an abbreviated four season run (2001 to 2005). Different shows won the hearts of online fandom, including two contemporaries of "Enterprise" — "Futurama" and "Firefly."
The legacy of "Firefly" far outlasted its 14 episode run; fan demand led to the creation of the finale movie "Serenity" in 2005. Meanwhile, "Futurama" enjoyed a respectable 72 episode run from 1999 to 2003, but enduring popularity has revived it twice, first from 2007 to 2013, and again for a new season which premiered this summer. Short length doesn't mean a show will be forgotten, especially when the Internet can sustain a fandom like never before.
As detailed in "Star Trek" oral history book "The Fifty Year Mission" by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, these three shows intertwined in an episode of miscommunication and Hollywood office politics.

The anti-Joss Whedon jury is growing. Now, Jose Molina, a writer on the critically hailed Firefly series, has shared his experiences that echo the prior accusations of abuse against series creator-producer Whedon.
“Casually cruel” is a perfect way of describing Joss,” Molina said on Twtter, quoting prior remarks from actress Charisma Carpenter. “He thought being mean was funny. Making female writers cry during a notes session was especially hysterical. He actually liked to boast about the time he made one writer cry twice in one meeting.” Molina ended his tweet with the hashtag #IStandWithCharismaCarpenter
The comment adds to those made by others associated with Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. Actress Amber Benson, who played Tara Maclay on the show, earlier added her voice to the complaints.

Writers who have worked with Joss Whedon have begun speaking out about their experience with the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator in light of Charisma Carpenter’s allegations earlier this week.

Molina, who went on to work on shows including “Agent Carter” and “Sleepy Hollow,” is credited with two episodes of the short-lived, cult-favorite Whedon series.
Marti Noxon, who served as showrunner on “Buffy” for its final two seasons, voiced support for Carpenter and the other actresses who have spoken out against Whedon.

Nearly three months into the WGA’s standoff with Hollywood’s talent agents, WGA West president David A. Goodman says he’s “surprised” that more midsize and smaller agencies haven’t broken ranks with the Association of Talent Agents and signed the WGA’s new Code of Conduct. From the beginning, the guild has said that it intended to “divide and conquer” the agencies, but so far it has seen only limited success.
“I’ve been surprised by things both positively and negatively,” he said Tuesday on a podcast hosted by writers Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Jose Molina. “The negative surprise … I’m surprised that the non-Big Four agencies – Gersh, Paradigm, Apa, Kaplan Stahler, Rothman Brecher – that those agencies have not signed on. After the barnstorming success of Avengers: Endgame, directors Joe and Anthony Russo would be forgiven for wanting some much-needed time off.
Because let’s face it, alongside writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, they helped deliver what is arguably the pitch-perfect conclusion to McU Phase 3 (plot holes and all), all the while teeing up the next generation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. And all of this after the equally massive Avengers: Infinity War just 12 months ago.
Nevertheless, it seems the Russo Brothers have located their first big post-Endgame project: Magic: the Gathering. The world-famous collectible card game is headed to Netflix, it seems, after the streaming giant today announced a new animated series based on Magic and its beloved lore, with the Russos expected to “oversee the creation of an all-new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers.”

The Russos will oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.
“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” the Russos said.

The Public House in Los Feliz was packed tonight with writers who showed up for #Wgamix. The mixer was the brain child of writer producer Danny Zucker who announced it only four days ago, in the immediate aftermath of the WGA severing ties with the Ata after their negotiations collapsed and ordering its members to fire their agents.
“Every job I ever got was thanks to networking,” Zucker wrote in the original announcement. “Now it’s up to us to meet & help our new friends. That’s why I’m starting #Wgamix.”
Trying to navigate staffing season without agents, writers have banded together to create support networks with such social media initiatives as #WGAStaffingBoost and #WGASolidarityChallenge. #Wgamix is adding a traditional, face-to-face networking element to the mix.
The turnout for the inaugural gathering was so big, some attendees spilled into the bar next door, according to posts on Twitter. Here are some comments,...

There’s hardly a better example of just how overwhelming the TV offerings have gotten than “Weird City.” The new slick and bizarre comedy was co-created by Jordan Peele and “Key and Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, features a stacked cast, and is nonetheless stranded on YouTube Premium (though the first two episodes are available to stream for free). It’s the kind of show that could only exist during Peak TV, when the vast array of options can make room for bigger creative swings; it’s also the kind of show that could, regardless of merit, get lost in the shuffle.
But if you do tune into the six episodes that dropped on Feb. 13, “Weird City” quickly proves itself to be an interesting experiment, at the very least. It takes place in a sci-fi world wherein the “Haves” and “Have Nots” are divided into starkly segregated communities by a literal...

Agent Carter exec producer Jose Molina has given a fascinating interview with Den Of Geek in which he’s opened up about plans for the third season of the Marvel spy show, which we were cruelly denied when ABC cancelled the series after just two seasons due to low ratings.
Just to rub salt into the wound, season 2’s finale ended on a major cliffhanger that was fated never to be resolved. After finally getting some redemption and becoming a proper ally to Peggy, Chad Michael Murray’s Jack Thompson, a high-ranking Ssr agent, was apparently assassinated by a mysterious assailant who also stole a file on Hayley Atwell’s super-spy.
DoG asked Molina to clarify what would’ve happened next and he explained that the assassination attempt on Jack (which suggests he was going to survive it) would have led the gang to London, where it would’ve been revealed – shock horror!

It’s been two years since Agent Carter was last on our screens but fans still talk about wanting to see it return for that cruelly-denied third season. Unfortunately, despite this kind of rabid support, the period spy drama set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just didn’t earn impressive enough ratings for ABC to bring it back for a second time.
But is there a chance of a revival on some other network or platform? Well, it might be a long shot sadly, as one of the show’s executive producers has admitted that Agent Carter would be a tough sell. Ep Jose Molina spoke to Den Of Geek and said that, though the creative team would jump at the chance of a return, the series’ history with poor ratings wouldn’t offer much of an incentive to any networks looking to pick it up.
So how about Netflix then,...

Jordan Peele continues his takeover of Hollywood with a new sci-fi anthology TV project called Weird City. The series was recently picked up by YouTube and it sounds like it could be a great show.
Weird City was co-created and written by Peele and Key & Peele's Charlie Sanders. The show is set in "the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird. Each episode will explore issues that pertain to present-day life in Weird — stories that can only be told through the prism of sci-fi and comedy."
Peele had this to say in a statement:
"Writer/creator Charlie Sanders and I collaborated on some Key & Peele sketches that took on everything from the ‘Black Republicans’ to 'Continental Breakfasts’ to ‘Family Matters.' Now, with YouTube we present a series of comedy driven twisted-ass science fiction stories that take place in a world close to ours but just a little bit off."

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”

Agent Carter, Season 1, Episode 5, “The Iron Ceiling”
Written by Jose Molina
Directed by Peter Leto
Airs at 9pm (Et) on Tuesdays on ABC
“The Iron Ceiling” is the episode Agent Carter has been building to all season, and the kind of hour it needs most at this point in its run, now that the show’s world is mostly established. The episode more than makes up for the minimal forward momentum in the Howard Stark/Leviathan quadrants, with increasing character depth and backstories for multiple auxiliary players that until now have been given short shrift. A big problem that the show needs to work around is that everyone besides Howard, and maybe Jarvis, exists only to support Peggy or expand on her as a character. Some headway is made with this during the team’s trip to Russia to intercept the transfer of blueprints between Leviathon and a mystery seller...
