The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Bradywas less a roast than a torching. Somehow, Brady kept his blinding smile through all three hours of it.
The Groat, which streamed live as part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest from Inglewood, California, on Sunday night, was hosted by comedian Kevin Hart. He did not mince words, introducing the ceremony by asking if 49ers legend Joe Montana was in fact the Goat Qb being celebrated. Nope. It was indeed Brady, who earned seven Super Bowl wins over 23 seasons, mostly with the New England Patriots. And the Kia Forum suddenly looked a bit different to Hart, a noted Eagles fan: “Tom brought Boston with him,” he said. “I’ve never seen Inglewood so white.”
The proceedings moved on to roastmaster general Jeff Ross. He was no less brazen in his approach, arriving “straight from hell,” per Hart, on a carnival-like float dressed...

Tom Brady was a good, um, sport Sunday night, where he was roasted about all aspects of his life, from his former marriage to Gisele Bündchen to his role in deflategate.
Host Kevin Hart kicked off The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady by noting that the event would be focusing on the “greatest quarterback of all time.” “Wait, Joe Montana’s here?” he quipped. He went on to joke that the teleprompter should have included the qualifier “one of the” greatest quarterbacks ever in reference to Brady. “The greatest is Joe Montana,” he affirmed.
Hart also commented on the demographic makeup of the attendees inside the Kia Forum. “I’ve never seen Inglewood so white,” he quipped of the Los Angeles suburb where the venue is located. “It’s so fucking white in here. It looks like a Bruce Springsteen concert just let out. This used to be the home of the Lakers,...

It was a long night for Tom Brady at his live Netflix comedy roast, as it was for the rest of us watching from home.
Starting with a bloody Oj Simpson jersey and ending with Brady smashing an iPhone on stage, the Netflix live event, “The Greatest Roast of All-Time: Tom Brady,” honored the seven-time Super Bowl champion. The modern-day legend faced his biggest challenge yet: being roasted by comedians and his former NFL teammates.
At times hilarious and at others a bit cringe-worthy, the unedited live event was a lengthy affair that made one truly appreciate the editors of the Comedy Central roasts. Their task was to condense the content into a concise, entertaining 60-minute presentation. Here, bits went on far too long, and former football players had glazed looks in their eyes in the background. The comedians who do this for a living performed incredibly well, while the others…...

The Bay Area was a weird place in 1987. You had the remnants of the Me Decade’s cults of touchy-feeliness bumping up against Silicon Valley’s computer-nerd capitalism. Competing D.I.Y. music scenes meant you could surf between S.F. Thrash, East Bay rap, and pockets of punk popping up from everywhere; shows and entrances to a subculture of your choice were just a Bart ride away. Other than the San Francisco 49ers, still deep into their Joe Montana-led winning streak, sports meant rooting for underdogs. (The Oakland...

Hollywood loves feel-good, based-on-real-life sports dramas, and isn't shy about drastically altering the facts to mine these tales for maximum stand-up-and-cheer potential. The scrappy high-school basketball underdogs in "Hoosiers" were, despite the school's small enrollment, actually a top team in the state during that supposed Cinderella season (which is why the filmmakers opted to set the film in a fictional town). "Remember the Titans" is riddled with inaccuracies, one of the most egregious being that T.C. Williams High School's climactic game against George C. Marshall High occurred in the middle of the season. And while the title character of "Rudy" did fulfill his dream of suiting up for his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish, retired NFL quarterback Joe Montana, who was on the team at the time, says the dramatic uniform-dumping scene is a pure fabrication.

When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.

Talk about a well-stocked bar!
Super Bowl advertising has long centered on beer, but the 2023 game will feature more kinds of alcohol during the commercial breaks than it has in years. Viewers can expect to be served mixed drinks.
Rémy Cointreau is stepping up its investment around the spectacle, readying a 60-second spot for its Rémy Martin cognac slated to air in the first quarter of the game, when viewer attention is often intense. While details around the ad are being kept under wraps for now, the high-quality brandy’s appearance during national Super Bowl time marks “a major investment, and also reflects our confidence in the U.S, market for Remy Martin,” says Nicolas Beckers, CEO of Rémy Cointreau Americas, in an interview.

Al Pacino created an urban legend with Tony Montana, and Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983) is an icon of the gangster film genre; one of an unholy trinity alongside The Godfather (1972) and Goodfellas (1990). But when it premiered in New York, Steven Bauer, who played Manny Ribera in the film, remembers Martin Scorsese turning around halfway through the movie to warn: “You guys are great, but be prepared, because they’re going to hate it in Hollywood. Because it’s about them.”
The same could be said about the original Scarface. Studio filmmakers saw producer Howard Hughes as a rich interloper, bullying his way onto the lot with too many guns blazing. Conversely, Brian De Palma’s Scarface is about excess, and how success depends on it. Oliver Stone’s screenplay for the ‘80s movie used a gangster as an allegory for the Reagan administration’s war on drugs and the capitalistic greed of the era.

Vin Scully, the gentlemanly, yarn-spinning play-by-play man whose mellifluous voice provided the soundtrack to Dodger baseball from Brooklyn to Los Angeles for a jaw-dropping 67 seasons, has died. He was 94.
Scully, a member of the Dodgers organization from 1950 until his retirement following the 2016 regular season, died Tuesday at his home in Hidden Hills, the Dodgers announced.
When he bid farewell to the broadcast booth, he had called nearly half of the games for a franchise that was born in 1890.
Always even-tempered and an easy listen, Scully was credited with turning Los Angeles into a “transistor town” — his broadcasts were pumped throughout the L.A. Coliseum (the team’s first home out west) and then Dodger Stadium and wafted from traffic jams and street-side venues throughout the sprawling city.

Super Bowl Lv drew 96.4 million total multiplatform viewers on Sunday, when 2021’s big game aired on CBS. That all-in tally was the lowest since 2007. It includes a ton of platforms: the CBS Television Network (which brought in 91.629 million of those viewers), CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, Buccaneers and Chiefs mobile properties, Verizon Media mobile properties and ESPN Deportes television and digital properties.
Despite the marquee quarterback matchup, Super Bowl Lv was a pretty boring game. It was mostly noncompetitive, and the Kansas City Chiefs played sloppily. Tom Brady, who was named the game’s Mvp, threw for just 201 yards in the winning effort. He had three touchdown passes (two to former New England Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski) to zero interceptions. That was more than enough for the comfortable 31-9 victory.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won Super Bowl Lv with a decisive 31-9 victory over the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. The outcome was pretty much never in question.
The Bucs “W” marks the seventh — yes, seventh — Super Bowl championship for quarterback Tom Brady. Brady won his previous six rings with the New England Patriots. The next-closest players are Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, both with four Super Bowl titles.
So, not that close.
Brady, who was named Super Bowl Lv Mvp, had a good game, though he didn’t rack up a ton of passing yards. Didn’t have to.
Two of Brady’s three touchdown passes went to former Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski, who came out of retirement for exactly this. Brady’s counterpart, Kansas City Chiefs Qb Patrick Mahomes, played poorly.
To be fair to Mahomes, he was under intense Buccaneers pressure all night. The Kansas City special teams,...

Fans who tune in to the Super Bowl this Sunday are already expecting to see two all-star quarterbacks. Some of them will glimpse three.
Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady will command this Sunday’s broadcast, leading on-field strategy when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clash during CBS’ broadcast of Super Bowl Lv. In three parts of the country, however, during a commercial break, viewers will see another veteran of the gridiron classic: Joe Montana.
The former San Francisco 49er will hold forth for Diageo Plc’s famous Guinness beer in a 60-second ad, telling a small section of the game’s overall viewers that being great “is about how you come back — from a bad play, or the hardest year ever.” It’s the sort of inspiring concept that seems perfect for a national Super Bowl ad, except for the fact that Diageo’s rival, Anheuser-Busch InBev,...

The deflected pass that Pittsburgh Steeler running back Franco Harris miraculously caught for a touchdown and the first playoff victory in his team’s existence has been voted the greatest play in National Football League history.
A nationwide panel of 68 media members gave that 1972 play by Harris 3,270 points and 39 first-place votes. Second was Dwight Clark’s Td catch from Joe Montana that lifted San Francisco past Dallas to win the 1981 Nfc championship, although that play got only four first-place votes.
The runner-up in first-place votes among media members was David Tyree’s “Helmet Catch” for the Giants in their upset of the New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl.
The poll is part of the NFL’s ongoing celebration of its 100th anniversary.
